Aurora draws in a shaky breath, on the verge of a panic attack as she clings to the bathroom sink. She refuses to look in the mirror, not wanting to see the crazy reflection that will stare back at her. Instead, she focuses on her breathing and wipes her tears away with the sleeve of Laila's hoodie.
Hospitals didn't always have this effect on her. With the entirety of her favorite show taking place in one, she had been fascinated by them at one point; the girl had once even gone so far as to job shadow a surgeon for forty-eight hours, just so she could legally roam around and watch surgeries.
But her last trip to the hospital changed her opinion on them drastically. Aurora no longer finds herself interested in the same place that told her about her best friend's death. It's emotionally traumatized her to the point that she hasn't watched Grey's Anatomy since the fateful day, unable to stomach even the idea of death. Just the thought of hospitals makes her want to hide from the world and cry.
When rushing to the hospital behind the ambulance that held Carmen, Aurora was so focused on the younger girl's wellbeing that the idea of this crisis having any sort of backlash on her didn't cross her mind. Surrounded by others, she had managed to keep her mind off of the memories and trauma threatening to spill from the back of her mind. When she excused herself to find the nearest public restroom, it hardly surprised her when the tidal wave of emotions washed over her and caused her to crumple to the floor.
That was forty-five minutes ago.
Aurora sighs, knowing Jonah is more than likely panicking about her where-abouts. Drying her eyes once more, she straightens up and accidentally makes eye contact with her reflection, nearly causing herself to start crying again.
The bathroom door opens and she whirls around, stiffening when Jackson's mother is the woman walking through it. She doesn't carry the same wariness, instead smiling kindly when she catches sight of Aurora.
"Are you alright, dear? You have the others quite worried about you."
"Why wouldn't I be?" Aurora huffs, crossing her arms and brushing past her. "It's not like I lost someone so close to me that he might as well have been my brother the last time I was in a situation like this, nor is my best friend fighting for her life again because some asshole couldn't understand the concept of 'no means no' and if she doesn't make it, I'm not entirely sure I'll be able to live with myself. So yes, I'm perfectly alright."
Jessica frowns, struggling to find a way to reassure her, but Aurora storms out the door before she can say anything.
"Why are you here?" Zach demands harshly as Aurora wanders back to the waiting area, causing her to pick up her pace.
As she rounds the corner, Jonah all but leaps from his seat and moves to stand in front of her, worry written across his features. He asks if she's okay but Aurora doesn't hear, instead focusing on who Zach is arguing with; Jackson and his friend, Cole.
"Aurora," Jonah warns, knowing exactly what she's thinking merely by the expression on her face. It's the same look she has every time she tackles Jack. "You won't be able to see Carmen if we're kicked out for causing a ruckus."
"Do you honestly expect me to just let her kidnapper stay here?" Aurora snaps. "He's the reason we're in this fucking mess in-"
Chairs getting knocked over and a shocked cry cut her off as everyone's attention falls on the source of the noises. Zach had knocked Jackson to the ground and is punching the boy, who doesn't appear to be fighting back. Aurora pushes Jonah out of the way and tackles Cole - who, unlike his friend, has no issue fighting back.
"I don't even know you, stupid bitch!" He cries out, throwing his arms up to deflect her punches aimed at his face. "I didn't do anything to her!"
"You still let her get hurt!"
Aurora is able to land one solid punch on the boy's face before he catches her wrist and uses his free hand to hit her side. It momentarily stuns her and Cole takes the advantage and shoves her. Aurora loses her position on top of him, but he releases her wrist too late for her to catch herself and the back of her head slams into the corner of one of the chairs.
Aurora groans, instinctively touching the tender spot as Jonah hurries to stand in front of her. She furrows her eyebrows together when her hand touches something sticky, wondering if a drink had spilled when she hit the chair. Bringing her hand in front of her face, she fights her mounting hysteria as she realizes her own blood is covering it.
"Oh shit," Cole gasps, moving to step closer, only to be stopped as Jonah places a hand on his chest.
"Don't come near her," he threatens.
Cole holds his hands up in surrender, stepping back. "I didn't mean for it to go that far."
Jonah ignores his comment, instead focusing on Aurora, who stares back at him dazedly.
"I believe I have a caucasian," she says confidently, holding up her bloody fingers as proof.
"You mean a concussion?"
"That's what I said."
