->Chapter Three<-
There were now dozens of assorted cans stacked up against the right wall of the bunker. Next to those were about double the amount of water bottles. Ryft and Silver had taken to organizing the food cans by types of food and size. Raven had taken to sorting the water bottles by size. Fang and Atlas were counting and making charts with a notebook and pencil they'd found in the back of a cabinet. They had ripped out pages of previous writings of food tallies.
Of course, the teens didn't have to do this, but it had been about seven days and they were all very bored to say the least. The life-saving bunker had started to feel like a prison cell.
"Okay." Ryft abruptly sat back from her work, making Silver, who was next to her, jump a little. "Why was a small town in Iowa bombed? Seriously, nobody lives here."
"Yeah, and secondly, why do we have sophisticated warning systems and designated fallout shelters?" Raven added, not looking back from her work. "Kinda weird."
"Almost too coincidental..." Fang muttered, drawing a couple of lines on his paper.
"Coincidence?!" Atlas shouted, looking at Silver.
"I think not!" Silver answered and the two went into a giggling fit.
"This is serious, guys." Ryft looked troubled. The shelter had been progressively driving her nuts over the days the teens had been there.
"I think tomorrow's eating day." Raven said, changing the subject. She didn't want to provoke Ryft, as she knew how people could be when they lost sanity.
"Woah, our second time eating in a whole three days!" Ryft shot back sarcastically.
"Ryft..." Fang looked up from his notebook. "Calm down."
"Excuse me?! Calm down?!" Ryft looked officially angry. "We've been stuck in a small bunker for over a week. My phone is dead, the cement is cold, and we have no contact with the outside world." She stood up from her kneeling position, and Silver began slowly inching backwards towards Raven.
"And you're telling me..." Ryft was now nose-to-nose with Fang, her eyes wild. "To calm down?!"
Atlas had backed towards Raven as well, as if to say to Fang, 'you got yourself into this.' Raven looked thoughtful though nervous, as though she was analyzing the situation though ready to jump in if needed.
"Yes." Fang replied evenly. He wasn't trying to provoke Ryft, he just didn't understand what the problem was.
To everyone's surprise, Ryft took a swing at Fang.
Fang stumbled backwards, his left hand on his cheek and his jaw slack with shock.
Raven leaped practically right over Silver, who was crouching, and grabbed Ryft's wrists from behind her. Ryft looked enraged as she struggled against Raven. Raven managed to get Ryft's arms behind her back and shove her against the wall.
"Let go!" Ryft howled, struggling. "Let go of me! Let me at him!"
Fang was nearer to to Silver and Atlas now, his eyes wide. His cheek was red where Ryft had nailed him.
If the situation weren't as serious, Atlas would have yelled something like 'cat fight!' And Silver would have backed her up. Fang and Ryft would have rolled their eyes, and Raven would've snorted.
But they were all stuck in a fallout shelter with an insane, aggressive Ryft.
Silver stood and ran over to Ryft, who was now trying to claw, unsuccessfully, at Raven's hands.
"It's okay, Ryft." She said softly, walking closer to her friend. "We have each other, right?"
Ryft's struggles lessened slightly, though progressed.
"And look at all of the food we have." Silver continued, smiling. "And all of the water. Nobody's sick or hurt."
Ryft relaxed slightly against Raven's grip. There was just something about Silver that was naturally calming. She had soft eyes and a quiet voice. She cared greatly for everyone and everything unconditionally.
Raven reluctantly let go of Ryft and backed away, though stayed close enough to grab her again in case she tried to attack Silver.
"It's okay to not be calm, in fact, it's understandable." Silver continued. "Were all having a hard time down here, but you just need to hear this most."
Silver stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Ryft, bringing her into a hug.
"Everything will be okay."
Ryft slowly returned the hug, tears beginning to fall from her eyes.
When the two pulled away, Ryft turned and went to the edge of the wall, curling up there, unmoving.
"Let's leave her alone for now." Silver said, going back to Fang and Atlas.
"We should all get some sleep." Raven suggested, walking to the card table. "We should- AH!"
She tripped on a stack of blankets, sending them scattering across the floor. She landed hard next to the table and sat up immediately, embarrassed she'd ruined the moment.
"Hey, look!" Atlas pointed to where the blanket stack once was.
There was a small handle in the floor.
Raven flipped over and pulled on the handle, opening a door the size of a textbook on the floor.
Inside, there were a few fuel tanks for the generator, some batteries, and..
"A radio!" Raven shouted with delight.
