So I Guess We're Not That Different After All

A hot tear rolled down my face as I got up and grabbed the envelope labeled "Brian." I got dressed and carefully put the letter into my pocket and stuffed my keys, phone, and wallet into the other.

I heard a knock on my door and when I turned around, Dad was peaking through the door. I could see that he was getting ready for work.

"Hey (Y/n), Lui's mom just told me he's got something important to do this morning, so we'll handcuff you two later." He explained.

I nodded.

"Good because I'm going to go visit Brian." I said, trying not to cry when I said his name.

Dad noticed and came into my room and hugged me.

Two years ago, my cousin Brian died from a car accident. He was taking his driving test, but the wheel locked when he was going into traffic and...

"It's going to be okay," he said, "he's in a better place now."

He might be, but I'm not.

"I just miss him so much." I sniffled.

"I think we all do, Sweetheart."

I sighed as we let go.

"Well, I need to get ready for work." Dad said as he walked towards to door, "When Lui gets here, his mom is going to handcuff you guys."

I nodded and got my shoes on. I hurried down the stairs and shouted, "I'll be back later, love you!" to dad and rushed out the door.

I walked about ten blocks to the graveyard in the cold and it looked like it was going to rain, but it's worth it. Along the way, I stopped by the dollar store and bought a bouquet of white lilies.

When I walked to the entrance, my eyes automatically darted to Brian's grave but eight familiar figures stood there as well. I walked to them and put the flowers and letter done, none of us making eye contact. I stepped back and glanced at Brock's feet.

"I didn't know you guys knew Brian." I said breaking the awkward silence.

"I'm pretty sure we could ask you the same thing." Delirious chuckled.

"We were friends," Vanoss said softly, I didn't look, but I could feel his eyes on me, "you?"

I looked at him, "Cousins."

He nodded and looked back at the grave. We all did the same.

"Did you see the plaque they put on the robotics room for him?" Brock asked.

I laughed, "Yeah. I never really thought they would put his nickname though."

This made them laugh.

"He'd make anyone laugh with that voice." Mini said, a smile crawling onto his face.

"Did he ever teach you guys how to do it?" I asked looking at him.

"No." They all said at the same time, but then they looked and me with evil grins.

"Did he teach you?" Brock asked.

I looked away with a smile and shrugged, "Maybe."

"Do it!" Mini and Delirious yelled.

"No!"

"Come on!" Tyler whined.

"Do it! Do it! Do it!..." They all started chanting.

"Okay just shut the fuck up already, we need to get to the choppa!" I said in the Arnold voice earning laughs form all of them, even Vanoss.

My face got hot because I hate doing that voice in front of people.

"Happy?" I said in my normal voice.

They all nodded like idiots as they continued to laugh. However their laugher slowly died done as the time went by. Sooner or later we were back to looking at the grave of our parted friend.

Some silent minutes passed by, but Lui broke the silence.

"Were you the cousin that dressed up like a princess everyday for 2nd grade?"

I was quiet for a second, but then I said, "Okay, first off, I was a fairy. Second, he told you about that!" I yelled, earning laughs, "He said he'd never tell anyone!"

"Well actually I found out by going through his phone."

I was about to say 'That doesn't make it any better!' But I suddenly got the idea that he read through all of our text conversations.

"What else do you know?" I ask.

"I know you peed on Santa when you were younger." He said getting even more laughs.

"Is that all?"

"All I can remember."

I shook my head and suddenly something that we talked about popped into my mind.

"Okay Lui, since you've read through our conversations, who did Brian secretly date?" I said raising an eyebrow.

Everyone looked at Lui.

"He never said a name but I know it was a guy because they were 'experimenting,' but I don't remember a name." He said.

I squinted my eyes and looked at all of them with an evil smirk, "I know who it is."

"Who?" Lui and Vanoss asked at the same time.

I put my hands up in defense, "Sorry, it's a secret."

"Oh come on!" They whined as I laughed.

"Y/n?" Someone said behind me. I turned and saw Lui's mom, "What are you doing here?"

"Oh, just leaving some flowers for Brian." I shrugged.

"I didn't know you knew Brian." She said as she got closer, soon stoping in front of us.

"We were cousins." I said, turning back to the grave for a second, but quickly turning back to her.

She nodded, raised an eyebrow, and smiled at me, "What are you doing today, Y/n?"

I shrugged, "I don't know, why?"

She shrugged, "Well if you kids are going to go do something together, I won't handcuff you guys together."

I looked at the guys as they looked at each other, then at me.

"What'd you guys want to do today?" I asked.

They shrugged.

"You're the one who calls the shots." David said.

I remembered I had my wallet on me, so I turned around, threw my arms in the air and yelled, "Ice cream!"

~

The nine of us sat in the biggest seat they had, which was the huge, round seat in the corner. From left to right it went: Lui, me, Brock, Marcel, Craig, Evan, Tyler, Delirious, and David.

