The Gate

"Aronik, what are you doing here?" Jai asked, his voice laced with a mix of fear and curiosity as he shone a flashlight in Aronik's face. Aronik stood frozen, his eyes wide with shock at the sudden appearance of his cousin. He shuddered, feeling a chill run down his spine.

"Get the damn flashlight out of my face," Aronik snapped, his voice trembling with a mix of anger and anxiety. "I was just trying to come into work, but it looks like someone's trying to kill us all. And I really hope I don't get pointed for this. Dammit!"

Jai lowered the flashlight, his brow furrowed in concern. "I don't think you'll get pointed for this. I'll talk to Dillman about putting up the shield."

Just then, Aronik's phone vibrated with a text message. His heart sank as he read the words.

Cord is in trouble. The military wants him dead. They're sending someone by plane to Harrisburg, and they'll be escorted to GuideStar to kill him.

"Fuck," Aronik cursed, his mind racing with worry for his friend. "We need to get that shield up fast."

As they hurried to set up the shield, Aronik couldn't help but think about all the secrets and lies that had led them to this moment. The complex web of relationships and motives that had brought them all together at GuideStar Aluminum. And now, with the military on their tail, everything was about to unravel.

Aronik's heart raced as he frantically typed out a message on his phone, his fingers trembling with fear and adrenaline. He knew that every second counted, that one wrong move could mean the difference between life and death.

"Go to Hargrove and get Cord's family," he said, his voice tense and urgent.

Jai raised an eyebrow, still holding the light towards the ground. "Why do you care about Cord getting killed?"

Aronik took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing thoughts. "Because he's the only one who has ever treated me like a real person. Everyone else just sees me as a means to an end, a pawn in their game. But Cord... he's always seen me as something more. That's what makes him my friend."

Jai just stared at him, his expression unreadable. Aronik could tell that he didn't fully believe him, that he thought Aronik was bluffing about his feelings for Cord. But he didn't have time to argue or convince Jai otherwise. He had to focus on the task at hand.

Aronik's phone buzzed again, and he quickly glanced at the screen. It was a text from Jai, a reminder of their past together. A past that Aronik had tried so hard to forget, to bury deep down inside.

"Do you believe that Jesus will take us, being the way we are?" Jai's text read.

Aronik's heart clenched at the memories that flooded back. He remembered their conversations about faith, about the future, about the possibility of redemption. But in this moment, he didn't have time to dwell on those thoughts. He had a mission to complete.

"Jai, we have to focus. We need to find Dillman and get that shield up," Aronik said, trying to shake off the emotions that threatened to overwhelm him.

Jai's phone vibrated again, and he pulled it out of his pocket. Aronik could see the hint of a smile on his face as he read the message. A hint from their past, a past that they shared and that no one else knew about.

Aronik could feel his heart swell with a mix of emotions - fear, sadness, nostalgia. But most of all, he felt a sense of camaraderie with Jai, a bond forged through their shared experiences.

Without a word, Jai started walking into the darkness, and Aronik followed close behind. They may have their differences and their own secrets, but in this moment, they were united in their mission and their determination to protect those they cared about.

The night air was thick with tension and the distant sound of approaching helicopters. But Aronik and Jai pushed on, their steps quick and purposeful. Because in the end, it wasn't about their past or their beliefs - it was about survival and doing whatever it took to keep their loved ones safe.

Jai completely ignored the incessant buzzing of his phone, shoving it back into his pocket with a frustrated sigh. He could feel the heat of the summer sun beating down on him, the sweat trickling down his neck as he trudged along the dusty road. Suddenly, he heard the familiar sound of Aronik's footsteps approaching from behind. Jai kept walking, determined to ignore the presence of the young man trailing behind him.

"How do you know where to find Dillman?" Aronik's voice pierced through the silence, demanding an answer. Jai finally stopped and turned to face him, giving him a look that clearly showed his annoyance.

"Aronik, Dillman is a robot designed by Cord's father for emergencies like this. I'm sure he's programmed to be in a specific location." Jai's voice was tinged with frustration, but he continued to walk in the direction of Dillman's whereabouts.

"And the shield? Do you know if it will actually work?" Aronik persisted, following closely behind Jai's determined strides.

"Yes, Cord's twin brother was killed while testing it against an EMP bomb. It worked then, it will work now." Jai's voice was firm, but his mind couldn't help but wander to the tragedy of Cord's brother's death.

As they neared Dillman's location, Jai couldn't help but think about the man behind the robot. Jericho was a complex and intriguing character, constantly testing and pushing boundaries with the Pennex project. But the final test, using an EMP bomb, had taken a tragic turn. Jai couldn't forget the image of Chrome, Jericho's grandson, falling from the shield's roof to his death.

The memory of that day still brought tears to Jai's eyes as he thought about the sacrifice Chrome had made for the project. It was a reminder of the high stakes they were all facing and the weight of their responsibilities.

But Jai couldn't dwell on it for too long. They were nearing Dillman, and it was time to put their plans into action. He could feel the tension rising within him as they approached the final stage of their mission. Despite his grief, Jai knew he had to stay focused and keep moving forward.

As they reached Dillman, Jai couldn't help but admire the character-rich voice of Jericho's creation. It was a reminder of the brilliant mind behind it and the hope it represented for their future.

