xii. in your blood

"So you might be wondering what a team does after they win the championship. The answer? Victory nachos!" Aisha cheered to her instagram story.

After Cobra Kai's when at the All Valley, Hawk insisted the group all head to Applebees to celebrate. Even after Miguel and Lilith backed out, telling the boy they already had plans, Hawk still pushed the dinner with everyone else.

Now, he, Moon, Demetri, Jake, and Aisha all sat in a smash booth in the corner of the restaurant, Hawk and Moon across from Aisha, Jake, and Demetri.

"It was supposed to be a round of drinks, but the waitress was not feeling Hawk's fake ID." Aisha said with a small frown to the camera.

Hawk's eyes jumped from Jake, who he was about to throw the wrapper of his straw at, to Aisha. "Hey, don't talk about that. My parents follow you." He scolded the girl. Aisha looked down at Hawk and winced before she turned back to her phone.

"Sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Moskowitz. Anyways, until next time, no mercy, bitches." She said, finally ending the video and sitting back down next to Jake and Demetri.

Demetri reached over and grabbed a nacho, a satisfied smile on his face. "I gotta say, it's nice to be at a victory party." He said and just as he was about to eat the nacho, Hawk leaned across the table to try and take it.

Jake saw it coming and with one hand, blocked Hawk from getting the nacho while using his other hand to whack Hawk.

Hawk huffed, grabbing his own nacho from the plate. "Yeah, except you had nothing to do with the victory." He said, smirking when he saw the smile on Demetri's face for Jake defending him.

Jake reached for another nacho this time, and he dipped his head back to fully drop the nacho in his mouth, but Hawk reached over, taking it and eating it. "Dude." Jake muttered, but Hawk just smirked at him, thinking it was funny.

"Well, then I consider it a belated party for the coding competition we won at computer camp. Remember?" Demetri said before a big smile grew on his face and Hawk's cheeks started to pinken. "Demetri and Eli! Binary Brothers!" Demetri sang, doing a small robot dance with the song.

Jake, Moon, and Aisha all laughed at the song, Jake throwing his head back and covering his mouth to hide his giggles and as his laughter started to die down, his head rested tiredly on Demetri's shoulder.

Hawk's jaw clenched at the three laughing at him and he leaned forward. "Hey, cool it with the nerd shit, huh?" he grumbled loud enough that really only Demetri and Jake could hear him.

Jake squinted at Hawk. His eyes moved to Demetri for a second and when he saw how his face fell, Jake turned back to Hawk waving him off. "Dude, relax. No one's judging you guys." Jake said and Hawk blinked, biting the inside of his cheek before he leaned back into the booth, closer to Moon.

As the girls laughter started to die down, Moon turned to Jake, her eyebrows furrowed as she looked around the restaurant. "Hey, where's Lil and Miguel anyway?"

...

While Jake, Hawk, Demetri, Aisha, and Moon sat in a small booth at Applebees, Lilith, Miguel, and their families all sat at Lilith's dinner table to get to know each other and celebrate Miguel's win.

Lilith's mom, Addison, sat at the head of the table while Lilith's dad, Harry, gave Miguel a warm smile from the other end. Lilith sat beside Miguel on one side of the table, fingers tightened around his under the table while his mom and grandma sat across from them.

Most of the dinner consisted of the families getting to know each other. Addison and Harry wanting to know about Carmen and Rosa and vice versa.

Even though no one was even talking to him, Miguel adjusted his shirt collar for the third time since sitting down out of nerves. As her conversation with Carmen started to die off, Addison noticed the boys nervousness and straightened up.

"So," Addison began, making Lilith and Miguel's heads snap to her. "Miguel, congratulations on your victory in the All Valley. You look like you've been doing it your whole life."

Miguel blinked, caught off guard by the compliment. "Uh, well... I actually just started training in the fall." He stuttered out and when Addison's eyebrows raised, Miguel felt a knot grow in his stomach.

"Really? Well, what made you start doing karate?" Addison asked.

Miguel glanced at Lilith for reassurance, her lips pressed into a small smile as she nodded her head, silently telling him to be honest. "I was getting bullied at the start of the year. I figured I should learn some ways to defend myself."

