Chapter 15

Zia looked up at the gate once more. She changed her weight from one foot to the other as she waited impatiently at the exit. She looked up at the information display on the wall and saw that Vian's flight was still on air. Releasing a deep breath from out of her mouth, Zia smiled for herself as her fingers automatically moved towards the chain on her neck.

"Hurry up, Vian." She mumbled for herself and smiled at the young girl who was waiting beside her. Trying to calm down her racing heartbeat, Zia went towards the long window. She saw many people hurry towards their various destinations when Zia suddenly turned towards the display once more.

With a beam which started to light up her face, Zia saw that Vian's flight was touching down and was on the runway. With excitement peeking through her heart, Zia patted down her hair once more and closed her eyes taking a deep breath.

It was as though by instinct that Zia's eyes sprang open as she heard the unmistakable sound of the siren of an ambulance. Zia turned her head as her heart started to hammer loudly in her chest. She looked up once more as her eyebrows rose up on her forehead as she saw that Vian's flight was marked red in the display.

Her world started to crumble in front of her very eyes when the bouquet of flowers fell down from her hands.

"The medics are hurrying."

Zia turned her head to the side as she heard two airport officers talking. She hurried towards them and pulled out her doctor's id.

"Hi, I am a doctor. Can I also help them?" she asked as the older man looked pleased and nodded hurriedly.

"Yes please," he said, and Zia hurried at the way he pointed.

Zia tied her hair into a high ponytail as she ran hurriedly towards the accident. She saw medical assistance going towards the runway and she hurried with them.

"Oh God!" Zia exclaimed.

All she could see was smoke. She coughed and covered her nose with her sleeve as she hurried towards the majestic aircraft. She saw that many ambulances were already hurrying up and down trying to admit patients and Zia knew that she will not be able to meet Vian at the moment as she had to go back to duty once more.

Zia did not know what had happened to the aircraft. She was able to see the nose and wing compartments burning with live fire, even though the fire fighters were putting up a big fight to emanate it. She bit her lips as she waited until the fire was put down because no one was allowed to go too near the aircraft now, and she waited even though her heart beat grew louder on her chest. She found herself praying to God that there should not be any casualties and all passengers and crew should be safe even though the scene looks crucial.

It felt like an eternity had passed until the fire was completely put down. No other flight was landed in the taxiway and in the busy schedule of the airport, hundreds upon hundreds of people hurried their way towards the aircraft, trying to take out the passengers and bring them to safety.

Zia hurried behind an old man as she helped two nurses hoist an old woman from out of the aircraft. The woman's face was covered in blood as Zia felt for her pulse. Sighing in contentment as she felt a pulse in her hand, Zia turned to the nurse and spoke.

"Give her an IV," the nurse nodded and with the help of all three of them, they took the woman to the nearest ambulance. Zia hurried back as she lifted up a five year old boy up on to her arms and she hurried back.

"Get me an ice pack," Zia shouted as the boy cried in pain. Zia pressed the ice pack onto his forehead and wiped the blood from the side of his face. "Can you hold this for me please, darling?" she asked kindly at the boy when he stopped his tears for a second to stare at her.

"Yeah, I think so." He replied as Zia smiled and stroked his hair.

"I'll come back for you." Zia replied and making the boy sit on a van which was taking stable patients to the hospital, she hurried back once more.

"Dear Lord," Zia exclaimed as she saw many bodies lying on the ground. Some bodies were burnt so badly that the face was not visible. She coughed as black smoke burnt her throat, but she did not give up. She knew that she had to do her duty as a doctor and she turned to look for more people, who needed her.

"Everything will be alright dear," Zia whispered to a young girl, who was crying while looking for her friend. She helped the girl to her feet, and she quickly checked her to see if there were any major concerns, but noticing none, she helped the girl towards the ambulance.

Zia did not know how long time had passed. The night was completely fallen, and she sighed as she took a deep breath inside. She sank back heavily onto her feet and panted. Zia closed her eyes and rubbed her forehead tightly as she wondered what might have happened for the aircraft to crash suddenly. She had seen many injured people, some dead, some alive and some in a barely alive stage. Even though she knew that she should not think about him, Zia's mind wandered back to Vian, for she knew that it was the flight which he was flying.

"Let him be okay, please let him be okay." Zia prayed silently, as she stood up from the ground. She noticed many officers in the flight, and she knew that they were from the investigation team. No patients were in the field anymore and before the last ambulance left from the airport, Zia hurried into it as she knew that the ambulance was headed into her hospital.

