four. science fiction
After talking with Demetri after the Halloween dance, Dylan started to listen to his words. Partially, at least.
A week after the dance, Yasmine and Moon hung out without Dylan again. For as long as Dylan's been friends with Moon and Yasmine, they've never purposefully hung out without her. And not wanting to lose her friends by their hands, Dylan decided to be the one to distance herself.
She didn't sit with Demetri, Eli, and Miguel like Demetri offered. it would've been too big of a leap. Sitting with them would've been a definite goodbye to the only friends she's ever had, and no matter how bad they have been, Dylan wasn't completely ready to lose them yet.
So Dylan spent her lunches and free periods–times she used to spend with Yasmine and Moon–in the library. In the past three days, Dylan had finished two books between the periods. As she roamed through the science fiction aisle for a new book to check out during her free period, Dylan noticed Demetri, Eli, and Miguel sitting crowded together at one of the tables.
Miguel and Eli had their backs to Dylan, but Demetri was facing the girl. His eyes left his friends for a moment to Dylan and he gave her a quick smile that none of his friends noticed.
Dylan was actually really happy that Demetri made the first move to greet her. It was hard for her to hide her smile as she raised her hand and waved to the boy before walking into the science fiction aisle.
When Demetri saw what aisle Dylan walked into, his jaw slacked.
No way Dylan Lee reads science fiction!
Dylan's eyes scanned over the books in front of her. Everything was either something she had already read or wasn't interested in. She hated to admit it, but in when it legitimately came to books, Dylan did judge them by its cover.
"Anything good?"
Dylan jumped at the voice, almost yelping before her mind silenced her since she was in a library. She turned to face the voice and relaxed when she realized it was only Sam. Dylan groaned at the question, turning back to the bookshelf.
"Nope. Nothing is catching my attention..." Dylan droned out.
When Sam didn't respond, Dylan turned her head and watched as Sam peaked through the bookshelf, her eyes set on something on the other end of the library.
Dylan followed where Sam was looking and frowned when she realized Sam was staring off at Kyler, who was obnoxiously laughing at something with Brucks. Dylan scoffed under her breath, turning back to the books in front of her.
"Seems like somethings caught your attention." Dylan muttered under her breath. Sam snapped her head to look at Dylan, her eyebrows furrowed. "You don't have to be so rude to him you know. Kyler asked me out on a date today and I said yes. He's really sweet." Sam said and while she was too busy trying to defend the boy and Dylan was too busy trying to find a new book, neither girls noticed Kyler and Brucks start taunting Demetri, Eli, and Miguel at their table.
"What kind of girl would ever kiss this shit?" Kyler's voice echoed throughout the library.
Sam and Dylan turned their heads at the sound of Kyler's voice. Dylan immediately went to step out of the aisle she was in when she noticed Kyler's grip on Eli's face, cringing at the scar on Eli's lip, but Sam grabbed Dylan's elbow, stopping her.
"You can't go out there." Sam whispered and Dylan squinted at her. "He can't say that!" Dylan whispered back, her voice harsher than Sam's was.
Before Dylan could try to pry herself out of Sam's grip, Miguel took a step toward the bullies to defend Eli.
"Leave him alone, Kyler." Miguel warned and Kyler, keeping his hands on Eli's face, turned to him.
"What'd you say?" Kyler asked, letting go of Eli and taking slow steps toward Miguel. "You haven't had enough, 'Rhea?" Kyler taunted, but Miguel didn't say anything after that, keeping his eyes just past Kyler instead of looking at him.
Kyler shoved Miguel back as Brucks pretended to jump at Eli as if he was going to attack him. Eli flinched and spun around on his heels fast to run out of the library, Miguel right behind him.
"Get the hell out of here, man. You don't want this shit." Kyler called out after them, slowly following the boys out of the library.
Kyler caught up with Demetri, who was walking slower than Miguel and Eli were. Kyler grabbed a handful of Demetri's backpack and ripped it off of the one shoulder he had it thrown across.
Demetri didn't try to fight Kyler, only watched as the bully raised his backpack over the trashcan. He took a small step forward, a pleading look on his face. "No, come on, not the trash!"
As soon as Demetri took that step toward Kyler, he let go of the backpack. Dylan frowned watching it all happen, mad at Sam for holding her back but also mad at herself for not trying harder.
"I just threw a yogurt in there." Demetri complained more to himself than Kyler.
"Now it's double dip." Kyler chuckled out, walking out of the library and bashing his shoulder into Demetri's in the process. "What a bunch of losers." He spat under his breath as Brucks laughed following after him.
"Dude, I think he was gonna cry!"
Once all of the boys left the library, Dylan turned around to face Sam. She was struggling to process what she just witnessed. The entire time she's been talking to Kyler, Sam's never seen him be mean to anyone and now she sees this?
Dylan wanted to comfort the girl, but another part of her really wanted to say "i told you so" considering she's said how much she hates Kyler since June and it was now November.
Instead, Dylan just frowned at her friend, holding back a scoff. "Yeah, he seems really nice." She muttered, finally pulling herself out of Sam's grasp.
She blindly grabbed a book, not even caring to look at the summary or even read the title. "Have a nice date." Dylan grumbled under her breath as she pushed the book under her arm and walked toward the librarian to check out her book.
...
Dylan didn't talk to Sam, Moon, or Yasmine for the rest of the week. She told them she had to study for finals and instead made home at a small table in the corner of the library where she could read to herself and be alone. A couple times, Demetri, Miguel, and Eli passed by and stopped to talk with her, but they never sat down since she always took a two person table.
When the weekend finally rolled around, she just stayed at home. Devon insisted they rewatch the Harry Potter movies and make homemade butterbeer that followed some random recipe off of Buzzfeed.
