Bridget Sweeney
Stargate SG-1 Character Profile (fan-made and canon compliant)
by Layla
Disclaimer and Copyright Claim: Bridget Sweeney is my own original character, as are her mother, her father, her student, her future children, and her student’s father. However, every other character mentioned in this profile has already been created by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glasner, the creators of Stargate and its various continuations, which is the fictional universe that my characters reside in. Bridget, her mother, her father, her student, her student’s father, and their stories are all my original works that I have used to create my own story line that takes place during Stargate and its various continuations, making this a canon compliant work of fanfiction. In other words, it is an extension and addition to the Stargate story lines that is meant to add to it in such a way that is entertaining to new readers but is not so far-fetched that it completely deviates from the overall plot of the series. It is not a full fanfiction, but it is a specific profile for my character and a summary of her story. I do not claim to own the Stargate franchise or any of its characters, but I do own the characters of my own creation whom I have previously mentioned, which includes their stories and personalities. Personality and Character Analysis: Bridget Sweeney was dedicated to her work and often saw the bright side to every situation. She was often seen as eccentric because of how blunt and cheerful she could be, but she took it as a compliment and never let it bring her down. She did not deal with grief well and would often shut down (mentally and emotionally), leading to dysfunction. When she held grudges (which was rare), she typically held them for too long. She was insecure and would often second-guess herself as well as blame herself for things that were not her fault. She would also get carried away with her work. She was intelligent, well-read, and open-minded. She had a strong moral compass and was unwilling to back down on her beliefs unless people’s lives were in danger. She also grew shy and bashful at the most unexpected times. However, she could also be stubborn and oblivious, which was sometimes a troublesome combination for her. Her strong sense of humanity and empathetic nature balanced out her stubbornness and she became wise over the years.
Character Arc
1994: Bridget Sweeney was born in Denver, Colorado to Irish immigrants. In America, she faced severe discrimination for her Irish heritage and did not have many friends other than her cousins in Ireland. No one she knew or was related to was in the military, but when she was in high school, she decided to study military history because she was mortified by war and wanted to know how it started. She had the intention of de-escelating conflicts and preventing wars, which led to her interest in becoming a military historian.
Bridget’s father, a medical doctor named Liam Sweeney, encouraged Bridget in pursuing a career as a historian. However, Bridget’s mother, a retired biochemist named Caoimhe Fay, thought that Bridget would be better off pursuing something in a different field. Bridget and Caomhie had a strained relationship because of Bridget’s career choice, even after she accepted a scholarship to university at nineteen years old.
While pursuing her military history degree, she read a study by an archaeologist named Daniel Jackson that proposed a theory about aliens in the pyramids of Giza, suggesting that the pyramids were older than they seemed. Many people mocked his theory and he was laughed out of academia for it. Bridget, however, believed it and began to follow his work, though she never referenced it for fear of ruining her career. In the year 1994, she graduated from university one year early, at twenty-three years old, with a doctorate in history, and began teaching history at a university in Colorado while publishing papers on the side.
1998-2000: Due to her work, Bridget was invited in the year 1998 to be a member of a military organization named Stargate Command, which pertained to off-world matters. The offer was extended to her in-person by Jack ‘O’ Neall, the commanding officer of SG-1 (an elite United States Air Force special operations team who protected Earth from off-world threats), who said that he would like to have her working at the Stargate Command center (SGC). She considered the offer for no more than a few days and sent an acceptance letter to Jack along with her resume for good measure. Jack interviewed her and she was accepted into the program on the spot. She quit her job as a professor and became a member of SGC, though she struggled to fit in with everyone there.
One of Bridget’s university students, Layla Hameed, arrived at the SGC, begging Bridget to help her rescue her father, Omar, who was a retired Jordanian soldier who lived in Kansas and had been taken host by a Goa’uld for his military knowledge regarding Ancients and Atlantis. SG-1 received authorization to go through the gate and help, and Bridget was permitted to go as well since Layla specifically requested Bridget’s help. Eventually, Omar was put into the sarcophagus and saved. Bridget was awarded for her heroic actions by being offered an official position as SG-1’s military historian, a position which she eagerly accepted.
