Chapter 20: Mrs Nightshade?
Okay so first I want to say a huuuggggggggggeeeeeeeeeee sorry that I haven't updated this in alomst two weeks but exams are soon and homework is pilling up and I've had work and just ugh it's getting harder and harder to update but once the next holidays swing around (which should be in about two months) I will then be able to update often. Like recently in class if we're in a computer lab I've been typing up chapters instead of working which I now need to catch up on so horray but seriously, I love updating. I don't just write these stories for fun I write them for you guys because so many of you have stuck by me for so long now and I want to just say a big thank you for that.
Oh and I want to apologize in advance for the crappy chapter, it's not written too well so I may go back and fix it later (may).
Please enjoy the chapter and that's all for now, Bye! :) xxx
“B-But you can’t be…. Sir?” asks a baffled Steve and I fight to hold back the giggle forming its way up my throat. “How? Why?” asks Barton, face paling more and more by the second.
“How? Because I can. Why? Because I want to. Who do you think helped her off the radar all those years? How do you think the lights mysteriously vanished off just when they wanted to? I had to allow Ally in otherwise it would take her hours to hack our systems. Oh, and how do you think she knew what was happening and everything about us? Granted, I of course restricted access to a few areas but she hacked them anyway, quite quickly might I add. Ally always had eyes on the SHIELD agents through the cameras and Nightshade always knew when and where attacks and mission would be. Ever wondered how you escaped Budapest Agent Barton and Agent Romanoff?”
Tasha’s face goes a ghostly white, Barton’s eyes flickering as if he’s going to faint. “You mean… the mystery sniper…..” starts Tasha, not being able to form proper sentences. “Me,” I say, smirking at my own accomplishments. I can’t believe I’ve lasted this long, without anyone, ANYONE suspecting. Even the great Black Widow, the best assassin at breaking and figuring out plans from a single guy’s sentence. She’s amazing at piecing things together, answering riddles and things of the sort. That, is how well Fury, Ally and I are covering our tracks.
“But Director, if she works for SHIELD, why send them after her?” asks Reed, still trying to figure out the big picture of all this. “I wasn’t planning on, however, a few years back I slipped up and one of our agents picked her up on the radar. I couldn’t blow my cover, so I sent in a few agents and they obviously came back unsuccessful. Agent Romanoff heard of this and asked to be put on her case, wanting to bring her in. She wouldn’t stop until Miss Nightshade was caught so I just tried to keep her off radar as most as possible,”
“That must have been hard, considering I wouldn’t stop searching for her myself,” mumbles Tasha, now seated in a recliner chair with a single hand running through her hair. This must have been a giant blow to the gut to her, after countless years of searching for me, to bring me in under Fury’s order and now to be told this. Sucks to be her, and I kind of feel a pang of sympathy for her, even after everything we’ve been through I do feel sorry for her.
“So… she’s an ally (not Ally, ally as in friend) of SHIELD?” asks Ben. Nick’s – Fury’s – mouth twitches upward, kind of like a smile, an amused grin then corrects “Agent of SHIELD actually,” I think I could hear the gears grinding inside each and every one of their heads at the moment it fell that silent.
“She’s… what?” asks Stark, quite shocked himself. One point for team Nick and Lillian! We just surprised Mr egotistical and knows-everything-that-you-don’t. You may know him as Tony Stark. “Yeah just like her mum,” says Ally, a mouth full of chips. Where did she get chips from?
“Her mum?” asks Susan. “Yes, her mother Miss Storm. Her mother – Chelsea – was one of SHIELD’s best ever, and now, her daughter is following in her footsteps,” says Nick. “So… what level agent is she?” asks Barton, colour slowly flooding back to his face. “She’s a level 10,” answers Nick. You know how I said Barton’s face had colour coming back to it? Well now it’s drained again.
“Level 10?” asks a completely astounded Steve. Aww he’s adorable when he’s confused. STOP IT LILLIAN. “Yes Captain level 10, that’s as high as me,” answers Nick, this time letting the pleased and amused smile conquer his face.
