Chapter 3. He Skateboards

"And we are going to see your father, because?" I asked Stiles as I propped my foot up on the dashboard of his jeep.

I was nestled comfortably in the passenger seat, scrolling through my phone as he drove to the Sheriff's station. He showed up at my house this morning without so much as a "Hello," and he demanded that I got dressed and went with him to see his dad. I had a feeling he wanted his father to do some research on a certain teenage boy that happened to stumble into our lives last night but I could be wrong.

Stiles glanced at me hesitantly, "You're gonna think I'm a paranoid psycho."

"I already think that," I responded with a laugh.

His eyes narrowed as he focussed on the road, "There is just something off about Theo. I can't say what it is, but I just know it. Maybe my dad can look into it and fight something helpful or useful, even."

I was right, this whole mission was about Theo. I'm sure that Stiles gut instinct is right, I mean most of the time it is. Granted, he also doesn't trust Liam and I think Liam is trustworthy. He looks up to us and I doubt he would ever do anything to hurt us on purpose. Stiles also thought that Kira was dangerous in the beginning, and he was sort-of right I guess. If she were to turn on us for some unknown reason she would be dangerous, but she's totally on our side. The only person he was 100% right about was Peter, which I totally backed him up on. Even when Scott thought he was trustworthy and trying to help us... I knew we still couldn't trust him.

"You might be overthinking things like you tend to do, Stiles." I suggested, praying that he wouldn't get defensive over it.

He shrugged, "Or I could be totally right. You remember the Matt situation? Hm?"

Whenever there was ever reason to doubt his judgement, he threw the Matt situation into play. Yes, he was totally right about him and we slightly overlooked him. I will admit that he was spot on in that adventure, but that can't mean that every time someone new comes into our life we have to give them this sort of treatment. For some reason, I don't want to believe that Theo is "evil". Maybe it's because that means we have to add another bad guy to the list and I'm sick and tired of adding names to that particular list.

"Stiles," I sighed as I looked over at him, "if it's really that important to you, I'll entertain the possibility that he's evil."

"Thank you," he huffed as he pulled into the parking lot of the Sheriff's station.

Once the jeep was in park, we climbed out and made our way inside the building. The atmosphere was calm, the deputies were working on their computers and you could hear the sound of keys being clicked on several different keyboards. Stiles' dad was at the front desk when we walked through the doors. He glanced over his shoulder when he heard the door open, when his eyes landed on us he sighed loudly.

"What are you two doing here? Don't you have school?" he asked, making his way to his office allowing us to follow him.

Stiles was on it as he quickly sped after his father, "I need you to look into somebody for me. His name is Theo Raeken, okay? I know his family left town around the time Theo was nine or ten, his older sister died in an accident when he was eight."

We were now standing in his office and he folded his arms over his chest, "Please go to school."

"Dad, this kid is a werewolf." Stiles responded, as if that was clearance for his father to care more about the situation.

His dad blinked several times, "Your best friend is a werewolf. You are dating an Admonere, which I'm still not even sure what that is. Not to mention, I still don't know what Kira is supposed to be on top of that. When the flying monkeys come soaring through this station, you will have my undivided attention. Until then, just go to school."

"What did you do?" Stiles asked, his eyes scanning over his father.

His dad reeled his head back in confusion, "What? What do you mean, what did I do?"

"There's something different about you," Stiles explained as he continued to look his father up and down, trying to pinpoint what could possibly be different about him.

His father looked the exact same to me, I mean he was in his uniform and he had his morning coffee.... unless he got a haircut that I can't seem to pick up on, I'm not entirely sure what could be different with this picture here.

"What are you talking about?" he asked as Stiles took a step closer, inspecting his father further.

Stiles' eyes were narrowed as he made eye contact with his dad, "What is it? What's different?"

His dad pushed him back and his eyes widened, "For the love of God, Stiles, just go to school."

"I will go if you promise to do a full background check on the Raekens." Stiles countered as he flailed his arms around for dramatic effect.

His father shook his head from side to side, "No. Know what? Just because I'm the only law enforcement officer who knows anything about this does not make it my responsibility to do something every time you have a minor suspicion."

Stiles smirked and pointed towards the door, "Except you're not the only one."

