18. Night Twenty-One & Day Twenty-Two: Broken

Charming had been through his fair share of awkward moments since becoming human, but this had to take the cake. The moment he told Aurora his hidden truth, she fell completely silent. A mixture of anger and disbelief was displayed on her face.

"What did you just say?" she finally asked.

"I used to be a bunny," repeated Charming as a huff of annoyance passed Aurora's lips.

"A bunny, huh?"

Charming nodded his head as he added, "I used to be Ame's pet bunny."

"Kinky," she said with an eye roll. "That would explain a lot though. No wonder you two are so close."

"Kinky?" asked Charming. "What's that?"

"Don't play dumb. I really don't have the patience for that."

Charming opened his mouth in an attempt to clarify, but he was left with his mouth open as Aurora continued speaking.

"I knew that Ame was weird around you for a reason. I should have seen it coming that you two did romantic things like that..."

"All we did was kiss a few times," butted in Charming, but that interjection just served to make things worse.

"Do you still love her?" asked Aurora.

"It's...It's complicated."

"Complicated. Ha. Right."

"I didn't mean to upset you by telling you," said Charming. "I just have been keeping this secret and I wanted to tell you. I figured you might not believe me, but I didn't think you'd react like this."

"Might not believe you? Oh, I believe you Charming. That should be the least of your worries."

Aurora lapsed into silence again after that, leaving Charming standing uncomfortably in front of her like he had done something wrong.

"What were you going to say?" asked Charming after another few seconds were spent in awkward silence.

"Nothing. It doesn't matter now."

Charming watched as Aurora moved to grab her helmet, putting it back on as she got on her motorcycle. Before Charming could say anything, she sped off into the night and left him alone. He stood there for a long while, watching as her brake lights faded from view. He knew that Ame said there was a chance that Aurora wouldn't believe him, but he never thought that telling her his truth would leave him with such a heavy feeling in his chest.

Charming sighed as he sat on the steps outside the apartment the next day. His butt was beginning to hurt from sitting on the cement steps for so long. Aurora was supposed to pick him up for practice a while ago and had yet to show up.

Digging out his cell phone, he scrolled through the contacts until he found her number. His eyes continued to watch the street for her arrival as the phone rang and rang and rang, eventually making him end up in her voicemail.

"Hey Aurora. It's Charming," he said. "I was just calling because I was wondering if you were okay. Can you please call me back if you get this? Thanks."

He hung up after, giving her a few minutes to call back before he tried calling her again. This time she picked up.

"Stop calling me."

"Oh..." he said, startled by the icy cold response. "Are you...are you okay?"

"After last night, no."

"I didn't mean to hurt you by telling you I used to be a bunny," said Charming, "And I..."

"I don't want to hear anything more about that...I just...I'm so hurt, Charming."

"Why?"

"I thought you were going to admit something else last night," she said, "But instead you go and tell me that you and Ame used to have a kinky relationship. The fact that you're dwelling on it and the way you look at her..."

"Aurora, please just give me a chance to explain."

"No. I think you've said enough. Charming, I can't do this with you. Please don't call again. Just leave me alone."

She hung up after that, leaving Charming even more confused than before. He stared at his cell phone for a moment as Freddi walked up the pathway to the apartment building.

"Charming, what are you doing out here?"

Charming looked up from his phone. His eyes were glassy from the emotions he was still trying to decipher. Freddi frowned when she saw tears in Charming's eyes, moving to sit down beside him.

"Why is my bunny man crying?"

"Because I used to be a bunny," he said as he blinked and let a tear slip free from his eye. "I...I think I just got dumped because of it..."

"What?!"

Charming appreciated Freddi's loud concern, watching as a few birds nesting in a tree nearby flew off into the sky in all directions out of fear.

"I mean...we weren't dating yet or anything," said Charming, "But I was getting close to admitting my feelings. First, I just wanted to tell her about what I used to be and..."

"And what? She didn't believe you?"

"She said that Ame and I were kinky."

Charming paused then as he looked down at his blurry feet as the tears slid more steadily down his face.

"I think my eyes are broken now too, Freddi. They won't stop leaking..."

"Oh my sweet bunny man..." said Freddi; Charming lifting his head again as he felt Freddi dapping something soft against his cheeks to soak up the tears. "Your eyes aren't broken. It's just your heart. I know what that's like. Jimin broke my heart when he promised to come back and didn't. Trust me. It takes a bit of time to overcome the pain of thinking you were special to someone else."

"How do you get over it though?" asked Charming.

"That answer is different for everyone, Charming," said Freddi. "Just give yourself a break. So this chick didn't work out. She doesn't realize what she's missing. Just forget about her and try to move on."

Charming nodded. He knew that Freddi meant well, but he couldn't just forget about Aurora. She had begun to mean too much to him.

"Please don't tell Ame," begged Charming. "I don't want her feeling bad about this. One person feeling crappy about all this is enough."

"I promise, Charming as long as you promise me you'll take some time to take care of you."

"I will...once I can stop my eyes from leaking..."

Freddi smiled softly, moving to stand up from where she was seated. She moved to grab him by the arm and tug him to his feet.

"Come on. Lets go do something to get your mind off things and cheer you up."

"Freddi, you don't have to..."

"I know I don't have to, but I want to. Besides - if you aren't going to tell Ame - who else do you have to comfort you?"

Charming gave Freddi a small smile as she mirrored it back, soon throwing her arm about his shoulders. She had to swing up onto her toes a bit to do so.

"I think you got taller," she said as they started to walk down the pathway.

"Either that or you got shorter."

"RUDE!"

Even though Charming laughed at their teasing banter, he could still feel the emotions broiling inside him while his mind tried to come up with a way that he could fix things with Aurora.
