xl. dig it up
"Ladies and gentlemen...you've been waiting a long time, but we're finally here. Dojos from all across the Valley have been training for a year for their shot at glory. You ready to meet them?"
Molly felt her stomach churn at the audience roaring. She took a deep breath and bounced on her toes to try and relieve her nerves. All of the dojos waited in two hallways to make their entrance and luckily, Eagle Fang was in the same hallway as Miyagi-Do.
As Daryl announced Miyagi-Do, Molly's old team started to walk out, all of them smiling at Molly as they passed her. When Eli started to walk past Molly, he gave her a small smile, noticing her panic. "Good luck out there, Molls." He said and Molly stopped bouncing.
She gulped, nodding her head as she started to catch her breath. "Good luck, Eli." She said back.
The day after prom, Eli stayed with Molly all day and they just hung out and watched movies. Molly accidentally called him Eli instead of Hawk and when she started to apologize, he said it was okay and if she wanted, she could call him whatever she'd like; Hawk or Eli. So Molly started calling him Eli again.
Eli blushed at the name, still getting used to Molly calling him Eli again. He gave her one more quick smile before walking out with the rest of Miyagi-Do.
Miguel watched the small exchange with an amused smile and he had to hold back a laugh when he saw Molly cover her face to hide her smile when Eli walked away.
Once he was sure none of Miyagi-Do could hear him, he leaned closer to Molly's ear. "Oh my god... you like Hawk again."
Molly spun around so fast, Miguel flinched. Her eyes were wide and her mouth hung open as she shook her head. "No, I don't! I really d..." Her words slowed as Miguel raised his eyebrows. Molly groaned, leaning back against the wall and covering her face.
"Don't know." She muttered, finishing her sentence, her words muffled by her hands. Molly dropped her hands and turned her head to face Miguel even though she didn't look him in the eyes. "I don't know after prom..."
Miguel's eyes could've popped out of his head. He moved to stand in front of Molly, shaking his head crazily. "After prom?! What happened after prom?" He whisper yelled. Before Molly could answer him—which she really didn't want to—Daryl's voice echoed from the loud speakers.
"And finally... this dojo is making their All Valley debut, though you'll recognize a few familiar faces. Every year, a new dojo rises up the ranks. Does this newcomer have what it takes to win it all? Please welcome Eagle Fang Karate, led by Sensei Johnny Lawrence and defending champion Miguel Diaz!"
The crowd cheered as Eagle Fang started to run into the arena, Johnny leading them. They took their spot right beside Miyagi-Do and as much as Molly wanted to look to the team and smile, she kept her eyes on Daryl.
"At the end of the day, only one of these dojos can be crowned Grand Champion. Welcome to the 51st annual All Valley Under-18 Karate Tournament!" Daryl finished and the audience roared in applause.
Johnny clapped his hands together, drawing his students' attention. "Eagle Fangs, listen up!" He yelled. The team slowly circled around him as he continued, his eyes landing on Miguel, Molly, and Bert. "Some of you have been here before, and for some of you, it's your first karate tournament." He glanced around at the rest of the team.
"Remember what's at stake. If Cobra Kai wins, our dojo closes for good. That means no more Eagle Fang. We're not gonna let that happen, are we?" Johnny asked, and Eagle Fang immediately shook their heads.
"No, Sensei!"
"We have something that Cobra Kai doesn't..." Johnny said, pausing. His eyes moved to Miguel, and he nodded in his direction. "We have a reigning champion."
Molly grinned, shaking Miguel's shoulders excitedly as Miguel blushed at the attention. Johnny turned to Molly next, raising his hand to gesture at her. "And Preston's freakishly strong fists." He added, making Molly chuckle.
"Let's get out there and show Cobra Kai what we're made of. Are you ready?" Johnny yelled.
"Yes, Sensei!"
...
The skills competition was up first, and Molly was the opening act for all the dojos. She displayed a series of punches, her teammates lined up on stage with her, holding up boards as she broke each one.
Even though Molly performed amazingly, Eagle Fang didn't take the win. During his turn, Mitch accidentally lost control of his bo staff, sending it flying into the judges' stand, making them lose points and Cobra Kai gain.