I glanced through the glass and saw that Parrish's desk was sitting right outside the door. I smiled as Stiles found a loophole, knowing that he was going to get what he wanted... as usual. Very rarely does Stiles not get his way, he will always find something to help him get what he wants. It's very inspiring, he never gives up on anything.

"Parrish!"

I let out a snort as Stiles' dad narrowed his eyes at me, "This isn't funny, Kasey."

"You're right, I'm sorry." I responded, not being able to contain my laughter. Stiles smiled widely as Parrish walked through the door, looking confused as all get out.

Stiles patted his shoulder, "You are going to do something for me."

"I don't like the way this looks," Parrish sighed as he closed the door to the office.

⬘ ⬘ ⬘

"So you ran a background check and all you found was a speeding ticket?" Malia asked curiously as we ascended the concrete staircase in front of the school.

She had met up with Stiles and I in the parking lot, and we had informed her of the background check that Parrish had ran for us. Stiles' dad wasn't all that thrilled about it, but it did find something that made Stiles flip his shit. We found a speeding ticket signed by Theo's father, now why that was crucial in this whole Theo investigation... I don't know, but it was important to Stiles.

"A speeding ticket signed by Theo's dad eight years ago." Stiles said quickly.

I was more conceded about the fact that Theo was driving eight years ago, that would make him around nine or ten, so why the hell was he driving? Unless Theo is a lot older than we had thought he was. Stiles didn't seem to try and work that angle of the whole speeding ticket information, instead he was more focussed on the fact of speeding itself.

Malia quirked an eyebrow, "Okay?"

"Who speeds? People trying to get away from something." Stiles said to her, as if he had made a huge breakthrough.

She blinked, "Well, how many tickets do you have?"

I snorted, knowing that he has had quite a few speeding tickets since he's been driving. Thankfully, his dad was able to take care of most of them.

"None." Stiles said confidently.

I folded my arms over my chest, "Now let's count the ones that your dad has gotten you out of."

"Seventeen." Stiles responded, not so confidently.

Malia shook her head from side to side, "I don't know Stiles... I mean I see why you're worried. He's got like great hair, perfect body.... not to mention he was eager as hell to get to touch Kasey, you should definitely feel threatened."

I nodded in agreement to her statement and Stiles' eyes widened as he watched me.

"Thank you," Stiles responded sarcastically, "because I do. Now more than ever."

She shrugged, "You want me to torture him?"

"No, Malia, we don't need you to torture him." I said quickly, dismissing that idea before she could entertain it further.

Malia blinked, "I'm pretty sure I can take him."

"That's not the point," I sighed, looking to Stiles for help.

He nodded, "I have a plan. There are steps to doing this right."

"What steps?" she asked, letting her idea of torture float away in the wind.

"We get the story. Verify the facts. Find a piece that doesn't fit and... and catch him in the act. That's how you do it." he explained.

I glanced over Malia's shoulder, to see none other than Theo himself climbing out of a vehicle and adjusting his backpack on his shoulder. Malia was right, he really was a good looking guy. He smiled widely at me and waved, Stiles noticed the movement and he groaned in response. Malia shook her head from side to side, "Why are you so suspicious of this guy?"

"Because I remember Theo from fourth grade, okay? That's not Theo." he said with finality.

Malia glanced at me, "Well, Kasey dated him, right? She seems totally okay with him, like she remembers him just fine."

Her statement made me feel extremely on the spot. I didn't say that I didn't find it a little weird that he happened to show up out of nowhere, because I do. Then again, I don't see a difference in him really. He looks the same only he's older now, he's got more muscles and he seems to have matured quite a bit. I doubt he's someone else posing to be Theo Raeken, this was him. He's just different, somehow.

"I think we should get to class," I muttered as I turned on my heel and made my exit. Not wanting to dive deeper into this conversation any more.

⬘ ⬘ ⬘

I had decided to take AP Bio for my senior science class. I was more than ready to take on the challenge, and plus I wanted to get college credit ahead of time, so I could take another class when I actually got to college. Scott had signed up for it too, and we spent most of the summer studying and doing our work together. Stiles hadn't taken it, but I know that Lydia and Kira had signed up for it as well. When I made my way into the classroom, all of the seats were taken. Scott was beside Kira and Lydia was sitting next to Sydney. I walked up to my strawberry blonde pal and rolled my eyes, "Thanks for saving me a seat."

"You were late, and Sydney needed a seat... sorry." she responded with her fake smile.