2002-2004: After Daniel ascended, Bridget found herself deep in grief and found comfort in befriending a Kelownan named Jonas Quinn, who was present when Daniel was poisoned. When Anubis captured Bridget, she hallucinated her difficult past with her parents and visions of Daniel that made her re-think her feelings about him. One year later, Daniel returned to human form from ascension with no memories of his past, which re-traumatized her. When Jonas left to take care of matters on his home planet, Bridget tried to come to terms with her feelings.
Ever since Anubis first captured Bridget and said that he wanted to use her as bait, she had been looking into the different victims of the Goa’uld and wanted to pick up on patterns. She realized that every Goa’uld who took over an innocent victim seemed to have a specific motive (other than the ones who were simply power hungry) and she wanted to develop a system that tracked each victim when they were captured or alerted Stargate Command every time a victim was taken. This system became known as Bridget’s Law and was eventually passed by the American government. Unfortunately, many people who suffered at the hands of the Gou’uld were unwilling to forgive their hosts, leading a vengeful mother named Josephine to abduct Bridget and force her to have Bridget’s Law revoked.
After Bridget was rescued by SG-1 and Josephine fled, Daniel (whose memory had been fully restored) admitted that he was in love with Bridget. Bridget said that she felt the same way. They shared a kiss and decided to enter into a romantic relationship. Their relationship was eventually made by public (by accident) when the President allowed a camera crew to publicize Stargate Command. Tragically, SG-1’s resident doctor, Janet Fraiser, received a fatal blast to the torso from one of Anubis’s Jaffa, leaving Bridget devastated. Shortly after, Josephine returned to seek revenge on Bridget.
Bridget eventually told Josephine that she would fight to have the law revoked as long as no one was hurt. Josephine only agreed to do so if Bridget made a public announcement that she was trying to have the law revoked because she saw the harm that it caused. Bridget made the announcement while Josephine was still detained. As promised, Josephine called off her followers and the issue died down, though it was still present due to people on both sides fighting each other. The law was revoked shortly after and Josephine said that she was happy to remain detained now that her job was done. After the publicity of their relationship, Bridget grew distant from Daniel. Many other factors (such as danger, lack of stability, and the fact that he wanted children while she did not) ultimately led to the end of their relationship. Despite the end of their romance, their friendship remained intact.
When Bridget realized that Liam was ill, she took a temporary leave. When Liam passed away, Bridget resigned.
2005-2007: A few months after SG-1 disbanded, Cameron Mitchell (who had saved SG-1 previously) was recruited by Stargate Command’s new general, Hank Landry, to be SG-1’s new leader. In an effort to bring the team back together, Cameron traveled to recruit all of SG-1’s original members. Bridget was the first member he approached. Though initially reluctant, she agreed (at the encouragement of Caomhie) and was reunited with her team again shortly after. She also met Vala Mal Doran, a mischievous woman who did not get along with Daniel. Bridget and Vala did not get along initially. Later on, Bridget received a call from Layla, who said that the Ori had murdered Omar because he refused to submit to the Ori religion. She said that she ran away and was in hiding with her husband, Ali. Because Daniel and Vala needed to remain at the SGC, Cameron and Teal’c accompanied Bridget to Kansas, where they all spoke to Layla and Ali. Layla was devastated that her father was dead and Bridget promised that she would avenge him. Bridget, Cameron, and Teal’c all agreed that it would be safest option for Layla and Ali to come with them to Stargate Command, where they would receive special protection.
The SGC held a funeral for Omar and Layla said that she wanted to be a part of the fight against the Ori. She said that she had a nursing degree and could be of use at the SGC if she was given a chance. Bridget vouched for Layla to be a member of the SGC and after going through several tests, she was let in, while Ali went through the same process to become an engineer there. Following the funeral, Bridget and Vala ended up on a mission together, where they strengthened their connection and became good friends.
While investigating a new planet (P40-687), SG-1 uncovered an ancient relic tied to the Ori. Bridget and Cameron uncovered an ancient weapon that Bridget identified as historically significant regarding the military history of the Ori. She discovered symbols associated with old war methods while studying the artifact, presumably referring to conflicts between the Ori and the Ancients. This revelation led to a secret element of the relic that SG-1 needed to use to defeat the Ori. When Cameron and Bridget realized that they were being pursued by Ori followers, Bridget recommended adopting guerrilla tactics to outwit their adversaries. Bridget and Cameron covered each other throughout the fight and he was thoroughly impressed with her skills, especially because she was not officially trained in the military. They eventually regrouped with the rest of SG-1. Bridget determined that it was best not to use the weapon until they brought it back to the SGC to be studied.