By the end of the skills event, Eagle Fang was in sixth place. Johnny glared up at the scoreboard with a disgusted expression before turning back to his students.
"How the hell are we in sixth place?" He yelled. Molly sighed, taking a step towards her sensei, the rest of her team now behind her. "The skills events are weighed differently. Gold medals are ten points, silver–"
"I don't give a shit about the math. What do we need to beat Cobra Kai?" Johnny snapped, cutting her off.
Molly glared, her jaw clenching in frustration, but before she could reply, Devon piped up from behind her. "Uh, math." Devon said, defending Molly.
Johnny glanced between the two girls, his face twisting with an annoyed expression. "God, it's like having two Prestons." He muttered. Molly rolled her eyes, holding back a smile at his words.
"To catch up, we need to win as many matches in the qualifying rounds as possible." Molly explained, and Devon nodded in agreement.
"The further we get, the tighter the vice around Cobra Kai's metaphorical balls." Devon added and Johnny's face lit up as he finally caught on, pointing between the two of them with a slow nod.
"Okay. Good. Now you're speaking my language."
...
Molly didn't know how it went by so fast, but in no time, she had made it to the quarterfinals.
She stood on stage with Johnny, Devon and Miguel. Beside the three of them, the other people who made it to the quarterfinals were Eli, Sam, Demetri, Tory, Robby, Kenny, Piper, Kyler, and three other girls and two other boys.
Molly couldn't wipe the smile from her face. She was practically bouncing in excitement to the point where Johnny had to lean toward her ear and whisper an angry, "Stop it, Preston!"
Daryl's voice echoed across the arena. "All right, folks. We've witnessed some great fighting today. But you ain't seen nothing yet because we have arrived at the quarterfinals!" Molly blinked in shock at how loud the audience was.
She looked through the crowd, her eyes finding Moon, who enthusiastically waved at her when they locked eyes, and her moms. Molly was so happy her moms were able to make it to this year's All Valley. When Keira and Janice saw their daughter, they cheered so loud, Molly was sure she could pinpoint their voices over others.
"Of the eight boys and eight girls on this stage, one of each will be named All Valley champion. And then we'll tally all the points to determine which dojo has earned the title of Grand Champion. And since the points get higher in each round... " Daryl stopped his explanation to chuckle, his head dipping a little.
Molly gave the man an odd look, leaning toward Miguel beside her. "This guy gets really into this..." She muttered, making Miguel drop his head to hide his laugh.
Daryl looked back up to the audience, still chuckling like an evil villain. "It's still any dojo's game!"
Tory and Devon were up first, and Devon was holding herself up in the fight really well. It was tied 1 to 1 when Tory started to back Devon up to the edge of the mat. Devon blocked every punch Tory sent her way and backed up every time Tory threw a punch.
Devon took another step, this time out of bounds, and seconds later, Tory finally hit Devon in the chest.
"Point!" The referee screamed and Molly's entire face scrunched, looking at the referee like he was crazy.
"Wait, what?" Molly whispered, looking to Miguel beside her, who looked just as confused as she felt before turning to Johnny on the other side of her, the man looking for angry than confused.
"Come on, ref! She was out of bounds! Where are your eyes?" Johnny yelled at the man, but the referee just shrugged, ignoring Johnny and everyone else's confusion.
Devon looked back to Eagle Fang, specifically Molly, her eyes wide and her hands shaking. Molly nodded, giving her a thumbs up. "You've got this." She mouthed and Devon nodded, turning back to the fight.
Although she was still a little thrown off, Devon fought as hard as she could against Tory. She lasted for around a minute, blocking Tory's punches and even getting in a few of her own. But in the end, Tory's fist got past Devon's blocking, and she punched her right in the stomach.
"Point! Winner!" The referee yelled and Devon slumped, letting out a tired breath. All of Eagle Fang waited for her at the edge of the mat and when she jumped down, Molly opened her arms to pull the younger girl into her side.
"It's all right. You did great today." Molly reassured, rubbing her hand up and down Devon's arm while Johnny nodded in agreement with Molly. "She's been at this longer than you. Plus, she's older than you. There's no reason to feel bad." Johnny said and Devon looked up at Johnny, her eyebrows furrowed and her nose scrunched.
