Chapter 13. Aptitude Testing
Scott, Stiles and myself were all seated around the wads of cash on the floor. Inside the bag we had found a cassette tape that had the words Play Me written on it. After Scott dug out his old radio from his closet, which was no easy task due to the clutter, we contemplated on playing the tape.
"You think it's from the Benefactor?" my brother asked as he glanced between Stiles and myself.
I rolled my eyes, "I know it's from the Benefactor. Why else would it be with the money from the Benefactor if it wasn't?"
"She's right," Stiles agreed, "that's definitely from the Benefactor."
Scott swallowed thickly as he popped the cassette into place and hit the play button. The sound of the rain hitting the window was the only thing apparent before the tape began to reveal what was on it. There was a crackling sound and a little bit of static before a male voice came over the speakers, "After entering the IP address, you will be connected through a Darknet portal to an untraceable bank. Once logged in, enter your account numbers to receive wire transfers. The IP address will deactivate with each transfer. You will be assigned a new IP address if you choose to continue down the list. Remember, visual confirmation is always required for payment."
The room fell silent as we took in in the new information. Somehow these assassins get a number and use it as a sort of username and password in order to get the money. They have to take a photo of the creature they killed and send it with the information in order to get paid. Whomever the Benefactor is, they're definitely up to speed with modern technology if they are able to create this many new IP addresses and and deactivate the old ones.
"You ever made a wire transfer?" Stiles asked the two of us in confusion.
My brother shook his head from side to side, "Never had enough money."
"So you didn't understand a word of that either?" he continued, making sure we were on the same page in regards to the whole money situation.
I'm not exactly sure what a wire transfer is or how it works, but I know that it's for large amounts of money and usually the bad guys use it in movies when they rob people. Normally, things are wired to offshore accounts so they can't be traced, but apparently here it's being wired somewhere else.
"I don't understand any of this. Why would someone use all of this money just to kill us?" Scott inquired as he gestured to the cash.
I groaned, "Exactly. Most of the people on this list lay low and don't hurt people."
"Somebody wants you two dead. Badly." Stiles stated evenly.
He was right. Somebody does want the two of us dead. I mean, they're willing to pay someone 35 million dollars for me alone. Scott's worth 25 million. Together, we are worth 60 million dollars. That's enough for 100 people to live the rest of their lives on without a care in the world.
As if the words sent a panic through Scott, he snatched up the money and began shoving it back into the duffle bag. Stiles held his hands up to stop him, "Whoa whoa, what are you doing?"
"It's late. We've got the PSAT's in the morning." he responded as he continued to shove the money in the bag.
Stiles shook his head from side to side, "No, I meant the money. $500,000. You know how much money that is?"
My brother glanced at his best friend as if he was asking him a trick question, "It's 500--"
"It's half a million dollars, Scott. What are you going to do with it? Are you just gonna slide it under your mattress?" Stiles asked as he gave my brother a dumbfounded look.
Scott glanced at me before looking at Stiles, and I knew what the look he was giving me meant. He was telling me that I needed to have his back because he could sense that Stiles was about to suggest to do something else with the money. Something that Scott obviously didn't feel comfortable doing.
"I have to talk to Derek. The money's his." he answered slowly.
Stiles narrowed his eyes, "You mean his and Peter's."
"What is that supposed to mean?" I asked him slowly, not liking the direction this conversation was about to take.
He glanced at me, "It means maybe we should proceed with caution."
"You don't think we need to tell Derek?" I asked in confusion.
Stiles stood up and ran his hands through his hair, "No. No. No, of course we have to tell him... I'm just... I'm just saying some of that money is Peter's right?"
I nodded without saying a word and Scott uttered a simple yeah in response.
"Right? Peter. Homicidal killer? Remember? You want to give $500,000 to him." he stated as he looked at my brother.
In moments like these, I wish Scott wasn't so innocent. He had no idea what Stiles was hinting at now, and he was just confused because all he wanted to do was give Derek back his money because he didn't feel right stealing it. "So, you're saying we should give Derek back his money, but not Peter?" he asked timidly.
"No, that's not what I'm saying." Stiles responded as he let out a sigh.
I let out a groan, "Stiles, what the hell are you saying?"
The sound of someone running up the stairs cut the conversation short and Scott and I shoved the money and radio under his bed. We all jumped in front of the bed, hiding the evidence as we waited for the door to open. I let out a quiet sigh of relief when Malia popped through the doorway. She was dripping water all over the floor and her hair was a hot mess due to the rain and her moving it around.
"We found Satomi's pack. Derek and I. But they're dead." she said.
My eyes widened, "All of them?"
"All of the ones we could find." she stated.
Stiles scrunched his face up in confusion, "Okay, then where's Derek?"
"He took this girl to the hospital. He said her name was Braeden." Malia said with a shrug.
