Chapter 14 - Confident
ONE DAY LATER
It was time for our show. I was incredibly nervous and still a little self-conscious after my breakdown yesterday. Dan and Phil assured me I would be alright, and Tyler and Zoe were guest-starring. Right now, we were all cat-whiskered up and ready to rumble. I was wearing black skinny jeans, a white shirt, and a black sweater over it. I didn't really want to show anything (like no skin people). We were whisk(er)ed onto the stage (PUNSSSSS). "Hello fellow earthlings!" Phil called into the microphone, struggling to speak over the cheering of the audience. I smiled nervously and said, "Who said I'm an earthling?" I was trying to be funny so people wouldn't notice how unhappy I was. "Are you a marsling?" Dan asked me, his eyes sparkling. I grinned. "Nope." They continued naming planets and asking me if I was from one of them. When they had exhausted their knowledge of planets, they sighed and said, "Well then, where are you from?"
I paused for effect. The entire auditorium was silent, everyone awaiting my answer. "Your mum." The audience erupted into laughter, saying, "Good one!" Dan and Phil groaned, and I smirked. Finally, the audience calmed down. Dan winked in my direction and said, "Hey, wanna hear something cool?" The audience cheered. "Aurora, sing," he commanded. "What?" I said, not believing my ears. Dan's grin grew even wider. "You heard me," he smirked. "No!" I said instinctively. Dan looked to the audience. "Who wants to hear Aurora sing?" he called. They burst into cheers. I shook my head, feeling the heat rise in my cheeks. Soon, their cheering turned to a chant.
"Sing! Sing! Sing! Sing!" they chanted. Dan and Phil joined, grinning, doing a stupid dance to the beat of the chant. After about five minutes if this, I gave in. "Fine! Fine, fine. I'll sing," I mumbled into the mic. Dan and Phil did a little jig. "What do you want me to sing?" I asked. Phil called on someone, and they said they wanted me to sing "Uma Thurman". I laughed at their suggestion. "Umm, no. How about 'Confident' by Demi Lovato?" I asked. Everyone cheered again. I took a deep breath and hesitantly sang.
It's time for me to take it
I'm a boss right now
Not gonna fake it
Not when you go down
Cause this is my game
And you better come to play
I used to hold my freak back
Now I'm letting go
I make my own choice
Yeah, I run this show
So leave the lights on
No, you can't make me behave.
So you say I'm complicated
That I must be outta my mind
But you had me underrated
Rated, rated
Uh hu.
Then, the entire audience sang with me.
What's wrong with being,
What's wrong with being,
What's wrong with being confident?
Oh oh
What's wrong with being
What's wrong with being
What's wrong with being confident?
The audience erupted into cheers after we finished. I blushed, and Dan laughed at my face. "Good job, Aurora!" Phil exclaimed. "Aww, shucks," I said, faking a southern accent. We continued on with the show, Tyler and Zoe occasionally popping on stage to the delight of the crowd. By the time we were done, I had forgotten all about my insecurities. "Bye everyone!" Dan, Phil, and I called as we waltzed off the stage. "That was fun!" I said, laughing as soon as my mic was turned off. Dan and Phil smiled. We headed back to Tyler's house to sleep.
At Tyler's house, Dan, Phil, and I got ready for bed. We were exhausted. I was sharing a room with Zoe and Dan and Phil were sharing with Tyler. As I collapsed on the bed, I thought about the day's events. It was all a blur. Finally, my eyelids drooped and I drifted off to sleep.
