4. Hard Truths

Lia had a hard time believing what Jungkook was saying to her. Her first reaction to what he was saying was that it had to be some sort of elaborate lie that he was using to get her to leave him alone whenever he claimed he was 'busy'. However, she could see how vulnerable he looked; hanging his head down like a whipped puppy of sorts. It was hard for her to think him a liar when he looked like that.

"The others will kill me when they find out someone knows our secret," said Jungkook to the floor since he was unable to look at Lia, "But I want you to trust me."

Lia didn't like seeing Jungkook this upset, especially not after becoming best friends with the man. She walked past the binder, wrapping her arms about him in a hug.

"It's hard to believe, but I...I trust you," said Lia. "You've given me no reason not to. You just realize what this all sounds like to me, right?"

"I do," said Jungkook with a sigh, wrapping his arms about her back. "I just want you to know why I can't hang out tomorrow, or any other day that isn't Thursday."

"Stop beating yourself up and come talk with me about it then," said Lia as she pulled away from Jungkook. She moved towards the table to grab the binder, taking it into the living room with her; Jungkook following after.

"Your couch is comfier than mine," she teased as she sat down on it, getting him to crack a small grin as she looked at the calendar of names for a moment more. "Can you tell me about the others?"

And so Jungkook did. He sat down beside Lia and filled her on little facts about the other boys. Taehyung was apparently a flirt that liked to fool around. Hoseok was the cheerful one that always went about trying to find ways to brighten people's days. Seokjin was the one that was the best cook of all of them, and spent most of his day cooking and prepping meals for the rest of them to eat the rest of the week. Namjoon was the responsible one that was tasked with doing the bills and making sure the apartment was well stocked. Jimin was a free spirt that liked spending his day practicing his art. Yoongi was also a free spirit, but more of a cat like one as Jungkook put it. He liked spending his day writing lyrics in solitude.

"Of course we all take turns with working a job too. We all have the same job, but it's an online one under Namjoon's name since he's the one that needs access to the money for the bills. We never show our face online, and when we are forced to join a Zoom conference, we say the microphone and camera are broken," explained Jungkook.

"Why are you guys like this?"

"I...I don't want to talk about it today," said Jungkook, sounding exhausted. "Can it just be enough that I told you our secret?"

Lia nodded, putting the binder down on the coffee table in front of them as she moved to take one of Jungkook's hands in hers. He smiled softly as he held her hand back. He then proceeded to show her the rest of the tiny apartment which included the bathroom and a single bedroom. He showed her the bedroom closet that was sectioned off into seven little slivers with different looking wardrobes for each of the seven men.

"I'll write a note to Namjoon in the binder before midnight tonight," assured Jungkook as Lia moved to leave after the tour, standing in the entryway. "I finally need to be honest with them all about you. I just hope they accept you."

Lia nodded her head; still trying to wrap her mind around the impossibility surrounding it all. She spent that night staring at the ceiling in her bedroom; eyes instinctively flicking to the digital alarm clock by her head as the numbers turned to midnight. If what Jungkook said was to be believed, he was now gone until next Thursday. The thought made her sad as she rolled over onto her side so her back was to the alarm clock. She dragged her thin gray sheet up over her body as she watched shadows dance along the wall from the semi-curtained window. Half of her wanted to roll out of bed now and see if he was gone for herself, but she forced herself to get a few hours of sleep and wait until morning.

When morning came, Lia got up and got ready for the day. Today was the day she had to make a good first impression at her new job. As much as she wanted to see if what Jungkook said was true, she had something more pressing to take care of first. She washed up, combing and tying her hair back into a neat bun before picking out a black and white striped shirt and dark black dress pants. Just as she was putting the finishing touches on her look, she heard a knock at the door.

Quirking a brow, she quickly left the bathroom to walk towards the front door.

"Coming!" she called out as whoever it was knocked again, opening the door to see a man dressed all in black standing before her.

She stared back at him for a moment. If it was Jungkook, he would step into her apartment without asking and take off his disguise. Instead this other one just stood there, staring at her.

"Umm..." she said sounding awkward. "Can I help you?"

"Can I come in?"

She turned to look at the clock on the microwave. She supposed she had a bit more time until she had to be at her new job. Stepping aside, Lia let the man step into her apartment, shutting the door behind him.

"Are you Namjoon?" Lia finally asked to break the silence; the other whipping around so fast to face her that Lia was convinced he just gave himself whiplash. She chuckled.

"Jungkook told me your name yesterday," continued Lia.

"Right. Right. I forgot he told me that in his note."

Lia watched as he unfolded a note from his pocket, holding it out to her. Lia looked at the messy writing scrawled there.

'Namjoon, I made a new friend.
She knows our secret. I trust her.
I'd like it if you two met.
Her name is Lia, and she needs someone to be there with her today.
It's a big day for her.
Help her celebrate her new job.'

Lia stared in shock at the words, lifting her eyes back to look at the man that was still standing stoic near her kitchen counter; casting his eyes about the place.

"You're here to accompany me today?"

"I am," said Namjoon with a sigh. "I have bills to pay today anyway, so it's fine."

Lia didn't like the fact that she felt like another obligation to him, but didn't say anything.

"Can I at least see your face?" she asked.

Namjoon seemed to hesitate for a moment before removing the hat, sunglasses, and mask. The face that stared at her definitely wasn't Jungkook's. This man was still cute in his own way though. His cinnamon brown hair was shorter than Jungkook's; neatly parted on either side despite just having a hat on his head. His eyes were soft yet hard at the same time, clearly still debating whether or not to trust her.

"There. Now you can see it."

"Yes, I can," said Lia. "It's nice to see the man that took my cookies a few months ago."

Her remark startled Namjoon, causing him to smile. Lia smiled too, especially when she saw the deep set dimples appear on his face. This man seemed like he was all business, but maybe there was more to him than that like there had been more to Jungkook. She turned from him to look at the time.

"I have to go now or I'll be late," said Lia.

"I'm coming," said Namjoon as he put everything back on.

"You really don't have to," said Lia, "Especially if this is just another job for you."

Namjoon paused in Lia's entryway as she looked at him, seeming to be looking for the right words to say.

"This isn't just another job to me," said Namjoon finally. "I want to learn why Jungkook has trusted you with a secret we all swore never to tell anyone."
