06 | creatures of every color, venom, and sad story

DOROTHY COULD EASILY say that the magical case belonging to Newt Scamander was the most fascinating thing she had ever seen. Everything, all the creatures and different areas, were mesmerizing and intricate. And Newt himself...well, he wasn't that bad according to Dorothy.

Newt, who was currently stroking one of the 'Graphorns', said, "Hello, hello!"

He seemed oddly tranquil as the creature's slimy tentacle rest on his shoulder, seeming to embrace him, while herself and Jacob looked with an uncomfortable aura surrounding them. While she admired Newt for his care for his creatures, she found the sight of that weird and unsettling.

"So they're the last breeding pair in existence. If I hadn't managed to rescue them, that could have been the end of Graphorns - forever," Newt explained to the two.

Dorothy gave a pout, looking at the creatures, "I'm sorry. You two seem very nice."

A younger one of the creature trotted up to them, heading straight to Jacob and liking his hand. The creature, seeming interested by the new person, stared at the human before letting Jacob pet his head, which he did with a small smile. Newt watched the two, pleased, as Dorothy smiled at the creature and the Scamander couldn't help but let his eyes wander to her, an even wider smile forming as he did.

"All right," Newt spoke, throwing a piece of meat into the enclosure, which the creatures hastily went to.

"So what, you - you rescue these creatures?" Jacob asked, standing next to Newt as Dorothy watched the Graphorns with admiration.

"Yes, that's right. Rescue, nurture, and protect them, and I'm gently trying to educate my fellow wizards about them," Newt spoke with pride.

Dorothy smiled, walking over to them, "By what? Accidently letting some of them out onto the streets of New York and exposing the wizarding world to No-Majs? Great work, Newt."

"I didn't - it wasn't my plan," he stuttered out, sighing and looking at her, "Those weren't my intentions."

The strawberry blonde smiled, nodding as she stepped to the side, letting Newt gain control again of what was happening.

"Come on," he motioned for them to follow. They entered a more bamboo territory, ducking and diving through the trees as Newt called, "Titus? Finn? Poppy, Marlow, Tom?"

They emerged into a secluded spot of the territory, where Dorothy could vaguely see small creatures climbing a tree. Newt brought one of the creatures out of his pocket, perching it on his hand.

"He had a cold. He needed some body warmth," Newt told the others. Dorothy frowned, muttering a, "Poor thing," to which Newt smiled at.

They moved closer to the small tree that was bathing in sunlight. A clan of the creature that Newt was holding were having a conversation and rushing out of the leaves. Newt extended his arm to the tree, trying to gently push the small creature onto the tree, but it didn't work. The others spoke noisily (in their own gibberish) when they saw the young thing.

"Right, on you hop," Newt spoke, but the creature refused. Newt sighed, partially looking back at them, "See, he has some attachment issues."

Then, he turned back to the creature, "Now, come on, Pickett. Pickett. No, they're not going to bully you...now, come on, Pickett!"

Pickett continued to cling onto Newt, desperate not to return to the tree, and Dorothy's heart broke a little as she saw that. Finally, Newt sighed, accepting defeat.

"All right. But that is exactly why the accuse me of favoritism..." Newt muttered to Pickett, putting him on his shoulder. He turned around to, seeming to be looking for something before giving a look of concern.

"I wonder where Dougal's gone," he said in a devastated tone. Then, they heard a chirping from a nearby nest. "All right, I'm coming...I'm coming, Mum's here - Mum's here."

Dorothy brought her hand to her mouth, trying not to giggle at the thought of Newt referring to himself as 'Mum'. Her first thoughts of it was how ridiculous and hilarious it was, but then after some time, she realized how endearing and caring it was for the creatures and Newt.

Newt raced to the rest, scooping up a baby, "Ah - hello, you - let me take a look at you."

"I know these guys," Jacob voiced his thoughts, looking at the nest full of creatures.

"New Occamy," he then turned to Jacob, "Your Occamy."

"What do you mean? My Occamy?" Jacob asked, not understanding what Newt was saying or how he could keep up with all the different names of the creatures and then the fact that he name them.

"Yes - do you want to...?" Newt offered the baby Occamy to Jacob, who carefully took it, a little fear inside him of what the creature would do and why Newt would offer the creature to him if not to scare him again.

"Oh wow...yeah, sure. Okay...ah-ha," he gently held the creature, he moved to pet the creature's head, but the Occamy moved to nip him, causing Dorothy to move back at the sudden change of the creature's attitude.

"Ah no, sorry - don't pet them. They learn to defend themselves early. See, their shells are made of silver so they're incredibly valuable," Newt explained with excitement about his creatures.

"I'll be sure to keep that in mind," Dorothy spoke, looking at the other Occamy with apprehension.

"Okay..." Jacob awkwardly spoke, not knowing what else to say after the ordeal.

