one. summers end
For as long as Dylan has been friends with Moon and Yasmine, the three girls would spend their last week of summer doing just about anything they could before school started again and now that they all had their licenses, their tradition only became easier.
And with Samantha LaRusso in their friend group now, they had an extra brain spewing out ideas on what they could do with their last week of freedom.
It was Moon's idea to drive up the Hollywood hills and look at the city lights as they all passed around a joint. Yasmine offered to drive, saying she wasn't in the mood to smoke and get the smell of weed all over her new designer clothes.
As the blonde drove, Dylan sat in the seat behind the passenger seat where Moon was, giving her the perfect view of Yasmine's phone as she texted while she drove. Dylan noticed Yasmine texting and driving as soon as Yasmine picked her up, but Dylan kept her mouth shut the whole drive about it.
Only now, Yasmine was driving through the narrow and twisted roads of Hollywood Hills, so Dylan was a little more nervous.
"Uh... Yas? We're gonna be at the top in not even five minutes. Can you wait to text back Rory later?" Dylan asked, leaning forward and gripping onto Moon's seat in front of her gently.
She couldn't see it directly, but the way Yasmine's eyelashes fluttered told Dylan she rolled her eyes. "Relax. I'm a pro at texting and driving." Yasmine bragged before she looked back at Dylan and raised her eyebrows. "Trust me, it's okay."
When Yasmine turned back to the road, Dylan rolled her eyes and sat back. There was no point in arguing when Yasmine was being stubborn.
"You know, if she doesn't care about our safety, I thought she'd at least care about her car." Dylan muttered under her breath, glancing at Sam.
Sam snickered, shaking her head and leaning toward Dylan next to her. "She's way too obsessed with this car to let anything happen to it." She added before she raised her eyebrows. "Though, I'd pay to see her parents' reaction if she scratched it. They'd probably—"
Sam's words were cut off by a violent jolt forward. Dylan was yanked against her seatbelt, her neck snapping forward before slamming back.
"Oh, my God." Yasmine whispered, frozen in shock as Dylan groaned, her vision blurring for a moment from the pain in her neck.
She raised her hand to rub her neck and slowly turned her head toward Yasmine, her heart pounding in her chest. "Yasmine, I told you you shouldn't be on your phone!" Dylan's voice cracked as panic clawed its way up her throat, making her feel sick.
Before Yasmine could respond, a loud thud echoed against Dylan's window, making her yelp. Her head snapped to the side, locking eyes with a blonde man, his face red with anger as he banged on the glass.
"Open the door." He screamed, his eyes mainly on Dylan since she was closest to him, but his eyes moved to Sam for a second.
"What are we gonna do, guys? What are we gonna do?" Moon cried as the man moved to bang on her window next.
Dylan quickly unbuckled her seatbelt, scooting back and closer to Sam, who immediately wrapped an arm around her. She could feel Dylan shaking.
"We have to call the police!" Dylan shouted, her voice rising above the chaos.
"No, we can't!" Yasmine screamed, turning in her seat with terrified eyes. "My parents will kill me!" Yasmine yelled and Dylan leaned forward, her eyes wide in anger. "You shouldn't have been texting and driving!" Dylan snapped, her voice shaking as much as her hands.
"Open the door! Open the door!" The man screamed, coming back to Dylan's window, his fists pounding against the glass.
Without warning, Yasmine slammed her foot on the gas, causing the car to lurch forward. Both Dylan and Sam yelled at the sudden jolt, Dylan scrambling back to her side of the car as Yasmine sped away.
Dylan fumbled with her seatbelt, quickly buckling it back in place. Her hand pressed against her stomach as guilt clawed at her insides.
"Shit."
...
To say Dylan hardly slept the last two nights was an understatement. Guilt for leaving that man with his wrecked car ate her alive. By the start of the second night, Dylan called Sam and asked her if she could sleepover.
Dylan only lived a few blocks away from Sam's so when Sam said yes, Dylan wrote a quick note on the whiteboard hanging from her fridge telling her dad and Devon she was out before she walked to Sam's.
When Dylan got the the LaRusso home, it was a little after midnight and Sam was waiting for her in the living room to let her in.
That night, Dylan slept better than she had even before Yasmine rear ended the man's car. She read somewhere once that when you're around people you love and trust, it's easier to fall asleep. Dylan was just grateful she had gotten that close to Sam.
Dylan and Sam woke up in the morning to both of their phones rapidly vibrating from text after text. Dylan groaned into her pillow, waking Sam up beside her more.
