seven. dazed and confused

Dylan was happy with how fast winter left the Valley and the heat started to roll back in. By April, she and Sam were back to sunbathing in their backyards every other day.

They had their sunglasses rested on their noses and while Dylan laid on her stomach, reading a book, Sam laid on her back, trying her hardest to take a nap. Dylan had practically binge-read the book she was reading right now. She started reading it not even four hours ago and now she had only three chapters left.

As she flipped to the end of the book to see how many pages she had left, her eyes caught something just past the pages.

Dylan was startled for a moment–seeing someone that wasn't a LaRusso stand in their backyard, but as soon as she realized who it was, she relaxed and started to smile.

She sat up, squinting even though the sunglass blocked a lot of the sun for her.

"Robby?" Dylan called out, making Sam's eyes shoot open and Robby's head snap over to the two girls.

Robby smiled at Dylan and Sam, who he hadn't met yet. He started walking toward the two girls, but his eyes focused on Dylan.

"Hey, Dylan." He breathed out in an almost daydreamy state.

Sam's eyes flickered back and forth between Robby and Dylan. The corners of her lips twitched up into a smirk watching how smiley the two of them were looking at each other.

"You two know each other?" Sam asked Dylan. There was a hint of a tease in her tone that only Dylan caught.

Dylan's head whipped over to Sam, sending her a nervous, but warning look before she acted casual and smiled. She looked back at Robby for a second and pointed at him with her thumb as she turned back to Sam.

"This is the auto shop boy that kept me company while my car was getting fixed up." Dylan explained and it took everything in Sam not to giggle at the way Dylan tried to act cool in front of Robby. She hadn't seen how Dylan acted around a crush before. It was cute and fun to watch.

Robby's eyebrows raised and he walked closer to the girls. He shoved his hands into his front pockets as he held back a flirtatious smirk from growing on his face.

"Auto shot boy? That's what I've been deduced to?" Robby asked, his voice having the same hint of a tease that Sam's words did. This time, both girls heard it.

Dylan's eyes widened as she blushed and Sam's eyebrows almost shot off her forehead from how far they raised. She turned her head to hide her laughter for the second time and watched as her dad walked into the backyard, a big smile on his face seeing Robby.

"Robby! There you are!" Daniel cheered, walking toward the boy.

Once he was side by side with Robby, Daniel finally saw the girls lying back on their beach chairs that had been hiding their presence until now. He smiled at Dylan and Sam, raising a hand to gesture to his daughter while his other hand moved to Robby's shoulder.

"Oh! Sam, this is Robby. He's been training with me back here in the dojo." Daniel explained with a breathy laugh. Dylan's nose scrunched and she squinted at the mention of karate.

Since Miguel beat Kyler and the other boys up and since Miguel and Sam got together, Dylan's started to feel like everyone and their mother has started to join karate. She felt a little out of the loop. When did everyone just collectively agree karate was cool and why did no one tell Dylan?

She turned to face Sam, sending the girl a confused look through her squinted eyes. "Dojo? When did karate become such a thing?" Dylan whispered to Sam, but before she could answer, Daniel was speaking again, this time, his attention on his daughter's friend.

"Robby, you remember Dylan, right?"

Dylan's head snapped back to Daniel and Robby, her eyes instantly finding Robby's. The boys cheeks started to tinge pink and his smile back less forced and more bashful as he nodded. "Of course." Robby breathed out.

Daniel smiled at the three teens being nice to each other. He was practically shaking in excitement as he threw his hands out by his side. "Look at that! My current student and my former student!" Daniel gushed, gesturing to Robby and then Sam. His eyes moved to Dylan and his eyebrows raised. "And a possible future student?"

Dylan couldn't tell if Daniele as actually offering to teach her karate or simply just making a joke, but before she could come up with any sort of response, the man answered her question himself.

"You know, if you two want to join us, there's still time." Daniel offered, shoving his hands into the pockets of his pants. Dylan was just realizing this is the first time she's seen Mr. LaRusso not in his work clothes. Since she had her sunglasses on, Dylan looked Daniel up and down. It was a rare and unusual sight to see the man in gym wear.

"I'm actually going to the mall with Mom and Grandma." Sam answered sweetly, giving her dad a soft, but not to upset smile.

Daniel winced, looking down at his daughter nervously. "Oh... text me if there's any bloodshed." He said, sounding as serious as ever. His eyes moved to Dylan on the beach chair right beside Sam and he put on his salesman smile, sending finger guns to the girl.

