My Starting World
We're here in the world of narrators. Did you think narrators in stories were just a part of you, of your imagination? Or maybe you thought we appeared out of nowhere? Well, if we did, you did as well. If we were created, so were you. Either way, it's not about you and your world we're talking about right now, but my world. I'm a narrator after all.
Let me tell you what a narrator is in my world. To begin with, we're normal living beings. I was about to say 'we're normal human beings', which would have been wrong. My appearance might be human, but the narrator next to me could look like a crow or a giraffe. In fact, I even once met a narrator with the appearance of a chair. So in my world, you should always look where you sit. I'm not even sure we can call ourselves 'living' beings. We're beings for sure, but are we alive? I'm not so sure.
If one day, you, a non-narrator, want to come into the narrator's world, you need to know a few things first. We're extremely welcoming, in general. Most of us are also... very objective. We're not judgemental people, especially if we go into one of your worlds. However, narrators won't like it if you start judging everything in our world, especially as you would be a guest. It's really just a generality. Some of us don't fit those criterias. The only thing we all have in common is that we can sense through different dimensions which make us able to narrate what's happening in that other world. We all have different levels of power. Some can only see, others can only hear... Some of us need to conceptualize the world we narrate with the little information we have. Though, I did hear one day that if a narrator narrates a nonexistent world, they would be the one who created it. I also heard they might disappear forever so I won't test my luck. I'll only narrate what I know, maybe a little less, just to be safe.
You might wonder what kind of narrator I am. Well that's easy, I'm one of the most powerful ones. I can hear, see, feel, even know what all the characters think and feel. I know pretty much everything in the world I see. I think I could even enter the world I narrate if I really wanted to. I could probably also decide which universe I see. I also know who narrated the last chapter. His name's Windy. He doesn't have a physical form. He's basically exactly the same as his name. He's not a very powerful narrator, but he can go wherever he wants without interfering with the story. Which makes him kind of powerful. He's the kind of narrator who prefers to guide people rather than tell them stories.
Did you know that all the story you ever heard or imagined was just a narrator whispering it in yours or the writer's mind? We wouldn't be narrators if we didn't like to tell tales to others. Though, people accaparate our work as their own, which is basically just telling the adventures of someone else in another world. They prevent anyone from using 'their' work as it was their creative process. I don't see what's wrong with sharing a little. There might be a reasoning behind it I just don't understand. Either way, I can't tell if it's good or bad. I guess it depends on your reasons. I know the writer whom I chose to tell this story, doesn't always like to share the credit. But it's only because she sees the writing world as a world of sharks who might benefit from other people's work behind their backs. I did say the story isn't the writer's work, but writing it is. So I do understand wanting to protect her words for these reasons. Though, I don't understand why people already popular with their writing don't want to share the story. I might learn the reason one day. However, with my personality, I always stay far from the greedy people with too much pride. It's probably one of the reasons why my narrations aren't that popular.
I mentioned earlier that I was a powerful narrator. However, I'm not perfect. I don't always know the right words to use and I can be very subjective from time to time. And, sometimes, I change subjects way too fast. Going from one point to another without showing the road or the process. I'll get better with time. I'm still young. Especially since narrators have the potential to live eternally. For example, Windy is like 560 or something. Probably much older too. I'm really a child compared to him.
Can narrators die? I don't know and I don't want to know. I'll live safely on my side of the multiverse where I believe I'll live eternally.
My name and my age? Nah, I won't tell you, it's irrelevant. Will it change your way of seeing my narration? Probably? That's what I thought. I don't want you to judge what I do with my name and my age. I'm just a narrator, keep it that way. Though, if you choose to make a movie out of me, I'd prefer you to use a youthful voice or a feminin one. There's way too much male narrator voice in movies. Also, narrators are usually good with imitating voices. It makes our narration better. So it's only normal that we can have whichever voice we want.
Oh! You might wonder now 'How come some people narrate their stories in the first person?'. It's a valid question. To which I will answer; some people don't like our way of explaining things so they change it. It also depends on the narrator, sometimes, they prefer to tell it as if they were one of the characters. Though, I need to mention, some narrators do want to live adventures themselves. So it might just be one of them, telling their own stories to the writers. Or the writer themself telling what really happened to them. Though, it is rather unusual to see that, because it would just be called 'non-fiction' then. Fiction is really just the reality of other worlds.
Did I already mention that we, narrators, don't speak to everyone. You first need to grab our attention for us to tell you our stories. And have a welcoming mind. The writer who transcribed my words has such a weird way of thinking and an eye-catching mind, it grabbed the attention of many narrators. So much so she doesn't know which story to transcribe first. She also might be a narrator herself or maybe a descendant of one. It could explain a lot. I'm lucky she finally decided to write my story. People might actually see my work now. I won't be an unknown narrator anymore! Thinking about it, it is true that some narrators prefer more subtle minds or darker ones. It depends on the narrator. What's most likely, you probably already had at least one narrator in your mind at some point in your life.
As you might have noticed, I won't narrate all this book. I like when narrators work together just like I appreciate when humans help each other. So this book will be full of different narrators. It goes well with both our personalities, me and the writer. Thinking about it, I might need a narrator's name. I want people to know my narrations, but they won't be able to tell that they are my narrations if they don't know how to call me. I thought about it and decided not to give myself a name. I'll just be happy to hear people talking about me without them knowing it's me they are referring to. I'm already feeling ecstatic just thinking about it. Hi, hi, hi, hi!
Well I guess I finished talking about my world. It's just a place where every creature does the same thing which is narrating events of all kinds. Nothing really important happens here other than that, trust me.
When you say it like that it sure seems like there are a lot of things happening here.
Hey! What did you just say? Seriously, there's nothing happening here. I'll prove it to you by telling you about my everyday life.
Here we go again... You know, you don't need to explain any of that to me. I'm a narrator too, remember? I'm standing right next to you.
Oh! You're just my younger sibling. I'll still explain it to the writer and readers in the next chapter as you raised suspicions. And it makes a good subject for a new chapter. They'll see, it's more than normal.
Yeah, yeah!