"Shut your thing off!" Dylan complained, earning her a whack in the head by Sam and her stuffed bear. "You shut your thing off!" Sam grumbled back.
When neither of them moved and their phones continued to buzz with text messages, Dylan was finally coherent enough to give in. "You win." She muttered, but Sam heard her and smiled in her drowsy state.
Dylan rubbed the sleep out of her eyes as she grabbed her phone. She squinted at the bright lights in Sam's still dark room since she closed the blinds. After giving her eyes a couple seconds to readjust, she could finally make out Yasmine and Moons texts in their groupchat.
"It's Yasmine and Moon. Yas said she invited the guys over to your place today for a pool party." Dylan said through a yawn. Sam's eyes doubled in size at the girls words, no longer sleepy but Dulan didn't notice.
When she finished her yawn, Dylan's face scrunched and she shook her head. "That's a little rude she made it your place without telling you." She muttered more to herself more than Sam, but the LaRusso girl still heard her and only started to panic more.
"But I can't do today! My family and I are going to the beach club!" Sam whispered yelled. Dylan looked up from her phone and shrugged.
"Just tell Yas you have plans already." Dylan suggested and Sam looked at Dylan like she had three heads. Sam threw herself back into the bed and groaned. "But then she'll want me exiled or something." She complained dramatically, but her voice softened toward the end.
Dylan frowned, her head tilting as she looked to Sam sympathetically. "You really think I'm gonna let that happen?" Dylan whispered, her voice sounding almost hurt to Sam's ears at the idea of Sam believing Dylan wouldn't stick up for her.
Instead of answering, Sam just stared up at her ceiling. Even if Dylan would defend her if Yasmine tried to exile her, she didn't want to let it get to that. She just met these girls this summer, she can't screw it up with them already.
"What if..." Her words came to a halt, almost as if she was internally fighting herself.
Dylan looked at Sam just as the girl turned to her. When they locked eyes, the anxiety that settled on Sam's face slowly started to seep away and she smiled. "What if I just tell my parents I want to just spend the day here with you? They love you and they'd trust just us in the house."
Dylan raised her eyebrows. "Except it won't be just us." She replied honestly. Sam rolled her eyes and pushed herself to sit up again.
"Well, duh. But they won't know that." Sam explained, not seeming to have a problem with lying to her parents. Dylan in the other hand, was horrible at lying to her parents and people, period. All the anxiety Sam was just feeling started to creep into Dylan's body.
A single eyebrow raised as she watched Sam nervously. "Are you sure?" She asked, her voice a few octaves higher than what Sam and even Dylan was used to hearing.
Sam didn't even waste a second to nod her head, not wanting Dylan to have to worry about this. "Positive." She assured before shrugging her shoulders. "What's the worst that could happen?"
When Sam got out of bed to get dressed for the day, Dylan sighed, her head dropping as her eyes shut. "Well, a lot now since you jinxed it."
...
Sam's parents agreed to let her stay home with Dylan and as soon as the girls family was out of the house, Sam and Dylan rushed to clean up the house.
Within the next two hours, people slowly started to pile in. The boys showed up before Yasmine and Moon did and none of them brought bathing suits despite it being a known pool party.
Sam stared at the expecting boys with wide eyes. If this were Dylan's house and Dylan's party, she would've told the guys to go back to their houses and grab their swim trunks. How on Earth do you forget your bathing suits for a pool party?
But Sam was not Dylan. She was new to this popular light and the fear of everyone no longer liking her constantly rushed through her veins.
"You can borrow my dad's swim trunks!" Sam blurted.
Dylan looked at Sam as if she were crazily while the boys standing in front of her all smiled.
"Sweet!" Kyler cheered, nodding his head before raising his eyebrow's expectantly at Sam. "Where are they?"
Sam just blinked, as if she just processed the offer she gave to the boys. "Oh, right! Um... this way." Sam squeaked out nervously, turning to walk toward her parent's room.
As the boys trialed behind her, Dylan picked up her pace to walk with Sam. "Are you insane?" She whisper yelled and Sam looked up at Dylan with wide eyes. She nervously shrugged her shoulders as they reached her parent's room. "I panicked!"
Then, Sam turned back to the herd of boys walking behind them, all of them skidding to a stop when Dylan and Sam stopped moving.
Sam gave them a performative smile as she opened her dad's drawer that had all of his swim trunks. "Here you go." She sang, trying to mask her panic, but Dylan could see right through the girls act.
