Chapter six - Sudoku

Chishiya

Days went by and I didn't see Niragi once. Because of that distance between us, I made myself crazy by overthinking the whole situation that happened. The tension that had been there the last weeks. This overthinking had to stop that evening though, because my visa ended soon so I had to clear my mind. I had to focus on the game.

The night fell over Tokyo and bright white lights led me the way to the nearest game. I always loved going by foot while listening to music on my IPod. It made my mind calm and clear. Sadly, I couldn't do that this time since Niragi ruined my earbuds during the previous game.

I arrived fourteenth, after five high school girls, six men in their twenties, two older women and an older man. I took a phone from the table and registered for the game. Right when I thought we were the only fourteen players tonight, I heard a salvo of gun shots through the cold air. Niragi and three other militants walked in and all took a phone. I pressed myself against the wall and hid my face in the hood of my jacket to stand out as little as possible.

'Registration closed. Welcome, players.

This game is called 'sudoku'.

Level: five of diamonds.

Players will have to follow a parcours and say the right number every time they step on a new floor tile.

Time limit: 30 minutes.

The game starts when the door in front of you opens.'

'Yes,' I thought to myself, 'a diamonds game really is my forté. This will be easy peasy. It will be way more difficult for the militants.'

Niragi

'Shit,' I thought to myself, 'this sucks. I was looking forward to killing people myself, not to let them be killed by their own stupidity. I am not in the mood to think a lot tonight. I like physical games way better.'

But then I saw our hope: he stood in the shadow of the corner of the room. Chishiya. I put the brightest smile on my face and casually walked towards him. 'He, Chishiya. How are you?' I smirked quietly.

'Niragi,' he sighed and he rolled his eyes. 'I know you are only talking to me because you know I am smarter.'

I put on a surprised look. 'Whaaaat? Naaah... I just want to play this game with you, loser! I think we make a great team together, just like last time!' I laughed.

The door opened. Chishiya turned his back at me and walked in. I gave my team a look and beckoned them to follow me from a distance.

Chishiya

I looked at the play field for a moment. Some tiles had numbers on them, but most didn't and I mentally connected a path to walk on. 'Nine,' I said and I stepped on a tile. Nothing happened. I felt Niragi behind me but didn't turn to see him. 'Three,' I said on a neutral tone and stepped on the next one.

'Nine!' I heard Niragi yell and he took a big step in my direction. Our bodies nearly touched.

I sighed and ignored him. I looked down for a moment and whispered 'five' while stepping on the tile left of me.

'Three! What did you say?!' Niragi yelled in my ear.

'You are annoying,' I said.

Niragi gave me a kinda frightened look. It was the first time I saw something else than that mask of confidence he was always wearing.
I raised my eyebrows and smirked at him.

I fastly whispered the next three numbers to bridge the way to the first numbered tile and looked to Niragi. 'Do you even know how a sudok...' a loud bang interrupted me. I looked in the direction of the noise and was able to see one of the boys left leg fall on the ground a couple of metres from the rest of his lifeless body. It was deadly silent for five seconds before the school girls started screaming and running like idiots. The explosions followed one after the other until the nine remaining players all came to a stop. They looked frightened.

I grinned and whispered my way to the next numbered tile.

'Players, there are 15 minutes remaining.'

When I turned around, I saw Niragi still standing on the same spot. He looked at his rifle.

'Hm, that won't save you this time,' I noticed.

He pouted at me with scared eyes. I rolled with mine. 'Please. There don't need to be more deaths than there already are by now. I know you are a cold person most of the time, but...' he yelled at me.

I decided to show him my good side for once. Maybe he would leave me alone, then. 'People are not always what you think they are. Wait, I'll come... But only this time,' I promised.

The next eleven minutes, I led Niragi and his teammates to the other side of the play field. The only people that survived were us, the older ones and one school girl.

'You owe me,' I told Niragi when we exited the building. He laughed hysterically. Like he was laughing with the people that died. Pathetic. Luckily for us, we had five more days on our visum. Five more days to wear out in this twisted world.

Niragi

I was so happy Chishiya teamed up with us to finish this game. On the other hand, I somehow knew he wouldn't let me die. Even though we hated each other, we had become attached to each other in my eyes. That really called for a party! So that was exacly what I did as soon as I arrived back at the Beach.

Just like a lot of previous nights since I came here, I danced in the swimming pool, drank some vodka's, kissed some random girls I don't remember, drank some more vodka's and laid myself down on one of the beach beds to celebrate my victory. Like you can imagine, I became very drunk. In that drunk state, I remembered what Chishiya said to me: 'you owe me.'
Since I don't like being indebted to anyone, I went upstairs to confront Chishiya in his room.

I pushed his door a bit open and saw that it was dark. I quietly entered and found him sleeping on his bed. Since I was drunk, 'quietly' wasn't actually that quiet, and I stumbled over the carpet. He opened his eyes in a flash and was immediatly wary.

'Wh... What are you doing here?' he asked with a rasping voice. 'It is fucking three am.'

I pouted at him: 'sorry, Chishiyaaaa. But since you said I owed you, I was thinking about wiping away the dept immediately. Hue hue...' I approached him and he jumped up, his back against the head of his bed.

'I... I d... don't think you can give me anything I want right now,' he stuttered. Than his look hardened, like he remembered something. 'I want you to leave and I don't want to ever see you again in my room.'

'Why not? Are you afraid I'd do something to you like I did to that girl the other day? Do you think I didn't see you? Besides, it's your own fault! After our... Meeting in your bathroom earlier, I was sooooo horny I had to take the load off somewhere! Ha ha ha!' I smirked at him.

But I stopped laughing as soon as I saw his frustrated face. 'What? Do you really think I did something bad to her?' I asked with a grin on my face.

'I saw it with my own eyes...' he whispered.

'I just wanted to scare her so she would know her place. After showing her my... my...' The light feeling in my head due to the alcohol went away in a finger snap. Even though I normally didn't mince words, I couldn't say it this time. 'You know... I stopped and told her to know her place. To scare her,' I finished my sentence.

Chishiya sat in silence. After three minutes, he said: 'you don't need to explain yourself to me. I already know you are not more than a pathetic bully. Now leave me alone. You are drunk.'

I became silent. If he ever knew... But he was right. I already said too much with my drunk tongue. I walked through the door. Just before closing it, I whispered to him: 'People aren't always what you think they are.'
