Chapter 06

Kim sighed as she looked up from her machine. She was once again seated behind the machine to complete the order for a high class widow who had wanted five new dresses sown by her. Kim scratched her forehead absentmindedly, as she remembered the boy with whom she had fallen in love with. It had been two months since their fateful first meeting, but ever since then, she had not seen a wind of the boy. She had even tried trespassing stealthily towards the Royal Air Force camp borders, but yet, however long had she stared at the passing soldiers who were jogging, patrolling, or even going towards their various day to day works and duties, some even giving her the wicked eye, had not been the blue eyes she had been searching for.

Kim sighed once more. She cracked her knuckles lazily and looked up towards the creaking fan on the ceiling.

"Oh, dear William.... Wherever are you?" she mumbled as a trickle of sad tear escaped through her lashes. She did not understand why. But she knew that she was being stupid, considering that the boy had just helped her get out of the way of death, when she was reading too much into the situation and was wondering where her prince charming was.

Shaking her head at her own sense of stupidity, as she heard her mother's unmistakable footsteps which were about to enter into her tailor shop, Kim looked at the dress she was stitching and stamped on the pedal, as her mind clouded on the love of her life, and his eyes swam into focus in front of hers.

*

William scratched his eyebrows. He was once again patrolling the boundaries near the camp. It was the second time of patrolling the same area, where he gets only a very less chance for patrolling as he is yet a junior officer, who was new for his rank. William craned his neck even for the slightest sound of a footstep, as he felt his heart beat grow louder.

"Are you alright mate?" Tom asked William, not being able to keep his doubts to himself as he saw his friend look up hopefully for the umpteenth time.

William looked at Tom from the corner of his eyes and grunted as his reply. Tom scratched his eyebrows and looked concernedly at William.

"I have known you for a very long time Will. You know that yourself, and I know that I don't have to remind it for you again and again. Tell me, what's bothering you?" he asked, placing a hand over William's shoulder.

William bit his lips, wondering whether it was the time to reveal what had been bothering his mind for so long.

"There's this girl..." he started looking stealthily at Tom.

"Ah, the one we saw at the bar?" Tom asked sagely as William looked surprised at him.

"How do you know everything Tom?" he asked laughing, amazed at his friend's uncanny ability for being able to read his mind. Tom nodded smiling.

"Let's forget it for the moment. Now it's time to hear from you." he replied and waited as William still looked amazed at him.

"Ok. Yeah, she's the girl..." William started. He did not understand how, but he found himself talking aloud the thoughts that had been bothering him for the past two months. He felt easy to reveal everything to Tom now that he had started.

"So, you are telling me that since the day you have saved her, this is the second time you are patrolling the same area but you have not met the girl once again because you were so busy going on various missions for the past two months?" Tom asked, rubbing his chin thoughtfully.

"Yeah, that summarizes everything, more or less." William nodded thinking deeply.

Tom remained silent as William looked up hopefully at him.

"So, what are you thinking now?" William asked finally, not being able to contain himself as he saw Tom pondering on some thoughts for himself.

"The answer here is simple Will." Tom said slowly, looking carefully around the soldiers around them, who were minding their own various businesses. He looked down at William, who was adjusting the rifle on his shoulder.

"What is it?" he asked, looking up at Tom.

"Do you know where she lives?" he asked.

"Yeah, her tailor shop is the one around the corner," William replied quickly. Tom nodded, a beam going up his face as his mind pondered on what William had said.

"Then it's just some easy work mate." he said, clapping his hands together in excitement. William's eyebrows scrunched up. He did not like the gleam in Tom's eyes because he practically knew the consequences of where Tom will end up William, when he had that glint in his eyes.

"No!" William said suddenly, as Tom's eyes betrayed the plan that was forming in his mind. "Erase whatever the thoughts on your head mate. We are not leaving the camp to look for Kim." he said, shaking his head to the sides, as Tom howled with laughter.

"You know me better than my own self Will." he said, as William chuckled. "But the plan's on and yep we are following it, no matter what." he hissed the last three words determinedly, looking into William's face.

William looked at Tom. He knew how daring can he be, but at the same time it was what bothered him the most. He knew how stubborn Tom can be when he put his mind into something, and how it miraculously always ended up as more trouble for himself.

"We are better off where we are, at the moment." William said halfheartedly, more to himself than to Tom.

Tom shook his head. "You listen to me here, mate. I know what to do." he said on a final note, when William had a sudden daring on his own heart.

