Chapter 16: Official 4th member of Clamp School Detectives

"Takamura-senpai, these documents have been sorted, please take a look and then present it to Kaichou for signing."

Suoh looked in amazement at the two stacks of documents that Kanon had just finished sorting and had noted important points for each document column. Suoh silently thought to himself that if their Kaichou worked as efficiently as Kanon, it would be truly wonderful.

"Everyone has worked hard, let's take a break, have some tea and apple pie!"

"Thank you, Ijyuin!"

"No need to be so formal, just call me Akira, we are in the same grade after all!"

"Oh, Ijyuin studies in different class from Hanazaki, right?"

Nokoru sat playing with a fountain pen at the desk placed on the high podium at the end of the room, watching the three members of the Student Council below and smiling. Finally, Kanon also joined his team, and just as he had calculated, the workload of the council decreased significantly. Suoh no longer had to run around collecting and compiling documents, as Kanon took care of that. Suoh only needed to double-check before handing it over to him for a final decision.

"Here is your tea, Kaichou!"

"Thank you, Akira!"

And Nokoru happily finished his cup of tea in front of Akira's joyful eyes. Then Akira left the council room to attend his cooking class.

Kanon was now a full member of the Clamp school's Elementary Student Council as well as Detective Team. She served as an assistant to the secretary, reducing Suoh's workload to a minimum. After just two weeks of probation, Suoh completely trusted her. Although the paperwork at Clamp School was more abundant and challenging than elsewhere, Kanon found the documents to be well-organized and consistent, making sorting and processing them easy after learning the document system and processing methods for a few days. It seemed in her past life, Kanon had experience dealing with much messier paperwork in projects she had run. Since accepting this world completely, Kanon had decided to do her best, face every problems, and not run away from challenges, wanting to actively participate rather than passively observe, even though it was indeed not easy.
"Kanon-chan! How do you feel? Are you facing any difficulties?" Nokoru asked.

Hearing Nokoru's inquiry, Kanon stopped sipping her tea, looked up, and replied,

"It's not bad. The job is not difficult, but it is a bit boring. For someone full of enthusiasm and fun-loving like Kaichou, sitting still and dealing with this pile of paperwork is truly challenging. I can understand why you often avoid work like this!"

Touched by her candid words, Nokoru leaped from his imposingly large desk and rushed to Kanon's side, shedding tears of joy,

"Kanon-chan, you are truly my soulmate. Suoh! Have you heard? Kanon also agrees that this job is too boring."

"But it doesn't mean you can become irresponsible just because it's boring, Kaichou. You need to think about the consequences of documents piling up and complaints not being resolved.

Suoh used straightforward and reasonable arguments to rebuke his lazy president.

Kanon took advantage of their argument to finish her cup of tea. Placing the cup on the table, she looked at the clock:

"It's time! I have to go back to class."

"Ah! Thank you for your hard work!"

Both Nokoru and Suoh stopped their argument and bid farewell to Kanon in unison. As Kanon left the room, Nokoru asked Suoh:

"What do you think of Kanon?

"She's very capable; not everyone can handle this messy paperwork so quickly."

"I'm not talking about that."

"Then what do you want to talk about?" - Suoh asked innocently.

Nokoru stood up, hands clasped behind his back, looking down at the schoolyard through the large glass door in front of him.

"Suoh, you know, all of us gathered here have a reason, not by chance or just the choice of each member."

Suoh, contemplatively watching his usually lackadaisical student council president, felt tense at these rare moments of brilliance. It was only later that he hesitantly spoke up:

"Then you mean... we... this student council..."

But before he could finish his sentence, Nokoru's expression quickly turned radiant with a bright, intense gaze and a beaming smile, causing him to stumble:

"Exactly, Kanon must be here as part of the student council and our detective team, aiming to help the happiness of women worldwide. We cannot do without female members to supplement the missing knowledge."

"Kai...chou... you..."

Suoh struggled to rise from the ground, his face contorted, looking at Nokoru shining with determination, marching straight towards the goal of his life.

On the way back to the classroom, Kanon sneezed twice in a row, not understanding if it was because she had kicked the blanket out at night to the point of feeling cold. At that moment, she saw Akira's shadow rushing out from the cooking area and immediately called out:

"Ijyuin!"

Startled, Akira turned around, almost dropping the cake in his hand, but his quick instinct helped him regain balance in time. Kanon noticed that even though Akira seemed to struggle a bit with the cake, his other hand still tightly held onto the remaining box, preventing any mishaps.

"Oh, Hanazaki-san, are you also heading back to class?"

"Yes, and did you just finish your cooking class? Are you taking the cake back to the council room?"

"That's right. Kaichou and Takamura-senpai really like this cake. Why are you heading back to class early? Stay and have some cake."

"Oh, I have something to do at the library. Please save me a piece of cake.."

Kanon couldn't resist satisfying her curiosity and asked:

"Is that box also filled with cake? Why so many?"

"Ah, this one belongs to a senior in my cooking class. She dropped it, and I want to return it, but she ran off for some reason."

