EXTRA ORDINARY
"In the end, after our brother Ben had died and Delilah had left, there was really nothing connecting us. We were just strangers living under the same roof, destined to be alone, starved for attention, damaged by our upbringing and haunted by what might have been,"
Delilah is sat on a bright green beanbag in the middle of a library, people move around her as the day passes, and a worker tries to get her to leave.
"Ma'am if you don't have a library card -"
"Shhh, I've been name-dropped," Delilah holds up her hand, and her Umbrella Academy tattoo peeks out through her knitted jumper, the woman sighs and steps back.
EXTRA ORDINARY
A new day meant Delilah was receiving the exact same breakfast she'd consumed yesterday. Grace is frying some eggs and bacon and 3 orange juices are sat on the table. Allison and Luther exchange concerned looks and Delilah really is trying her best to avoid looking at them, she didn't want to know -
"Mom?" Luther starts "We need to ask you some questions about the night that Dad died,"
"What?" Delilah turns her head "Do you really think that's appropriate?" Allison shushes her.
"Do you remember anything Mom?" Luther continues and Grace turns
"Of course. Sunset, 7:33 p.m. Moon was waxing crescent, dinner was Cornish hen, wild rice, and carrots-"
"No. No, uh... later that night. In his bedroom. Did you go and see him?"
"What the hell is wrong with you Luther?" again, Delilah is ignored.
Grace chuckles "I don't recall," she continues to hum and Luther and Alisson mutter between them before Allison starts talking.
"Were you ever...I don't know, angry with Dad?"
Grace turns again "Your father was a good man. A kind man. He was very good to me,"
"Grace, you don't have to answer them if you don't want to," Delilah starts, standing up and walking over to the 'robot' "No one's in charge of you,"
"Oh it's fine Delilah dear," Grace reaches her hand up and strokes the blonde's cheek "They're just curious,"
"But it's not right-"
"After we all left, it must have been difficult,"
"Oh, there were days," Grace laughs, letting go of Delilah "You kids kept me oh so busy, and then..." she trails off, never finishing.
"What?"
"Mom, what were you gonna say?"
"Eggs are ready!" Grace grins, acting like nothing happened, gently pushing Delilah back to her chair "Sit down lovely, Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!" she manages to balance three plates and places them on the table "Now, eat up. All of you,".
Grace walks back to the stove, and Delilah looks down at her child-size potion of eggs and bacon, a smiley face stares back at her.
EXTRA ORDINARY
"Are you mental?!"
"He is Lilah, he absolutely is,"
"Oh, there we are again, the double D strikes again,"
"Ha, D!"
"Klaus!"
"Can you all shut up?!" Luther is stood in the living room, in front of an old TV which is playing a tape recording of Grace and Reginald.
"I mean, do you really think Mom would hurt Dad?" Vanya asks, turning to the room.
"You haven't been home in a long time, Vanya. Maybe you don't know Grace anymore,"
"Since when did she become 'Grace' to you Luther?" Delilah is standing next to Klaus who's loudly eating in her ear.
"I -" before he can respond, Diego steps in.
"If he was poisoned, it would have shown in the coroner's report,"
"Well, I don't need a report to tell me what I can see with my own eyes,"
"Maybe all that low gravity in space messed with your vision," Diego picks up the controller for the TV and rewinds "Look closer. Dad has his monocle. Mom stands up. Monocle's gone,"
Klaus laughs, stepping away "Oh yeah!"
"She wasn't poisoning him. She was... taking it. To clean it,"
"Then where is it? No, I've searched the house, including her things. She doesn't have it,"
"You went through her stuff?!" Delilah stays where she is, centre of the room.
"That's because I took it from her. After the funeral," Diego clarifies, twirling a knife.
"You've had the monocle this whole time? What the hell, Diego?" Delilah snorts, of course, Allison is with Luther.
"Give it to me!"
"I threw it away,"
"You what?"
