three. world on fire
Athena had never felt like this before. It was like a sudden burst of fire, an explosion of rage and an overwhelming flood of anger all at one.
She was at a loss for words. She never had a reason to hate her roommate before, but now she loathed Ari.
"Where the fuck did you guys go last night? You just sorta left us there!" She yelled, shutting the door to their room as she recalled the moment she was left stranded at the club with Marie, having to call her roommate Emma to pick them up.
"We had to leave. I'm sorry, I really am." Ari looked down, avoiding any type of eye contact.
"We could've gotten busted because of your brothers ass." She wanted to scream, wanted to do anything, but she didn't, she just listened to what Ari had to say.
"But we didn't. No one did. And look." Ari pointed to the tv where a broadcast was talking about a woman at the club who was saved. "Marie is a hero."
"No thanks to any of you. Maybe you were right. Your brother's friends are lame, but so are you."
"You don't understand."
"What I've gathered is that I don't understand because you don't tell anyone anything. You just bottle up these stupid emotions. Like the ones you have for Jordan Li, why the fuck do you even hate them so much?"
"I just do." She ignored the question completely.
"See my point exactly."
"It's stupid okay, but it's just the way they acted when we first met. It's like they already grouped me to be a weaker, second class citizen. It's like I'm not even a supe to them, and I know I can't control my powers well, but I don't want to be reminded of that whenever I walk into a goddamn room."
"So you just don't like them because they make you feel weak?"
"And other things.." She looked down at the dorm rooms dark fluffy carpet, patted down from years of wear.
"What other things?"
"The reason I took a gap year. I promise I'll tell you eventually but I just can't now."
"Eventually?" She questioned.
"Eventually." Ari assured her, trying to drop the conversation there.
"I'm sorry. I don't want to be mad at you."
"You have every reason to be mad at me. It was stupid. I wanted to go back for you guys, but they wouldn't turn the car around. I should have done more to stop them from leaving both of you."
"It's okay. I can't be mad at you forever, it's not even your fault." She gave her a hug, letting it sink in. "And you really need to apologize to Jordan. You were an asshole last night."
Ari knew she was going to have to eventually, so she decided that she was going to attempt to do it, at perhaps the worst time possible.
✯★⁂★✯
Ari noticed Jordan packing their things, ready to leave professor Brink's office for the evening.
"I really need to talk to you." She called out to them.
"So you can attempt to shit talk me, and make a fool out of yourself?" They smiled, amused at just the the thought of it.
"No, quite the opposite." She was trying everything in her not to go off on them, and by some miracle she succeeded.
"Look I have to go. You can follow me if you want, but I have stuff to do. Some of us have more important things than sitting around and complaining."
"Then I'll follow you." She trailed behind them, closely, not letting them get away from her, and ignoring their last response.
"Great." They said in a sarcastic tone, enough to set Ari off.
"Don't look so upset. It makes you look less attractive. And look, your friend's coming."
She nodded in the direction as she noticed Luke coming up to them with a look of determination.
"So you think I'm attractive?"
"Shut up." She mouthed, and reminded them to talk to Luke as he approached them.
"Hey man. How you feel? 'Cause i'm sweating cocaine." Jordan said to him, but he didn't respond, he just kept walking towards Brinks office, as they walked away from it. They shook it off and just continued to walk.
"I've been an ass." Ari started, trying to keep up with their already fast pace.
"That much is clear."
"But, so have you and I'm not-"
Ari was cutoff by a very obviously mad Marie. "Do either of you know what Brink's doing to protect all of you?"
They all stopped in the middle of the hall, silent for just a second as Jordan thought of what to say.
"What are you talking about?" Jordan asked confused, being even more confused when they received no answer.
They looked back at her for a second as she walked off, before Ari continued. "Right, now that there's no more interruptions... I've put some more thought into it, thanks to Marie, and I'm actually not going to apologize like I thought I was going to, because I know you don't care, so I'm here to warn you to stop messing with me."
"Before last night we haven't talked in two years. What do you mean stop messing with you? And you came all the way here just to tell me that you aren't going to apologize?"
She almost stayed silent, suddenly thinking she got it all wrong, and feeling like a fool.
"We haven't talked in years for a reason. You know why. And yes."
"Fuck, I'm telling you. I didn't have shit to do with that night."
"I don't fucking believe you." She looked at them, now in their female form.
"You don't have to believe me. You don't even have to talk to me. I'm friends with Andre, not you. We can just go back to pretending we don't know each other, like before."
She almost wished she could forget, maybe it would be better. But she couldn't. Jordan had engraved that moment into her head. They were a constant reminder. That's why she stayed away, and now they went from being a tiny fragment in her life, to being the center of it.
"Fine. I have no clue who you are." Ari started walking off, though she knew she could never forget Jordan. There were so many memories spent together she could never erase from her mind.
"Wait, before we go back to pretending we don't exist to each other, what would you do if I didn't leave you alone? If I just kept talking to you, and bothering you. You haven't used your powers in public in years."