Addison tilted her head slightly, her expression unreadable. "Interesting. So you think violence is the best answer when it comes to that?"

Lilith's face paled. "Mom." She warned softly, but Addison held up a hand.

Harry jumped in before Addison could get another word out, sensing the need to ease the mood. "I think it's very brave of you, kid." Harry said, making Miguel turn to the opposite end of the table. Harry gave the boy a small smile, hoping to calm him from his wife's interrogating.

"Addison's sister actually runs a karate dojo back in Korea. Right, Addy?" Harry asked, bringing his glass to his lips and taking a sip. Addison looked to her husband and smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes, almost as if she were silently scolding him for what he said.

Nonetheless, she turned back to Miguel and Lilith, nodding her head. "She took over our grandpa's dojo, yes." She said and Lilith's eyes widened.

"Wait, Aunt Dee has a dojo?" Lilith asked, leaning forward with her elbows on the table.

Addison glared daggers into Lilith's arms instead of answering the question. Lilith felt as if her arms were on fire and she quickly took them off of the table, muttering a small apology. Addison nodded her head at her daughter correcting her mistake, but Miguel took the woman's nod as her answering the question.

He turned to Lilith with a small smile and squeezed her hand tighter when she saw the way she shimmied down in her seat a little out of embarrassment. "Looks like karate is in your blood." Miguel said, a taunting smile dancing on his face.

Lilith scoffed out a laugh, shaking her head. When she moved to sit properly again, Miguel's smile doubled in size over the fact that he got her to feel a little bit better.

Lilith's cheeks were still flushed as she reached for her water. "Mom, Dad, how's the food?" She asked, part of her terrified for the answer since her and Miguel made the food, but when her dad smiled, Lilith eased.

"It's delicious." Harry said, taking a huge bite of the mashed potatoes on his plate before pointing down at it with his fork once it was in his mouth. "Lili-bear, you did a great job with the potatoes."

Lilith bit her tongue at her father's nickname for her and her eyes closed when she heard Miguel stifle a laugh beside her.

"Actually, Miguel made that." Lilith admitted, nudging his arm a little more aggressively than she should've since he was laughing at her nickname. "He makes better mashed potatoes than I do."

Miguel turned away from Lilith and to Harry, smiling sheepishly. "It's my Yaya's recipe. She taught me everything I know." Miguel said, pointing to Rosa across the table from him with his glass before he took a sip of his water.

He could feel Addison's gaze lingered on him and he had to control his hand from shaking. Jake was right, this woman was intense.

"A boy who cooks..." Addison said, her tone softening just a smidge. "That's rare. This one can hardly work the microwave." She joked, pointing at Harry from across the table.

Lilith nearly choked on her drink. Not just over the fact that her mom actually seemed to be enjoying the dinner, but she was liking Miguel too. She exchanged a shocked glance with Miguel, who gave her a small, relieved smile.

As dessert was served, the conversation became less tense, with Harry cracking jokes and Rosa sharing embarrassing childhood stories about Miguel that Lilith was practically shaking to hear. Even Addison offered a few comments that were, while still monotone, surprisingly pleasant.

By the time the evening ended, Miguel felt like he could finally breathe again. As Lilith walked him, Carmen and Rosa to the door, Miguel squeezed Lilith's hand. "That went... better than I expected." He whispered and Lilith looked at him with wide eyes. She looked over her shoulder to make sure her parents weren't looking at her before she nodded her head crazily.

"Better than I expected," Lilith whispered back, relief flooding her voice.

Miguel smiled down at her, moving a piece of hair behind Lilith's ear. "I'll see you at karate?" He asked and Lilith smiled.

She took a small step toward him and went on her tippy toes to give him a quick kiss. When she pulled away, Miguel's lips slightly chased after hers and when he opened his eyes, Lilith was already smiling back at him. "I'll see you at karate."

"Okay." Miguel whispered, his cheeks pinking up as he walked backward out of Lilith's house to follow his mom and grandma back to their car. Lilith waited, leaning against the doorway until the three reached their car.

Just before Miguel could climb in, he looked back to Lilith and waved.

