The Life of a Narrator

I start my days with... Well, there aren't actually any days here. So I guess I just never end doing things. Either we dream, we acquire events from other worlds or we narrate. It's pretty much the only three things we can really do here.

Most of our universe is undefined. It just means that if we're not in a 'safe haven' or if we leave the one we were in, we seem to be floating in some sort of... Mind fluid? It's the best word I could come up with to describe it. It's color varies, and I could compare it to floating in space, not that I know what it feels to float in space... It's just what I imagine space would feel like. Though, I need to clarify that we're not 'swimming' in it. It's closer to the way spirits float around in some universe. I believe that our dimension is hidden in the minds. That's why I called it 'mind fluid', though I might be wrong. There are 'mind dust clouds' here and there. They are in all colours and shapes. When we enter them we find a 'safe haven'. I believe that those 'safe havens' are the minds of people.

There is a small town of narrators in the mind I chose. This mind. The town is surrounded by a forest. I know there are two small houses in that forest and a river is right next to one, but no narrators passed the river. Probably a mind blockage. Something prevents others from seeing what's behind it. You would probably call it subconsciousness.

One of the small houses is her home of memory where everything she experienced is stored. The other house, the one right next to the river, is her home of thoughts, it's where she thinks and where her thoughts are stored. It's in that house we go to narrate our stories to her. There's a chair, a mic, a stand and a desk in that house. Narrators can use either one of the four to narrate. In her mind, the chair is to make her feel the motion of the story, the mic to listen to what's happening. The stand to listen to the narrator and the desk to see everything in images. It's different in each mind, but it's like that in hers. We, narrators, can take all four or we can take just a select few. It's like this in her mind, but it's different for everyone.

I said earlier that we all have different shapes. It's true, however, we can't see narrators outside of the safe space of a mind. What I mean by that is that we can see our own body and the mind clouds, but nothing else. It's only inside a 'safe haven' or in a defined world that we can see each other's shapes.

Well, I think that's all for a life as a narrator and more detail about my world.

Are you serious?

Well, yeah! Why?

You forgot so many things.

Such as?

How does a narrator get created?

We just do. One day, we just appear out of nowhere.

Then why did you call me your younger sibling?

Because you were created after me and we are from the same family.

If we just appear from nowhere how can you say we're family?

In a narrator's perspective, we call 'family' the ones who have the same kind of shape. You're my sibling because we both look human and we're around the same age.

See? The people you're talking to wouldn't have known that.

Yeah... You're right. By the way, my sibling is using the stand while I'm using the desk and the mic, if you wanted to know. I'm not always realising what's surrounding me when I'm narrating, that's why I didn't realise they were there.

And why don't you call me she or he?

Because you're neither a boy nor a girl. I represent myself more as a girl, but narrators don't really have sex. We're not concrete beings, so the gender we give ourselves is the gender we have.

Are you sure you're not forgetting something?

I don't know, am I? Should I say that every narrator has their own limitations, either they are personal ones linked to their personality and values or fundamental ones linked to the limitations of their power and their appearances.

Well, that too. But I was more referring to what you said about some narrators being able to enter the worlds they are narrating.

It comes with the different powers they have. Some can even force a narrative into someone's head. It's just a perspective. Something we can or can't do. A skill of some sort if you must say.

Can we learn new skills?

I guess so... but I never tried to learn new skills.

The answer is no. We are born with the skills we have. We might discover a hidden skill later in life and develop the ones we have, but for a narrator, all our skills are given at birth.

Uhm! I didn't know.

You're a powerful narrator, but you're really clueless aren't you? Do you even know your existence's purpose?

That's mean...! And my existence's purpose is to be a narrator.

Oh boy! She doesn't know...

What is there to know, I am what I am there's nothing else to add.

What you are isn't your purpose in life.

It isn't?

No, every narrator has their own purposes. It's even said that when a narrator fulfills their purposes, they disappear.

What? We disappear?! How come? Why? Could I accidently fulfill my purpose and disappear without me knowing? I thought narrators were immortal...

You really didn't know that...? Well, in some ways, we are immortal. First, our existence can't be erased before our purpose is fulfilled, at least not to my knowledge. So, if a narrator enters a world, they can die in that plane of existence, however they will come back to the natural plane of existence of a narrator which means here. The place I believe you call 'the mind world'.

That's just one more reason for me to stay safe in this world. Why would anyone want to go in one of those dimensions where they can feel pain and experience death when they know far too well that they can and they will?

Sigh! Everyone is different and wants different things. Not to mention some narrators don't control their power well, they might end up in another universe without realizing it.

I should forget about my existence's purpose, that way I could live eternally. I should probably forget all about this conversation too.

It doesn't work like that. Especially since you don't know your purpose, you could fulfill it without realising it. You're bound to do it one day.

I don't... I don't accept that.

Some narrators, such as me, are 'born' with their purpose engraved in their consciousness. As for others, such as you, they need to find it themselves. However, even if they don't find it, they can still fulfill it. How you achieve it isn't important. Furthermore, you will achieve it one day.

If you say so... Then from now on, I won't do anything. I won't be able to achieve anything if I'm doing nothing. That way I can live forever.

Do whatever you want. It's not like you really can avoid your destiny.

Well, watch me! Oh, that's right... Since you have a purpose and you know it well, you will probably disappear before you can see me not achieving my own.

Yeah... I highly doubt it...

We'll see! Well now, I'll bury myself in the forest and never go out.

You know it won't wo... Oh! And she left! Does she realize that this mind will disappear from here when it's owner dies? Well, I don't think it really disappears, but I don't know more about what happens to it. So either she'll wake up floating in the 'mind fluid' or go into another dimension without wanting to. It's even possible she might end up disappearing trying to avoid disappearing. She's just delaying the inevitable. Or playing right into destiny's hand. As I'm the only one there, I guess it's my turn to narrate a story. She already started this and I'm the one who made her abandon it. I owe her at least a story. I just need to say a little disclaimer first. I tell my stories as if I was one of the characters, even though I didn't really live through it. I'm not good at telling who the main character is, so I'll leave you to believe what you want. It's not my place to tell. And I never know how long the stories I tell will last. Either way, here we go for a... little story. It could be kind of long though... Anyway, here we go!