"Oh, I don't feel bad. I only trained for six weeks." Devon said before she laughed, looking around at all of the other girls. "I'm gonna be stomping all of these weak ass bitches next year." Devon laughed out. She turned to Molly and playfully nudged her in the ribs, making Molly side eye the girl.
"Watch it..." Molly whispered, joking, but also serious about Devon's threat. Devon laughed, wrapping her arms around Molly for a quick hug before she got pulled away by Bert.
"Next up, we have Molly Preston of Eagle Fang fighting Piper Elswith of Cobra Kai." Daryl announced from the sidelines, and Molly shook her hands by her sides, taking a deep breath. Miguel turned to her with furrowed brows, his head tilting in confusion. "Hey, what are you so worried about? You can take her!"
Molly looked to Miguel and turned back to the mat, licking her lips. "Yeah..." She muttered, nodding her head. "Yeah, I've got this."
As she hopped onto the stage, Piper doing the same on the other side, Miguel patted Molly on the back, muttering a small, "you've got this" that made Molly feel a bit better.
After they both bowed and got into their positions, the ref looked back and forth between the two girls and threw his hand down. "Fight!"
Piper immediately ran towards Molly, sending as many punches as she could her way but Molly blocked every single one. Although she would be fine playing defense the whole fight, Molly didn't want to do that. She raised her leg to kick Piper in the chest but Piper had her hands up, blocking it.
Before Molly could readjust herself for her next move, Piper kicked her on her side. "Point!" The ref yelled as Molly shut her eyes in pain, holding back grabbing her side in pain.
Slowly, she and Piper got back into their positions and Piper cockily smirked at Molly. "Robby said you left Cobra Kai for Miyagi-Do..." Piper started and Molly tensed up. There was an obnoxious smile on Piper's face that was pissing Molly off. "Maybe you should've never left because now, you have nothing now."
Piper giggled at Molly's obvious anger, her jaw clenched and her nostrils flaring. When Piper turned around and walked back to her side of the mat, Molly glared at her, slowly walking back to her spot.
They got into fighting positions, waiting for the referee to give an all clear and as soon as the next round started, Molly ran at Piper, kicking and punching. Molly could've sworn she heard Piper gasp as she nervously blocked every hit before Molly swept Piper's legs out from under her.
When Piper hit the ground, Molly kicked the girl in the chest to secure her point.
"Point! Preston!" The referee screamed and Molly could hear her team cheer for her from the sidelines.
Molly was tempted to stick her arm out to help Piper up, but she didn't like that the girl felt the need to trash talk, and bring her ex into it. Molly instead, glared down at the girl. "You've been in karate for what? Five weeks? Maybe don't try and pick on someone that can take you down in seconds."
Molly walked back to her side of the mat and smiled when she saw Piper worriedly look back at Silver and Kreese before walking up to her and the ref. When the round started, Molly ran towards Piper. Piper went to throw a punch to Molly but she caught her fist and punched Piper in the stomach.
"Point Preston!" The referee yelled, lifting his hand on Molly's side. Piper visibly gulped, readjusting her gi before getting back in her fighting position.
"Fight!"
Piper didn't even have time to take a step forward before Molly kicked her across the face, sending her to the floor.
She could hear a couple gasps around her. Molly's eyes lifted from Piper and to Cobra Kai across from her. Silver glared at her while Kreese clenched his jaw. Molly's eyes moved to the students. Kyler, Doug, and Edwin weren't there, but Molly didn't think much of it. Her eyes were glued on Tory and Robby standing directly in front of her.
The two looked at Molly with wide eyes, Robby's mouth falling open just barely.
"Winner!" The referee screamed as he walked towards Molly, lifting her arm in the air. When the ref dropped her arm, Molly glared at Robby and Tory, her jaw clenching before Daryl chuckled from the sidelines.
"And just like that, Molly Preston is making it to the semi-finals!" He screamed as Molly turned around and walked back to her team.
As Molly turned around and walked back to her team, she saw Kyler, Doug, and Edwin circling Eli, big smirks on their faces as Eli looked down the ground.
Molly completely changed her direction, walking towards the four of them instead of her team. Kyler noticed Molly walking over and snickered. He turned back to Eli and pointed to his own lip. "See ya, Lip." He taunted, him and his goons walking away and leaving Eli alone.