Lilith giggled, her head dropping as her smile grew. She looked back up at Miguel, waving back at him before closing the door as Miguel got into his car.

Lilith walked to her room with a big smile on her face and from the kitchen, Addison watched her daughter, her face unreadable until the corners of her mouth quirked up into the tiniest of smiles.

...

Just like always, Lilith drove Jake and Hawk to karate only this time, Lilith picked up Miguel too.

Hawk normally got the passenger seat since he lived on the same street as Lilith, but just before he was about to climb into the passenger seat today, Lilith told him to move to the back and that Miguel would be sitting there today.

When she drove to Jake's, the boy let out a victorious laugh as he walked to the car, thinking the seat was open for him to finally sit in.

And then Lilith told him to sit in the back.

When they got to Miguel's, the boy walked towards the car with a big smile on his face, not seeing anything wrong with the arrangement until he got into the car and saw the glares Hawk and Jake were giving him.

Hawk complained the whole drive to the dojo, claiming that it was unfair Miguel got shotgun privileges because he's dating the driver and when they pulled into the parking lot of Cobra Kai, the boys complaints continued.

"You know, it's fine with you want to be unfair about seating, Lilith. I get my license next week anyway." Hawk called out after the girl, who was walking faster to get away from Hawk. "And my mom is going to give me her Sentra." Hawk added and from beside him, Jake's eyes widened and he turned to face Hawk.

"Oh... really?" Jake asked, his eyes wide in excitement.

Hawk turned to Jake with a smirk, glad someone was listening to him. He punched the boy in the chest and walked closer to him. "Yeah, I'm thinking about putting a blue racing stripe down the middle, hood to tail." He muttered and Jake imagined what the car would look like for a few seconds, before he turned back to Hawk, nodding with a big smile.

"I like it." He said, making Hawk's smirk turn into a genuine smile. He let out a small laugh, wrapping his arm around Jake's shoulders as they walked. Hawk turned to look at the doors of their dojo and tapped Jake on the shoulder.

"Looks like we got some new students." He said and Jake turned to see what Hawk was talking about. When Jake's eyes landed on a handful of new students, he let out a small snicker, looking to Hawk with a big smirk. "Fresh fish." He muttered back.

Two of the new boys looked to see who was walking toward them and they immediately straightened up when they saw Miguel coming over. "It's the champs." One of them whispered, but Miguel, Lilith, Jake, and Hawk all heard him.

One of them quickly reached to open the door as the short one of them gave the four a nervous smile.

Lilith was about to walk in and say thank you to the boy that opened the door for them, but Hawk grabbed her elbow and pulled her back. Lilith was rammed into Miguel's chest as Hawk stepped forward, eyeing the two. "So you guys wanna be Cobra Kais, huh?" Hawk asked.

He raised his fist as if he was about to punch the boys and when they both flinched, Hawk chuckled, dropping his fist. "You got a long road ahead of you." He breathed out, walking into the dojo.

Lilith, Miguel, and Jake followed after him. Lilith sent the taller boy a smile as a thank you and once she was inside, she sped up to Hawk and punched him in the arm. "Why'd you do that?" Lilith scolded the boy.

Hawk winced, rubbing where Lilith just punched him and shrugged. "I didn't do anything!"He whispered back to her. Lilith rolled her eyes, looking away from the boy and her jaw fell at the sight of the dojo.

One of the mirrors was shattered and the plastic trash bin that usually sat in the corner of the room was halfway melted, a burn running up the wall next to it.

Lilith felt Miguel and Jake stand next to her as she stared at the dojo. "What the hell happened here?" She whispered under her breath and Miguel sighed from beside her. "Looks like Sensei threw a party." He muttered.

"Must've been pretty sick if fire got involved." Hawk chuckled from the other side of Lilith, pointing to the burn marks on the wall. He suddenly frowned, his hand dropping as he let out a small huff. "I wonder why he didn't invite us?"

Lilith slowly turned to face the boy, giving him a "really?" look before she rolled her eyes and started to walk towards Aisha. "I could think of a handful of reasons..." She muttered under her breath, but none of the boys heard her.

Just as Lilith got to Aisha, Johnny walked out of his office.