"I'd call campus security, and get you away from me. There's things you can do without your powers, but I don't know if you know that."
Just as Ari was about to turn back around __ being in front of them__ she heard Marie scream "run!"
She looked back at Jordan, Marie, and the papers she knocked out of Jordan's hands when she ran into them.
"Hey, what the fuck?" They called out, pissed that they would have to pick up all the paperwork they spent hours organizing, but also concerned.
"Marie!" Luke groaned covered in flames.
Ari stepped closer to them. She was practically defenseless unless she wanted to take out everyone, including herself.
Jordan looked down for a split second at Luke's naked body, quickly returning their eyes to his. "Uh, Luke, what's, uh.. what's going on? Maybe put your dick away?"
"Move." Luke said firmly.
"Not until you chill out."
"You're in on it, too." He claimed in a panic.
"Jordan back up." Ari uttered out of fear. She somehow guessed what was coming next.
"Luke, what the fuck is going on?" They asked even more concerned now.
"Move!" He gave his final warning, before blasting a flame at Jordan, making them switch into their male form.
"Go! Now!" Jordan shouted at Marie and Ari. "Go!"
Marie nodded, understanding that she needed to run, but Ari wasn't going to let Jordan fight the number one student alone.
Before this year Ari wasn't able to control her powers well enough to use them in combat. It's why she started the ranking so low, despite her father being a famous supe, and why she spent extra time learning how to fight without her powers.
Her power was like a mixture of her dad's and her brother's, but the compound v affected her a little more differently. She had the potential to be a hundred times stronger, could manipulate more than her brother, more than metal, yet her powers were sometimes unpredictable. At least they were ever since the incident.
She let Jordan handle Luke in the beginning as they took him on switching between their male and female form. They blasted their powers at him and caught him completely off guard, he usually won fights. At first it seemed like they were winning, but once they punched him in the dick it was over.
Luke was able to overcome their punch and slammed them on the floor, kicking them across the room in one quick motion.
This sort of awakened something in Ari. No she didn't like Jordan anymore, but she didn't want to see them get their ass completely kicked.
"Fuck, come on Luke. What happened to last night?" She spoke as she rose her hand and sent a part of the floor flying up, separating Jordan from Luke. She was close to hitting one of them, her powers still so incapable of being controlled to its full extent.
He blast through the wall, with almost complete ease and picked Jordan up only to slam them through glass, right toward a series of bleachers.
Luke was about to walk outside with Jordan down, but Ari raised her hand once more. She set him off balance, long enough to distract him and give Jordan time to recover.
"Luke." Jordan stood on the top bleacher, jumping and slamming Luke's fiery body to the ground.
The fact that Jordan was able to practically hold up on their own against golden boy impressed Ari.
After a few hits back and forth Jordan sent Luke plummeting into the wall with their sonic powers.
"Luke it's going to be okay. Calm down." They tried to talk him through, but it didn't work. Jordan transformed again into their male form, fighting , and then back into their female form, this time being slammed into the wall their self.
Ari wanted to do something, but when she lifted her hand the wall behind Luke started to crumble, doing nothing but causing unnecessary damage.
Luke put one hand around Jordan's neck and lifted them up, choking them till they went unconscious.
"What the fuck!" Ari cried out, not able to do anything but use her own fist. She punched Luke, knowing that using her power wouldn't work. It didn't do any damage, but it sent him to the floor. She was strong, which came in handy when she couldn't use her powers.
"Why are you helping them?" Luke said as Marie looked into his lifeless eyes. There was nothing behind them, it was like he wasn't controlling himself.
"Luke what do you mean? I'm not helping anyone. You just need to calm down. You hurt Jordan. I know you care about them, you're a good friend."
Luke didn't answer her. He sent a flame toward her, but she dodged it, by some miracle.
Ari knew she couldn't control her powers well but she suddenly came up with an idea where that would help her. She would send him below the school by moving the ground beneath him. It would most likely ruin more than she intended, but he would be away from the others.
As she was about to move the floor beneath him, he hit her again, making her off balance. She knew, in that moment, that she lost any chance she had to get rid of the floor. If she did she could cause more destruction than needed, a risk she couldn't take.
One moment she was thinking of something to do, and the next she was laying on the floor, unable to do anything after her head hit the ground with a loud bang from the impact of a punch from Luke.
She watched as he left the building, no one else able to stop him.
In the next few minutes everything was a blur. She knew she ran outside, but she had no control over herself.
She couldn't stop Luke now, even if she gave it her all, but she noticed that she wouldn't have to. Luke was holding onto Andre in a loving hug, whispering something only he could hear.
"Luke, come on." Andre could see the fear in Luke's eyes as everyone stared at him.
"I'm so sorry." His eyes turned a shade of orange, like embers, before he set himself on fire.
Ari reached for him. She knew what was about to happen and she couldn't let it. Yet he was just out of reach.
Luke flew into the air, pausing for a second before an immense explosion lit up the sky, sending blood and guts down to the ground.
The last thing Ari did was scream as the warmth of the blood rushed down her whole body.
