17. Night Twenty-One: Just So You Know

Charming didn't know which was going to be more awkward: having to explain that his name really was Charming or having to explain how he wasn't a creep. Aurora's stepmother recognized Charming's face instantly even though it'd been a year or so since they had last crossed each other's path. She immediately moved to tuck Arthur and Alice behind her like she was a shield.

"What are you doing here?" she asked.

"Mom!" said Aurora, shocked at her stepmother's sudden icy behavior. "Why are you acting like that?"

"This man was hanging out with your little sister in the park a year or so ago and holding her hand. He's a creep!"

Aurora turned to look at Charming who was mentally trying to figure out how to explain the situation away. He had learned that being called a 'creep' wasn't any sort of greeting one wanted.

"I'm sorry that we started off on the wrong foot," Charming finally said as he looked at Aurora's stepmother. "I didn't mean to come across as a creep. I promise I'm not one."

The woman still remained skeptical as she looked at him. Aurora turned back to look at her stepmother while keeping her hand in Charming's.

"Please accept his apology. I really think he's a decent guy," said Aurora. "Give him an actual chance. I'm sure whatever you think happened was just a misunderstanding. Alice, he never did anything to hurt you or bother you, right?"

"Right," said Alice as she looked at Aurora.

It was clear that Aurora's stepmother wanted to remain skeptical but decided to let the matter rest for now. She moved to walk into the kitchen where she saw the pizza boxes were situated. Charming moved to take a seat at the table beside Aurora as his hand was dropped. As his eyes looked at the pizza slices, a memory came trickling back to him.

"What kind of carrot is that?"

"It's not a carrot, silly," said Ame with a grin, holding up the triangular slice of pizza. "This is called pizza."

"Pizza..." he said slowly; his gaze flicking over to a sweaty Jungkook and Taehyung nearby that had just been forced through Freddi's Just Dance challenge.

"Here...maybe this will be better," said Ame as she put the slice of pizza down, cutting it into cubes. She moved to get up and grab a fork, stabbing through a piece of cut up pizza before bringing it up towards his mouth. "Trust me. Take one bite."

"Pizza is awesome!" piped up Freddi nearby. "One bite will change your life."

"Charming? Are you okay?" asked Aurora.

"Huh?" asked Charming, snapping out of his flashback to look at Aurora.

"I was asking you what kind of pizza you wanted, and you were kind of zoning out on me."

"Oh...um..." He scanned the pizza options before him before ultimately pointing towards a slice of pepperoni pizza. Pizza had been the first food that he had tried as a human and he couldn't help but to once again think back on Ame as a slice of pizza was handed to him.

To say that supper started off as awkward was certainly an understatement. Aurora's stepmother had a hard time letting her initial impression of Charming go. She kept giving him side-eye as Aurora's father asked him questions. However - the longer that supper went on - the more that Aurora's stepmother realized that Charming wasn't a bad guy. After supper was done, Aurora excused herself, dragging Charming up from his seat with her.

"It's getting late. I should see that he gets home safely."

Charming nodded, extending a hand to shake with Aurora's stepmother and then father. Aurora soon moved to walk out the front door with Charming and over to her motorcycle. As the two of them rode off down the street, her parents watched them disappear down the road from the kitchen window.

When Aurora and Charming reached the apartment, they both awkwardly stood alongside her parked motorcycle. A light was on in the apartment up above them as if someone were waiting up for Charming to arrive home like a parent waited for their child.

"Thank you for staying for dinner," said Aurora. "Sorry it was kind of awkward for you to begin with."

"It's fine," said Charming with a slight smile. "Your stepmother's reaction was understandable. I'm just glad she came around."

Aurora gave a small smile in return as she watched Charming remove his helmet. She took it from his hands, putting it on the back of her motorcycle. She then moved to take her own helmet off, letting the cold night air rush across her cheeks. Charming was beginning to wonder if this was the right time to tell her the truth. After all, supper had gone well enough.

"I have something to tell you," they both ended up saying at the same time.

A blush heated up both of their faces when they realized their perfect timing; Aurora motioning a hand Charming's way.

"You can go first," said Aurora.

It was obvious that the next thing to come out of Charming's mouth was something she hadn't been expecting at all.

"Aurora, I used to be a bunny."