"Wait so let me get this straight," Evan said, making us all look at him, "you walked up to a teacher and seriously asked her to say 'puño mí papá' in front of the whole class?"

I nodded my head as I laughed.

"Did she do it?" Delirious asked. I later found out that his real name was Jonathan.

"Yeah." I said in between laughs.

They all started laughing.

"D-Did she even realize what she said?" David asked between laughs.

"Not until after she used google translate."

This earn me even more laughs.

"Here's your milkshakes." The waitress said, setting down Brock and Marcel's shakes, "I'll be back with your guy's cones."

She walked away and Brock looked at all of us.

"What do you call a cow during an earthquake?"

We all shrugged and he giggled, "A milkshake!"

We all laughed, but I face palmed because it should've been obvious.

"That actually reminds me of my dream." Marcel said.

"And what's that?" I asked.

"I'm going to open a milkshake shop and name it 'My Yard.'" He laughed.

We all started laughing even more.

"No more puns!" David exclaimed.

Then the waitress came back and handed the rest of us our ice cream.

"You're not being very ice Nolga." Lui pouted.

He growled and I laughed.

"Geez," I looked at him, "cool down a bit."

They all laughed and Jonathan said, "Oh Y/n, you make me melt."

We started laughing even more, but it fell short when thunder boomed outside and it started raining.

"I thought it was only going to sprinkle." Evan whined as he licked his ice cream covered in sprinkles, "Good thing I wore a jacket."

We laughed, but the thunder ruined the mood.

"What a brrrrrilliant idea." Craig said rubbing his arms.

"I cone-not believe you said that." Tyler said.

We laughed but after a while, all of our eyes stopped on David because he was the only one left who didn't make one.

He noticed, looked at his cone for a while, then looked back up, "Dammit I can't think of a ice cream pun." He sighed, "I guess you guys are cooler than me."

"Ayyyy..." We all said at the same time and pointed at him.

We all soon finished our ice cream and milkshakes, but the weather didn't clear up. Tyler got the idea to run across the street to the laser tag place: Jerry's Shooters. We all knew we couldn't stay in the ice cream shop forever, so we agreed.

We headed outside and stood under the shades of the small shop, waiting for all the cars to pass. The wet leaves blew in the wind and kept getting stuck to our sides, but we still stood where we were, waiting for a clearing on the road.

"Okay," Evan said, getting in front of everyone, "after the red truck, we go."

I looked to my left and watched the truck get closer. Once it passed we booked it; We all sprinted across the street and scuffled inside.

Once we were all inside, we stood by the door and peeled the leaves off of us as we whipped our feet on the mat and finally walked away from the door.

"Jonathan?" The guy behind the counter said.

He had dark brown hair with eyes to match and had a beginning of a beard. He wore the red shirt with a blue vest with the place's logo on the back and a tiny one on the front.

"Luke?" Jonathan said walking to the counter, "I didn't know you worked here."

"Yeah, well I got this job about a week ago." He said. He had a somewhat southern accent like Delirious, just maybe a bit heavier.

"Nice to see you guys again." He said looking at all guys as they smiled and waved, but his eyes soon stopped on me, "And who is this beauty?"

I laughed and shook my head trying to hind the small blush forming on my face, "I'm Y/n, but people usually call me N/n."

"I'm Luke." He said and smiled.

Suddenly, two other people came out from the door behind the counter. One had somewhat light brown hair and brown eyes while the other had just regular brown hair, but I couldn't really catch what color his eyes were. They wore the vest and shirt too.

"Hey guys, what's up?" One asked sitting down.

I started to look around the lobby and saw a picture of Brian on a gun and vest hung up. All I could read from where I was was "In Memory of Terrorisor." Hopefully it had his real name somewhere on it.

"And who is this beauty?" The guy asked loudly, making my look to see him pointing at me.

"This is N/n." Like said.

He looked at me and raised an eyebrow, "Is that a nickname?"

I laughed and nodded, blushing a bit more, "Yeah."

He smiled, "I'm Nanners, and this is Ohm."

He motioned to the other guy behind him.

"Hi." He squeaked in a somewhat deep voice.

Without warning, two more guys ran out from the door that I'm guessing lead to the arena for the laser tag. One had dark, curly hair and hazel eyes. The other one had dirty blonde hair, brown in certain lighting, and blue eyes. They were laughing so hard, they were crying.

"What are you guys doing?" Craig laughed.

"A-Arlan..." The one with the dark brown hair wheezed out as he pointed to the door.

Suddenly, a guy with a sombrero and maracas danced through the door.

"'Ello." He said in a Mexican accent.

We all started laughing, but he looked straight at Lui and Delirious and they way he look at them made me laugh harder.

"My boys!" He screamed in the accent and ran at them, tackling them in a hug.

This made us laugh harder, but I crossed my arms and raised an eyebrow suspiciously.

"His boys?" I said, making everyone's ate too go to me.