"Look, I knew that if you found it on Mom, you'd lose your shit, just like you're doing right now," as Diego points, Delilah can sense a fight brewing and quickly searches the room for anything to throw.
"Diego...you son of a bitch," Luther starts approaching and Diego pulls his fists up.
"Hey. No. Calm down," Vanya raises her hands, and gives Delilah a warning look, seeing her reach for a knife strapped to Diego's back. "Look, I know Dad wasn't exactly...an open book. But I do remember one thing he said. Mom was, well, designed to be a caretaker, but... also as a protector,"
"What does that mean?"
"Are you stupid?"
Klaus snorts as Vanya glares "She was programmed to intervene if someone's life was in jeopardy,"
"Well, if her hardware is degrading, then...We need to turn her off,"
"What?"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, wait!" Delilah grabs Diego's wrist, holding him back, he doesn't shrug her off "She's not just a vacuum cleaner you can throw in a closet. She feels things, I've seen it!"
"She just stood there, Diego, and watched our father die,"
"I'm with Luther,"
"Surprise, surprise,"
"Oh of course you are Allison!" Delilah lets go of Diego's wrist, crossing her arms
"Shut up!"
"Oh! So, we don't talk about the weird incest anymore! Okay, okay,"
"Delilah! You shouldn't even be here,"
Delilah slowly turns on her heel to face Luther "Pardon?"
"You're not a part of the family,"
"What?!" three voices echo, none being Delilah or Allison, in Klaus' ear, he can hear some very strong words coming from his leather-clad brother.
"How dare you," Delilah stays still, but no one would stop her from lunging at Luther if she wanted to "How dare you. Grace is the closest thing I ever had for a mother because my biological one, was off wasting away her life drinking. Wasting away the money she got from your father from practically selling me! How fucking dare you! Your father made me a part of this family! So, if you don't like it, you should have taken it up with him! You self-righteous piece of living shit-" she does lunge this time, but Vanya steps in front and pushes her back.
"D! Delilah, come on,"
"Vanya let go of me,"
"No," Delilah looks down, staring Vanya in the eyes
"Let go, because I need to hit something, and if it isn't Luther's jaw, it might be you," Klaus laughs but seems to be listening to someone as he steps forward.
"Come Delilah," his tone is somewhat soft as he wraps an arm around her waist while she stares at Luther and Diego glares "Let's go get you an ice lolly, or some more fun stuff,"
"I'm not taking drugs with you Klaus!" Delilah shrugs him off her and starts storming out, spinning around last minute "This isn't something you vote on! It's not happening, end of!"
EXTRA ORDINARY
"How will the Umbrella Academy ever become an effective crime deterrent if we can't even leave the house on time for missions?! Come along, children! Come along!" Reginald is standing in the hallway where the kids' bedrooms are. Delilah is in her room next to Vanya's, taking some deep breaths as she stares at herself in the mirror, listening to Klaus laugh manically and Vanya play the violin.
She hears Ben shout in the hallway "Guys! Wait for me!"
"Like we'd forget!" she shouts out of her room and Ben gives her a grin as he runs past.
"Oh dear," Grace appears in Delilah's doorway, and gives her a sympathetic smile, looking at the young girl clad in leather, blonde hair scattered on the floor around her, and a pair of scissors in her hands "What happened here?"
"I couldn't tie my hair up..." Delilah starts "and - and I got angry and there were scissors and... Please don't be angry!"
Grace chuckles, entering the room properly "I'm not angry dear. Put the scissors down and pass me a brush," Delilah does as she's told, and Grace starts brushing through her hair, getting the strays out before she grabs a hairband, doing what she can with the mess.
"I'll fix it for you later. I think shoulder length would suit you,"
Delilah smiles, looking at Grace through the mirror "Thanks Mu-. Grace. Thanks Grace," she gives her a knowing smile and a kiss on the forehead before leaving.
"Don't forget your mask dear!".