Tears clouded Zia's eyes as she saw the relatives and loved ones of the passengers crowded around the airport waiting for any news. She pulled her lips inside and bit into it as she did not want to think what sort of turmoil, they were in. She leaned her head back on the seat as the ambulance hurried towards the hospital and she tried to close her eyes for a second as she knew that it will be a tiring night for her in the hospital.

Zia did not know how long time had passed before the ambulance finally pulled into the hospital. She hurried towards her ward and saw that there were many children who were waiting for surgery, due to the sudden air crash. Pulling her white coat over her shoulders, Zia hurried towards the operation theater, as she pulled pins and needles in and out through the children arms and legs as she sewed in various wounds, that scarred the children forever.

*

Zia sighed deeply. She had spent nearly a good part of the night in the operation theater, and she came out of it feeling exhausted. The rush of excitement she had felt six hours ago had left her completely, as she noticed that there were more patients bringing in for her hospital, as other hospitals were filled or that they needed immediate assistance. Zia went to her ward once more and stared around the silent room. All of her old patients were sleeping soundly, and she closed the door behind her softly, so that none of them will wake up. She went back to the ICU and checked the condition of her patients once more. She advised the nurses on the dosage to inject medicine for each of them and even prescribed some special pills for some of the younger ones, so that the pains on their bones will subside soon.

Zia closed her eyes and opened them once more. She sat down on the floor out of the ICU and leaned her head back against the wall. Her blue uniform was stained with blood, but she did not care about it. She knew that she had out done herself for the day as she had performed surgeries for six different cases. Zia looked down at her watch. She knew that there had been a part of the crew who were saved, and that there were some who were injured as well. She knew that Vian was also a part of the crew, but ever since the time she had come to know that there had been an air crash, she had not wanted to think in what condition he may be. She had not even taken her phone from out of her bag, but Zia had a feeling that she knew that he was alright. She knew that there will be so many messages and missed calls from him on her phone, but she did not want to look into them at the moment. She had more work to do, and because she had a feeling that he was alright, Zia did not want to face her reality soon, because even though she had not known for herself, there was a small nagging voice inside her mind, telling her that Vian was not ok.

"Stay safe Vian," Zia mumbled, as she closed her eyes. "Stay safe wherever you are." She whispered, more to her heart than for anyone else.

"Doctor, patient number two is having constricts."

The door to the ICU suddenly opened and Zia looked up as she was automatically pulled up to her feet. She hurried towards the patient as the nurse already checked the little girl's condition.

"Move aside," Zia pushed a nurse aside as she hurried closer. She quickly scanned the monitors which were connected to the girl's body, and she saw that the girl's heart beat was going faster and faster.

"What happened at once?" she asked herself as she checked the dose on the IV fluids and took the injection. She looked down at the girl who was shaking horribly and injected the dose into her arm. Zia bit her lips and waited as she stared at the monitor. Her experienced hands were working fast as the girl's breathing returned back to normal and she was able to feel her breathing come back to the normal rate once more.

Zia checked the blood pressure of the girl and turned towards the nurse.

"Check her condition once every half an hour and report it to me immediately." She said as the nurse nodded. She checked on the girl once more and went towards the next patient, whose breathing was not normal yet. The little boy had a large bandage on his head and leg and his face was concentrated on a troubled sleep. Zia looked down at the boy and monitored his pulse and blood pressure. Only after making sure that everything was alright, Zia came back to her office.

Sitting down heavily on her chair, Zia kept her head on the table in front of her. She had a busy day ahead of her and she looked up once more as she heard a knock on the door.

"Come in," she replied as she squeezed some sanitizer into her hands.

"Doctor how is my son, Lucas?" a mother who was looking distressed hurried into Zia's room as she stood up from her seat.

"Ma'am I think you should take some rest." Zia said hurriedly, holding the lady from her shoulders and making her take a seat. She had a large bandage on her head, and she looked as though she was pregnant.

"I have been looking for him ever since I woke up and only now, I knew that he's here in your ward." The mother cried as she said to Zia. Zia nodded understandingly as she sat behind her table once more.

"Oh, I understand." She replied kindly. "Lucas is asleep now. He had a broken ankle and some minor wounds on his body." Zia said. "You don't have to worry about him," she said even though the mother did not look as though she will listen to what Zia says.

"I saw the number of dead people." The mother sobbed as Zia's eyebrows wrinkled in worry. She was able to understand how the mother would have felt not being able to know where her son was and how it would have been when she had just seen the number of casualties on the air crash. She patted her hand gently before looking up at the woman.

