Once Smitten

Golden hair

cobalt eyes

a smile so brilliant

it lit the skies

I was smitten

The courting dance

to test and see

if each of us

could become a we

I was besotted

Acceptance of a declaration

my heart beat through a swelling chest

a symbol placed upon her hand

put all my latent fears to rest

I was possessed

The journey through the ritual

blind to all but love

vows all solemnly given

full blessed from one above

I was fulfilled

The passage to our future

using plans we made back when

evolved just as imagined

a house

a home

and children

I was euphoric

All the things we'd hoped to do

we did without regret

and had we not met fate one day

we'd not be finished yet

I was unsure

The golden hair now dull and wan

the cobalt eyes uncertain

the smile once there to light the skies

now hid behind a curtain

I was devastated

To my lips I take the hand

that bears the symbol of our contract

and in that brief moment I perceive

our life

our love

still intact

I am smitten