"Quiet!" He yelled, making Lilith jump and close her mouth just as she was about to ask Aisha how her weekend was.

The two girls turned to face their sensei, but Johnny ignored them, his eyes glued on all of the new kids in the dojo. "The dojo's closed to new students today." He said, nodding his head toward the exit.

The boy that opened the door for Lilith gave Johnny a small smile, pointing between him and his friend. "We just wanted to sign up after we saw the tournament." He said and Johnny just raised his eyebrows, annoyed that the boy didn't just listen to him right away. "Do I need to say it again? Get out."

Lilith slowly turned around and found the boys right behind her. She looked between both of them and through her teeth muttered. "Get out."

The two boys looked at Lilith nervously. They turned back to Johnny and nodded frantically. "Yes, sir." The shorter one of the two said, he and the others running out of the dojo.

"Let's go, move it! Come back tomorrow. And bring your checkbooks!" Johnny yelled as the boys ran out of the room. When the door shut behind the last teen, Johnny looked to his students. "Everyone, fall in!"

Lilith and Aisha quickly pushed their way through the front, standing in the first row with Jake on the other side of Aisha and Hawk on the other side of Lilith.

"Must've been a rager, Sensei." Hawk laughed out and Miguel chuckled from the other side of him. "Yeah, were you celebrating all weekend?" Miguel asked and Johnny scoffed, walking away from the two boys and towards the opposite end of the row.

"Celebrating what? My students are a bunch of pussies." He grumbled and as he passed Lilith, the girl turned to Aisha beside, giving her a small side eye at the man's words that Aisha immediately returned.

Johnny called Miguel and Hawk up to the front of the class and once they were facing the rest of the teens, Johnny started to circle them. "Hawk, did you attack your opponent when his back was turned?"

Lilith sighed, realizing what Johnny was doing, but Hawk didn't seem to notice and gave the man a confused look. "Yes, Sensei." He hesitated and Johnny nodded, turning his attention to Miguel.

"Diaz, did you purposely attack your opponent's injury?" Johnny asked and Lilith watched Miguel answer with a completely straight face. "Yes, Sensei." He said, not sounding guilty for actions at all.

Lilith frowned at her boyfriend's words as Johnny scoffed. "You think that makes you badass?" He asked and the two boys only looked down.

"What's the matter, too tough a question? Maybe you need some help." Johnny said. His eyes moved to the rest of the students and when he noticed the frown on Lilith's face, he remembered her snapping at him at the All Valley for his "new rules."

He left the two boys and walked towards Lilith. Queen of England. Two cobras in the jungle. One kills the strongest lion. The other kills a crippled monkey. Which cobra do you wanna be?" Johnny asked, walking until he was right in front of Lilith.

The girls eyes flickered to Miguel behind Johnny for a split second before he turned back to her sensei. "The one that kills the lion, Sensei." Lilith answered and Johnny nodded in agreement. "And why is that?" He asked.

"Because it killed a stronger animal." Lilith answered and Johnny walked away from Lilith, satisfied with the answer. "Correct!" He cheered, walking back to Miguel and Hawk. "Cobra Kai is about being badass. And the baddest badass is the one who beats his opponent when he's at his strongest. Not when his back is turned, not when he's injured. Is that understood?"

"Yes, Sensei." Hawk and Miguel muttered like two kids that got in trouble with their mom, neither of them looking the man in the eyes.

"That means no more cheating. No more fighting dirty. From here on out, those are pussy moves, and you don't wanna be pussies, do you?" Johnny asked, getting right in their faces. The two didn't flinch though, they kept their eyes forward and shook their heads.

"No, Sensei." The whole class answered this time.

Johnny nodded, proud that his students were listening to him. He stepped away from Miguel and Hawk, pointing to everyone. "Good. It's why I had you wear white belts, we're starting over." His eyes moved back to Miguel and Hawk one more time and he pointed to the floor. "Diaz, Hawk, 50 push-ups on your knuckles."

As Hawk and Miguel started their push-ups, Johnny turned to the rest of his students and he instantly pointed to Jake at the end of the first row. "Greene, warm them up."

"Yes, Sensei." Jake said, walking to the front of the class as Johnny walked back into his office.
