3. Secrets
Over the next two months, Lia got closer to Jungkook. He would come over to her apartment every Thursday without fail. He would always enter with the same black garb he had on when they had first met, but would immediately let his face become exposed once she shut the door. Most of the time they talked about foolish, nonconsequential things or played video games. Neither of them broached any serious topics. Lia didn't mind though. It felt nice to feel as if she had someone in this new environment.
It was during one of these Thursdays that Lia was sitting on the back of the couch while Jungkook was standing behind her as he was convinced she was going to flip right onto her back. He had a controller in his hand that he was using to navigate his avatar through the game.
"Why are you sitting on the back of the couch?"
"Because I'm a giant!"
"In the game," chuckled Jungkook. He was standing so close to Lia's back that she could smell the cologne he was wearing, and the heat radiating off his body. "Just because you're a giant in the game doesn't mean you have to be that way in real life."
"Well, my 5'5" status already makes me feel like a shrimp around you and your 5'10" self. I have to feel bigger somehow."
"You and your logic make absolutely no sense. You're ridiculous," said Jungkook with another laugh. Lia swiveled briefly to see a bright grin cross his face. He had really come out of his shell in the last few weeks. It was nice that Lia got to see the happier side of Jungkook over the worried one.
Before Lia could make any sort of response, her cell phone rang. She quickly clicked 'pause' on the game, lurching forward to grab up her cell phone. Jungkook watched as she answered it, putting it to her ear.
"Hello?...yes, this is Lia...what? Really?! Oh...okay! Thank you! Yes...yes, I'll be there first thing in the morning!...Yes...Have a great day!"
"What was that?" asked Jungkook as he put his controller down on the back of the couch.
Lia had a huge smile on her face as she ran onto the couch, jumping off the back of it and giving Jungkook a big bear hug. Jungkook was taken aback in surprise, stumbling backwards a bit as Lia hugged him in a koala like hug; her arms about his neck and her legs about his waist. She was squealing as he wrapped his arms about her in return, chuckling.
"I got a job! An honest to goodness job!" Lia said between squeals.
"I'm happy for you, Lia," said Jungkook as Lia continued to hug him.
"We should celebrate!" said Lia. "Lets go out to dinner tomorrow! We can celebrate my first shift."
"I...I would, but I can't tomorrow," said Jungkook as he gently set Lia back on her feet. Lia stood in front of him, looking up at his face to see there was a trace of sadness there.
"Let me guess," said Lia. "You're busy."
That was always Jungkook's excuse whenever Lia tried to do something with him on any other day of the week. The only time she could see him was on Thursdays, and she didn't understand why.
"I am though," said Jungkook. "I really wish I weren't."
"Then don't be busy," said Lia. "Can't you reschedule whatever plans you have?"
The sadness in Jungkook's eyes took over more then until he was turning away from her to grab his items off the kitchen counter. He began to put his hat, mask, and sunglasses back on.
"Why are you leaving?"
"I should get going..."
Lia walked over to Jungkook, reaching out to grab his wrist to stop him from walking out the door.
"Stop. Talk to me. What's going on with you?"
"I...I..."
This wasn't the Jungkook she had gotten used to. Here was the one that she had met the first time all over again.
"You can trust me. Whatever it is."
In the back of her mind, Lia began to wonder if Jungkook had a woman in his life already. Lia thought they were just friends, but she began to really analyze their friendship. Sure she liked him as more than a friend, but she didn't think that she was throwing himself at him that bad. Maybe she had been though. Maybe this was Jungkook's attempt to keep her effectively in the friend zone.
"I want to tell you. I do, but it's complicated," said Jungkook. "It's complicated and you wouldn't believe me."
"Is it another woman?"
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me," said Lia. "Do you already have a girlfriend or something, and I'm making you uncomfortable?"
"I told you I had no one," said Jungkook. "That hasn't changed."
Lia couldn't explain the relief she felt when Jungkook said that, but she could still sense his sadness.
"Then tell me. Please. I won't tell anyone."
Even with Jungkook masked up again, she could tell that he was waffling. Before Lia even realized it, Jungkook was grabbing her gently by the hand. He yanked her after him towards the door of her apartment and into the hallway.
"Whoa. Hold on there!" said Lia with a chuckle as she briefly freed her hand from Jungkook's to lock her apartment. Once her apartment was locked, Jungkook took her hand again and walked across the landing to his apartment. She stood by his side as he used his free hand to unlock the door.
She had always been curious what his apartment looked like, but now she was just seconds away from seeing what it looked like and she was nervous. She had no idea what to expect. Jungkook pushed the door open, tugging her in after him before shutting the door. Lia stood lingering in the doorway, casting her eyes about the apartment.
It was rather neat for being a bachelor pad. Neat and empty. There weren't any pictures hanging on the walls. There was a beige couch in the living room in front of the television; a small stack of books near it. The entire apartment was shrouded in darkness from the black blackout curtains over the window. The only reason she could see now was because Jungkook had flicked the switch on for the lights as soon as they entered. She watched him take his mask, hat, and sunglasses off, putting them on the kitchen counter as he looked over at her.
"What am I doing here, Jungkook?" asked Lia.
"You asked to know my secret," said Jungkook. "So I'm going to show you even though...even though I'm a dead man for doing so."
Lia watched as Jungkook disappeared into the living room. He grabbed up a thick black binder that laid on the coffee table. Carrying it back out to the kitchen, he put it on the kitchen table. Lia rose a brow as she walked towards it; Jungkook moving a hand to open the front of the binder to reveal the sheet that was at the beginning.
"What is this?" Lia asked.
Jungkook watched Lia as she stared at the binder he had put on the table before her. It was sectioned off by days of the week; each tab weathered and worn from where it had obviously been flipped on a daily basis.
"This is the binder that contains our lives," said Jungkook as he pointed a finger at the calendar that acted as a cover page to the whole thing.
"Our? What do you mean our? And why is there a different name on each day?" asked Lia as she studied the blocks on the calendar.
She could clearly see that Monday's block belonged to Taehyung, Tuesday's belonged to Hoseok, Wednesday's belonged to Seokjin, Thursday's belonged to Jungkook, Friday's belonged to Namjoon, Saturday's belonged to Jimin, and Sunday's belonged to Yoongi.
"I know you won't believe this, and frankly I wouldn't either if I were you. However, this has been my life for what feels like forever now," said Jungkook as he leaned against the nearby kitchen counter and away from Lia. "I haven't told anyone this before, so you can't say anything."
"Jungkook, just tell me."
"Every day of the week has a different name with it because at midnight every day, I turn into a different person."
"You mean mentally?"
"Not just mentally. I physically do too. I change in every way possible. My thoughts are different. My actions. My intents. My appearance. We keep track of our lives in this binder. We communicate whether or not we're on medications, what obligations we might have going that the other will have to finish, what bills might need to be paid..."
"Every day you're a different person?"
"Yes," said Jungkook. "It's up to you whether you want to believe me or not."
