It's set in Britain!

Now I appreciate that not everyone is or is friends with a British person but as a Brit, it really irritates me when a writer (usually an American) messes some bigger things up. I'll be telling you, my wonderful readers, about the wonderful place that is the UK. If you have any questions after this chapter, feel free to comment or pm me :)

1) The countries

Britain is not just England. Let me say that again. BRITAIN👏IS👏NOT👏JUST👏ENGLAND👏. Britain, or the United Kingdom, is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (not the same as Ireland). Many people say British when they mean English. How is this related to the storyline? A lot of characters in the franchise are British but not English and some aren't British. For example, Oliver Wood and Seamus Finnegan are Irish but Luna Lovegood is Northern Irish. That is not the same. Cho Chang is Scottish as well, just a little fact for you.

2) Other words for things

We have a lot of different words for things so I'll just make a list. On the left is the American and the right is British. If you have any I haven't got and you are British feel free to comment.
-Eggplant = Aubergine
-Zucchini = Courgette
-Soccer = Football
-Restroom = Toilet/Loo/Bathroom
-Biscuit = Scone (Americans are really wrong on that!)
-Cookie = A hard cookie is a biscuit and a soft one is a cookie
-Pudding = Mousse/Custard
-Cop = Police officer
-Jelly = Jam
-Jello = Jelly
-Pants = Trousers
-Underpants = Pants
-Mom = Mum
-Trash = Rubbish
-Trash can = Bin

3) Slang and insults

I'll give you some British slang here. Keep in mind that not all of Britain uses this slang.
Pissed- Drunk or Angry
Piss off- Like fuck off but meaner
Twat/Numpty- An annoying and idiotic person
Dinky- Small and cute
Chippy- The fish and chip shop
Offie- Short for off license, a shop that sells alcohol and little things like chewing gum and chocolate bars

If you want to insult someone, call them an absolute _____. Like you can literally say anything, toilet roll, sandwich, orange slice.

4) Stereotypes

Not every British person is posh, drinks tea and rides horses in the gardens of their manor house. Not every Britsh person is a roadman who wears puffy jackets and hangs around yellng "What you looking at, fam?" and "Wagwan g". Not every British person is a chav who wears fake tan, Victoria's Secret perfume and calls everyone 'bruv'. And, most importantly, not every British child is Oliver Fucking Twist

5) Schools

There are a few differences between schools in Britain and schools in the US and in a lot of fanfics I've read, they are wrong. The main one that annoys me is that British schools do not finish in June! Americans have three months off of school for the summer but British people don't. Our school year normally finishes around the middle of July, for example, this year a lot of schools finished on the 20th and last year my school finished on the 18th. We usually finish on a Thursday or Friday but sometimes that can change

Another thing that annoys me is that a lot of you don't know how the schools work, so let me break it down for you. There are 4 schools. The first is primary school and the years go like this.
-Reception (age 4-5)
-Year 1 (5-6)
-Year 2 (6-7) You do first SATs here
-Year 3 (7-8)
-Year 4 (8-9)
-Year 5 (9-10)
-Year 6 (10-11) Second SATs here

Then you have secondary school and sixth form. Some people go to the same school for sixth form and some people go to a sixth form college. In year 11, you do your GCSEs and in sixth form, you do your A-levels. These are the big exams you do in secondary school.
-Year 7 (11-12)
-Year 8 (12-13)
-Year 9 (13-14)
-Year 10 (14-15)
-Year 11 (15-16)
-Year 12 (16-17)
-Year 13 (17-18)
Then you go to university.

You may be wondering how this relates to Harry Potter. Well, if you look at secondary school, you'll notice that it is very similar to Hogwarts. Seven years, you do exams in 5th and 7th year, we also have houses (it's not a made-up thing). However the thing about term ending is solely for muggles aus.

6) The fucking law

The drinking age in Britain is 18 not 21 or 16 as I've seen in many fanfictions. Also, we can drive at 17 not 16 like Americans so make sure you get these correct.
