Chapter 25 | K. 596
Looking out into the distance, you could see nothing but the vast sea. You were assigned to the crow's nest for this afternoon, that's why you've been doing nothing but watching the horizon.
Just as you thought that nothing interesting was going to happen and that you could slack off, a small black dot seemed to approach the ship. You quickly grab the telescope to make sure it isn't an enemy ship of some sort, otherwise, you would have to inform the crew right away.
To your surprise, the black dot isn't a ship. It isn't even anything that should be out here on the sea. What you are seeing through your telescope, is a pile of metal lying on a white sheet, peacefully floating in your direction. You look down and spot Luffy suspiciously sneaking out of the kitchen.
"Luffy!" You call him and he looks up to you, startled. "There's something coming our way. Should we check it out?"
"Sure!" He jumps up, excited to hear that something is happening. You proceed to carefully climb down, but a pair of rubber arms wrap around you and for a moment you feel like you are flying. In the next second, you are standing next to Luffy. You smile at him playfully while fixing your hair.
"So, what is coming our way?" he asks.
"I saw a pile of metal floating on a sheet. Where was it?" You lean onto the railing and try to find it again, but you couldn't see it anywhere.
"WAHH! A silver sea monster!"
You turn around to see Usopp pointing and screaming at something to the right side of the ship. Taking a closer look, you realise the silver sea monster is actually the pile of metal you searched for.
"Ah, that's it," you say. "Luffy, that's what I saw earlier."
You both walk over to Usopp, who is still frantically pointing his finger at the pile. On the way, Luffy grabs his fishing rod. Seeing how the metal is only a few meters away, he tries to throw the hook and pull it closer.
Usopp gasps. "What are you doing?!"
You laugh at his expression. "Look closely, it's a pile of metal."
He calms down and laughs awkwardly. "Heh, of course I knew."
You turn your attention back to Luffy, who has swung out the fishing road multiple times and is still struggling to catch onto something with the hook. After another five tries, he finally managed to hook a ring at the end of a rod, sticking out of the pile.
"I did it!" Luffy yells. He proceeds to reel it in, yanking on the rod repeatedly.
"Call Zoro to help lift this thing out of the water," you tell Usopp.
ஐ
The commotion of you four trying to get the sheet and everything on top of it onto the ship was noticed by Nami. She came out of her map-drawing room, ready to scold you for being too noisy. Her nagging only gets worse when she sees that you seemingly picked up a bunch of trash from the ocean.
You tell her that it was your idea to check it out and she calms down after she thought about the possibility of finding something remotely valuable amongst it. Now you are all busy rummaging through the metal.
ஐ
The five of you cleared the top half of the pile. Usopp scavenged a lot of parts he could use for his nifty inventions and Nami had her hands full with examining every shiny piece while directing Zoro to dig further for her. On the other side, Luffy was playing around with what was once toys.
You move one broken machine out of the way after another. Nothing particularly sparks your interest, until you spot something black and white. A sense of familiarity washes over you and you quickly try to pull it out from beneath. Because you tug too hard at once, you fall backwards and tumble down the pile, when the piece you wanted came loose. You lie on the wooden deck, eyes closed, contemplating your poor choice of action. Your head hurt.
"Y/N, are you okay?" Nami asks concerned, coming to your side to help you up. Once she saw what you held in your arms, she gasps. "Oh my... look at what you found!"
You sit up and stare at the thing in your arms until you sight isn't blurry anymore. It really is what you thought it was.
A piano!
Well, not exactly a grand piano, that would have crushed me if I tried to lift it up. It's solely the piano keys on a board. Weird, I've never seen anything like this.
"You found a keyboard?" Usopp comes up to you.
"Is that what you call it?" you ask. "I thought I pulled out a piano, but it's only the keys of one..." You feel a bit disappointed.
"Hmm... you weren't completely wrong. It does work the same as a piano. The sound quality might be a bit different, though," he explains.
Your eyes widen and sparkle noticeable as you smile widely at him. "Really?" You are literally beaming with joy. "You can play a keyboard the same as a piano?"
Everyone looks at you with surprise. The reason being, it's the first time they see you showing so much interest and happiness over a certain topic. Usopp nods his head slowly and your smile stays on your face as you hug the scruffy piece.
"Oh! Does that mean you can play it?" Now it is Luffy who gets all excited.
You stop smiling and look at him, searching for an answer in your head. "I'm not sure if I can play it. But I feel like I was familiar with it," you hesitantly reply.
"We'll see about that. First I have to do some work on it." Usopp bends down, takes the keyboard out of your hands and heads for his factory, which is just a bundle of planks stapled on top of each other covered with a red cloth.
ஐ
"It's finished!" Usopp runs out the door with the now shiny keyboard over his head.
"Finally!" Luffy shouts and snatches it from a distance, placing it on the deck in front of where you are currently seated. "Play it Y/N!"
You gently move your fingers over the board and touch the single keys with your fingertips. After adjusting your hands on it, you don't even have to try to remember the piece you are about to play. It's as if your fingers move on their own to the only melody that remained in your memories.

You watch your fingers send life to the board decorated with keys of ivory white and smaller keys of charcoal black. The joyful and simple sounds make your heart flutter to the rhythm. Entranced, you observe your fingers dance delicately over the keys. At last, your fingers slow down and the last note is played.
The moment the tune of the keyboard stops, everyone falls silent.
You smile shyly and scratch your cheek. "Sorry, I can only perform this simple piece," you look up at the crew.
"That... was AMAZING!" Luffy shouts and plops down next to you, trying out the keyboard himself.
"That sounded really good! I didn't know you had a talent for this," Nami says.
You laugh dumbly. "What talent? I feel like I had a really hard time learning how to play the piano."
"That's still pretty impressive. It's not like everyone had a grand piano at home. Kaya had one, though," Usopp says, striking a proud pose.
"Why are you saying it like you owned one?" Zoro crosses his arms.
"Do you know who composed the piece you played?" Nami asks interestedly.
"How is she going to remember with that memory of h-"
"Wolfgang," you answer, cutting off Usopp's remark. Nami hits him on the head.
"Who's that?" Luffy asks.
"A musician from North Blue."
ஐ
The crew stayed on the deck until sunset, surrounding the keyboard and taking turns to play it. You all had a great time together. Everyone agreed on letting you take care of it since you found it first and because you are the only one who has the remote skill to play it. You decide to put it on top of the closet in Nami's and your room for the night.
