Prologue

Far from the civilization of humans, there is a wild, beautiful land. Made up of mountain, forest, meadow, and lake, it is a place untouched by modern times. It is here, in this land, that six dog packs rule.

Each has their own territory and have a similar culture; all regard each other with the same tension and cool politeness--or snarling hostility. But there is a large difference between these packs for one reason: they only have certain dog breeds in their pack.

Up on the rocky slopes and forests of the mountainside lives Frost Pack, the pack of sled and mountain dogs. They are quiet and reserved to the other packs, and sometimes even with their own pack. They are resilient and have great endurance, having weathered many harsh winters upon the unforgiving slopes of the mountain.

Down from the territory of Frost Pack, the clumps of trees thicken into a large pine forest with a carpet of needles and ferns. It is here that the proud Storm Pack lives; they allow shepherds alone to enter their ranks, insisting that their blood is the purest. Out of all the packs, they revere pure blood the most. They are fierce and hostile to outsiders, but tight-knit and loyal within the pack.

Passing over Storm Pack territory, the pines begin to give way to deciduous trees, leading us into the realm of Night Pack. This pack consists of large, powerful fighting dogs. They are somewhat open about what breeds they will accept, however, and bull-type terriers and mastiffs are not the only dogs within their borders. They are famous for their fighting ability--even their hunters have an extensive knowledge of combat. They are mostly indifferent to the other packs; they offer no help and expect none.

In the center of the territories their is a wide lake, born of a waterfall in Frost Pack's mountains. Streams run out of it, flowing into Night Pack and Storm Pack's territories. There are a few small islands poking out of the surface of the water, but the largest is the home of the dogs of Lake Pack. Retrievers, setters, spaniels, and hounds are what populate this pack, and these breeds have made Lake Pack renowned for its hunting ability. These dogs are the friendliest out of the packs; they will generally be the first to offer help and typically aren't afraid to ask for it, either.

Lake Pack has a single treeless shore, and this marks the border of Wind Pack. The swiftest pack, they live on a sprawling, grassy meadow and collies and herding dogs are their breeds. This pack's distinguishing trait is their fair minds and clear thoughts, and they are also very intelligent.

The pack territories seem to end here, but they in fact do not. For the sixth pack's territory is hidden; it lies beneath Wind Pack's meadow. Here, tunnels and caves have been carved out by Earth Pack, the pack of Dachshunds and terriers. They are considered the queerest of all the packs because of their propensity to live underground and also the fact that they are made up of small dogs, rather than the much larger dogs of the other five packs. Earth Pack does not tolerate any demeaning remarks about themselves, however. They are tough and ferocious, refusing to be underestimated or overlooked. Underneath their exteriors, however, beat good hearts full of loyalty to their packmates.

These six packs, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, are who this tale is about. This is the story of eight dogs within these packs, of how they fought their own inner battles. This is also the story of a battle that they would all fight; the battle that would change the world as they know it.