He was an officer now. When worst comes to worst, his rank will be removed. Did he dared to do it? Or will he coward back, letting someone else take Kim? No, he can't let that happen. For the sake of his love, he dared follow the idea on Tom's mind. For he knew that he would do anything, anything, for her.

*

Kim stretched her arms above her head, in a very ungirly like fashion and hissed as she felt the freshness take over her body as she felt her stiff bones creak into place once more. It was nearly six in the evening, and as the darkness was already falling, she had decided to stop for the day. Ms. High Class's dresses were made with materials which were too heavy for the girl, but she did not have any choice but to continue. She had started a raging war with the material, and it was just the material or her now. She was not in a mind to give up anytime soon, because she knew that even she can be stubborn whenever she needed.

Closing her eyes tight and opening them once more, Kim closed the machine behind her, and turned back, going towards the door to the shop. She let herself out, locked the door securely and turned back.

"William"

Kim's eyes grew large in surprise as she was taken aback by the silent shadow which had fallen over her and she saw those blue eyes, which she had longed for so long.

"Kim"

William smiled, as he felt a warmth spread around his body, starting from where his heart had already melted.

Kim smiled dazedly at him as she felt her heart make goosebumps rise up on her skin.

"How, how, how are you?" she stumbled over her words, as William bit on his lips.

"You told me where to find you." he whispered back his answer, as he bored into those brown eyes, which he had dreamed of for a very long time.

"Yes, yes, yes I did." Kim cried in surprise as William laughed, tears springing up his eyes. He was too pleased with himself.

"Shall we go in, please?" William asked softly, looking carefully around him to make sure that there were no any higher ranking officers in the area.

"Yea, yea sure." Kim mumbled and she hurriedly opened the door behind her. They stepped in quickly and she turned back as William locked the door behind them.

"Er, I am not allowed to come out without a leave." he tried to explain himself. "If any officers see me, I am -" he stopped in half and sighed, thinking that he should keep it a secret for himself. He looked up and saw that Kim was smiling.

"I have been here for a lon' time. So, I know how it is for you sol'iers." she replied, as William smiled, feeling lighter than he had felt for a long time.

"I was waiting for you for a lon' time, you know." Kim said before she could stop herself. Her eyes grew big as she realized what she had said, and she slapped her hands over her mouth.

William found a smile playing across his lips as he tried to conceal it for himself.

"Me too," darling... he said the final word for himself. He felt ecstatic. He had been thinking for a long time, worried that whether it was just himself who was having all the feelings, but he knew for sure that even Kim was feeling the same way as he was.

Kim smiled softly. She knew that she should not have said anything of the sort for a complete stranger, but the difference here was that Kim who had been always maintained a very long distance with all other males she had come across, with William, the case was completely different. She found herself saying things where she would not even have dared to think about in any other occasions. She did not know how, but she felt as though she had known him for a long time, and that she did not have to worry about anything on what she was telling him because she knew that he was the one for her.

William smiled as he looked into her eyes, which were boring deeply into his.

"I was on a mission." he replied. He bit back on his tongue as he found his lips trying to form a smile, looking at her large eyes.

"Mission?" she repeated, confused.

"Yep. I am a," William looked around carefully to make sure that only the two of them were in the shop.

"It's just the two of us here." Kim whispered back secretly, keeping her hand to her mouth.

William smiled. He pushed his rifle towards his back and took one step closer. "I am a Royal Air Force Pilot, you see." he whispered to her ear, leaning closer. He remained looking at Kim from her side, and falling in love all over with her, when she slowly turned her head to the side, blinking slowly at him.

"Whoa," she whispered in amazement.

William smiled. She was covering her mouth in wonder as she turned towards him. Being this closer to her, he noticed how her pupils extracted in surprise, and how the lines on her eyes creased whenever she smiled and the lightest shadow of freckles on her nose. He found it all making her more beautiful than she already was, and he stopped himself very hardly, before he pressed his lips onto her cheek.

*

Kim was amazed. She had never known an officer personally before, and not even have dreamed of knowing any pilots. She turned to her side and saw that William was smiling at her. He was leaned down towards her, with his hands tied behind him and his lips were turned up in a corner. Being this closer towards him, Kim found herself taking a deep breath inside, trying to pull back in his beautiful smell, which she had found herself longing for a long time. It was the smell of chocolate and vanilla mixed together with a hint of cinnamon.

