xlviii. best friend
Word got out that Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang was going to compete with Cobra Kai for a spot in the Sekai Takai, a world renowned karate competition and it didn't take long for all of the students to start watching past competition clips and work their absolute hardest to train.
Sam insisted Molly and Demetri come to Miyagi-Do before everyone else to train and after spending an hour teaching the two of them some partner techniques, Sam urged Molly and Demetri onto the balance board in the middle of the koi pond and Molly had never been more grateful this was all happening in summer because that meant it was dangerously hot outside whenever she fell into the cold water.
Molly had fallen in a handful of times–some of them being her fault and most of them being because of Demetri.
After the eighth time of falling in, Molly glared up at Sam, the girl blurry despite being a few feet in front of her, but Molly was wearing mascara so she couldn't wipe her eyes.
"Sam, why are we doing this?" Molly asked, starting to get a little out of breath.
Sam sighed, rolling her eyes since this was now the tenth time either Molly or Demetri complained about the exercise. "We need to show the Sekai Taikai judges that we can do a lot more than Cobra Kai can." She explained before she pointed to the balance board floating between Molly and Demetri. "Like fighting on the balance board. It won't be very impressive if only Robby and I can do it."
Molly shook her head, pressing her hands on the ground in front of her to push herself out of the water. Just before she could, Sam pointed at her, silently telling her not to.
Molly rolled her eyes, dropping her hands. "So partner me up with Eli or Miguel or literally anyone else! You put me with a boy who gets knocked over by wind." Molly complained, throwing her arm out to point at Demetri behind her.
As she went over the words she had just said in her head, Molly turned to face Demetri, tilting her head apologetically. "No offense, Dem. You know I love you." She said and Demetri shrugged, walking around the balance board so he was beside Molly.
"None taken. I was just about to say the same thing... in nicer form of course."
Now that Molly and Demetri were right in front of her, it was harder for Sam to dodge their constant comments. She sighed, looking down at her two friends as she crossed her arms over her chest.
"I put you two together because it's all based on trust and connection. Sure, you're dating Eli, but you two are best friends." Sam explained. At the same time, Molly and Demetri's face scrunched.
"Miguel's my best friend."
"Eli's my best friend."
Molly and Demetri snapped their heads to face one another, both of them hurt by what the the other said.
"I'm not your best friend?!" They screamed at the same time, Molly pointing to her own chest and Demetri taking a step away from Molly to glare at her.
Sam rolled her eyes again and tiredly shook her head. "My work here is done." She muttered under her breath as Molly and Demetri continued to bicker in the water.
Molly noticed Demetri look away from her and to the entrance of the dojo. She scoffed, shoving Demetri by his shoulders. "Oh, what? Now you're not gonna look at me because I'm not your best friend?" Molly asked and Demetri, keeping his eyes on whatever caught his attention, took a step closer to Molly and grasped both of her shoulders.
"I think as your best friend, you're gonna wanna turn around." Demetri whispered, finally looking to Molly before his eyes turned back to something behind Molly.
Molly and Sam turned around to see what Demetri was looking at Molly could've sworn she was seeing things because there was no way Miguel, Robby, and Eli were all walking into the dojo together laughing with big smiles on their faces.
Sam looked just as shocked as Molly. Without turning away from the three–part of her worried that if she did, the boys would abruptly start fighting again–Sam leaned toward Molly, who was still in the koi pond with Demetri.
"How are you feeling?" Sam asked and Molly blinked, thinking maybe the image in front of her would disappear, but it didn't. Slowly, her jaw dropped. "I feel like I have a concussion and I'm seeing things." Molly whispered.
Johnny, Daniel, and Chozen walked into the backyard and Daniel smiled seeing everyone be so civil with each other.
"All right, all right. Let's not get ahead of ourselves." He announced, making everyone turn to him. As he skimmed his eyes over the students standing in front of him, Daniel squinted when he realized Sam, Molly, and Demetri weren't there.
He looked around the dojo and when he finally saw the three by the koi pond—two of them in it—Daniel sighed. "You three, get over here!" He yelled and Molly and Demetri quickly climbed out of the koi pond to join the rest of their team.
