Chapter 10 - Grandpa Time
Waking up from your slumber, you had the greatest headache yet however the more alarming fact was that you were currently lying on a bed.
Gulping, you took a look around. You knew very well where you were. On a Navy ship. When you tried to open the door of this small room, you learned the fact that you were locked inside. You decided not to panic over this. This might as well be Garp doing all of this. He was helping you.
Putting a hand on your forehead, you closed your eyes as you analyzed very carefully what you've done these past three months of having amnesia. You were relieved to realize that you hadn't done or met anyone that could spread the news of your pregnancy. Of course, now you had real confirmation that that Atsuko is in fact, your mother.
You weren't sure what you should do right now. Ace was gone and you had no time to grieve. You had a very big responsibility and that was to protect and raise your child. Of course, the safest thing you can do right now is to go to East Blue and lay low for a while but remembering the fact that you still had your other family in danger made you over think the options you had.
Biting your lip, you let out a deep breath and then opened your eyes. Going to the war was a bad idea and now Pops and Ace are gone. The one thing you regret the most was the fact that Ace died without finding out he's going to become a dad. Other than that you don't regret a thing. You will cherish the moments you had with him all your life. Because now, even the bad moments with him seemed beautiful to you.
Not realizing you were now crying, you were surprised to feel a tear drop on your hand. You sat down on your bed and held your head in your hands. When you heard a knock on your door, you quickly wimped away your tears.
The door opened and you were greeted by Garp. "How are you feeling?" He asked kindly. "I felt better." You replied. He gave you an empathetic smile and sat down next to you on the bed. The two of you stood in silence whereas you stared in blank.
"You probably figured it out, but we're on my ship now. We're going to the most trustworthy and safest place I can think of." Garp broke the silence. "Where?" You asked. "All the way to East Blue, to Goa Kingdom." He answered. "Foosha Village?" He nod and looked at you confused. "Yeah. I'm guessing you know that place?"
"I was actually sailing to that place beforehand. But now that I give it a thought, isn't that the place were Luffy and Ace grew up?" You asked. "Oh, you remember? But yeah, that's where they grew up." You nod to his question. "Yeah, I remember everything now. But what I want to know right now is how Ace and Pops died. How could the others just let it happen?" You asked as you clenched your shirt.
Garp hesitated for a second. Will you hate him after telling you this? After all, he was there; it happened right in front of his eyes. You were one of the few family members he had left.
"Luffy managed to get to Ace in time. He released him from his cuffs and ran off. Whitebeard decided to stay. He realized that if he ran away too, his crew will be endangered and they might not make it out of there. He decided to sacrifice himself in order to let his crew escape the war safely." Garp started to explain. You furrowed your brows as you listened to the story.
"Pops..." You mumbled. "However, his sacrifice wasn't enough. It's hard to take away a man's pride and so Ace, when he heard Akainu talking bad about Whitebeard, he stopped running away and confronted him." Garp closed his eyes. As soon as you heard the name of the killer, you stood up. "Akainu?! You mean my biological father, Akainu, killed Ace?!" You yelled.
"As they were fighting, Luffy was weakened from his previous fights. He caught Luffy off guard and thought that that was his chance to kill a future threat." Garp didn't had to tell you any more. You already realized what happened next. Both brothers being weakened, the older one jumped in front of the youngest to protect him. The hit was deadly.
Closing your eyes, you took a deep breath. "He died in Luffy's arms?" You asked worried. You knew that if that happened that won't be good for Luffy's sanity. "Yes. His last words were passed on to Luffy." Garp answered. Your heart was breaking more and more as you imagined what had happened at that war.
"He died without knowing he was going to be a dad." You said quietly as you looked at your hands. "I found out I was pregnant after we parted. He didn't want me being anywhere near Blackbeard. Now that I look back on it, I regret that I had not rebelled against his wishes. That decision may have changed his fate." You closed your eyes.
"(Name)..." Garp spoke up. "Hmm?" You looked at him. He gritted his teeth and continued. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry I wasn't able to save Ace." He apologized. Your eyes widened and began to shook your head. You grabbed his shoulder and made him stay straight.
"Garp-san, this is far from your fault. Ace died protecting someone he loved, he protected his little brother. He swore on his life that he will protect me and Luffy no matter what it costs him so I'm not mad at him for leaving me alone to raise our child. Yeah, you were there, but Garp-san you don't take any blame in this." You assured him.
"I remember how you stood next to Ace at the war. I remember how the both of you cried as you spoke to one another. I know the choice was hard one to take but I understand it." You said with a smile. Garp looked at you for a moment. "You're an amazing girl. I can see why Ace fell in love with you." He said.
"But his body was never found." Garp said out of the blue. Your eyes widened. "What?!" You yelped as you felt your heartbeat increasing. "After the war, Marines have agreed to let the Whitebeard pirates give proper burial to Ace and Whitebeard. But when they searched for Ace at the place he was killed, he was already gone. No Marines took him. He was given a grave however, I heard. Next to Whitebeard."
"This is- this is... What if he was saved? What if he didn't die after all?!" You felt your hope come back. "(Name)... I felt the same during the first months but... Have you heard any rumors of Ace being seen anywhere?" He asked quietly.
You closed your eyed once again. You couldn't let those thoughts crash your hope. There might still be some chances of Ace being alive...
"I don't want you to get your hopes up and do stupid things, (Name). Lay low for the time being. Raise your child without the world knowing that the blood of Gol D. Roger still exists in someone. I don't want this child to have the exact same fate as his grandfather and father. You have to be in this child's life." Garp said strictly. You gulped as you took in Garp's words. He's right.
Just because this little detail is true that doesn't mean you should just trow away your child's well being for a stupid 'maybe'.
"What happened to Luffy afterwards?" You asked. "He was badly injured. Both physical and mentally. He was saved by that Supernova, Trafalgar Law. We haven't
heard any news regarding the Straw Hats since Luffy rang the Ox Bell."
"I guess after everything that happened they needed a break." You mumbled. "But Luffy ringing the Ox Bell? That's not something he'd do." Garp shrugged. "Yeah, I thought that too. Probably Rayleigh's idea."
Your eyed widened at that familiar name but quickly smiled. "I see that that old man is still alive and kicking. I guess Luffy met him at Sabaody as well." Garp started to laugh as he remembered the events at the Archipelago. "Well, Luffy did punched an Celestial Dragon straight in the face." Your eyed widened at that information and began to laugh as well. For the first time in a long while, a real laugh.
"He punched a Celestial Dragon and got away with it?" You repeated. "I wouldn't expect anything less from my grandson." Grap said proudly as he continued to laugh.
You leaned on your right arm as you watched, with a smile, as Garp continued to brag about his grandsons.
What a family...
