Chapter Twenty - Katsumi
A/N: I'm back :D and I didn't abandon this story for several months again.
This is the second to last chapter + the epilogue. I know I said it was the final, but it ended up being longer than planned.
I made a mistake in the previous chapter, it's now 2012 not 2011. Oops. I'm sorry for any confusion this may have caused.
13th January 2012
"I've locked Chiharu and her child in the room. Hiro is on his way. Remember the plan?" I ask them, my voice echoing in the sparse room. My gaze meets Hana's, her eyes full of sadness. I know she doesn't agree with kidnapping Chiharu. For once, she actually disagreed with our plans.
"We can't kidnap her! It's not right! Her baby is only a few days old! We can't do that! It's cruel!" Hana's voice shook, her eyes watered. Cecilia placed her hand on Hana's shoulder comfortingly.
"Hana, there's no other way. I agree with you, but we have to do what Katsumi plans. He knows what he's doing. This is the only way." Cecilia said softly. Hana hung her head, her hair masking her face.
Minutes pass, silence filling the room. The atmosphere is thick with anticipation, none of us wanting to know what will happen when Hiro does arrive.
Our eyes flicker towards the only exit. Whatever little light filtering through the boarded up windows. My eyes flicker towards the doorway that leads to the stairs. It's highly unlikely that Chiharu could leave. She should be safe upstairs.
The room is a large hallway
Who will win? Who will lose? Will one of us die?
As time drags by, Hana slowly slumps against Cecilia. Both of them are sat against the opposite wall, Cecilia's coat underneath them to protect their clothes from the floor. Cecilia carefully wraps her arm around Hana protectively.
"Someone's outside." Aki says quietly. His eyes flicking up from the laptop screen. I pull out my gun and point it at the front door. My arms shaking ever so slightly. I grind my teeth together. I need to stay calm. Our lives depend on me.
The door slams against the wall, chips of paint and debris raining down from the ceiling. Standing there is Hiro. His hair dishevelled, and his eyes narrowed. His face is twisting with anger.
"Shoot!" Aki commands and I obey. My finger presses the trigger several times in a row, the silenced gun making as little noise as possible. Still loud, but hopefully it doesn't alert Chiharu as to what is going on.
The bullets wedge themselves into his skull, his body falling back and collapsing to the ground like a rag doll.
I still keep my gun pointed at the open door. We never know if Hiro brought backup. Highly unlikely, since Hana and Cecilia made sure that all of Kira's employees were killed, minus Hiro of course.
"I'll go search him. We have to find out how Kira kills. He must have something on him that tells us." Cecilia says. Her body rising swiftly. She rushes over to Hiro's body before searching his pockets. After several seconds, she pulls out a black notebook. She stares at the front cover for a minute. Her eyebrows scrunch together as she flicks through the pages. The first few pages are black, and stand out from the rest.
"Guys, you have to see this." She slowly walks back over, her eyes still glued to the page. She turns around before gasping. The book falling from her grasp and her eyes widening with horror. The blood drains from her face, leaving it ghostly white. "Wha-what the fuck are you?" She spits out, her voice trembling.
Her face slowly turns back to us, before bending over and picking up the notebook. She walks over to me and shows it to me.
Two words are scrawled across the cover. "Death Note"
"What the-" my voice trails off and I reach out to touch it but it's yanked away from my reach.
"Don't touch it." She commands. Her voice still shaking and her skin is still white as snow.
"Why not?" I question, frowning slightly. She shakes her head.
"This is how Kira kills. He uses the power of shinigami." It all clicked together and made sense. So what Cecilia saw a minute ago was a shinigami? No wonder she was terrified. "You write someone's name down and they die. You have forty seconds to write down a cause of death, if none is specified the victim dies of a heart attack."
"Is this legit?" Aki asks eagerly, curiosity filling his voice.
Cecilia shrugs. "It must be, dumbass. I see a shinigami behind me." Cecilia snaps while glaring at Aki.
"He's right. We should check that it's real." I add. I scratch my head nervously.
Cecilia glares at me, her gaze ice cold. "So you don't believe me either? You two are a bunch of morons. I'm not lying!" She snaps bitterly. She places one hand on her hip, her gaze still cold.
"Lia, I know you don't want to admit it, but they're right. We need to confirm that it can kill. It could just be some cursed book that lets you see shinigami, it might not actually kill." Hana says quietly. She slowly walks towards Cecilia and gingerly rests her hand on Cecilia's arm.
Warmth fills Cecilia's glare, and she looks at the petite girl. "Who are we going to sacrifice then? We need results quickly." She takes a deep breath and shuts her eyes before pinching the bridge of her nose with her free hand. After several seconds her hand drops to her side limply "Kill me. Write my name down. I've killed too many people. If anyone deserves to die here, it's me. Kira's sorted out all the other criminals. I'm the last one left. Sacrifice me and find out if this thing can save the world from Kira." Her grip tightens on the book. She opens her eyes and looks away from us.
"No way!" Hana gasps. "No-no!" She tugs on Cecilia's arm impatiently. Tears fall down her face. Cecilia carries on staring at the blank wall.
Her mind is set. No matter what we say, we can't change her mind. Cecilia pulls out the pen she always keeps in her pocket. Her reasoning "you never know when you might need to write something down" echoes through my mind.
She opens the notebook to a random blank page and begins to scrawl her name down. It's too late.
Hana's cries become louder and her tugs on Cecilia's arm more ferocious.
"Lia! Don't do this! Please! Stop writing, I beg you, please!" Her sobs causing her body to shake and her words are barely understandable.
It's too late.
I bite my tongue to stop the tears from falling down my own face. I can't cry.
Even if she is a right bitch sometimes. She's still one of my friends.
No one deserves to lose a friend.
Hana's cries making it harder to fight my own.
My heart is hammering in my chest. I'm silently begging that the notebook is fake. Nothing more than a prank.
Cecilia drops the notebook, her hand still holding onto the pen firmly. She takes hold of Hana's arm and writes something down. As she finishes, the pen drops from her hand and her hands clasp at her chest. She falls to her knees, before collapsing to the floor. Her eyes open and staring blankly. The light that was once there is gone.
Hana's sobs echo throughout the room, as she falls beside her best friend. Black ink is scribbled across her forearm.
The words: "I love you and I'm sorry. Forgive me." written across her pale skin.
I look away from the scene, unable to watch any more. The tears I tried to fight off falling freely down my face. I clench my hands into fists.
Hana's quiet voice cracks through her sobs. "I love you too, Lia."
I leave the room, making my way upstairs.
***
Chiharu stares at me, fear overtaking her.
"You need to tell me Kira's name. His full name. Or I'll shoot." I bark at her. My gun pointing directly at her. There's no more bullets left, but she doesn't know that. She doesn't know the threat is empty. I could never kill her.
She doesn't answer me.
"Now. Tell me now."
My finger twitches against the trigger and the words tumble out of her mouth.
"Light Yagami."
That's good enough for me.
I leave the room, the door banging shut and the lock snapping into place.
Light Yagami should have been more careful when he left his pictures laying around.
I head back downstairs, the scene there no different to how I left it.
Hana is still sobbing next to Cecilia's body. Aki is staring at the wall, his eyes bloodshot.
"I have Kira's name."
A/N: I cried, did you? I love Cecilia. I didn't need to kill her, but I felt like this couldn't be all happy and needed to be sad. Something needs to really push Katsumi into getting revenge.
So next chapter is the final chapter, and then it will be the epilogue.
I'm also planning a new fanfiction that I will post as soon as I've finished this. I'll give you more details nearer the time.