There was one chair open, and a boy was sitting in the seat next to it at the table. I couldn't see who it was because they were hunched over trying to dig something out of their backpack. I sighed and plopped down on the stool next to him. At the sound of my bag hitting the table, he shot up and my eyes widened.

My AP Bio partner was Theo Raeken.

He smiled, "Just couldn't stay away from me, could you?"

"Hm, something like that." I responded sarcastically.

Theo's smile grew, "You haven't changed a bit."

"Nope, but you certainly have." I said, testing the waters with him.

He nodded, "Being a werewolf changes a person. You would know that already, though."

My eyes widened, "You know about that?"

"I know about everything, I did my research... I want to be part of the pack and that means I have to know who and what everyone is." Theo remarked, as he opened up his textbook.

That comment made me feel slightly uncomfortable. I mean, the fact that he felt it necessary to research what I am is odd. He doesn't even know me, why would he try to understand what I am? Why couldn't he just ask me what I knew, rather than taking it upon himself to figure it out? And what exactly did he even find, because every time I look I find next to nothing.

Which also meant that he knew about Lydia being a banshee and Kira being a Kitsune, would he know about Stiles and the Nogitsune though? That happened around the time that I was bitten, so maybe he did. Where he got all this information from is beyond me, it's not like there's a Team Badass wikipedia page. I would know, because I've considered making one.

"Welcome to AP Biology, let's see who's awake. Can somebody tell me what plasmids are?" Mrs. Finch said, pulling everyone's attention away from their conversations.

"Circular self replicating DNA molecules often used in cloning proteins." Lydia responded effortlessly.

I never will not be jealous of her intelligence. The fact that she remembers everything and then is able to replay it back so eloquently is annoying and inspiring at the same time. I'm not an idiot, or anything... and I can keep up with her most of the time, but I'm still jealous of her intelligence. For example, I can't keep up with her archaic latin abilities.

"Nicely stated, Lydia. Now, can you tell me what vitamin is absorbed in the stomach via parietal cell production of a glycoprotein?" Mrs. Finch continued.

Lydia blanked and my hand shot up, I actually knew this answer because it was something I went over in my notes last night. I googled common AP Bio test questions and compiled a list in my notes so I could go over them every week, and this one was at the top of the list.

Mrs. Finch rose an eyebrow, "Miss McCall?"

"B-12," I stated confidently.

She smiled, "Well done. Everyone should write that down, seeing as how it's a popular test question. Mr. McCall, did you know the answer?"

"Um, no." Scott responded.

Mrs. Finch nodded, "What's your number one college pick?"

"Um--"

"Stop saying "um"." Mrs. Finch cut my brother off.

Scott cleared his throat, "Sorry. UC Davis."

"Good choice. It's the beast choice on the west coast for physical and biological sciences. You're in the right class if that's what you're hoping for. Who else thinks they're in the right class?" Mrs. Finch asked, glancing around the room.

Theo's hand shot up, followed by the rest of the students. I shot him a look out of the corner of my eye and he smirked in response. Scott turned around and found that Theo was sitting at the lab bench beside me. He was probably thinking along the same lines that I was, this was going to piss Stiles off tremendously.

"Good. Then you should all be prepared for the test tomorrow," Mrs. Finch began, but she was cut off by the sound of moans and groans from the students in the room, "Don't be so disappointed. This test is specifically to determine whether you should actually be in AP Biology. You have two weeks to drop. Tomorrow's test will just weed out the ones who shouldn't be here. And that could be any of you."

Theo nudged me, "Hopefully we can pass this thing."

"I can pass it," I stated confidently.

He smirked, "I bet I can score higher than you."

"In your dreams, I studied all summer for this class." I responded flatly.

Theo shrugged, "So did I."

⬘ ⬘ ⬘

"He actually thinks he can score higher than me, can you believe that?" I ranted to Scott as we made our way to the steps in front of the school.

My brother chuckled, "It's just some friendly competition, I don't see why you're so worked up about it."

"I'm not," I said quickly, "it's just the fact that he thinks he can do better than me."

He glanced at me in suspicion, "You sound pretty worked up to me."

"Okay, whatever. That's like you saying you could score better than Lydia, it just won't happen." I explained as we plopped down on the steps.

Scott's eyes widened, "What makes you think I can't score better than Lydia?"