SG-1 was dispatched to P3X-555 to study mysterious atmospheric variations that were influencing both technology and the environment in unexpected ways. The mission took an unexpected turn when the team was forced to disperse and study different parts of the planet. Cameron and Bridget were partnered up to investigate an ancient edifice that could contain the key to stopping the fluctuations. The catch: the environment was hostile, and their communication technology was about to break totally. As a result, Cameron and Bridget were forced to rely on each other to navigate and solve the problem. They began to confide in each other and rely on each other in ways that they normally wouldn’t, sharing stories about their families and their past relationships.
Caomhie came through the stargate and claimed that she wanted to apply for a job there. Though Landry was initially annoyed by Caomhie’s surprise appearance, he decided to give her a chance due to his credentials as a scientist. She did an interview and was considered for a position, but not given a straight answer. Since she was there, he asked if she could stay and watch Bridget work. Though Bridget was busy, she enjoyed Caomhie’s company and asked Landry if Caomhie could stick around. Landry reluctantly agreed. Though Bridget and Caomhie’s relationship was still rocky, especially when Caomhie expressed her disdain for Bridget going through the stargate, Bridget realized it was because Caomhie was worried about her and they talked things over. Their relationship slowly began to repair.
The Asgard, Thor, said that the Asgard people had decided to donate their most sophisticated technology and their complete knowledge base to the Tau'ri, the only race that they trusted enough to do so. Thor eventually bestowed the title of “fifth race” to the humans before the Asgard committed mass suicide. Meanwhile, SG-1 and their allies, including the Free Jaffa, were preparing for a full-scale assault on the Ori. They wanted to stop the Ori from using a superweapon that may destroy Earth. However, the crew faced overwhelming odds because to the Ori's superior technology. In a desperate move, the team planned to use the Stargate and Asgard time dilation technology to hold off the Ori long enough for reinforcements to arrive. SG-1 also implemented Bridget, Carolyn, and Layla’s military plan for the upcoming assault. They activated the time dilation device on the Odyssey, an Asgard-designed ship, causing time on board to move significantly slower than in the outside world and delaying the assault so that SG-1 would have enough time to implement a new plan.
Bridget used some of the synthesized food and supplies to cook and bake. She also took up painting. On the outside, Bridget remained composed. It became apparent how much she was suffering when she started having an intense panic attack in the middle of conversing with Cameron, leading him to keep a closer eye on her. Whenever one of them became restless, they would hold each other. After six months, Bridget realized that she was in love with Cameron and admitted it to him, without expecting anything in return. She wasn’t too surprised when he admitted that he felt the same way for awhile and they agreed to see where things went. From that point, their romance grew into a steady and committed relationship. On the second year, they got engaged and had a small wedding on the ship a few weeks following their engagement. Their wedding was the beginning of a marriage that would last throughout the next fifty years while they were trapped on board with the rest of the team.
By the end of the fifty years, Sam and Cameron figured out a plan: the energy needed to turn back time was found in the Ori energy beam's power. However, in order to complete the procedure, they needed to choose one person to exist outside of the time reversal. This person would continue to live at their old age, while everyone else would return to how they were fifty years ago, losing all recollection of the fifty years that they spent on the Odyssey. As a Jaffa with a significantly longer life span than the other crew members, Teal'c offered to stay behind and carry out the rescue while being shielded in a different field. When time was reversed, Teal’c implemented the rescue. Odyssey left before it was destroyed, saving SG-1 and the Asgard legacy.
2008: The SG-1 team was still fighting the Ori. Cameron led the crew as they discovered the Ark of Truth, an ancient artifact. This artifact had the ability to neutralize the Ori's influence and potentially terminate their religious crusade, which had been threatening the cosmos. James Marrick, an International Oversight Advisory (IOA) representative, used the Asgard computer core to build a Replicator, intending to put it on an Ori ship and let it spread to their entire fleet. With several Ori ships approaching, Cameron and Bridget attempted to beam Daniel, Teal’c, Vala, and Tomin up from the Ori galaxy, but the replicator took over the system and kept them from doing so.
