First Day of School

Summer break flew by without me knowing. I was apprehensive about the start of the school year. The first day was approaching so fast. I couldn't concentrate on studying as well as I was used to, so I just spent the rest of my summer break doing what most people usually do on their summer vacations. Lazing out, reading books unrelated to studies or learning, watching stuff... I never felt less productive in my entire life. I couldn't wait for school to start and get constructive again. It went to the point that I screamed of happiness when I entered the school perimessis.

— SCHOOL! Here I am! I'm ready for every challenge you may give me! Bring it on!

I might have looked a little weird to the eyes of the other students present, but I didn't care.

— Well... You're more motivated to start the school year than usual.

My sister asserted. I got a little flustered. I didn't care how other people saw me, but it was a different story for my sister.

— Sorry... I got bored doing nothing productive during the second half of summer break.

— Mhm! Nerdy! What will you do when you don't need to go to school anymore?

It is true that I pretty much only did studies during my whole life and I absolutely have no idea what I would do after my school years are over... I still have time though. I don't even need to decide about the programme I should choose for college yet.

We entered the classroom. The arrangement of the room was somewhat unusual for a classroom. I wouldn't be surprised if there would be hidden features for this class. The girl I talked to in the library was there, already sitting at one of the desks.

— You!?

I exclaimed out of surprise.

— You already knew I was in high school, I don't understand why you're surprised.

— Yeah, I shouldn't have been surprised. I guess I just forgot it was a possibility.

— You know her?

My sister asked.

— Oh, I forgot you weren't there... Well, I do and I don't... I met her at the library the day we visited the school, but I don't know her name.

I answered. She ran over the said girl and flooded her with her words and presence.

— So, what's your name? My brother can be rude. Don't mind him, he's just socially... inexperienced.

The girl got a little confused. She responded.

— I'm Danielle. Uhm... You?

— I'm Yuiana, but people usually call me Yui. And that's my brother Ashitake.

— Now who's calling 'that' to who?

I remarked. Sarah walked in at that moment. Her hair was of a reddish orange color.

— Oh! You're already here.

She said to my sister.

— Now, that's a color I don't know the meaning of.

My sister talked to her as if they were good friends and had met a few more times during summer. Which they probably did, I just couldn't recall. She has her own life that I didn't know all the details of.

— What color is it?

Sarah said, unable to see her own hair.

— It's like a reddish-orange. I know orange means happy, but what does red mean?

— It usually means I'm excited or thrilled about something.

— My brother was thrilled about going to school as well.

— We're probably not excited for the same reasons.

I pointed out. To which my sister's friend replied.

— You're probably right. I'm excited because I'm gonna be able to meet more people and get confronted with new ideas.

— And I'm excited because I love to learn new things and I'll finally be able to finish highschool.

— Similar, but so different.

My sister remarked.

— We could say that about you and me too, dear sister.

— Whatever you say, darling brother.

— Why would you say that?!?

The conversation continued while other students entered the classroom and took place at one of the desks. Some, such as Sarah and my sister, didn't sit on the chair right away. Those two just put their things on a desk and went around trying to know everyone. One student almost arrived late, though he didn't run nor was he in a rush to get to class. The teacher was the one who arrived late. He came in last after the bell rang. He ran inside the classroom like a student late for school, even giving excuses as to why he was late. I was reading a book, so I didn't really see him come in.

— Sorry, I was in the science lab doing experiments and I didn't see the time passing.

I realized two things right away. First of all, he was the man that interrupted the school tour. Secondly, he must have been obsessed with science. Also, with some thought process, I wondered;

"Class starts at 8:30 AM, how early did he have to come to school in order to do an experiment in the lab this morning?"

Everyone took their seats except the teacher. He started talking while walking around.

— As it's the first class of the year, let's not explain what the program will be right away. We'll do that tomorrow. Today, let's just get acquaintanced. Let's present ourselves first.

He halfly sat on his desk.

— I'll start. Hi! I'm your teacher this year, the only one you'll get in highschool if you stay in this class. My name is Jackson Banister. As I'm your teacher, you should call me mister Banister, but as it sounds weird, you can call me mister Ban or, if you're impetuous enough, you can call me master. You thought I was gonna say Jackson, didn't you?

A student scoffed. I was surprised, it was another non-fiery. I didn't see him come in since I was reading a book and he hadn't grabbed my attention. I couldn't believe it. I never once had a non-fiery child as a classmate, but this year, in this class, we were three. The non-fiery boy replied.

— How stupid!

The teacher didn't acknowledge the insult.

— It seems like you want to present yourself next. Go ahead!

The student rolled his eyes and did the assignment he was told to do.

— Hello everyone, my name is Danny Fulton and I have only one passion... But I'll only tell you about it tomorrow.

He was obviously mocking the teacher by using childish manners and mimics. No one in the class laughed which seemed to make the said student uncomfortable. As if he was used to everyone laughing at his insults and mokeries. I think that if he had been in a normal class he might have gotten the reaction he wanted. However, we all had to challenge ourselves to get here and we wouldn't waste all our efforts on a meaningless joke. I'm sure some of us just didn't think that mocking someone was acceptable as a gag. The teacher ignored what he was implying as well.

— Great... Now, who wants to go next?

Sarah raised her arm with vigor.

— I do! I want to go next!

Mister Ban smiled at her energetic response.

— All right, then you may present yourself.

— Hi guys! I'm Sarah Walker. I'm glad to meet all of you and I can't wait to get to know you all better.

The teacher smiled again. Sarah had this effect on people. Making them comfortable no matter who they are and what happened before. One by one every student started presenting themselves. The whole day turned out to be exactly what mister Ban said it would be; getting acquainted with each other. We played games, we talked and did a lot of exercises to work on the cohesion of our class. I realized that Danny's only passion was probably girls. I hated him right away and didn't like the way he was looking at Sarah, my sister and the other girls of the class. I learned that the guy who came late was called Sam, I'm not even sure why he's here... He doesn't seem to be interested in school at all. There's also Sanna, I don't know why, but I'm getting a desert vibe from her. Her skin looks just like sand and there is something about her that just seems mystical. Her hair was like none others I've seen before. She was mesmerizing to my eyes. Then there was Michael. He didn't seem really interested in the games and exercise, but at least he was polite about it, contrary to Danny. I felt as if Micheal didn't want to get close to others for some reason. Yurik was a quiet boy. Just like Michael, he didn't seem very interested in the activities, but he still did his best. The last one I didn't know was called Valianne. She seemed to be a bright child, but she didn't show her emotions that much. I didn't learn anything more from Danielle. Well, she did almost tell me her whole life the first time I met her...

And so the first school day ended with me learning only about other people and opening myself a little. I was rather disappointed. But I managed to become closer to some of my classmates. Not to Danny though, I still hated him.