Again, my eyes widened, "Wait-- Braeden is here? In Beacon Hills?"
"Apparently."

The chatter from the student body of Beacon Hills was echoing around the halls as we stood in line waiting to enter the classroom where we would take our PSAT's. I wasn't all that concerned really, before all of the supernatural crap infiltrated my life, I was a great student and had been in advanced classes so I had been learning the stuff that Scott and Stiles are learning now back then. I'm certainly not like Lydia, but I'm definitely academically ahead of where everyone else in our group is.
"Where's Lydia?" Kira asked as she glanced around in confusion.
Our group currently consisted of my brother, my boyfriend, Malia, Kira and myself. Our local genius already took her PSAT's, so she didn't have to be here today. I had the opportunity to take them Freshman year as well, but I opted out and decided to wait. That way I would have more time to study for them, it's funny how I haven't studied at all for them.
"She took it her Freshman year," Stiles responded as he leaned up against the lockers.
Malia's eyes widened, "Does that mean I could have taken it some other time?"
"Malia, you studied harder for this than any of us." Scott stated, trying to calm her nerves.
He was right, Malia had been the one to hit the books and take as many notes as she could. She was already behind due to her being a coyote, and she was taking that seriously. Malia didn't want to receive special treatment or be left out, so she was trying really hard to get to the level that we all are at.
"Doesn't mean I'm gonna do good." she retorted as she rolled her eyes.
"Well..." Stiles interjected awkwardly.
Malia glanced at him, "Well, what?"
"It's do well, not good." he stated slowly, not sure if he had pushed a button.
She glanced at the ceiling and threw her arms down in a tantrum, "God!"
"Hey, you're doing this. Because even though we have people trying to kill us, we still have to live our lives. I mean hell, if I can live through graduation I'd like to get into a really good college, wouldn't you? We can do this." I said in attempts to calm her down.
Kira nodded, "It's only three hours. We can survive three hours."
The line continued to move and we were now in the classroom. In the front there was a desk where the booklets were being kept. We had to take a fingerprint and put it on the booklet, and then put our cell phones into an envelope to ensure we would receive no contact from outside of this room. Lydia's mom was in here and so was the chemistry teacher that had replaced Harris. His name was Simon.
Believe it or not, I actually liked Harris better.
Once we were all seated with our booklets and pencils, I glanced around the room. Kira, Stiles, Scott, and Malia were the only people I had recognized. To be fair, I haven't really had much time to socialize with anyone other than them this past year though. Not that I would want to, people annoy me.
"Please do not open the test booklet until you are instructed to do so. This test is two hours and ten minutes. There will be two 25 minute critical reading sections, two 25 minute math sections and an essay writing portion that will last 30 minutes. There are supposed to be two teachers monitoring this exam." Simon said as he glanced at Ms. Martin.
She nodded as she glanced at him awkwardly, "I know, the other is Coach. He's not exactly punctual. Um, let me just try him again."
I watched as she exited the room with her cell phone. Simon nodded and then proceeded to look back to us. His eyes seemed to linger around Scott and myself, and I glanced at Stiles in hopes that he was paying attention. He wasn't. I sighed and prepared myself to lob a pencil at his head to get his attention but Lydia's mom walked back into the room.
"I can't reach him, but Mr. Yukimura is upstairs grading papers. Do you want me to try him?" she asked as she shrugged her shoulders, not really knowing what else to do with herself.
Simon narrowed his eyes, "We have to start. We can ask for his assistance during the first break," his eyes then moved to a small wristwatch that was laying on the desk, "you may now open your test booklets and begin."

It was probably ten minutes into the test when I had reached the first question that I had to truly think about the answer. I was never good at math, and of course that was the section we started with. I let out a sigh and ran my hands through my hair and laid my pencil down, trying to remember the quadratic formula.
A thud from behind me drew my attention away from the task at hand and I turned to see that Sydney, a girl in my History class, had collapsed onto the floor. My eyes widened as Lydia's mom rushed over to her in a panic, "Sydney!"
Sydney pushed herself up with the help of Ms. Martin and chuckled awkwardly. Lydia's mom blinked rapidly as Sydney stood up, "Are you alright?"
"I'm okay. I just got kind of dizzy." she explained as he eyes darted around the room nervously. The poor girl was probably embarrassed beyond belief.
Lydia's mom took a hold of Sydney's hand and inspected it, "Sydney, how long have you had this?"
I couldn't exactly see what she was referring to, due to the fact that I was seated and they were standing, but it looked like her skin on her wrist was red. Stiles looked to me and asked what they were looking at silently, I just shrugged in response.
"Ms. Martin, do I need to stop the test?" Simon asked in a tone that didn't seem all that interested in the topic at hand.