While the rest of the team searched for the Ark, Bridget and Cameron found themselves fighting off the Replicators by themselves. Unfortunately, they were separated by the Replicators. Bridget woke up in the infirmary. Caomhie, who was now a full-time biologist for the SGC, was sitting at her bedside and told her that she had been bleeding. Layla, who had become a nurse there, was the attending physician and told Bridget that she needed to rest. Bridget and Cameron reunited in the medical ward, where he debriefed her on what happened and asked her if there was anything he could do to help her feel better. All she did was ask him to stay with her, and stay he did.
SG-1 and Jack attended the Tok'ra extraction ceremony for Ba'al, the final Goa'uld System Lord. Ba'al stated, however, that he was only the last clone and that the original Ba'al had a backup plan. The true Ba'al traveled back in time to 1939 Earth and slaughtered the crew of the Achilles, the ship transporting the Stargate to the United States. The captain of the Achilles lasted long enough to drop the explosive that Ba'al had put overboard, saving the ship from destruction. In the present, people and objects began to disappear, including Bridget, Vala, and Teal’c.
The clone killed Jack, but Sam, Daniel, and Cameron managed to reach the Stargate. They were astonished to find themselves inside the derelict Achilles, which had drifted to the Arctic – Ba'al's actions had created a history in which the Stargate Program had never occurred. After leaving the sinking Achilles, they were rescued by a group led by Jack. Although Landry trusted their story (following extensive interrogation), they were denied authorization to rewrite the timeline. In the alternate timeline, Bridget was still a history professor at a university, Daniel was still trying to persuade people of his pyramid theories, Sam died in a space shuttle disaster, and Cameron did not exist because his grandfather was the Achilles captain.
When SG-1 went to find the alternate version of Bridget, they found her living a happy married life with the alternate Daniel. Seeing another version of Daniel shocked the alternate Bridget, while Cameron seemed slightly sad upon realizing that his existence in that universe had no importance to her. The alternate Bridget couldn’t shake the feeling of deja vu upon seeing SG-1, but she tried to ignore it and focus on the questions that they were asking her. They revealed that, in their timeline, she had passed a law called Bridget’s Law, which helped those who were victimized by the Goa’uld, but that it had been revoked in their timeline. They told alternate Bridget that if she came with them, she might be able to help them restore the timeline to the way it was supposed to be. Though a part of her believed them, she was insulted that they were trying to dictate her life for her and she kicked them out of her house, assuring them that she was quite happy with her life the way that it was.
Before Cameron left, though, she asked him if there was anything between them in the universe that he was from, to which he replied that they were best friends. Later that day, when her version of Daniel came home from work, she told him what happened, and they agreed to stay out of it. However, she could not shake the feeling of deja vu that resulted in SG-1’s visit. One year later, SG-1 successfully halted Ba'al, reset the timeline, and preserved Earth's Stargate Program. They knew that their actions had permanently altered the course of history, but that they had done so to protect the future.
2009: Bridget traveled to Atlantis several times to assist the Atlantis team with history matters. She and John developed a close sibling-like relationship and she would visit him when she could manage. She also attended the funeral of Atlantis leader Dr. Elizabeth Weir when she passed.
When the Atlantis team began to face the growing menace of the Wraith and the Replicators, Bridget was called in simply because they needed extra hands and she was the only one close enough and available. Coincidentally, this was shortly after her honeymoon with Cameron. Bridget and the Atlantis team found that the Replicators, a terrifying gang of self-replicating machines, had infiltrated the cosmos and were plotting to destroy Atlantis and her allies.
In the end, the team managed to save Atlantis, but the city was left in a precarious position and the future remained uncertain. Bridget said that she could not stay, but encouraged the Atlantis team to ask Daniel for help because he would be the best person for the job.
Bridget occasionally assisted Sam with history matters when Sam was working on the USS Hammond (a ship named after General Hammond), but continued to work mainly at Stargate Command as their resident military historian. At this point in time, Bridget was known as a civil rights legend, mainly for her legacy involving Bridget’s Law, and Bridget’s Law was used often for different issues that the residents of the USS Hammond encountered.