They both waited for all of the boys to pick out suits before kicking them out of the room and telling them to take turns changing in the bathroom.
After about the fourth boy finished changing, Yasmine and Moon showed up in their bikinis.
Dylan's face fell. She quickly tried to hide it, hugging her two friends and as soon as they walked away to greet the guys who had shown up before them, Dylan turned back to Sam.
"Shit." Dylan whispered and Sam's eyebrows furrowed. "What?" She asked quietly, shaking her head in confusion.
By now, all of the boys have changed into their swim trunks. Dylan looked around at all the kids walking around Sam's home and backyard before turning back to Sam.
"I don't have a bathing suit for a pool party!" She whispered yelled and Sam's eyes widened. She quickly tried to think of something to do before her eyes moved up the stairs.
Sam turned back o Dylan and grabbed her hand. "Just borrow one of mine. Come on." Sam said, pulling Dylan up the stairs to her room.
Dylan rolled her eyes, a small snicker leaving her lips. "Does your family normally donate their swimwear to those in need?" Dylan teased and Sam quickly looked back to send a warning glare to Dylan before she continued to drag her into her room until she reached her dresser.
When Sam crouched down, she pulled down Dylan with her and opened the bottom drawer.
Dylan's eyes widened at how many bathing suits the girl had. Yeah, Dylan was rich, but she didn't see the need in having over two pairs of bikinis.
Sam didn't notice the girls shock and only gestured to the drawer with a big smile. "Use any one you want. I don't mind." Sam take before she looked to Dylan. "I'll be downstairs. Come down whenever you're ready."
With that, Sam left Dylan alone with all the bathing suits. Dylan didn't know where to start and just reached for the first bikini she could reach.
She ended up pulling out a purple bikini top with ruffles. It was really cute, but not really Dylan's style. She put the top back into the drawer and grabbed another one. This time, Dylan grabbed the top to a green bikini. It wasn't too thin which Dylan appreciated since this pool party's guest list consisted of Kyler and his goons so she searched for the bottoms and quickly tried it on.
The bikini was an almost perfect fit; the bottoms sat a little weird on her hips, but it wasn't anything she was going to complain about.
When Dylan went back downstairs, everyone was already by the pool. She walked outside and saw all the boys swimming and jumping into the water while Moon, Sam, and Yasmine sat with only their feet dipped in.
Dylan took the empty spot next to Sam and carefully dipped herself into the pool so her head wouldn't touch the water.
She stayed in front of the girls as Yasmine threw her head back, her face basking in the sun. Sam giggled watching Dylan scramble for the hair the on Moons wrist to tie her hair up.
"This is so much fun." Sam breathed out, making Yasmine let out a relaxed sigh and smile. "Told you." The blonde hummed before she looked back to Sam. "Always better to be the one throwing the party." Yasmine's eyes moved behind Sam, her smile turning into a smirk. "And Kyler's been eye-banging you all day."
At Yasmine's words, Sam, Dylan, and Moon all looked Kyler's way. Dylan frowned at the bruise taking over half of his face and her frown deepened when Kyler locked eyes with Sam and smirked.
Dylan looked back to Sam and squinted at the blush taking over the girls face.
"Kyler? Really?" Dylan asked, disgusted at the idea. Sam turned away from Kyler, her eyebrows furrowed and a nervous smile on her face. She shrugged sheepishly, embarrassed to meet Dylan's eyes.
"What? He's sweet!" Sam defended.
One of Dylan's eyebrows raised, her eyes squinting. "Again... Kyler? Really?"
Dylan didn't like Kyler one bit. He might've acted nice and cool to the girls, but Dylan watched the way he made fun of kids. Yeah, Yasmine was bad and made fun of kids too, but Kyler always took it one step too far. Last semester, she had to yell at Kyler like a reprimanding mother because he had a boy she shared classes with, Demetri pinned against the wall.
Before Dylan could try and tell Sam that Kyler was bad news, she got distracted by Moon getting out of the pool, her phone in hand and a big smile on her face as she ran toward the other end of the pool.
"Hey, Rory, do your flip again. I want to get it for my channel!" Moon yelled and immediately, Rory got out of the pool, following Moon's request.
"Hey, hey, what the hell is going on here?" A voice yelled from the entrance of the backyard.
Dylan's eyes widened and immediately locked with Sam's, recognizing the voice. Sam looked as pale as a ghost, whipping around to look at her family walking into the backyard,
Dylan climbed out of the pool as Sam immediately got on her feet and made a beeline to her dad. "Oh shit..." Dylan muttered, running to stand with Moon, who was filming the angry man.
