Chapter 18

▪️G O L N A R▪️

In the weeks that followed, things seemed to go from bad to worse.

Alaric and I never really got to spend much time enjoying our new marital status. Instead, we had to deal with various attacks on parts of the kingdom, increasing in violence with each one.

Despite our best efforts to quell the unrest, the situation seemed to spiral further out of control with each passing day. It was as though an invisible hand was guiding the chaos, orchestrating events with a malevolent intent that defied comprehension.

As we delved deeper into the source of the disturbances, it became increasingly clear that someone—or something—was wielding powerful magic to sow discord and destruction throughout the Fae Kingdom. The attacks were too coordinated, too precise to be mere coincidence. It was as though an unseen puppeteer was pulling the strings, manipulating events from the shadows to further their own dark agenda.

Alaric and I worked tirelessly alongside the council and other high-ranking Fae, scouring ancient books and consulting with the most knowledgeable scholars in a desperate bid to uncover the identity of our adversary.

Even though the answers remained elusive, hidden behind layers of ancient lore and arcane mysteries, that did not stop us from strategizing and planning a way to restore order.

The moon hung low in the night sky, casting a silvery glow while Alaric and I patrolled the nearby city limits on the eastern side. The air was heavy with the scent of smoke and fear, a stark reminder of the turmoil that had gripped our realm in recent times.

Large numbers of Fae warriors patrolled around the kingdom day and night, their vigilant eyes scanning for any sign of trouble. Clad in armour adorned with intricate runes and armed with weapons forged from pure magic, they stood as stalwart defenders of our kingdom, their unwavering resolve a beacon of hope in the face of adversity.

Alaric and I had parted ways from a group of warriors, opting to explore a particular street on our own.

"It seems as though there's no end in sight," I murmured, my voice heavy with exhaustion as I glanced at my husband. "No matter how hard we fight, they just keep coming back."

Alaric's jaw tightened; his gaze fixed on the horizon as he scanned the city for any signs of trouble. "We cannot afford to lose hope, my love," he replied, his voice resolute. "We must continue to stand strong, no matter the odds."

I nodded in silent agreement, though the weight of our responsibilities felt heavier than ever. "I know," I said softly, reaching out to squeeze his hand in a silent gesture of solidarity. "But sometimes it feels as though we're fighting a losing battle. These creatures are unlike anything anyone has ever seen."

Alaric's grip tightened around mine, his expression grim yet determined. "We cannot afford to give in to despair," he insisted, his voice quiet but firm.

The stone streets echoed with the sounds of our footsteps, the rhythmic clack of our boots a steady cadence against the backdrop of chaos. Buildings lay in ruins around us, their once-grand facades now reduced to rubble by the relentless onslaught of the rebels and the creatures that worked alongside them. The air was thick with the acrid scent of smoke and ash, a tangible reminder of the fires that had ravaged our once-thriving kingdom.

In the wake of the devastation, we had been forced to evacuate this side of the city, a desperate attempt to contain the chaos and protect the remaining inhabitants from the horrors that now prowled its streets. The once-bustling thoroughfares now lay eerily deserted, haunted by the echoes of a realm that had been torn apart by forces beyond our comprehension.

Despite our best efforts to maintain order, the creatures that roamed these desolate streets seemed to defy all attempts at containment. Their twisted forms moved with an unnatural grace; their eyes gleaming with a spiteful intelligence that sent shivers down my spine.

But still, we persevered, doing everything in our power to keep the creatures at bay and safeguard those who remained within the city walls. It was a grim and thankless task, fraught with danger at every turn, but we knew that we could not afford to falter in our duty to protect our people.

Here and there, we passed by the shattered remnants of what had once been busy marketplaces and lively taverns, now reduced to little more than smouldering ruins. The haunting echoes of past lives seemed to linger in the air, a silent testament to the devastation that had befallen our once-proud kingdom.

As we pressed on, the weight of the destruction hung heavy upon us, a constant reminder of the stakes at hand. With every step, we were reminded of the lives that had been lost and the homes that had been destroyed, fuelling our determination to restore order to our fractured realm no matter the cost.