"Remember, Cobra Kai is gonna do everything they can to get a spot. And if they win this time, kids all over the world are gonna have to deal with the same crap you guys have gone through." Daniel explained as the three slowly joined the huddle of teens. Molly made a beeline to Eli, who immediately pulled her into his side, not even caring that she was soaked.
"But if we win, we can show the world how to stop them." Johnny said and Chozen nodded in agreement on the other side of him. "First you must prove you can compete with best."
"To do that, you have to be better than the best which is why we're gonna kick your asses into high gear." Johnny said, and Molly nervously licked her lips, her hands moving to wrap around herself.
...
After using the rest of the week to prepare for the Sekai Takai judges, the rival teams were told that to earn a spot in the competition, they would have to fight each other in both a female match and a male match.
Considering there were only two girls in Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang, the three senseis decided Molly should be the one to fight in the girls' match since she was the runner-up for the All Valley.
But Molly didn't want to do.
She couldn't do it.
When Daniel pulled Molly inside the home connected to Miyagi-Do and told her she'd be the one to fight for her team, Molly felt her stomach churn and she had to sit on her hands to stop the from wrapping around her ribs.
She didn't listen to Daniel after that, his words were muffled in Molly's ears until he gently reached out and rubbed her shoulder before walking out of the dojo.
Finally out of her trance, Molly watched and waited until Daniel was outside before she pulled her phone out of her pocket. Her hands shook as she opened her phone and searched for Sam's contact. It took a couple rings for Sam to answer, but as soon as Molly heard her voice, she knew she had to do this.
"Hey, Molls! What's up?"Sam asked and even though Molly couldn't see Sam's face, Molly knew she was smiling. Molly felt a tightness form in her chest and she ran her hand across her it to try and relieve the feeling.
"Hey, um... I just got done talking to your dad, he gave me the spot in the fight tomorrow." Molly said and Sam immediately smiled at the news.
"Molly, that's great!" Sam gushed and Molly winced to herself, her entire face scrunching. She looked around the indoor dojo for somewhere to sit and opted on just moving to the floor.
"And I want you to have it." Molly blurted as she sat criss cross on the floor.
It was quiet on the line for a second and Molly thought Sam had accidentally hung up or something. As she pulled the phone away from her ear to make sure she was still on the phone, Sam's yelped.
"What? No, Molly... You got runner up. Not me." Sam said and Molly instantly brought her phone back to her ear. Molly sighed, falling back so she was lying down on the floor. "Sam, I can't do it." She breathed out, her voice wavering as she spoke.
Sam frowned, really thinking about Molly's words. Since prom, Sam has finally seen the trauma Tory had on Molly. This wasn't just some feud because Tory was a partial reason to why Molly and Robby broke up, this was real life. Tory hurt Molly—scarred her and Sam knew that.
She sighed, and Molly tensed up, waiting for her answer.
"Look, I'm not in your head, but I do know what you're feeling." Sam admitted, her voice softer. Molly gulped as Sam paused. She heard the girl take a deep breath before she spoke again. "If you really don't think you can do this fight, I'll do it."
Molly felt a weight lift off her shoulders and she let out a breath she didn't even know she was holding in. "Thank you." Molly breathed out, slowly starting to feel the churning in her stomach ease.
"Of course." Sam said before the two girls hung up.
Molly rested in phone on her chest and stared up at the ceiling above her. When someone knocked on the dojo doors, Molly turned her head just as they opened.
Johnny peaked his head in, smiling when he saw Molly inside. "Hey, kid! Heard you got the spot." Johnny quietly cheered, walking into the dojo to sit with Molly.
She moved to sit up right and picked at her nail polish as she looked up at her sensei. "Yeah... um... Is Mr. LaRusso still here?" Molly asked, her voice getting a little higher at the thought breaking the news to Johnny that she didn't want to fight.
Johnny pointed outside with his thumb casually, but he noticed the shift in Molly's demeanor and he took a few more steps toward her. "He's on the phone with Amanda outside. Everything alright?"
Molly sighed.
Johnny knew about her panic attacks. Johnny knew how serious the stitches on Mollys face were. He knew how her chest and ribs suddenly started to burn whenever Tory Nichols was brought up in conversation.
Sure, it was because her moms gossiped to him about it, but it's also because she trusts him.