"All right, everybody get out of here right now." Daniel yelled and Moon quickly ended the video before she noticed Dylan still shivering from just getting out of the pool.
Moon quickly grabbed a towel sitting on one of the pool chairs and turned back to Dylan. "Here you go, Dyl." Moon whispered, wrapping the towel around Dylan's shoulders.
"Thanks." Dylan muttered, grabbing the towel out of Moons grasp and tightening it around her body, her eyes glued on the Larusso family.
"I'm so sorry, Dad. I had no idea you were going to be home so early." Sam said and Dylan cringed at the girls words.
It seemed like Daniel also didn't like his daughter's choice of words because he immediately shook his head and gestured to the kids in his backyard. "It doesn't make a difference what time I get home, Sam. You think we want a bunch of... strangers in the backyard making a mess?" He yelled.
"They're not strangers. They're my friends." Sam defended and Daniel scoffed. "Some friends." He muttered as Amanda looked around at all of the kids standing in her backyard. When her eyes landed on Dylan, the only newer friend of Sam's she actually liked, she smiled.
"Hello, Dylan." She said and Dylan froze. She felt the small ball of stress growing simmering down slightly. Dylan awkwardly raised a hand that was still keeping the towel wrapped around herself. "Hi, Mrs. LaRusso." The girl squeaked back, part of herself worried that the parents would see her as a bad influence now and no longer let Sam hang out with her.
Daniel barely acknowledged the girl which surprisingly, made Dylan feel better. When he noticed Rory was wearing one of his bathing suits, Daniel's eyes almost popped out of his head. "Is he wearing my bathing suit?"
Daniel looked around at the other boys in his backyard, recognizing almost every pair of swim trunks as his own. "Wait, are all of you guys wearing my bathing suits?" Daniel yelled, but his question must've been rhetorical because he immediately spoke again.
"All right, listen, party's over, let's go. Take the suits off and leave!"
Rory started to take the suit off and Dylan gasped, immediately spinning around and turning away from Rory. Daniel rolled his eyes at Rory. "No, not out here, genius. In the pool house." He snapped, pointing to where he and the other boys should change.
As all of the boys started to pile into the pool house with their clothes,
Dylan looked to Moon with a nervous smile. "Could you give me a ride home? I have to change and pick Devon up from soccer."
Moon nodded, wrapping an arm around Dylan and looking to Yasmine on the other side of her. "Let's... head out." Moon muttered and the two girls nodded.
As they started to walk past Sam to leave, Dylan frowned at the girl. Dylan hated leaving Sam alone knowing she'd probably get in trouble once everyone left. "See you at school tomorrow, Sam." Dylan muttered, tightening the towel around herself for a third time.
Her eyes suddenly doubled in size realizing she was still wearing Sam's bikini. She turned around to walk backwards and sheepishly smiled at Sam. "Oh! I'll give you back your bikini then." Dylan called out. She would've ran upstairs and changed back into her clothes, but she didn't want to stay any longer than she was welcome.
Plus, she didn't feel too bad about it when Sam giggled at her words, her eyes glued on Dylan as the Lee girl accidentally walked into Moon about four times. "And I'll give you your clothes."
Dylan smiled, nodding her head happily before waving goodbye to Sam once she, Moon and Yasmine reached the gate to leave the backyard. Just before she could walk out, Dylan raised her hand and enthusiastically waved. "Bye!"
...
When Moon dropped Dylan off, she immediately ran into her house to change out of Sam's bikini, throw on a real outfit, and run back out of the house to go to Devon's soccer game.
Dylan ended up a little late, but a few friends had stuck back with Devon as she waited for her sister to pick her up.
As soon as Devon saw her sister pull up, she didn't even say goodbye to her teammates before running to her sister. She happily jumped into the car and Dylan smiled, moving some hair that fell out of Devon's ponytail behind her ear.
"Hey, Dev. How was the game?" Dylan asked and Devon gave her an out of breath smile, her face red from all the running. "It was so good." She giggled out. "We almost blew it, but me and Madison totally saved the game and we won by a landslide!" Devon rambled and Dylan smiled as she pulled out of the park.
"Underdogs?" Dylan asked, her eyes on the road, but out of the corner of her eyes, she watched Devon's smile grow. "Definitely underdogs."