She shook her head from side to side as Sydney say down and covered her wrist with her free hand. Lydia's mom briskly walked to the front of the classroom and addressed the group, "Everybody stay in your seats. I'll um, be back in a minute." she then snatched her cell phone and exited the room once again.
Now everyone was looking at Sydney, and she was keeping her gaze on her desk. I slowly turned around and caught sight of her wrist. The spots where her veins were looked red and purple and it was about 1/4 of the way down her forearm. What the hell is that? Scott was looking at me and I was about to tell him that it didn't look good and then we heard Lydia's mom screaming in the hallway.
Without thinking everyone jumped up and ran out of the classroom. Ms. Martin was at the other end, with her back pressed against the door to the outside. She let out a breath and pointed to the classroom, "Everyone back to your seats. Now."
"What the hell is going on?" I muttered as I sulked back into the classroom. I didn't think twice about using my enhanced hearing to eavesdrop on what she was about to say on the phone. I took a deep breath and then focussed on what Mrs. Martin was saying.
"I need the number for the CDC. Yes, the Center for Disease Control."

I thought I had seen some scary things in my life. The first time I witnessed a dead body, being attacked by an Alpha werewolf, being attacked by a giant lizard, being attacked by yet another Alpha, being attacked by Japanese spirits, being possessed by an evil spirit, hell seeing a man without a mouth was pretty scary... but seeing my school being quarantined definitely takes the cake.
On the outside of the building they were putting plastic over the windows, they had a tunnel from the outside through the hallway, the classroom had a bunch of small tents with cots set up for the sick kids to get inside of, there was a huge team of people in yellow hazard suits, and we were all trapped inside. Scott was following Mrs. Martin around asking for details and such, I was huddled around a cluster of desks with Stiles, Kira and Malia.
"Bet they're thinking smallpox." Stiles stated.
Simon, whom had been eavesdropping, decided to interject himself into our conversation, "Not likely. Smallpox was eradicated worldwide in 1979. We've only managed to eradicate two viruses in history. The other was rinderpest. It killed cows."
"So we should be comforted by that, right?" my boyfriend asked sarcastically.
Simon shrugged, "Unless it's something worse."
"Whatever it is, they're taking it pretty seriously. I can hear police radios out there, and there's a lot of cars. I can hear your dad too." I said to Stiles.
He nodded, "Right. I should probably call him."
"Don't bother," Simon said as he stopped Stiles from digging through the cell phone envelopes, "They would have shut off any access to outside communication by now. No cell service. No WiFi. No starting a panic. Looks like we're all just going to wait here and see what happens."

I would say that I have a decent pain tolerance. I live with hardcore migraines on a daily basis. I've been stabbed, bitten by a werewolf (twice) and poisoned more than once. Since becoming an Admonere, I haven't gotten sick. I guess the whole supernatural ability to heal thing has strengthened my immune system. I almost forgot what it felt like to have a fever or to be sick to my stomach... that is until five minutes ago when I began to feel all of those things and more.
Simon was still seated behind the desk as I excused myself to use the restroom, but I didn't have to go to the bathroom. I needed to get out of the classroom because my eyes were burning and I was beginning to become familiar with what follows that sensation.
I stumbled into the ladies room and nearly collapsed onto the sink. I gripped the sides of the slightly dirty porcelain and gazed at my reflection. Little beads of sweat were lining my forehead and my eyes were glowing bright purple. I nearly stumbled back at the sight, this was the first time I had actually seen my eyes. My heart nearly stopped as I finally came to terms with the fact that I was a hybrid. I've never seen anything remotely similar to the color of my eyes. I've seen red, blue and yellow but that's it. My eyes are purple; a mix of blue and red.
I don't want to consider the reason as to why my eyes are a mix of the color of a true alpha and someone who took the life of an innocent.
Without thinking, I spun around and put my back to the mirror. Why is this happening? It's not the full moon and I'm not trying to shift right now. It's happening on it's own, which makes no sense. From everything that I've witnessed and from what Scott has told me, usually you can control it in a sense... but I'm trying to keep it hidden, but I can't. My gums felt like they were ripping open and I knew that my teeth were changing.
I don't want to see myself as a werewolf, I really don't need that image in my head. I don't know what to do, I can't go back to the classroom looking like this.
My heart was picking up pace because I was getting nervous. Okay, I can do this I just need to think of something to conceal this. Or... maybe, just maybe I can connect to someone and contact them. When we were in Mexico, and I connected to Scott I was seeing everything through his eyes ... like I was him. What if I could connect to someone's mind and speak to them? I know that's a long shot, but maybe it could work. I haven't tried to do it before, and maybe with this whole hybrid thing I have going on, it will give me more strength to do it.