They blushed and Delirious said, "Not like that-"

But the guy cut him off, "What do you mean 'Not like that?' Don't you remember Delirious," he let go of Lui and started swaying with him, "remember the way we danced."

Tyler let out a horrific, but hilarious wheeze that made the rest of us just die of laughter.

But once again, the thunder ruined it again. This time it took a while to end, but it eventually died down and silence took over.

"So..." The dirty blonde said looking at me, "you are...?"

I opened my mouth to speak, but everyone else beat me to it.

"N/n." Everyone but me and the three new guys answered.

"Ooh...I like it!" The one with curly hair said.

The three of them had the uniforms on too.

"I'm Panda."

"I'm Scotty." The dirty blonde, starting to look like brown, said.

"I'm Droidd." The one with the sombrero said as he took it off. He spoke in a more natural voice.

His very dark brown, almost black, hair poofed out and got in his face. He pulled it back to revel his dark eyes and to put on a beanie.

"Well, I'm going to put this back up." He said and walked back through the door.

"So what brings everyone here?" Nanners asked getting back up.

"Well we were across the street, but Wildcat thought we should come here." Evan explained.

"And you were picking up hot chicks on your way here?" Panda said, signaling to me.

I was screaming in my head, but I just blushed and laughed awkwardly out loud.

"She's the one we're supposed to be handcuffed to." Marcel explained.

The all made an 'oh' face and squinted at me.

"Is she anything like Skittles?" Luke asked, raising an eyebrow.

A series on no's came from the guys making everyone else look at them suspiciously. I look at them, but I focused more on Mini than anyone else.

I looked at them, "Gia and I are like complete opposites."

They stopped and smiled.

"Good," Ohm said, "then we'll be good friends."

~

"You peed your pants?" Tyler basically yelled at Jonathan.

"I was five!" He said slouching back like he was mad, but he was laughing.

"His mom still has it on video somewhere, and she won't tell him where!" Luke said.

"Wait," I said, "so your mom has a video of you peeing in front of a crowd, from a preschool play?"

He nodded.

"I wanna see that next Thursday." I said making everyone laughed.

"Were you in any school plays when you were younger, N/n?" Panda asked.

"Yeah actually." I say as I get comfortable before telling the story, "It was a play that I did in 2nd grade. The elementary school combined with the high school for it."

"What was the play?" Droidd asked.

I smiled, "High School Musical."

Some of them laughed but most of them wanted me to finish the story.

"Anyway, we had to do a dance routine." I continued, "It was easy to remember and do because it was just basically small kicks and some hand motions. However, at the very end, everyone had to do a high kick, and during the rehearsals, I'd always do it right. On the night of the actual play, though, the moment I had to do the high kick, I accidentally kicked the kid in front of me."

Everyone laughed.

"'Accidentally.'" Craig air-quoted.

"Was he okay?" David asked through laughs.

"No," I said giggling a bit, "he fell face first in front of everyone."

This made them laugh even more.

I covered in face, "I feel so bad for laughing"

"I think we all do." Scotty said.

Then my phone went off, so I checked to see my Dad texting me to get home. I looked outside and saw that it stopped raining. I stood up from our circle of chairs and slipped my phone into my pocket.

"Dad wants me to get home." I said reserving a round of boos.

"Yeah," Vanoss said standing up and looking at the clock that said 9:46, "we all should probably start heading home."

"Yeah, I guess you're right." Craig said, getting up too.

Everyone else stood up and stretched, agreeing with us.

"Oh yeah," Craig said while pointing at me, "I'll be at your house really early because my mom has to get to work early."

"Okay," I said, "I don't care how early you get to my house, but if you wake me up before I want to be woken up, I'm going to punch you."

"Noted." He said while laughing.

"Well, we have to get back to work," Nanners said and the boys in uniform went back behind the counter.

"We'll see you guys later." Evan said as we all walked out waving bye.

"I'll see you guys later." David said walking right.

"Nolga, my car is that way." Marcel said.

"All or ours are." Lui said as they all walked with him.

"Bye guys!" Evan and I yelled as we started heading the other way.

On the way to our houses, Evan and I just laughed about stupid things and just got to know each other.

"Hey Y/n?" Evan said.

"Hmm?"

"I'm sorry about being so rude to you all this time." He said looking at his feet, "I always thought you were like Skittles and I just never really gave you a chance."

"It's fine." I said, "In all honesty, I did the same thing to you; I only listened to her opinion of you guys instead of actually getting to know you guys."

"So I guess we're not that different after all." He said.

I laughed as we stopped in front of my house.

I looked at Evan's features as we stood and just looked at each other. He Hershey kiss colored eyes sparkled even through the dark. His jet black hair flew in the wind messing it up perfectly. His honey skin seemed to shine somehow.

My phone binged and made us both jump back to reality. I checked it real fast to see my dad texting me about supper being done.

"I-I've gotta..."

"Yeah, I mean same..."

We awkwardly did that until I turned around and walked into my house.