“When did all this happen?” asks Johnny, his small mind evidently finally adapting and taking in the new information. “When I turned 9,” I answer, stealing a few salt and vinegar chips from Ally and popping them in my mouth. I may love them, but I always cringe at the first chip that I eat. “So… she’s our superior?” asks Tasha, hiding her emotions behind her poker face now. “Technically yeah so my first order as your superior is to throw the lot of you in a prison cell because honestly, that place gives you back cramps,” I joke, but being serious about the back cramps. They freaking hurt.
Tin man scoffs, replying “Yeah ah no, no one is my superior,” I swear, I’m running out of ego jokes for this guy. I mean seriously, his ego is the size of….. Saturn? I don’t know! Like I said, I’m running out of ego jokes! Don’t judge me. “So your mum was an agent?” asks Steve, turning his attention back to me. His eyes look so blue in this light, like the sky on a cloudless summer day. Okay there have been way too many chick flick moments occurring in my life recently. I need a holiday, away from Steve, away from the Avengers, away from the Fantastic Four and away from everyone but Ally. Yeah, that sounds nice.
“Yep, the best there was. She was one of the founders of SHIELD and picked up strange activity in New Mexico a long time ago so she checked it out by herself, the only other person that knew was Nick. Nick was her back up, in case anything happened. So, she went in, found some weird Norse mythology stuff then just as she was about to go out, she met him,” I answer, playing with a strand of my hair. It looks lighter than I remember.
“Loki?” asks Bruce and I nod, my attention still glued to my hair yet I elaborate “He was looking for his golden helmet, it apparently fell off the bifrost when he was having a practicing duel with his brother,” Thor’s laugh echoes off the walls, that goofy puppy dog grin spreading further across his face. “Aye, I remember that. He fell straight onto his Asguardian behind,” Thor says, sounding quite proud. I giggle in return, the rest of the room falling into quiet chuckles of laughter. After a moment, I decide to continue.
“That was the object that my mum picked up on, his helmet. So she had it in hand, about to report to base but Loki appeared out of nowhere, threatening to kill her if she didn’t give him his helmet back,”
“Rock of Ages was always good at making first impressions,” Stark inputs, standing there with his arm crossed and his signature smirk planted across his face. Ignoring his comment, I say “She said no, quite feistily might I add which caught him off guard. He questioned her, asking her why she dare defy a God and she replied ‘Because this certain God happens to be an ass’ which also caught him off guard,”
“I like your mum, I can see where you got your feistiness from,” Johnny says, winking at me and biting his lip seductively. He’s never going to stop. “Anyway, he was fascinated by my mother, liked the fact that she dared to argue with him, to challenge him. So the next words that came out of his mouth caught my mother by surprise this time. He asked if she would like to have dinner with him, on Asguard. My mum was shocked, not knowing if this guy was a lunatic or really a God so she did the logical thing and said yes. That is how I believe Thor met my mum, because she attended a family dinner with Loki so Odin, Frigga and Thor were there.
“She came back later, thanking him for the dinner and he of course said any time. So after that one night, they really hit off. Nick didn’t know about this for a couple years, he just thought that there was a bug in the system that made it appear something was picked up in New Mexico because that’s what my mum told him. However, Nick is smarter than he looks. He asked my mum what was going on, what or who was distracting her from work. My mum, not being able to lie to her best friend anymore, admitted the fact she was dating a God, Loki to be exact.
“He didn’t believe her at first, who in their right mind would? So she had to prove it. Loki gave her a golden bracelet, all she had to do was rub it three times and he would come to her through the bifrost. Once he did, Nick was mind set on making him a possible ally. He accepted, only because of my mother. All in all, everyone was happy. My mother and fathe—Loki were happy in love, Nick was happy with his secret new and powerful ally which once again, only he and my mum knew about. Things were looking up, but there’s always something that must come along and ruin everything. That something, being me.
“My mum became pregnant with me and she was terrified about how Loki would react, would he be happy or would he leave my mum? Possibly try to kill the baby? Luckily for my mother, he was ecstatic. The problem didn’t start there though, the problem started when I was actually born. As you know, my other died in childbirth and Loki was so grief-stricken that he didn’t even want me anymore, he dropped me at the steps to an orphanage and left, telling Nick that the alliance was now over. Nick threatened to kill me, saying that if he left and became a possible threat that he would kill me, his own daughter. Loki shrugged it off as if it was nothing, he didn’t care about me then and he sure as hell doesn’t care about me now.
