12. "I'll appreciate it if you stop crushing on my boyfriend."
Cadence.
My eyes darted between Hugo and my uncle as I nervously played with my fingers. Our living room had never felt so quiet before as it was now. I was sure no one was at home. Aunt Melissa must have gone to watch some stage play with her friends. She usually did that when the weekend came closer. Myra must be with Jake, making out somewhere. The only person who could have disturbed us tonight was Cole.
But, he was already home. Yes, we were that late.
I didn't want to cause Hugo any more trouble than I already had. No matter how arrogant he was and how he pissed me off every time he smirked he had helped Jasmine today. Thanks to him she would be able to sleep in peace tonight.
"Why were you late?" Uncle repeated even though I had already told him that we were dropping off a friend. He knew I had friends but didn't know their names because he had never met them. I would have loved to invite them over but I didn't want Myra or Aunt Melissa to mistreat them so I always just avoided that.
"Like I said, we were dropping off a friend of mine." I slowly repeated. Uncle however wasn't looking at me. His sharp grey eyes were concentrated on Hugo.
"Fine. I believe you. I need to ask you some questions." He grunted.
"You can ask me anything you want, sir." Hugo oh so politely said. I wished he showed that amount of respect to everyone.
"Why do you need an assistant?" Uncle said, directly coming to the point.
"I," Hugo looked at me for a second. He must have realized that he hadn't explained anything about it to me either.
"Unlike other high school students I have rather an odd schedule. A busy one. I have to attend several meetings throughout the month as I'm being trained personally by my father to become a businessman like him in the future. So," he finally paused and his eyes darted between me and uncle. "I need someone who can keep track of the schedule and arrange the time for the meetings and so on.
Wow. Did he really do all of that stuff or was he making it up so he wouldn't have to talk about his sister. Thinking about his sister made me feel puzzled. His sister Hannah was saying something about finding her brother. Wasn't Hugo her brother? Why didn't I think of this before!
I punched myself mentally for being so dumb. Come on Cadence you can do better than this.
"I see." Uncle spoke, which brought me out of my thoughts.
"How much are you going to pay her?"
Hugo frowned a little. He lifted his eyes up and down for a minute looking around weirdly. He was probably doing the calculation. "Three thousand dollars per month." He finally said.
Wait.
WHAT!
My jaw dropped. I remembered him telling me that he would be paying me a lot than what I earned working in the Cafe. He was right. I hardly made thousand dollars a month there.
I kept staring at Hugo and he was trying his best not to look at me.
"That's a lot." Uncle mumbled. I tried to read his face. Was he happy about it or angry? He looked really puzzled. Like as if Hugo had just said that Santa was real.
"Don't tell me," he suddenly got up and leaned forward towards us, especially Hugo. "That you're going to mess around with her!" His fists stomped the table. I slightly flinched.
"No. I won't do anything to her." Hugo calmly replied. His eyes drifted to me for a second. I didn't really know how to react so I just stared back at him.
Hugo's calm and confident reply seemed to have an effect on uncle. He sunk back in his seat, nodding thoughtfully.
"Don't trouble my little girl." He softly murmured after a long pause. I felt my eyes watering around the corners. I wiped away a small tear from rolling down my cheeks. No one had ever cared about me this much. It broke me to leave him like this. I won't be able to hear him calling me sweetheart or buttercup or sugar and...
I broke into sobs. I shook my head several times, blinking repeatedly, hoping the lump in my throat would go away and the surfaced feelings would get pushed back into my heart. After a minute I was able to control them. I didn't want Hugo to see me like this, but I had noticed. His eyes were settled on me.
I rubbed the back of my hands over my eyes and glanced at him. Looking at uncle would have made me cry even more.
Hugo's eyes were fixed on me. They looked soft just like how they were, when he looked at Hannah.
"I promise sir, I won't do anything to hurt her in anyways and she'll be in good care at our house." Hugo said keeping his soft gaze on me. I felt my lips curling up into a smile. I felt like I'd seen a small part of the real Hugo today. Who was much more human than I'd first met him.
"Okay then." Uncle got up. Our conversation was officially over.
I watched as Hugo's Porsche pulled away from the driveway and drove off. He said he wanted me to come living in his house as soon as possible so we were supposed to complete all the paperwork done by tomorrow.
I returned to my room and let my body fall on the bed. The soft pillow hit me in the face. Best feeling in the world.
Soon, everything would be different. I won't be here with Cole, in this room fighting on every little thing. Aunt Melissa won't be taunting me with each opportunity she got. Myra won't be able to take out all of her frustration on me. I won't be able to hug my uncle anymore. Remembering his warm fuzzy hugs made my heart sink in my chest. God, I was going to miss it.
"Cade?" Cole peered his head through the door before coming in. "Dinner is ready."
"Why haven't you switched on the lights?" He asked as he switched them on. "Are you crying?"
I realized tears had made my cheek a wet mess. I got up. "No." I pushed my hands on my cheeks.
"Yeah, right." He rolled his eyes.
I pushed myself out of the bed. In just a few days I was going to miss eating here.
After dinner when I was doing the dishes as usual, I felt a presence behind me.
"Cadence." It was Myra.
Wait, why was she not calling me ugly fatso or something like that?
I looked around and found no one else in the kitchen. Did she finally lose her interest in the nicknames she gave me?
"Hi." I continued the dishes as she stood on my left.
"I figured it out." She crossed her arms over her chest as she boasted confidently.
"What?"
"How you and Hugo became an item." She sneered.
I stopped. "What are you talking about?"
"I knew someone like you would never become something that Hugo would be interested in." She smirked. "You guys are pretending aren't you?"
I wiped my hands on the towel and put it down before turning my face away from her. My heart raced faster. No one was supposed to know that we were pretending other than our friends. Myra wasn't someone who was supposed to know it because I didn't trust her. She would definitely spread this news around the school.
"Why do you think we are pretending?" I said, cleaning the counter.
"It's simple. He's going to hire you as his assistant. You'll be living with him. Obviously, you guys will come and leave the school together. People will suspect. Hugo doesn't want anyone to know about the job. That's why he wanted to establish you as his girlfriend."
Yes, once you knew I was going to live with him for work this wasn't hard to figure out. Still, I was surprised that Myra to figure it out.
"Myra, why don't you ask Hugo? You aren't going to believe whatever I say anyway." thankfully I was done with the kitchen so I could avoid her now.
"Good night, Myra." I turned on my toes. "And I'll appreciate it if you stop crushing on my boyfriend."
I quickly walked out of there without giving her any chance to reply and when she couldn't see me anymore I sprinted to my room. God, I could not believe what I had just said.
I crushed my face on the pillow as I internally cried. What the hell did I just say? I somehow had to make Myra believe that we were not pretending.
I hoped I didn't need to sacrifice my first kiss for that.
I just hoped it would not go that far.