Alaric's voice pulled me from my thoughts as he said, "As long as we stand united, there is always hope for a brighter tomorrow."

"Indeed, but I can't help but worry about recent events. These creatures, they're like something out of a nightmare," I remarked, my voice laced with disbelief while thinking about the recent attacks. "I just don't understand what manner of magic could conjure such abominations."

His brows furrowed in deep concern as he surveyed our surroundings, "I fear we may be facing a force beyond our understanding," he replied gravely. "These creatures seem to defy the laws of nature, their very existence an affront to everything we know."

It seemed unfathomable that anyone on the Isle of Wrobel could wield such magical power. Yet here these creatures were, wreaking havoc upon our kingdom with impunity.

When the reports continued to pour in, detailing the increasing frequency and severity of the attacks, Alaric and I knew that we could not afford to stand idly by and watch as our kingdom was ravaged by these dark forces. And so, despite the lateness of the hour, we resolved to take matters into our own hands, patrolling the streets under the cover of night in a desperate bid to keep our people safe from harm.

It was a chilling realization, one that left us both feeling vulnerable and uncertain in the face of this new threat. It seemed increasingly likely that these creatures hailed from another realm entirely, summoned to our world with malicious intent.

As the attacks persisted and the situation grew increasingly dire over the last few weeks, Alaric and I found ourselves facing an unprecedented threat: bizarre creatures unlike anything we had ever encountered before. These beings, born of twisted magic and ancient darkness, haunted the nightmares of even the bravest Fae.

Among them were spectral serpents we named Bansheewyrms. They wreathed in wraithlike mist that emitted bone-chilling wails capable of paralyzing their victims with fear. Their sinuous forms glided through the shadows, striking with lethal precision before vanishing into the night.

Then there were the Thornfiends, grotesque amalgamations of vine and thorn, their razor-sharp tendrils lashing out with deadly accuracy. They prowled the city borders, coming from the nearby forests and marshes, their twisted forms blending seamlessly with the foliage as they lay in wait for unsuspecting prey.

But perhaps most terrifying of all were the Shadowstalkers, their forms shrouded in darkness and their eyes burning with an unholy fire. They moved with unearthly grace, striking swiftly and silently before melting back into the shadows from whence they came.

As Alaric and I worked tirelessly to keep everyone safe, we quickly realised that our strategies were woefully inadequate against these new and unknown adversaries. Each attack brought with it a fresh wave of terror and devastation, leaving our kingdom reeling in its wake.

But amidst the chaos and uncertainty, there was a glimmer of hope—a determination to stand firm against the encroaching darkness and protect our people at all costs. With every passing day, Alaric and I marshalled our warriors and devised new strategies to combat the ever-growing threat.

Yet, as the attacks grew more frequent and more ferocious, it became increasingly clear that we were facing an enemy unlike any we had ever encountered before. And as we braced ourselves for the battles yet to come, I could not shake the feeling that the fate of the Fae Kingdom hung in the balance, teetering on the edge of oblivion.

As Alaric and I continued our patrol through the shattered streets, a sense of foreboding hung heavy in the air. The moon cast an eerie glow upon the devastation around us, illuminating the twisted remnants of once-grand buildings and casting long shadows that seemed to writhe with malevolence.

Without warning, the night erupted into chaos as Thornfiends emerged from the shadows, their grotesque forms looming menacingly before us. Twisted vines and thorns writhed with unnatural fervour, their razor-sharp edges gleaming in the moonlight as they closed in on us.

"Alaric, to your left!" I heard myself shout, instinctively stepping in front of him as I summoned the power of my magic.

Not wasting any time, I unleashed a wave of my magic, commanding the ground to do my bidding. The earth rose up, slamming into the Thornfiends with devastating force, sending them reeling back in disarray while also trying to simultaneously bury them. But the creatures were relentless, their twisted forms regrouping with terrifying speed as they advanced once more. I felt a surge of panic rising within me as I struggled to hold them at bay, the weight of their numbers pressing in upon us from all sides.

It was then that I felt Alaric's hand upon my shoulder.