"Lucas is a good boy. He cried looking for you, but when I told him that you are on the way, he fell silent. There were a lot of casualties and even a lot of major injuries, but luckily, no child had to undergo any of that." Zia explained, as the mother finally slowed down her tears.

"Can I see him now?" she asked.

Zia looked at her watch. It was half past midnight, but she knew that the mother will not feel at rest if she did not see his son for herself.

"Yes, you may." Zia said. "But please don't wake him up, he is getting some trips." The mother nodded and stood up.

"Did you travel alone with him?" Zia asked before she could stop herself. She saw how tired the mother was looking and she wondered where the father of the baby was.

The mother slowly turned towards Zia when she had reached the door.

"It's only him that I have." She spoke. Zia felt her breath struck on her throat as she saw the tears clouding her eyes. "My husband died three months ago," the mother explained, as she touched her stomach. "Before I got to know about her." she finished tightly and smiled at Zia as she looked sadly at the young mother.

Zia nodded at the mother as she closed the door behind her and went towards the ward. She knew that the nurse would guide her towards her son and that she will be at peace when she finally meets Lucas. Zia sighed as she looked thoughtfully ahead of her. She had met many sorts of people, with different personalities and different backgrounds throughout her life as a doctor. But never even once had she met two people with a similar background. The mother she saw today was also a new experience to her. Zia had always believed in the sort of stories which had a happy ending, but being a doctor for herself she knew that there was no such thing as a happy ending. Her mind drifted towards the young mother once more. She wondered whether she had seen her son and thought how the reunion might have been. In a world full of people, the young mother just had her five year old son and her unborn baby. Zia rubbed her eyes as she wondered whether the world can be cruel than it already was, for the people who deserved to be treated kindly.

*

Zia craned her neck and massaged her forehead as she closed her eyes tight. She pulled her handbag closer towards her and searched her phone through it. Her eyebrows creased as her fingers did not close in on her phone and when it finally did, she pulled it out with a smile on her face.

Zia looked at her reflection on the dark screen. Her fingers braced her bare neck as she remembered the chain she had removed earlier before she had gone into surgery. Zia felt too tiring and thought of wearing the chain later. She had not even met Vian yet and a smile went up her face as she imagined the smile that will go up his handsome face when he sees her wearing the chain, he had given her.

Biting her lips to hide her smile, Zia switched on her phone. She smiled as she saw the photo, she had taken with Vian two days ago during their last holiday. Vian's arm was draped across her shoulder, and he was looking at her with adoring eyes.

"You are so adorable," Zia cooed as her eyes smiled.

But her smile did not last longer.

As soon as the smile went up her eyes, she realized that there were not any notifications on her phone. Her heart started to beat louder as she realized that he will never let go of her without either sending her a message. Zia's hands started to shake in fear. She had not given much thought about him when the aircraft had crashed. Even though she had wanted to be tactful, she had always thought that Vian will be alright. She knew how careful he was, and there had not been much thought of him in danger, on her mind.

Zia's phone fell down from her grip as though it had burnt her fingers. She gasped and she placed her hands over her racing heart as her mind raced towards Vian.

"Where are you Vian? Wherever are you?" she asked herself.

Zia did not know what to do. She did not know where Vian was. She did not know whether he was even still alive. She shook her head closing her eyes tight as soon as that thought crept up to her mind. No, no, it can't be... she prayed for herself, and stood up from her seat, as she felt as though her whole world was crumbling down on to her feet.

Zia knew that she will never be able to concentrate on her work when she kept on worrying about Vian. She did not even know in which hospital he was, if he was in the hospital that is. Zia pulled open her office door and came out fanning herself with her hand, as she felt thoughts which were too troubling her cloud her eyes in fear. She did not want to think what might have happened to Vian, but fear did not let her heart rest peacefully.

Zia shook her head once more. She remembered that she had not eaten anything since lunch that day and concluding that all of her troubling thoughts were creeping up to her mind only because she was in hunger, Zia climbed down to the cafeteria. The cafeteria of the hospital was open all the time, but it was empty except for the dozing cashier in the corner. Zia shook him awoke and ordered two doughnuts and a chocolate milk, before she took a seat in the corner of the cafeteria.

Zia ate thoughtfully as she listened to the deafening silence around her. She always had her meals in the cafeteria, but she loved to have late midnight meals in the cafeteria, when it was only her left alone with her thoughts. She found herself being able to clear her mind and wonder aloud about all of her worries.

