17. "Why are you so smug about fake-dating me?"
Cadence.
My body went completely numb after I heard the line going dead and nothing but silence remained on the other side. Was it because of some external hindrance or had Hugo purposefully cut the call. There was no way to know.
"What happened?" Caleb patted my shoulder causally.
I pulled the phone away from my ear and tossed it back into my purse. Not sure of how to answer him I pushed my legs hard and struggled through the crowd and almost ran out of there ignoring Caleb and Courtney's calls.
In a desperate attempt to leave the party I began to search for my friends. They were my only ride, my only way of escaping.
"Jass!" I called out to a girl. She turned around and even though the deep red mess on her head was similar to Jasmine her eyes and attitude didn't match up.
"Where is she when you need her?" I talked to particularly no one.
I had lost them. We were apart for some minutes and already I couldn't spot Monica or Jasmine anywhere.
I rubbed my temples annoyed with both the situation and the loud music which had been killing my eardrums. I walked aimlessly through the crowd and before I knew I was outside. Warm October breeze hit my skin tingling it. It was the backyard and literally no one was around. It was just the silent night and me.
Suddenly I felt burdened. What if this continued throughout my school life? What if we had to face people like Courtney everywhere and waste our energy in proving them the authenticity of our fake relationship. I mentally laughed at the irony.
"Cade, sweetheart here you are."
I glared up at him. He had been getting on my nerves tonight. First his odd behaviour and unnecessary touching and second, him siding with Courtney and putting me in a difficult situation. Wasn't he one of the friends of Hugo?
"What do you want?" I dryly asked not wanting to act like everything was fine.
"You." He answered.
"What?" I was shocked. I hoped that it was one of his stupid jokes.
"Cadence." He stepped closer carefully. "You're seriously the only one who hasn't showed any emotions towards me."
"Oh so that's what's been bothering you?" I scoffed. Unbelieveable
"Why every other girl you meet have to fall in love with you Caleb?" My head was starting to ache because of him.
"I'm not saying every girl," His eyes lowered."You are not any other girl."
What was he talking about? Did I crush his ego so badly that it had affected his brain?
I stepped back, still confused with everything. He stepped forward.
Too close.
"You're a special girl." He whispered, his face covering all of my vision.
I couldn't move hell couldn't even think straight. He had trapped me putting his arms around the wall and both of his legs standing right next to mine. His breathing hit my face bringing in minty smell along with it.
"Cade-"
"She's my special girl."
A deep voice came from behind, and Caleb turned his head around to see who it was to disturb his precious moment. He knew who it belonged to.
He always sounded a bit angry when he spoke but today his voice reflected another level of anger it seemed.
As Caleb moved out of my vision my eyes met his. Darkly shining green eyes held a turmoil of emotions but I didn't realise how light my heart suddenly felt after seeing him. My legs moved towards him and in a second my body was colliding with his, mixing with his scent with a hint of familiarity which brought a smile on my face.
"Oh God." I heard a high-pitched voice.
I looked up from Hugo's shoulder towards back. Courtney was visibly shaking. She had come at the wrong time.
"Hey babe." Hugo said before putting his hand on my chin. "I'm sorry to leave you all alone in this party."
I gave him a puzzled look.
His neck craned forward, down at my lips.
What is he-
His lips touched mine and millions of stars burst out, in front of me. What was this? Was I seeing things or was it his hidden secret? That he was a magician.
It was my mind playing tricks on me. Hugo had kissed me before. It was to prove Myra that we were in love. This time it was for Courtney. It was all an act. Then why did it feel so real?
I couldn't kiss him back as I was dazed by his touch. I was standing there like a doll who couldn't move on her own.
Hugo pulled back but kept his forehead on mine. "Don't you look beautiful?" He added with a smirk. Damn. Stop making it more difficult for me! Was this also the part of his acting?
I blushed deep like an idiot earning a chuckle from him.
"Do you get it now, Courtney?" Hugo turned back slightly. "Stop troubling my girl from now on."
Courtney retreated back the minute Hugo finished.
"Caleb." Hugo turned to him.
"What the hell were you doing?" His tone was serious all of a sudden.
"What? I was just trying to get to know her." Caleb shrugged.
I pressed my hands on Hugo's chest before he could take a step forward. The feeling in my stomach was screaming that this wasn't going to end well.
I put my hands on his cheek and turned his face towards me. "Hugo. Let's go inside." I insisted.
"But he-"
"Please."
He sighed pushing himself away from me. "let's go." He threw one last glare at Caleb before taking my hand and interwining it with his.
"I'll have a talk with him later." He mumbled as we made our way into the party.
As I kept my eyes fixed on our interlinked hands, I realised that Hugo had kissed me again today out of the blue. I glanced up at his face trying not to look at his lips only.
"Like what you see?" His smirk made me break the eye contact.
"Shut up!" I flustered.
"Make me." He chuckled.
"Hugo!"
"What?"
"Argh.Forget it." I waved my hand in defeat. There would be no end to this and most probably I will find myself utterly embarrassed in the end.
"Guys!" Justin was waving at us from a distance. "Let's go somewhere else!" He hopped forward.
"What?" Hugo gave him a puzzled look.
"This party isn't our type Hues! There's no alcohol to start with!" He whined. His beautiful blue puppy dog eyes got me. I was about to aww when Hugo spoke. "Sorry Justy I'm not taking you anywhere tonight."
"You're such a spolisport Hues. I don't get how are you so popular with girls." He muttered. I held back my smile.
"Are you done packing?" Hugo turned to me.
"Yeah.". I mentally thanked my hardworking self. I already had packed everything by this afternoon.
"Let's go home. I need to see Hannah." He observed his watch."I'll drop you."
"Um it's okay I'll go back with my friends." I shrugged.
"I can't let you be alone with Caleb. You're coming with me." He ordered taking my hand in his.
"What did Cal do?" Justin's eyebrows were joined in the cutest manner.
"It's the usual." Hugo said as if it was completely normal.
"What do you mean?" I nudged his shoulder.
"He always tries to get the girl I'm dating." He eyes had darkened. Why would you keep a guy like that around then?
"You mean the girls who are your, assistants, and fake date you or the girls you actually go out with?" I said without much thought and when my eyes met his my smile dropped.
"About that fake-dating business." He took the advantage of his height and tried to intimate me by leaning slightly towards me.
"If I were you, I wouldn't say it out loud so causally that people around may hear. Also, you're the only assistant who I'm fake-dating." He smirked.
"Why are you so smug about fake-dating me?" I joined my eyebrows in pure confusion as I didn't get the meaning behind the pride in his eyes.
"I'm not." He replied rather quickly and on top of that he kind of tried to hide his face scratching it for no reason at all.
We strode our way through the party where we were met by Jasmine and Monica in the middle. I explained them I was tired and wanted to get out here for good. Jasmine was suspicious at first but for some reason she let it slide. Monica wasn't the type to catch on things, so she just greeted me good night.
"Let's go." Hugo said taking my hand in his and I left the party leaving the thoughts about Caleb and his strange behaviour behind. I decided to let my mind wonder about something else instead.
Hugo had kissed me again today.
And this time he hadn't apologized.