“So he left. Loki, my blood father left. Nick stayed true to his word, hunted me down and snuck into my nursery at the orphanage all by himself, considering that no one else at SHIELD knew anyway,”
“What happened then? I mean, it’s pretty obvious you’re not dead,” Johnny states, smiling at himself.
“Nice detective skills Sherlock, no, I’m not dead. As soon as he got in and glanced down at my petite and innocent face, he stopped,”
“Why?” asks Reed, earning a light slap in the shoulder by Susan. “Because she was a baby! No one that’s heartless,” nags Susan, gazing at me and adding on “Please, continue,”
“To be honest, he never told me why,” I answer, thanking Susan for hitting Reed but looking at Nick for an explanation.
“Because you looked too much like your mother, and you still do,” Nick answers, grinning at me and strolling over, placing a fatherly arm around me. God he’s more of a father to me than Loki ever was. “What happened next?” asks Thor, quite intrigued with the story.
“Well, he left. He stayed in touch, making anonymous donations to the orphanage every once in a while because no matter how hard he tried, he could never forget about me. He loved my mother, she never saw it but he always loved her. So, he thought seeing as he could never be with her, that he could at least care for her child as if I was his own and he has been doing that, for years now. He’s gotten me out of so many situations, as well as Ally. Without the two of them, I would have died long ago,”
“You mentioned giant blue creatures came and attacked you in the orphanage and you encountered them quite a few times afterwards, do you know what they are?” asks Steve, his pupils large and his large masculine body close to mine. In fact, I just realised that we’re still holding hands.
“I do,” I answer. His eyebrow rises, waiting for an actual answer. “Frost giants, controlled by Loki,” My chest shakes when I speak the words, each word that falls from my lips making my chest feel light and lighter. “Why would they try to kill you then? Surely no one is that heartless,” asks Susan but Stark chuckles at that, glancing at her and saying “Have you met Reindeer Games?”
“They weren’t trying to kill me,” I intervene, not wanting to hear Stark’s snarky comments. I’m too tired. “They were trying to abduct me, for Loki,” I clarify. “What? So he had a change of heart?” asks Ben.
“Well evidently not because a few years later he tried taking over the damn planet,” says Barton, sliding further back into the sofa and rubbing his face tiredly. “I don’t know why he wants me now, I just know he does, or did. I haven’t seen a Frost Giant in three years now,” I say, rubbing my thumb over Steve’s palm in circular motions.
“This… is a lot to take in,” says Bruce slowly, leaning against the nearest wall on the left as Nick slowly walks away from me, near Stark. “Brilliant acting though, even I didn’t see past your façade so bravo Shady,” says Iron buns, giving me a quick clap then taking two long strides over to Nick and whispering something in his ear. What is he up to? Knowing Stark he’s probably asking for a top secret playboy magazine that was too explicit to be released.
“Well I had to practically wire it into my brain to be SHIELD’s enemy. I even thought about killing you guys, hated you as a matter of fact. I was so deep into character I almost became the character,” I say, smirking at the memories. They were fun days, I have to admit it.
“So what now? We have HYDRA and possible Frost Giants on our asses,” announces Johnny, kicking his feet up on the table. “Now, we sleep. Get our energy up,” answers Nick, glancing at me with his one eye. “That is the best thing that anyone has said all day,” says ally, springing up from her chair and running to her bedroom. “She’s awfully spry for someone who almost fell asleep throughout that story,” says Ben, gazing down the corridor where she vanished. “If you say the words food, sleep or TV and you practically have her in the palm of your hand,” I say, laughing at Ally quietly.
“Rest up now okay? I’ll see you tomorrow,” says Steve, giving my right hand a light kiss and getting up, strolling to the elevator and walking in. He’s so handsome and kind and gentlemen like and – STOP. He’s the enemy Lillian, you can’t –…… But wait…. He isn’t, not anymore. I’m not falling for an enemy, I’m falling for a friend