It did not take long for Zia to finish her meal. She leaned back on the chair and closed her eyes as her mind drifted off towards Vian once more. She prayed him to call her now, as she suddenly sat up straight on her chair.

Zia hurriedly got back to her feet, for she heard the unmistakable siren of an ambulance speeding towards the hospital in the dead of the night. She wondered who might be injured inside the ambulance and she wondered whether it might be someone from the air crash. Forgetting her empty plate where it was on the table, Zia hurried towards the entrance to the hospital. It was crowded with many doctors and nurses who were all crowded around a stretcher. Zia stood where she was and leaned on her toes, trying to get a look on the person who was on the stretcher. She did not understand why but her heart started to beat louder once more when the nurses pushed the stretcher towards the ICU.

Zia followed the stretcher behind the nurses and from the bits and pieces of what fell onto her ear, she realized that it was another patient from the air crash. The previous hospital the patient was in, did not have the required facilities for the patient when the condition of the patient had worsened.

Zia craned her neck to the side. She turned with the stretcher as they turned towards the corridor to the ICU, and Zia froze where she was. She felt the time stop around her. The world did not turn anymore. Her eyes grew large in her sockets as her eyebrows rose high up on her forehead. Zia's mouth opened in horror and her hands covered it in fear as her eyes fell on the patients hand which fell onto the side of the stretcher.

Zia felt her heart stop its beating. Tears sprang up to her eyes as she saw the blue coat of the arm and Zia finally realized for whom the black watch on the arm belonged to.

"No, no, no, it can't be."

Zia mumbled as though she was in a daze, but she knew that what she saw was not a lie. She found her legs pulling her weight towards the stretcher as she raised her arm up, as though she was trying to hold on to the life that was being pulled away from her. Zia did not have any more life on her feet. The stretcher got pushed inside the ICU and the door banged close behind it, when Zia sank heavily onto her feet, as her whole world crumbled and shattered into pieces in front of her eyes.

"Vian..."

Tears fell down along her cheeks as she finally realized why had not Vian called her back for so long. She had been too preoccupied with her work to give him back a call. She had been waiting in vain for him to come back to her. She had been waiting too long, waiting, waiting, and waiting, thinking that he will come back to her now. Zia sobbed loudly as her shoulders heaved in sadness. She had seen the state of the burnt aircraft. The aircraft had burnt starting from the nose towards the wing compartments. She gritted her teeth in anger as she realized how stupid she had been. She had seen how badly the nose of the aircraft had been burnt. She had also known that the nose was where the cockpit was. And the cockpit was where the pilots were. And that was where Vian was meant to be.

Zia slammed her hand loudly onto her forehead as she remembered how stupid she had been. She had always been slow in processing information, and she hated herself for being so slow. Zia pulled her hair back as her stethoscope fell down from her neck. Her blood stained blue uniform was too heavy on her shoulders. She tried to get back onto her feet and as though the whole world was resting heavily on her shoulders, Zia dragged her feet up and sobbing fearfully, as her heart heaved up and down in immense worry, she pulled herself towards the door of the ICU. Even though she wanted to go inside the ICU and be closer towards him, the doctor inside her, did not let her do so. She pressed her hands onto the door and tried to look at him through the open circle. But she knew that she will never be able to look at him from inside that small opening. Zia cried and sobbed harder, as she turned back and leaned her head onto the door. She rooted down heavily onto the floor, her hand rested on her raised up knee, and her other leg stretched long on the floor.

Zia sobbed harder and harder. She found her breathing turn ragged and she pulled her glasses from over her nose. She closed her eyes and balled up her fist, as she leaned her head back on the door. Her breathing was not turning normal for she knew that the love of her life was fighting and fighting to pull a breath through his lungs.

Tears rooted down along her cheeks. Zia knew that her heart was beating louder and faster for the two of them. She knew that she will never ever be the same if something ever happened to him. She knew that she wanted to be strong for his sake, but she was too weak in her heart. She knew that Vian was going through a hard phase in his life now. She knew what had happened before and what had happened at that moment. But she did not know what will happen to her in the future. She prayed him to open his eyes once more. She wanted him to open his eyes once more.

Zia closed her eyes tight as tears fell down loosely from along her eyelashes. She knew that she wanted him to wake up, for she realized that she had not yet accepted the proposal he had set in store for her.

Wake up Vian... please wake up darling... I am waiting for you... for I love you...