Kim bit her lips. She was finding it so hard to contain herself when she started to notice the lines on his hard cheek and how there was a hint of a stubble on his chin. She did not miss the shadow of the long dried scar on the side of his cheek, and she stopped herself soon, before she started to trace them with her fingers.

*

The tinkling of a bell on a far corner of a pub door opening and closing was heard, and it pulled them back into reality. William smiled as he straightened up and Kim too looked down shyly at her feet, as she noticed that William was standing too close to her.

"Kim," William started. He gently placed his arms on her shoulders and turned her towards him.

"Yes William," Kim whispered as she looked into his eyes.

"I -" he stopped himself as he saw how hopeful she was looking at him. He stared into her beautiful eyes and found himself wondering when he will be able to look at them once more.

"I -" he started once more but stopped himself. He knew that he had forever to confess to her and this was neither the time nor the place for that.

"Yes William, what do you have to tell me?" Kim asked, wondering whether he was going to say the same words which were stumbling through her mind ever since the day she had met him.

"Erm," William thought back. He looked down at his watch and saw that Kim's face was starting to cloud with fear.

"If I say that I have to go back now, will you be sad?" William asked in a very soft voice, as he slowly stroked Kim's soft cheek.

She looked deep into his eyes and pressed her cheek closer towards his large hand, as she found them comforting. She did not reply, instead kept on staring into his eyes.

"I don't know why I am like this, but this is just the third time we are meeting." William said, removing his hand from her cheek and scratching his eyebrow while laughing. He had been staring at her eyes for so long, but now he found that he could not look at them anymore as he knew that he was about to break her heart. He took a step back.

"Even I don' know." Kim whispered, as she took a brave step forward. William looked down at her.

"I have been thinking of you for a very long time, Kim." William confessed finally, as he was not able to contain himself back any longer. He looked into her eyes once more.

Kim nodded. "I know." she whispered back, as William smiled at her.

"I don't know what you are making me do, darling." he mumbled back, a ghost of a smile on his face as his eyes overflowed with love. Kim smiled.

William opened his hand to her. Kim looked down at it. Without any hesitation, Kim placed her hand on his. William laughed as tears sprung up his eyes.

"Kim darling," William started as he tightly held her hand on his. He was amazed at how small they were and how perfectly their hands fit.

"I know that I am too quick in taking things forward, but trust me, I am a RAF Pilot and I know how wrong things can go and I don't even know when we will meet once more." he said hurriedly, as Kim looked up at him.

"So," he said, making up his mind at last. "I promise to come back to you." he placed his free hand on her cheek and rubbed them softly. Kim nodded, as though she was a small child who was promised of sweets from her father. "But until then, I want you to -" he stopped as his eyes searched through hers and he wondered whether he had the rights to say what he was thinking, considering that it was the first date they were having as lovers.

"Think of you." Kim finished his sentence for him, with a smile up on her face as William's eyes lit up once more.

"Yeah..." he said softly as Kim looked down shyly at her feet. "Think of me."

William chuckled and he raised up her chin with both of his hands. "Look at me." he whispered as their eyes met once more.

"Will you promise to come back to me, William?" Kim asked, as she looked into his eyes. She saw the mixture of emotions which went over his blue eyes, but she waited for his answer. She wanted to listen to it from himself.

"Yes darling, yes, I promise. I'll promise to come back to you." he whispered, as Kim's eyes lit up.

She smiled and she took one step forward as William held her shoulders and pulled her closer towards him. Kim closed her eyes and put her arms around his body as she pressed herself closer towards him. Her cheek was pressed onto his chest, and she smelled him deeper, as though she was trying to drink in his smell to absorb herself in the smell.

William tightened the grip around her shoulder and stroked her head lovingly, as he pressed his cheek onto her head. It smelled of lavender and had a hint of lemon. Looking at her was enough to make him sure that she was the one for him, and that thought alone was what had made him take matters further than a normal first date would go.

*

They remained in each other's arms, drinking in the moment, hoping against hope for that moment to last forever. But both of them knew that time did not stop whenever one needed to. So after what felt like an eternity, which felt so long and so short at the same time, they released themselves, but not completely. They loosened their grip but yet remained in each other's arms.

"Darling," William whispered.

"Hm?" Kim asked softly, leaning her chin up on his chest.

"It's time." he said guiltily. He saw Kim's face cloud in sadness.