Akira's voice carried a hint of sadness and frustration, indicating that things were not as simple as they seemed. Remembering what she knew, Kanon offered Akira sincere advice:

"Why don't you try asking Kaichou? Isn't he someone who understands women very well?"

"I was actually thinking the same, but..."

Akira paused and looked at Kanon thoughtfully.

"Wouldn't Hanazaki understand even better?"

Kanon widened her eyes, how should she answer this? Saying she didn't understand would be like saying she wasn't like a girl, but if she said she did understand, it would be meddling in someone else's business.

"Well, actually, even though I'm a girl, there are some things that are hard to understand clearly, while Kaichou is an expert, so it's only natural to ask him."

After much contemplation, Akira firmly said:

"You're right, I'll go to the council room right away!"

Having said that, Akira quickly ran towards the council room as if eager to uncover the secret behind the newly found box.

Watching Akira's quickly disappearing figure, Kanon sighed and muttered to herself:

"You worked hard, Akira!"

Being a good person is truly hard.

Today, there was a modern literature class by Professor Kunokawa at the university auditorium, so Kanon quickly arranged her schedule and made her way to the lecture right after her classes. Professor Kunokawa, who was over 50 years old this year, was a very dignified and respected person, yet his lectures were also very engaging and humorous. Kanon had requested his lecture schedule so she could attend during her free hours. During his lectures, she accumulated a wealth of knowledge and sparked many ideas, so she didn't want to miss any of his lectures.

Kanon's last class ended later than usual because her teacher wanted students to sign up for extracurricular activities for the following week. So at this moment, Kanon rushed to Professor Kunokawa's auditorium, which was already packed with people. She hesitated for a while before spotting an empty seat and quickly squeezed herself into it. As she sat down, she finally let out a sigh of relief, feeling exhausted. Luckily, she had managed to secure a seat in the central area, close to the staircase, so she didn't have to weave through the rows of seats to find a spot.

As she sat down, Kanon searched for a handkerchief to wipe off the sweat, but couldn't find one. She was about to use her sleeve when a hand next to her extended a white handkerchief towards her, accompanied by a very gentle voice:

"If you don't mind, you can use this for now."

Kanon looked up and saw a beautiful sister, who was not only beautiful but also incredibly gentle. Kanon gratefully accepted the fragrant handkerchief:

"Thank you so much, um... Miss..."

"I'm Kudou Yukiko. Nice to meet you!"

"Yes, hello, I'm Hanazaki Kanon. Nice to meet you too..."

Just as Kanon finished introducing herself and before she could shake hands with the beautiful lady, Kanon saw the beauty's expression change. She stammered and said to Kanon:

"So, you're Hanazaki Kanon? The famous author with those incredibly popular short stories in Clamp literary magazine, right? I love your works so much, I eagerly await each new story..."

And then the beautiful lady turned into a chatterbox, speaking non-stop, and finally didn't forget to pull out a notebook to ask for Kanon's autograph. Kanon felt like she would get used to this quickly. She couldn't understand how the detective trio could withstand the onslaught of countless fangirls like this.

After signing, Kanon smiled politely at the beautiful lady and then heard her speak again, this time with a less excited tone, sounding like she was recounting a dream:

"I really liked your short story last week about the love between a teacher and student. They fell in love despite age boundaries, status differences, and the way they expressed their love was both innocent and sincere. I wish I could have a love like that too."

Thinking about that love story, Kanon felt a bit uneasy. It was because the editorial team kept pushing her to write a love story, but how much did she really know about love at her age? Nevertheless, it was just writing, not real love, so she didn't mind. But wait, this beautiful lady, named Kudou Yukiko, liked a teacher-student kind of love. Kanon widened her eyes. Did she turn into Conan just by joining the detective team? Everywhere she went, she encountered a culprit, no, she met the key character in the case. Wasn't this the lady who dropped the box of apple pie near Akira?

But before Kanon could say anything, Professor Kunokawa entered, so she had to put everything aside and listen to the lecture. However, by the end of the class, she had the opportunity to invite the beautiful lady for a drink to thank her for the handkerchief, promising to wash it and return it to her. The two sat in the university café, and Kanon suddenly asked:

"Have you liked anyone, Miss Kudou? Please forgive my rudeness because I'm very curious. Earlier, you talked about my story with such a warm look in your eyes."

Upon hearing this, the beautiful lady almost sprayed the coffee in her mouth and then felt embarrassed about her indiscreet behavior. She stammered in response:

"No... that, I... it's nothing, I... I do like someone, but I don't know if that person likes me back. I want to do something for that person, but it seems futile."

Sensing the sadness in her voice, Kanon could understand the situation and gently comforted her:

"If you want to know it then you have to try, right? You've read my stories, the characters are all action-oriented. Not just once, but many times, you have to act to express your feelings, until you can touch the other person's heart."

Kudou Yukiko raised her head to look at Kanon, and there seemed to be a flicker of fire in her eyes, but then she lowered her gaze, feeling discouraged, and said:

"I've tried to show my feelings, but... I'm afraid, I'm afraid of rejection because I'm not skilled at this. I just want to do it well, but in the end, I'm just too clumsy."