As soon as they were gone, Molly walked towards Eli, putting a hand on his shoulder. "Ignore him. He's still just a stupid bully." Molly muttered, looking at Kyler from behind Eli and scoffing.
Eli shrugged, his eyes staying on the ground. "I don't know if I'll be able to fight him as Eli though." He muttered, his voice so quiet, Molly almost didn't hear him.
Molly's head tilted and she sighed. Her hand moved from Eli's shoulder and her fingertips grazed his. "You're not defined by your haircut. Like I told you the other day, Eli was still always in you while you were Hawk and Hawk is still in you now even though you don't have the hair." Molly said, pointing up to Eli's buzz.
She looked back into Eli's eyes and smiled when she saw him already looking at him.
Molly felt Eli's fingertips touch the side of her hand again so she reached forward, grabbing his hand. "You still have that energy and confidence. You just got dig it up." Molly said, leaning forward so only he could hear her.
Eli stared at Molly, his cheeks starting to pink up.
"Next up in the quarterfinals, it's Kyler Park of Cobra Kai versus Eli Moskowitz of Miyagi-Do." Daryl yelled, making Molly look away from Eli and to the mat. She snickered at how confident Kyler looked.
She turned back to Eli and her shoulders deflated when she watched him stare at Kyler nervously. Molly knew that Hawk was in there somewhere, Eli just couldn't bring him out alone.
An idea popped into Molly's head and even though she felt her stomach twist a little, Molly leaned forward and pressed her lips to his cheek.
When Molly pulled away, Eli's head whipped toward her, their noses almost touching, and she smiled, watching his confidence return.
"Looks like you've got a fight to win." She muttered, and Eli just continued to stare at her.
Molly licked her lips, her eyes moving down to his lips for just a second before she looked back into Eli's eyes, smirking as she watched his confidence slowly coming back to him.
"Kick his ass for me, will you? I'm kinda pissed I can't." She asked, a joking smile on her face.
Hawks jaw clenched, his famous smirk growing on his face as he nodded. Molly smiled, squeezing Hawk's hand one more time before letting go and walking away.
As she walked towards her team, Miguel's eyes were already on her, a playful smirk on his face.
"And what was that?" Miguel taunted and Molly bit back a smile, rolling her eyes. She stood beside him, her body facing the stage but her head turning back to Hawk. "Just giving him some confidence." She muttered, no longer able to hide her smile when she saw Hawk jump onto the mat.
Kyler didn't even stand a chance. Hawk won his fight with him 3 to 0.
Molly yelled, grabbing Miguel's shoulders in happiness. Eli's eyes widened, a big smile taking over his face. The referee walked towards him, grabbing his wrist and raising it in the air. "Winner!"
When he let go of Eli's hand, Eli turned to walk back toward his team, but his eyes found Molly's. He wanted to run up to her, to hug her, to thank her for being the one to get him his confidence back.
But he didn't. The whole day, Mr. LaRusso had been angry at Johnny and angry at Eagle Fang. He made a strict rule to the Miyadi-Do's: don't go up to the Eagle Fangs during the competition.
So, Eli instead smiled at Molly, mouthing a small "thank you" to her. Molly playfully rolled her eyes and waved her hand around as if it were nothing. Eli blushed, his head dipping as he walked back to his team.
...
They were on an intermission, giving the fighters chances to rest and get a break. The semifinals were about to start and the eight left were Miguel, Demetri, Eli, Robby, Tory, Molly, Sam, and a girl from Topanga Karate.
"Well, if it isn't Miss Semifinals!" Molly heard from behind her and with a huge smile on her face, Molly turned around to face Eli. He was gonna follow Daniel's rule, but he had just seen him talking to Johnny, If he was able to talk to Eagle Fangs, then so was Hawk.
Molly ran towards Eli jumping into his arms as she let out a quiet but excited squeal. Eli wrapped his arms tightly around Molly's waist, feeling his neck and cheeks burn at the action. "I know! Oh my God, this feels amazing!" Molly rambled into his shoulder.
She pulled away from the hug, not far enough to where they had to let go of each other; Molly's arms were still around Eli's neck and his arms were still around her waist. Eli could see Molly's brain going a mile minute as her eyebrows furrowed looking at him. "Is this how you felt last year?"