Dylan hummed, happy her sister had a good time and won. As they pulled up to a red light, Dylan looked to her sister with raised eyebrows. "You want In'n'Out?" She asked and Devon scoffed out a laugh.
"Is that even a question?"
...
When Dylan and Devon got home, Devon carried the bag of food inside. Whenever Dylan picked up Devon from soccer and Dylan got them food, it became an unspoken tradition for the two girls to curl up in their basement couch at watch some horrible-reviewed movie.
As Dylan walked up to her room to grab her water bottle before they started their movies, she felt her phone buzz in her pocket. She quickly grabbed her phone and smiled at the FaceTime notification for a call with Yasmine, Moon, and Sam.
Dylan didn't even wait for her friends to greet her when she joined before she spoke, slowly closing her bedroom door behind her. "Wow, wow, ladies. I know I'm irresistible, but you just saw me an hour and a half ago." Dylan teased, walking toward her bedside table for her water bottle.
She crashed down onto her blankets as the three girls laughed. Yasmine tried to hide her laughter with an eye roll, but Dylan saw right through her.
"Oh, hush. I just called because I need one of you bitches to pick me up for school tomorrow." Yasmine said and Dylan's eyebrows furrowed. After Yasmine hit that man's car, she was able to drive her, Moon and Sam home without a problem. Dylan didn't even know there was still an issue with Yasmine's car.
"Your car got fucked up that bad?" Dylan asked and Yasmine squinted at the question as if Dylan was stupid for asking it. "What? No!" Yasmine scoffed out before she smirked. "My dad is getting me a new one. He felt bad about that "deer" that jacked up my Range Rover."
"You hit a deer?" Moon asked, her eyes wide and her jaw slacked.
Dylan's eyebrows furrowed. She looked around at the two other faces on her screen and saw Yasmine and Sam just as confused as her.
"No, Moon, she rear-ended that guy's car." Sam clarified and Moons jaw dropped even further, this time in realization.
"Oh, yeah, right...."
Dylan frowned, that stomach-churning guilt slowly starting to come back. "I'm still kind of freaked out about it. I feel horrible about just driving away." Dylan admitted and Yasmine raised her eyebrows.
"From that meth-head zombie? If I hadn't gunned it, we'd be chained up in his basement right now!" Yasmine yelled and Dylan's eyebrows furrowed.
"He might've just been having a shitty day and we only made it shittier." She tried to come up with some reasoning. If she was having a horrible day and maybe had a couple joints or shots, she would've flipped out too. They totaled that man's car.
Yasmine rolled her eyes, ignoring Dylan's attempt to come up with some reasoning to make her feel bad and instead, went back to filing her nails. "Whatever. I saved your lives."
Dylan suddenly heard a door open on the other end of the call and Sam's head snapped up. "Sam, you got a sec?" Dylan could hear Mr. LaRusso ask. Before Sam could answer, the man spoke again. "Oh, I didn't know you were talking to your friends. I'll come back."
"No, just wait a second." Sam told her dad before she looked back to the call. "Uh, yeah, I can pick you up in the morning, Yas." Sam said and Yasmine smiled, letting out a relieved breath of air. "Oh, good." She groaned out just as Sam left the call.
Now, Dylan heard her door open. She turned her head and saw Devon peaking into the room, her eyes wide and expectant. Dylan's eyes trailed down what she could see of her little sister and saw the girl holding their bag of food.
Dylan smiled, turning back to her call. "Hey, I've gotta go for dinner." She said and both Moon and Yasmine smiled.
"Bye, Dyl!"
"See ya."
Dylan muttered a small goodbye before she left the call and walked toward her bedroom door. As soon as Devon saw her sister coming toward her, Devon's eyes doubled in size and she quickly tried to walk down the hall to not look suspicious.
Dylan opened her door and leaned up against the doorframe, watching Devon with crossed arms and a knowing smile. Dylan opened her door and leaned up against the doorframe, watching Devon with crossed arms and a knowing smile. "And where are you going?" Dylan called out and Devon froze.
Before the younger sister could answer, Dylan leaned her head against the doorframe too. "We've got a movie to watch with our dinner." Dylan hummed, walking toward her sister as her smile grew.
Once she was in arms reach of Devon, Dylan snatched their bag of food out of her hand and pressed her hand on her little sisters back and gently started to push toward the stairs to get to the kitchen.
Devon's smile doubled in size, but tried to hide her excitement. "You remembered..." Devon hummed and Dylan smiled, moving her hand that was pushing her sisters back to wrap around her shoulders."Of course I remembered, dweeb."