I squeezed my eyes shut and concentrated on Stiles. My right hand gripped the charm of the anchor necklace he had given me and I willed myself to connect to him. The room felt like it was spinning and I nearly stumbled forward as I was hit with a wave of nausea. I have no clue what's wrong with me, but it's affecting my concentration. Maybe I need to sit down? I was sitting down in Mexico maybe it's easier that way. I stepped over to the wall and slid down to the floor, pulling my knees to my chest and pressing my forehead to the top of my knees.
Let's try this for a second time. Once again, I squeezed my eyes shut and thought of Stiles. The room was spinning again and I swallowed thickly before I felt like my head was about to explode. I could hear voices, and I quickly recognized all of them.
Kira's dad was speaking, but I couldn't understand what he was saying. It sounded like I was underneath water. I opened my eyes and it was foggy, like I was looking through a window with condensation all over it. I blinked rapidly and and tried to figure out where they were. Why are they all together? Where are they even at? When I left the classroom, Stiles and Malia and Kira were all still there.
This was different than when I connected to Scott... I wasn't foggy then. I could hear and see everything perfectly fine. Maybe it's because Stiles isn't a supernatural creature? Or, it could be because there's something wrong with me and I'm assuming whatever it is, Scott is going through it too. From what I can make out through the fog, it looks like everyone is crowded around him. Shocker, the twins are the damsel's in distress yet again.
I started repeating the words Stiles help me in my mind. I figured he would hear it if I concentrated hard enough and continued to repeat it over and over again. Suddenly, Stiles' body turned around and I nearly cheered when I realized that he had heard my voice. The room fell silent and I assumed it was because he had told them to stop talking.
I don't know what's wrong with me, but I think I'm transitioning. As I attempted to get the message to him, I realized that I wasn't seeing anything through his eyes, which meant that I wasn't connected to him, I was connected to someone else. I had seen Scott before, so it wasn't him... oh my God.
Malia.
I had connected myself to Malia. How the hell did I manage to get inside of Malia, but speak to Stiles? I have no idea what is happening. I usually have a better handle on my ability than this, but everything is all out of whack and I don't know how to get it back.
"Kasey? Where are you at baby? I can hear you, tell me where you are." Stiles said, and I had heard him clear as day... like he was right beside me.
Oh my God, he was thinking this. I can hear his thoughts.
The girls restroom by the Chemistry room, I responded... praying that he had heard me. This was completely new and I have never done this before so I wasn't sure of how well it would work. It seemed to be going pretty well so far, so let's pray it continues to do so.
"Okay, don't move. I'm coming to get you." he said and then through Malia's eyes I saw him exit the group.
My eyes shot open and I started coughing as I cut the connection. I could feel bile rising up the back of my throat and I darted to the sink and began to dry heave, nothing was coming up as my ribs contracted around my lungs and heart. I was coughing yet again and when I glanced down at the sink, I saw blood spattered against the drain and the sides of the sink. What the hell is wrong with me?
I threw on the tap and washed out the sink and swished some water around my mouth, getting the remaining amount of blood out. I let out a sigh and glanced at my reflection, and I was back to normal. My eyes were brown and I looked like my regular self, apart from the fact that my face was flushed and my hair was a tousled mess. How is that even possible?
The door flew open and I jumped away from the sink in a panic. Stiles entered the room slowly and closed the door behind him. He looked me up and down in confusion, "How did you..?"
"I have no idea." I responded, knowing exactly what he was asking me about.
He blinked once before letting out a sigh, "You okay?"
"I am now, yeah. What the hell is going on?" I asked as I stepped towards him.
Stiles wrapped his arms around me and squeezed me tightly, "We don't really know. Scott and Malia are stuck in transition and Kira shocked a doctor when they were trying to take a blood sample."
"So whatever this is, it's affecting the supernatural?" I inquired as I glanced at him.
He shrugged, "It's affecting everyone... but it's hitting you guys harder, whatever it is."
"Well that's just great."
___________________________________________________________________________
hey guys! how're you doing?!
i'm writing these ahead of time and stacking up some updates. as i'm writing this chapter, i'm battling a cold so yay, lol. my voice is starting to get all gross because i'm coughing so much so i have that to look forward to this week. i'm starting to enjoy season four slightly more now that i have decided to write mostly about kasey and her ability, rather than the show's storyline. don't get me wrong, i'm going to continue to do that as well, but it's more enjoyable for me to go off script and write about kasey because i wasn't the biggest fan of this season.
everyone says the kanima season was irrelevant but honestly i liked it as much as i liked season four. idk why it drags so much to me, but it just does.
anyway, i hope you're having a great day and you're all doing okay! be sure to fan, vote and tell me what you thought in the comments. i love reading what you guys thought of the chapter so don't be shy! Dasey bomb is dropped next chapter, so woo. No goal for this chapter because I haven't finished the next one yet lol xxx