"Dylan, what about you?" Daniel asked and Dylan gave the man a sideways smile.

"I have to head out in a bit. I promised my sister I'd go to the movies with her." Dylan said as she lifted her sunglasses off of her nose out of courtesy and moved them up to rest on the top of her head, creating a small make-shift headband for her hair. Her eyes squinted up at Daniel because of the sun, but she tried her hardest to give him a genuine smile.

Daniel forced a smile onto his face that didn't really reach his eyes. "Alright. Maybe next time." He said with a sigh, nodding his head in defat. Daniel turned to Robby and placed a hand on his shoulder.

"You ready to go?, We're gonna take the SUV." Daniel asked and Robby nodded.

Daniel turned back to the girls, raising his hand to waved to the two of them. "Bye-bye, you two." He hummed and Dylan only smiled as waved back as Sam sat up a little more in her chair and waved back to her dad.

"Bye, Dad. Have fun." She called out while Daniel and Robby started to walk away.

Just as the two of them reached the gate to the backyard, Robby stopped walking and turned back around to face Dylan and Sam. His eyes were on Sam first, giving the girl a small nod.

"It was nice meeting you." He said and before Sam could respond, Robby turned to Dylan. His cheeks started to pink and his ears moved up a little high as his smile grew.

"See you, Dylan." He hummed and Dylan bit her inner cheek to hide how big her smile was starting to get. Just like Sam did with Daniel, Dylan sat up a little straighter and waved to the boy.

"Bye, Robby!" Dylan said back, no longer able to hide her smile as she spoke.  Robby stared back at Dylan for a second, still walking toward the gate to leave the backyard.

With his eyes still on Dylan behind him, Robby didn't realize he was walking into the gate post until his body crashed into the wood.

Dylan giggled at the dazed and confused look on Robby's face as he turned back around to look at the gate post. She brought her hand up to her mouth to hide her giggles, but Robby heard her and quickly turned back around to face her.

With her hand still by her mouth, Dylan wiggled her fingers to wave to the boy.

Robby let out a breathy laugh, his shoulders relaxing when he saw that Dylan wasn't embarrassed by his clumsiness. He waved back to her one more time until he finally walked out of the backyard.

Sam watched Robby go with an amused smile and once she knew he was gone and couldn't hear her, Sam turned to Dylan and laughed loudly at her friend. "He totally likes you." Sam giggled out.

Dylan's head snapped to Sam, scoffing at her words.

"I've met him twice." She tried to deny Sam's words, but Sam only raised her eyebrows and tilted her head teasingly.

"Doesn't mean he can't like you..." Sam hummed, fighting herself to not break out into a smile. Her smile only grew when Dylan looked away and smiled into her shoulder as her cheeks flushed a dark pink.

After a few seconds of composing herself, Dylan turned back to Sam and readjusted in her seat. "How are you and Miguel doing?" She asked, smiling that same mischievous smile when Sam was the one to blush.

"Really well." Sam said through her smile, nodding her head. "He makes me happy." She gushed before her smile slowly started to fall. Her eyes moved down to her lap and she started to fiddle with her fingers. "I just don't know how to bring him up to my dad. If he finds Miguel's in Cobra Kai, he'll flip."

Dylan sighed, rolling her shoulders and leaning back into the beach chair. "I've gotta admit, I admire your dad and that other guy. I too would love to have a petty, 30 year long rivalry if I could. It really takes drive." Dylan hummed, having gone to a Friday night dinner at the LaRusso's and heard Daniel's very long rants about the reoccurrence of Cobra Kai.

Sam stared at Dylan, shaking her head. "You're so weird!" She giggled out and Dylan, trying her hardest not to laugh with Sam, only shrugged back.

As Sam's laughter started to die down, she sighed, making Dylan turn back to her. Sam gnawed at her lip nervously, struggling to meet Dylan's eyes as she started to fiddle with her fingers for a second time.

"There's... another thing about it though..." Sam muttered. Dylan watched her with raised eyebrows, waiting for her to continue. Sam sat up and looked around her backyard to make sure no one was listening before she turned back to Dylan.

Sam leaned toward Dylan, subtly gesture for the girl to lean in with her. Dylan's eyes widened and she quickly looked around the backyard before she leaned toward Sam until the two of them were inches apart.