"Their nests tend to get ransacked by hunters," Newt added. He then took the creature in Jacob's hands back into the nest carefully, a smile on his face at the fact that both Jacob and Dorothy were interested in his creatures...especially Dorothy.

"Thank you," then, in a croaky voice, "Mr. Scamander?"

"Call me Newt," the British man offered, his eyes flickering to Dorothy, who always seemed to call him that anyways without asking for the proper introduction - the classier way. Though, she seemed to be a very un-classy person to Newt.

"Newt...I don't think I'm dreaming," Jacob spoke, looking around with amazement, taking in every detail even though, in the back of his head, he knew it wouldn't matter. It wouldn't matter how long he stared, seeing the intricate details because he wouldn't remember anything in the morning. Everything would be erased as he went on with his life, oblivious to the wizarding world and everyone a part of it, like how it was written to be.

Vaguely amused by the No-Maj, Newt asked, "What gave it away?" He had a small smirk on his face as he did.

"I ain't got the brains to make this up," he spoke, and Newt looked at Jacob with slight intrigue and flattered by the fact that he thought the territory was really that beautiful.

"Actually, would you mind throwing some of those pellets in with the Mooncalves over there?"

"Yeah, sure," Jacob took the bucket and began walking in the direction that Newt told him to go to.

Dorothy sighed then, looking at Newt with sadness. "He won't remember...what's the point in showing him this?"

"We experience magic every day, he doesn't. Why not add a little adventure in his life?"

"Because it won't matter!" Dorothy huffed in frustration, "It's not fair for Jacob! I mean, I would hate if I experienced something truly incredible and then woke up, unable to remember what happened."

Newt looked at Dorothy with admiration and sadness as well. Why would he do that to Jacob? The poor man wouldn't remember anything, it would be just like a dream to him even if he did manage to vaguely remember the concept of the events. But he knew why, a part of him did. He hoped that MACUSA would see Jacob and lift some of their stricter laws, like ensuring more wizards are created by stopping the production of half-bloods.

"I know," he spoke softly, watching as Jacob wandered into another territory. Getting up, the two followed him into their, but for different reasons.

"Step back," Newt spoke sharply, causing Dorothy to back up slightly. She hadn't heard Newt use a tone like that before. Then again, she hadn't even known him a whole day at that point.

"Jeez..." Jacob jumped, startled as he continued to stare the bubble with a cloud of black smoke in it.

Dorothy gasped when she saw it, already having a vague idea of what the thing could be, but hoping the opposite of her suspicions.

"Step back..." Newt spoke again to Jacob, who did, but only a step or two.

"What's the matter with this?" Jacob asked, not understanding because he never learned the danger of that thing that Newt kept.

"I said back away."

"What the hell is this thing?" Jacob asked, giving him a face of mass confusion as Newt sighed.

"It's an Obscurious."

Dorothy backed away from Newt, "No...that's...no."

Newt turned away from the two, he was more cold then, more sharp. Memories of the little girl were brought back to his mind, something he never wanted to experience again. Dorothy, too, could feel the happy atmosphere and feeling of the case drain away.

"I need to get going, find everyone who's escaped before they get hurt," Newt spoke, no small smile on his face.

They entered another forest, but Dorothy didn't bother looking around. She found nothing fun it seeing the beauty of the place after seeing the Obscurious.

"Before they could get hurt," Jacob repeated, hoping to show Newt how crazy he sounded.

"Yes, Mr. Kowalski. See, they're currently in alien terrain, surrounded by millions of the most vicious creatures on the planet," there was pause for dramatic effect, "Humans."

Newt stopped once more, in a more savannah-like territory. He looked around to see it empty. "So where would you say that a medium-sized creature that likes broad, open plains - trees - water holes - that kind of thing - where might she go?"

"In New York City?" Jacob restated in disbelief, and Dorothy agreed. The city definitely was not known for its pastures and long fields.

"Yes."

"Plains?" Jacob shrugged, trying to think of something, "Ah - Central Park?"

"And where exactly is that?"

"Where is Central Park?" Jacob spoke with disbelief, and Dorothy couldn't blame him. It was a fairly stupid question. "Well, look, I would come and show you, but don't you think it's kind of a double cross? The girls take us in - they make us hot cocoa..."

"You do realize that when they see you've stopped sweating, they'll Obliviate you in a heartbeat," Dorothy couldn't help but feel guilty at Newt's words.

"What does 'Bliviate' mean?"

"It'll be like you wake up and all memory of magic is gone," Newt hastily explained, not really going into detail all that much.

"I won't remember any of this?" Jacob asked, a hint of sadness in his words. Dorothy couldn't blame him, she didn't want to forget the creatures either. "Dorothy?"

She looked down when he addressed her, "I'm sorry...it's just - it's the rules. I don't want to, at all. I'm sorry, Jacob."

And her words decided his choice, and hers. The No-Maj sighed, "All right, yeah - okay - I'll help you."

Newt picked up the bucket that was now empty, glad to see that he had two people he could slightly trust with him, "Come on, then."