"Kudou-san, listen to me, there is nothing more painful than not being able to express your feelings. It's better to be rejected, whether it's good or not."

Kudou Yukiko looked at the girl in front of her once again. The girl's calm smile somehow softened her heart and ignited her fighting spirit. Yes, how could she be stopped here. Once started, there must be an end. She would go meet that person and pour out her heart.

"Thank you, Hanazaki-san. I feel stronger now and I know what I have to do."

"By the way, if you want to prepare something delicious for that person, you can ask my friend for help. He is the best chef."

"And your friend is..."

"Ijyuin Akira!"

After parting ways with Kudou Yukiko, Kanon sighed in relief. At least she wouldn't be sad anymore. After all, her feelings would reach the person she liked.

Kanon returned to the Student Council official. As a member of the StudentCouncil, she had responsibilities to fulfill. Seiji was busy with archery practice, so they had agreed to leave together after finishing their work at the Council. Currently, Kanon was sitting in front of the apple pie that Kudou Yukiko had dropped, listening to the trio of detectives recounting the situation. For the first time since arriving this world, Kanon felt uncomfortable knowing the plot in advance. Just when she had given the case's main character some advice, now she had to discreetly give suggestions to the detective team. It was exhausting.

"So you have found the person who dropped the pie, Kaichou? You truly are a genius, remembering the names of all the female students in the school."

Kanon pretended to be astonished and exclaimed dramatically.

"Kanon-chan, your fake expression is too obvious!'

Nokoru looked at Kanon with a poker face.

"Huh, does Hanazaki do that?"

Akira remained innocent and clueless, while Suoh just cleared his throat to bring the focus back to the issue.

"The issue is why she dropped the pie and didn't bother to pick it up. According to Ijyuin's description, she seemed not only in a hurry but also on the verge of tears.

"Tears??? Crying???"

Nokoru turned back sharply upon hearing about a distressed woman. This time, it was Kanon's turn to maintain a poker face and she raised her hand to stop someone from exaggerating and preparing to explode.

"Kaichou, please listen to Takamura-senpai!"

"Do you have any thoughts on this?"

Sensing something from Kanon, Nokoru immediately asked her:

"No, I don't. But if she dropped it and didn't pick it up, it's clear she doesn't want it anymore, right?"

The three boys' heads leaned in together to watch Kanon eat the pie:

"She doesn't want it anymore?

"Well, let's assume that she intended to make the pie as a gift for someone but felt it was too bad to give away, so she didn't dare to. And if she left in such a hurry without even opening it, she must have encountered something really upsetting."

"What could that be?" - Akira asked anxiously. He didn't want to see anyone feeling sad, especially when it involved food. For him, food should bring joy to people.

"Who knows, we have to ask that person herself. The pie is delicious, thank you, Ijyuin."

The next day, Kanon requested a leave at the Student Council room to go to the magazine editorial office to discuss and finalize the last chapter draft of the long adventure story "The Adventures of the Red-Haired Princess" and brainstorm ideas for a new series. When she returned to the Student Council room, everything was settled. Akira saw her and rushed over with shining eyes:

"Hanazaki, you are a genius! I met Miss Kudou, she dropped the pie because she wanted to get rid of it, she also thanked me and asked for my guidance on baking apple pie. She no longer looks sad like yesterday but full of energy and determination. She wants to bake a pie for someone she likes, I'm so happy, and finally, she succeeded."

And then she was dragged to the tea table to eat apple pie with other members. Kanon savored the super sweet taste of the pie and took a sip of bitter tea, a perfect combination.

"She also said that it was thanks to her idol that she had the courage to do this. I don't know who that formidable person is, I asked her but she just smiled and said that person suggested she ask me for guidance on making apple pie."

*Cough cough cough!*

Kanon choked on the pie and tea at the same time, coughing and wheezing. Miss Kudou, she really knew how to tease.

"Kanon-chan, are you okay?"

Nokoru was worried and was about to pat Kanon on the back when the door to the Student Council room burst open with a bang, and Setsu rushed in like a gust of wind.

"Let go, don't touch Hanazaki! Are you plotting against her while we, the Ichikawa family, are not here to protect her? How could anyone choke on the apple pie? I've been watching you all this time, and now I've caught you red-handed trying to harm Hanazaki!"

"*Cough*, Setsu, it was my fault, not what you think."

Kanon tried to explain, but Setsu didn't listen and was about to charge at Suoh. Just then, an arrow shot through Setsu's collar, pinning him to a nearby bench. And then, as if on cue, Seiji, with a solemn face and a bow in hand, still dressed in his training attire, calmly entered the Student Council room. He pulled out the arrow, grabbed Setsu by the collar, and dragged Setsu away. Before leaving, he bowed his head in apology to everyone.

The Student Council room door closed again, leaving four wide-eyed individuals in stunned silence. Another day at the Clamp Detective Team passed by peacefully.