Jai took a deep breath and prepared to face whatever challenges lay ahead. With the memory of Chrome's sacrifice and the powerful presence of Dillman by his side, he knew they could overcome anything. And with that thought, he stepped forward, ready to face their enemies head on.

When Jace opened the dome, Cord's heart leapt into his throat. His brother's safety was all that mattered. But as Cord ran towards him, his heart sank and his stomach twisted into knots. All he saw was horror. His brother, his best friend, was lying in a pool of blood amidst the sharp weeds and sticker bushes. The sight was enough to make Cord's knees buckle and his body tremble with fear and anger.

For the first time in a long time, Cord couldn't hold back his emotions. He fell to his knees and cried, his sobs echoing through the dome. Jericho and Terry appeared behind him, but Cord couldn't bring himself to look at them. He couldn't bear to see the guilt in their eyes.

"He's dead!" Cord's voice cracked as he spoke through his tears. He turned around to face Jericho, his face wet with rivers of tears. He couldn't believe it. His brother was gone, taken away from him in the blink of an eye. Cord couldn't control his anger any longer. He lunged at Jericho, his fists pounding against his chest as he screamed, "You killed him! You killed my brother! You fucking killed him!"

Jericho did nothing to defend himself. He simply wrapped his arms around his grandson and held him close, letting him unleash all his pain and anger. "I am so sorry. I didn't mean for anyone to get hurt," Jericho said, his voice heavy with regret. He held Cord in a tight embrace, trying to offer him some comfort amidst the chaos.

Terry walked over to Chrome's lifeless body and placed a trembling hand on his chest. Tears streamed down his face, mixing with the blood on his hands. "Rest in peace in Nevaeh," he whispered, his voice choked with sorrow.

Jai, who had been standing by the entrance way, still had tears staining his cheeks as he approached the group. This was it. The entrance to Dillman, the place where they would find answers and hopefully put an end to this nightmare.

"Aronik, this is it. The passage to Area 50 and Dillman," Jai said, gesturing towards the dark tunnel ahead. Aronik looked at the passage and then at Jai, his eyes filled with questions.

"First of all, Dillman is a robot programmed to implement the shield? Second, how am I supposed to get through here?" Aronik asked, his voice laced with confusion.

Jai let out a chuckle, a hint of amusement in his voice. "Don't worry, my friend. Dillman will guide us through. And as for you, well, let's just say you'll have to trust us to get you through." Jai's words were cryptic, but Aronik had no choice but to trust them. The fate of Nevaeh depended on it.

"Very carefully," Jai said, his voice dripping with sarcasm as he flashed a crooked smile at Aronik. He couldn't help but feel a sense of amusement at the situation they found themselves in.

The so-called "staircase" in front of them was anything but ordinary. It was an old industrial drainage pipe, with a circular staircase in the center. The walls were made of cinder blocks, painted a sterile white, providing a stark contrast to the dark, dingy interior. A mesh gate, painted a bright yellow, guarded the entrance, with a pad hanging on the wall beside it.

Jai reached out and touched the screen of the iPad mounted on the wall, causing it to come to life with a bright glow. A white outline of a hand appeared on the screen, and Jai placed his hand in the outline, only to be met with a bold red message: "Access denied." Frustration etched his features as he pulled his hand away and a robotic female voice chimed in, "You do not have access to this area."

"Well, that's just great," Jai muttered, turning to face Aronik with a look of concern etched on his face. Aronik, in turn, had a look of determination as he suddenly perked up with an idea.

"Why don't we just climb over the gate?" he suggested, but then his face fell as another idea dawned on him. "Oh, wait...the machine gun on the wall. That thing will go off if we try to cross without clearance."

Jai nodded grimly, his eyes flicking towards the menacing weapon mounted on the wall inside the cinder block containment. Aronik, on the other hand, looked like he was trying to solve a complex puzzle in his head as he let out a sigh.

Suddenly, a light bulb seemed to go off above his head as he turned to Jai with a glimmer of excitement in his eyes. "How about I try my handprint to unlock the gate?" he suggested, his voice brimming with confidence.

Jai couldn't help but look at Aronik as if he had lost his mind. "What makes you think it'll work for you when it didn't for me?" he asked, his tone laced with disbelief.

But Aronik just shrugged and walked past Jai, placing his hand on the outline on the screen. Jai watched in disbelief as the screen suddenly lit up with a green message: "Access granted." He turned to Aronik with a mixture of shock and admiration, as if seeing him in a new light.

"Looks like your handprint is the magic touch," Jai said, a hint of a smile playing on his lips as they made their way through the gate and into the unknown.

"Access Granted," the female voice resounded through the speakers, its tone commanding and final.

Aronik's heart raced with excitement as he entered the gate and stepped onto the first step of the spiral tube staircase. The cool metal under his feet and the faint hum of technology filled his senses, heightening his anticipation.

But Jai's frustration was palpable. His clenched fists and scowl revealed a deeper complexity to his character. He was more than just a member of the team; he was a force to be reckoned with.

"That's ridiculous," he spat, his voice laced with venom. "It doesn't let me in, and I'm damn good at what I do."

But Aronik paid him no mind. He had his own mission to complete, and nothing would stand in his way. He strode confidently into the cinder block cove, the gate closing behind him with a resounding thud.

Jai followed suit, his determination overriding his anger. Together, they would conquer whatever challenges lay ahead, their characters complementing each other in their quest for success.
