In Fanfiction, it is very important that we stay honest to the original books. That's what the fans are looking for, books that expand and develop the characters that we know and love.

So you need to make the characters recognisable.

Take Ron Weasley as an example. Almost everyone will have a read a fanfic where Ron is portrayed as a bumbling idiot, who just eats all the time.

JK Rowling has created Ron (just like all her other characters) as incredibly complex characters. Ron does eat a lot, but that's because he was bought up by Molly Weasley, who was always encouraging her children to eat more, yes Ron sometimes comes across as a bit of a idiot, but that's just because he isn't as quick on the uptake as Hermione is.

Ron has a inferiority complex, he always feels overshadowed by his brothers. And this reflects into his friendship with Harry.

Say what you will about Ron, but he is loyal, he stood by Harry, and even when he didn’t, he always came back to Harry.

Include Ron's insecurities in your works, include Harry's anger, or Annabeth's pride!

Stay true to what the wonderful authors have created for us, so that every character is appreciated as they should be!