Sam gulped, almost as if she was fighting herself to get the words out. Her eyes moved back and forth between Dylan and around her before she let out a small breath. "Miguel's sensei is the guy Yasmine crashed into." She whispered.

Dylan jumped back away from Sam as if she were on fire, which made Sam flinched a little. Dylan frantically looked around the backyard before she turned back to Sam, leaning in again.

"What?" She whisper yelled and Sam's sighed, her shoulders dropping while she shook her head.

"I know." Sam muttered in a shocked but annoyed tone. What are the chances that guy would come back into their lives? Are you kidding?

Dylan's heart sank at the look on Sam's face. She could feel all the heat leave her cheeks and the air leave her lungs in worry as she leaned toward Sam again, a hand pressed to her chest.

"Does your dad know?" Dylan whispered, thinking Sam looked so distraught because her dad found out she was involved in a hit and run.

Within seconds, Sam's head snapped up until her eyes met Dylan's and she scoffed. "What? No! My dad doesn't know about the crash!" Sam whisper yelled before her eyebrows raised and she leaned closer to Dylan. "Does your dad know?"

Dylan's eyes could've popped out of her head. She looked at Sam as if she had three heads. "What? Are you insane? My dad would behead me!" Dylan whispered back aggressively as if her dad was standing ten feet away from her.

Sam sighed, lying back down in her lounge chair. "Just making sure..." She whispered, pushing her sunglasses further up her nose. Sam turned back to Dylan and raised her eyebrows. "So what movie are you and Devon seeing?"

Dylan sighed, leaning back and getting in her beach chair again. "We're still deciding. I want The Last Jedi, Devon wants The Greatest Showman." Dylan said as she rolled her shoulders. She turned her head to face Sam, the top of her raised eyebrows just barely peaking over the rim of her sunglasses, "I'm hoping to convince her that since I drive her everywhere and will be paying for her tickets and snacks, I should be able to get to choose."

Just then, Dylan felt a buzz in her back pocket. She moved onto her side to reach for her phone and sat up when she saw a text from Devon saying she'll be ready to head out in ten minutes.

"Oh, that's her now." Dylan hummed, slipping her shoes on and grabbing her bag off the floor by her chair. Sam let out a small chuckle and saluted the girl as she stood up and threw her bag over her shoulder. "I wish you luck."

Dylan let out a mocking noise at Sam teasing her. She leaned down and pressed an obnoxious kiss to the girls forehead before walking out of the backyard and yelling a goodbye over her shoulder.

...

Dylan ended up winning her argument and the two girls wound up in the theater for The Last Jedi. Since Dylan ultimately ended up picking the movie, Devon begged that she pick where they sit and even though Dylan knew she'd regret this, she couldn't say no.

Why would Dylan regret this exactly? Well, Devon likes to sit in the very front row, and in the dead center. Dylan liked an aisle and at least six rows back. It was something the girls have always argued on growing up to the point where once, when their mom was still alive, she had to sit with Dylan in the eighth row while their dad sat with Devon in the first row.

The movie was actually going pretty well, minus the insane headache Dylan was getting from wearing contacts so close to the scene. But around halfway through the movie, Dylan started to feel little taps on her shoulder and head.

At first, Dylan thought it was maybe the people behind her kicking their feet up, but after a couple more minutes and a handful of more taps, she realized that someone was throwing popcorn at her and Devon when a piece of popcorn rolled off of Devon's shoulder and fell onto her lap.

Devon looked down at the popcorn and gently picked it up, squinting at the snack in between her fingers. "Who the hell keeps throwing popcorn at us?" Devon whispered, flicking the popcorn out of her hands and turning to Dylan.

Dylan squinted the exact same way as Devon. "What..?" She whispered under her breath and spinning around to see who was the culprit.

Her eyes fell on Hawk around nine rows behind her and Devon, a piece of popcorn raised and in hand, ready to throw another piece until his eyes met Dylan's.

Hawk's face paled and his entire body froze. His lips parted as he looked in between Dylan and the popcorn he was holding before he tossed the popcorn back into his own bucket and shimmied down into his seat until Dylan couldn't see him anymore.

"Oh shit!" Dylan could faintly hear Hawk whisper and she rolled her eyes.

She turned back to Devin and shook her head. "It's just some kids from my school. Just ignore them." She whispered, getting comfortable in her seat again.