"Yeah... Can I talk with you?" Molly asked quietly, as if she was scared to speak which honestly, she was. Instead of answer her question, Johnny just moved to stand directly in front of her and sat down so they were face to face.
Molly didn't speak right away, only looking at Johnny until the man raised his eyebrows, silently telling her to speak.
She looked down at her hands sitting in her laps as she took one more deep breath. "I can't do the fight tomorrow." She blurted out with her exhale.
Molly closed her eyes in fear of Johnny screaming at her, but nothing ever came. She peaked one eye open and saw the man stare at her blankly.
And then, he started to scream.
"What the hell, Preston?" Johnny yelled and Molly sighed, shaking her head as Johnny continued to yell things she didn't care to listen to. "If I fight, that means I fight Tory. I can't... I can't do that again." Molly yelled over Johnny, shutting the man up.
Johnny leaned back at Molly's outburst. He watched the way she calmed when he stopped yelled. Then he watched the way her arms wrapped around herself to hold her ribs.
The corners of Johnny mouth curved downward at the sight. "You were fighting her just fine at the All Valley." He whispered, trying to make Molly realize she was strong enough for this fight, but Molly just let out a dry laugh, looking to him with raised eyebrows.
"You mean when I got a panic attack and ran off mat?" Molly spat and Johnny sighed, his eyes shutting. Molly looked back down at her hands and shook her head, pushing her lips together to stop a laugh or cry from coming out. "I don't think I'll ever hear the end of it from Cobra Kai. They call me a crybaby now."
Molly licked her lips and let out a breathy laugh, but it sounded like the start of a cry to Johnny.
"Maybe they're right." She whispered,
Johnny sighed. He shook his head as he moved to sit closer to the girl. "Moll—"
"I haven't even been able to think about Tory without feeling like I can't breathe." Molly interrupted him, bringing her hands up to gesture to her throat.
Even though Johnny knew about Molly's anxieties and how her mind worked, he couldn't stop the words leaving his mouth. "So what? You're gonna leave your team high and dry?" Johnny spat and as soon as the words left his mouth, he and Molly both froze, shocked by his words.
Molly opened and closed her mouth, speechless. Johnny cursed to himself, dropping his head.
"Sam is more than capable. I talked with her and she said she can do it." Molly admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. Johnny raised his head to look back up at Molly and watched the way she struggled to catch her breath.
She looked away from him— to the paper windows beside her. "I've been panicking so much more. At the waterpark–even just talking to Robby about Tory made me freak out. I've had three panic attacks just this week." Molly said through her exhales, her words barely audible from how breathy they were.
Johnny pressed his lips together to hide his frown and when Molly turned to look back at Johnny, he felt as if her eyes were layers burning into him.
"Please. You know I wouldn't have come if I wasn't serious about this." Molly whispered
"Okay." Johnny caved and Mollys posture straightened. She looked at her sensei with slightly wide eyes while the corners of her lips raised into a smile.
Johnny couldn't stop himself from smiling when he watched Molly relax. "I'll talk with LaRusso, but if you change your mind, you let me know. Got it, Preston?" He said as he nodded his head to the outside where Daniel was.
Mollys smile took up her entire face and she quickly nodded. "Yes, Sensei." She whispered and Johnny nodded back, chuckling at how quickly Mollys demeanor changed.
As her smile started to soften, Molly jumped forward, pulling the man into a hug.
Johnny froze for a second, his arms out by his sides before he slowly started to relax and hug Molly back.
"Thank you." Molly whispered, but since her face was right by his shoulder, Johnny heard it. He smiled, patting Mollys back. "No problem, kid." He muttered back through chuckles
His laugh made Molly shake against him and when they pulled away, Johnny pointed to the direction of the street. "I was gonna head to the LaRussos. They're doing a pizza party there. Do you need a ride?"
Demetri's mom drive Molly to karate today since they had to meet up so early, Molly didn't really feel like driving. She would've probably asked one of her senseis for a ride home anyway, but if there was a pizza party, Molly was okay with waiting to go home.
She smiled at Johnny, nodding her head as fast as she could as she started to get up. She didn't realize how hungry she was until her stomach started to rumble. "Yes, please."