Eli chuckled, tracing her hip with his thumb. "Breathe, Molly." He whispered quietly and Molly closed her eyes, taking a sarcastically long breath in. When she exhaled, Molly opened her eyes and her smile came right back as she shook Eli's shoulders in excitement. "Oh my God!" She quietly cheered so only he and her could hear.
"And now, our first semifinal match will be Miguel Diaz of Eagle Fang versus Eli Moskowitz of Miyagi-Do." Daryl's voice echoed throughout the arena. Molly looked to the stage, watching as the man turn to Eli and Miguel, gesturing them to the stage.
Molly turned back to Eli and smiled, her entire demeanor a little calmer now. "Okay, good luck!" Molly said, letting go of Eli to run back to her team to wish Miguel luck.
Eli watched Molly go with a small frown, missing her arms around him. He licked his lips as he watched her hug Miguel and say some words of encouragement before he slowly walked back towards Miyagi-Do.
"All right, you can do this. You've beaten Hawk before. Remember that killer instinct. Take his ass out." Johnny said, making Molly and Miguel's faces scrunch.
"What?" Molly asked even though Johnny's words of encouragement weren't for her. Miguel looked back and forth between Molly and Johnny, glad Molly was as confused as him. "Take his ass out? Hawk is my friend." Miguel said and Johnny shook his head.
"He's fighting for LaRusso. He picked his side." Johnny spat as if he no longer cared for his other student. He pointed at Eli before he turned back to Miguel and tilted his head. "Whose side are you on?"
Miguel shook his head almost instantly. "Yours." He answered and Johnny raised his eyebrows. "Are you sure? Hawk may be your friend, but if you wanna win this, you have to beat him."
Miguel took a small step back, shaking his head in disappointment at his senseis words. "Whose side are you on?" He whispered.
Johnny squinted at Miguel's question. He went to open his mouth but before he could, the referee called the two boys up. "Gentlemen, take your positions."
Miguel turned around, going to head towards the mat, but Johnny grabbed Miguel's shoulder, stopping him. "I'm on your side, Diaz. Always." Johnny said, but Miguel ignored him, shaking himself out of the mans grasp and continuing to walk towards the mat.
Just before he could step onto the mat, Molly stuck her arm out and gave Miguel a small smile.
"Hey, good luck out there. You've got this." Molly whispered. Miguel looked down at Molly, nodding his head as a silent thank you before he got onto the mat and met Eli and the referee in the middle.
Molly could see the two boys share a few words before doing their handshake and getting into position.
"Fight!" The referee yelled and Miguel ran towards Eli, sending him as many punches as he could. Eli blocked all of Miguel's punches and even tried to get a few kicks in himself but Miguel blocked those too.
At the same time, the two boys jumped into the air, kicking each other but they blocked each other and fell to the ground. "No point, that's a block. Continue!" The ref yelled. Miguel and Eli quickly got back up, getting back into position.
"Let's go, Diaz!" Johnny screamed. Miguel turned to him, nodding. He turned back to Eli and Molly's eyes widened as Miguel jumped in the air, going to kick Eli in the face with a flying tornado kick.
"Son of a bitch is stealing my move." She whispered. Johnny had been teaching the two of them privately how to do the flying tornado kick. Molly had gotten it down pretty quickly and was planning on using it today, but Miguel seemed to have the same idea.
Just as he was about to complete the move, he lost his balance, falling onto his back. Miguel let out a loud scream and Molly's her sank to her stomach.
She felt queasy, flashbacks of the school fight spiraling in her mind. Her chest felt tight and the voices around her muffled as her attention stayed on only Miguel.
For a second, Molly could've sworn she was back at school, back at the fight, back in Aisha's arms as she watched Miguel's unmoving body on the staircase.
She finally blinked and she noticed Johnny, Eli, the referee and a medic circle the boy on the floor. Molly couldn't see Miguel's face and it made her sick to her stomach.
She felt someone stand beside her and grab her hand. Molly turned her head and squeezed the hand holding hers once she realized it was a terrified Sam standing beside her.
Molly turned back to Miguel and could finally somewhat see his face. His entire face was scrunched in pain as he held onto his back before he screamed.
"Sensei!"