"Oh." she replied, but she did not release her arm around him, instead she tightened it once more.

"So, I have to go back now." William laughed at her, as he saw her expression. But he too did not let her go soon.

"Just a minute lon'er." she mumbled as she pressed her cheek into his chest once more and closed her eyes.

She heard William's racing heartbeat and knew that it was time to let him go. She started to count for hundred, and when it finally reached a hundred and fifty, Kim stepped back and removed her arms from around him.

"There, you can go now." she replied playfully, trying to stop the sadness from rooting down her cheeks. William took a deep breath. He was feeling sad himself, but he tried to not to show them from his eyes. He smiled bravely at her.

"I don't know when I will get another chance to come back darling, but I will come for sure. If I go into any missions or know that I will not be able to come back for you anytime soon, I will send you news with my friend Tom. He is also a RAF Pilot, a junior officer, still a rank lower than me." he said.

Kim nodded. "Promise me that you will be careful." she whispered, as she suddenly felt a fear overcome in her heart. She did not want to think of the consequences of what will happen to William when he goes on any mission.

William chuckled, but he nodded all the same. "I promise." he whispered as he took a step closer and pressed his lips lightly on her forehead, stroking her cheeks.

"Goodbye then, my darling." William whispered as she nodded.

"Goo'bye, my love." Kim said softly, as William smiled and nodded towards her. He stroked her cheek for one last time, and stepped out of the shop as Kim opened the door for him. She leaned on the door frame and kept on looking at his figure, as it grew smaller and smaller on her vision.

Once he was completely camouflaged in the darkness, Kim sighed, and she locked the door securely behind her. Silently, as though she saw in a daze, Kim dawdled back towards her home and got into her room, without having dinner. She leaned back on the locked door, as her eyes brought back his adorable face into her mind.

Sighing deeply, as both sadness and happiness hugged her close, Kim went to the bed and laid back down, dreaming of the man of her heart. She knew that if her mother knew what she had done today, she will be in very big trouble. She heard her constantly nagging her siblings as they went to sleep, and she was grateful that she had a room for herself, for she knew that there was a mad glint in her eyes, and her face was rich with emotions, which will be hard to hide from anyone. Even though the room was just large enough in length for her to raise her arms, where she will touch the two walls on opposites, she was grateful for that.

As sleep did not seem to come any closer to her, Kim turned to her side, closing her eyes as she remembered his smell once more. She relived the feel of being in his arms, and how wonderfully their hands had fit. She knew that in the corner of her mind, and from all of her heart, she was hoping to be back with him sooner. For a mad fraction of a second, she wondered whether she will be able to meet him once more if she rushed to the campsite and even climb on the wall and wait for him. But as soon as the thought crept up on her mind, she erased it at once. She knew that he will be in very big trouble then and thinking that he should be safe and without any trouble, Kim closed her eyes tight, dreaming of being in his arms, as she felt the warmth of his lips, still on where he had kissed her.

*

William turned to his left and right. He had changed his patrol duty with John, who had agreed delightedly, when Tom had laid out the plan for the four of them. All four; John, Ben, Matt and Joe were filled in by Tom, about William and his love while they were waiting lookout for him. They had been only too pleased to help him, and John had even been kind enough to switch patrol duties with William so that he can have as much time as he needed to spend with his love.

William smiled for himself as he remembered how adorable Kim was. He knew that he should not have behaved the way he had behaved today because he knew that it was both not accepted and that as Kim was a girl, even she will not accept it. But Kim being in the same level of mirroring his feelings with hers, it had not been much of an issue.

William chuckled softly and sighed deeply. He knew that he will not be able to sleep tonight as a memory of a girl in the size of a peanut was constantly bothering him. He was amazed at how soon Kim had fallen in love with him, and he knew that he was not the only one who was looking forward of meeting her the next time. He did not know when that will be, but he knew that that day will definitely come. Thinking of the day that will not come towards him in the near future, William was actually pleased of the way of how their sudden meeting had gone. He knew that being a pilot in RAF meant that he had his life on tenterhooks during the period of war, and that reason alone made him be satisfied of the evening he had spent with the love of his life.

William turned to his side. He closed his eyes as her beautiful eyes came up to his mind and her smell hugged him close. He loved the feel of her in his arms and he knew that he will be longing to hold her in his arms once more. Counting the days until he will finally meet her once more, William closed his eyes tight, as he dreamed, she was still in his arms, with her cheeks pressed close to his heart.