Dylan and Devon were sprawled across their couch, their eyes glued on Cedric Diggory walking through the Triwizard Maze when Dylan's phone rang.
Devon aggressively shushed her older sister, making Dulan scoff. "Oh, you shush!" Dylan mocked back as she grabbed her phone.
When she saw Sam calling her, Dylan rolled her eyes but answered nonetheless. She didn't move from the couch or pause the movie, which annoyed Devon, but she was used to it.
"Hello?" Dylan asked dryly.
Sam sniffled from the other end of the call and whatever annoyance or disappointment toward Sam that had been bothering Dylan immediately left her body.
"Dylan?" Sam cried, her voice breaking as she struggled to just get her friend's name out. Dylan sat up in her seat, her eyes wide as her heart rate started to pick up.
"Sam? Are you okay?" Dylan asked and Devon turned to face her sister next to her. Seeing how panicked Dylan looked, Devin paused the movie while keeping her eyes on her older sister.
Sam let out a small noise that Dylan couldn't register as a cry or just a breath. "Can you please come and pick me up? I'm at the movie theaters... I can't—" Sam's words were cut off by a loud sob and instantly, Dylan shot off the couch and ran toward the front door to put her shoes on.
"Of course. I'm on my way right now." Dylan said, at her front door in a blink of an eye and slipping her shoes on.
She looked back to Devon on the couch, whose eyes were wide and watching Dylan for her to tell her what happened. Dylan readjusted the phone on her ear so she could talk to Devon as she reached for the door handle.
"I'll be right back!" Dylan whispered, but Devon could hear her from across the room. She knew what ever was happening was urgent because of how tense Dylan immediately got. So she nodded her head and Dylan whispered one more "i love you" to Devon before she ran out of the house.
...
Did Dylan speed to get to the move theater? Yes.
Did she care? No.
As soon as she pulled up to the movie theater, Dylan saw Sam sitting against the wall, her knees pulled to her chest and her head hiding in between her knees.
When she heard a car pull up, Sam slowly raised her head and felt her entire body relax. She pushed herself off the ground and ran toward Dylan's car as if someone was chasing after her.
Her breaths were ragged, coming out as cries and whimpers as she jumped into the car. "Please drive. The movies about to get out." Sam asked, her voice barely audible over the music Dylan was playing. If Dylan wasn't giving 100% of her attention on Sam, she would've missed it.
She slammed her foot on the gas and her volkswagen beetle became a red blur to the watchers leaving the theater.
Dylan turned to look at Sam, watching as her friend as she stared off at the road in front of her. Sam knew Dylan was looking at her. She could feel her eyes boring into her head.
"Thank you." Was all she managed to get out in that moment. Her voice wavered and her mouth suddenly dried up.
Dylan shook her head instantly as she turned back to the road. "Of course." She said quickly so Sam didn't feel bad about calling her. Dylan's palms started to sweat nervously and she readjusted her hands on the steering wheel.
"Sam, what happened?" Dylan asked and Sam swallowed tk try and ease her dry throat.
"Kyler... He kept trying to..." Sam couldn't finish her sentence, but she didn't need to. Dylan already got the hint and could figure out what Sam couldn't say.
Her hands tightened around the steering wheel, giving her a little burning feeling across her palms, but she didn't care. Her jaw clenched tightly as she thought about what Kyler had done to her best friend.
She wanted to be mad at the boy—well, Dylan actually wanted to turn the car around and run Kyler over with it as he walked out of the theater, but Dylan knew Sam needed comfort right now, and revenge later.
Dylan let out a small breath of air and turned back to Sam. "Thank you for calling me." Dylan said and Sam sniffled, her eyes moving to the center console of Dylan's car a water she left there earlier in the week still was.
She took a small sip of water and once she swallowed, Sam turned back to Dylan and gave her a weak smile. "Thank you for answering. I know you were upset with me about holding you back in the library the other day." Sam muttered and Dylan sighed.
"Sam, I could be mad at you for months and if you called me, I would respond in a heartbeat. No questions asked." Dylan said. She turned back to Sam and saw the girl already staring at her with big, tear-filled eyes. Dylan gave Sam a lopsided smile and sheepishly shrugged. "I'm always gonna have your back." Dylan said softly.
That was all Sam needed to hear before she let go. She had someone in her corner. She had a friend—no, she had the best friend.
Sam dropped her head and felt as if she were about to cry, but she didn't have any more left in her so Sam quickly wiped her eyes and sniffled instead.
The sound made Dylan turn back to Sam and watch her for a few seconds. She didn't know the extent of whatever Kyler had done to her, but Dylan could guess that Sam wouldn't want to go home right now and have her parents see her like this.
Dylan turned back to the road and instead of driving toward Sam's house, she drove to her own. "Do you want to sleepover tonight? Dev and I are watching the Harry Potter movies."
Sam didn't answer right away. Instead, she squinted and for the first time since getting in the car, she let out a small laugh. "I didn't know you liked Harry Potter." Sam giggled out and Dylan rolled her eyes, holding back her own smile.
"Get all your giggles out. Yes, I watch Harry Potter, and Star Wars, and I read nerdy comics— Do you want the sleepover or not?" Dylan laughed out, turning back to Sam.
Once Sam was done getting all of her laughter out, her face softened into a small smile. "Yes, please."
Dylan smiled, humming to herself triumphantly as she turned back to the road. "Okay, but I have to warn you... Devon and I are about to finish the fourth movie which means you'll be seeing me cry over Cedric's death and then immediately start giggling seeing Draco in the fifth movie." Dylan warned and Sam threw her head back and laughed loudly.