"Stand back, my love," he said, his voice calm yet determined as he raised his hands before him.

No matter how many times I had seen it to date, witnessing Alaric unleash the full extent of his magic never failed to leave me in awe. He was the only person I knew who could command all four elements, and seeing him in action was always a sight to behold.

While he stood in front of me, bathed in the ethereal glow of his power, I could not help but marvel at the sheer magnificence of his abilities. With a primal roar that echoed through the night, Alaric called upon the elemental fury of fire with a display both awe-inspiring and fearsome. Flames erupted from his outstretched hands, dancing and swirling in a mesmerizing display of power.

The air crackled with the intensity of his magic, the heat of the flames licking at the very edges of my senses. Alaric's command over the element was absolute, each movement a testament to his mastery as he directed the flames with precision and control.

I stood transfixed, my heart pounding in my chest as I beheld the spectacle before me. The sight of Alaric harnessing the primal power of fire filled me with a sense of wonder and admiration, mingled with a healthy dose of apprehension at the sheer magnitude of his abilities.

As the torrent of power surged forth from his fingertips like a tempest unleashed, I shielded my eyes against the blinding light that erupted from his touch. The brilliance of his magic was overwhelming, an extraordinary cascade of searing light that bathed the entire street in its radiant glow.

For a moment, time seemed to stand still as the air crackled with the raw control of Alaric's magic. And then, with a deafening roar that echoed through the night, the torrent of energy collided with the advancing Thornfiends, engulfing them in a maelstrom of searing light and thunderous force.

I watched in wonder as the creatures writhed and convulsed within the swirling vortex of magic, their twisted forms unravelling before my eyes until there was nothing left but smoke and ash. The street lay silent and still, the echoes of battle fading into the night as the last remnants of the Thornfiends were consumed by the searing light.

As his magic slowly faded, Alaric approached me with a reassuring smile. "Are you alright?" Alaric asked, his voice gentle yet concerned.

I nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over me at the sight of him unharmed. "I'm fine," I replied, my voice tinged with gratitude. "Thanks to you."

He reached out, taking my hand in his as he offered me a reassuring squeeze. "We make quite the team, don't we?" Alaric remarked with a soft chuckle.

"Well, you did most of the work," I smiled, squeezing his hand in return.

Alaric chuckled softly, a playful twinkle in his eyes, "Ah, but I couldn't have done it without your moral support."

I rolled my eyes playfully, unable to suppress a laugh at his jest. "Oh, so I'm just here for moral support now, am I?" I retorted, giving him a playful nudge with my shoulder.

He grinned, widened, the movement lighting up his features as he leaned in closer and winked, "Well, that and to keep me from getting too carried away with my magic."

"Indeed, someone has to keep you grounded," I responded, my tone teasing yet affectionate as I leaned in to press a quick kiss to his cheek.

As our laughter faded into the night, a sombre note crept into our conversation.

"Speaking of alliances," Alaric began, his expression thoughtful. "It's been almost a month since Izara left to take the proposal to King Baldur and we've yet to hear back a response."

"True," I replied, trying to sound reassuring despite my own growing concern. "I'm sure they're just taking their time to discuss things thoroughly. After all, it's a significant decision for both our kingdoms."

Alaric nodded, though the worry still lingered in his eyes. "I hope you're right," he said, his voice tinged with uncertainty. "But it wouldn't hurt to send a messenger to check on their progress, just to be safe."

I knew he was right, but the thought of appearing too eager for their response made me hesitate.

"Perhaps we should give them a little more time," I suggested, hoping to quell his rising anxiety. "Izara knows what she's doing, plus King Baldur is a great leader, I know that he'll help us, he's probably just ensuring all the orc bands are in unison with the decision."

With a nod of reluctant agreement, Alaric conceded, though I could tell that the uncertainty still gnawed at him.

Hours later, as the first light of dawn broke on the horizon, I knew that no matter the challenges that lay ahead, Alaric and I would stand united against the tide of chaos, our spirits unbroken and our determination unwavering.

Although a part of me could not help but wonder how much longer we could hold out against the encroaching darkness.