"Uh, because you're you and she's Lydia?" I said slowly, like why is he even arguing with me on this? Lydia would score better than almost every single person in that class, if I'm being honest here.

"I studied all summer, too." Scott argued.

I shrugged, "I can admit she will score better than me, you need to admit it to yourself, too. Save yourself from the heartbreak."

"HEY!"

Scott and I turned our heads to find Stiles rushing at us, running like an idiot. He skidded to a halt in front of us and held out his hands, "You two are coming with me."

"We have a free period." I responded flatly.

Scott and I have a lot of the same classes this year, and it makes me kind of happy. It gives me more time to spend with him, plus it gives me someone to work on my homework and projects with all the time. I hate doing homework alone, it's boring and I lose interest way too fast.

"So do I, and so does Theo Raeken. Let's go." Stiles said quickly, grabbing my arm and tugging me to my feet.

I didn't even want to ask how he knew that Theo had a free period. Nevertheless, Scott stood to his feet and we followed behind Stiles. He led us towards the boys locker room, where I assumed he had already told Theo to go. I prayed to God that Coach wasn't gonna be in his office, because technically I'm not allowed in there.

The hallway was filled with people mindlessly chattering away about their first day. I couldn't help but wonder what they were all talking about, I'm sure it's not as interesting as what we were getting ready to talk about with Theo... but still. I wish we were still just normal teenagers with normal teenage problems. That would be awesome.

When we entered the locker room Theo was standing there, with that smile planted on his face. This guy smiles way too much, don't get me wrong it's a great smile and everything but he's just way too happy, "Hey guys."

"Okay, spill. I wanna know how you became a werewolf." Stiles started off, not even bothering to say hello.

Theo blinked, "Uh, okay. I was skateboarding in a neighbors empty pool, trying to do a hand plant. Nobody was home. I'm not that good of a skateboarder, but I guess I was pretty determined because I completely lost track of time. I didn't even realize that it was night until the yard lights came on. Like I said, I wasn't very good. On my last try, I went down hard. Really hard. I was sitting there at the bottom of the pool and I realized something. I never heard the board come back down. It came at me fast, I barely had the chance to turn around before it bit me. Right here," he then gestured to a spot on his stomach eerily similar to where Scott had been bit.

"It wasn't an accident, he wanted to turn you." Scott responded.

Stiles, who was leaning against a set of lockers decided to speak up, "Right. So why aren't you part of his pack then? Why didn't he come back for you?"

"Because by the time of my first full moon, he was dead." Theo answered.

I folded my arms over my chest, "How did you know he died?"

"I met another one of his pack a couple weeks later. He told me the Alpha that bit me was killed by two of his own beta's. They were twins," he elaborated.

My eyes widened as I glanced between Scott and Stiles. The twins that Theo was talking about were obviously Ethan and Aiden. How could he just make that up? His story could be false, but how the hell would he know about the twins? I mean, he did tell me earlier that he did his research, so maybe he is lying and this is all fake and he just threw the twins in there for us to believe him, but how likely is that?

"Scott, listen to my pulse. I'm telling the truth." Theo said.

Stiles took a step forward, "Right. Or, you just know how to steady your heart rate while you're lying your ass off."

Okay, Stiles wasn't wasting any time here. He was getting straight to the point. I couldn't help but feel that this was a good cop bad cop situation, and then there is me in the middle. You have Scott who wants to believe Theo is good, and then you have Stiles who wants to believe that Theo is bad. Then there's me, left in the middle being forced to take a side once again. I have a feeling this is going to get worse down the road and I'm actually going to have to take a side.

I can see the rational to both sides, if I'm being totally honest. I can understand why Scott wants to believe that Theo is good... because he doesn't want to think that everyone that comes into our lives is evil and there can be good guys out there. Then with Stiles, he just wants to protect everyone and he knows that not everyone is good at heart and he knows that there are bad guys out there and he also knows that the bad guys are really smart and they do whatever they have to in order to get what they want. Both sides have great points, and it's hard to pick one.

"Why would I lie?" Theo asked genuinely.

Stiles shrugged, "Because maybe you're not who you say you are?"

"Okay. In fourth grade, Scott, you had an inhaler, I had one too. I remember this day where I ended up in the nurse's office with an asthma attack. A bad one. I was waiting to be taken to the E.R. and you were waiting for the principal. You told me what would happen when you go to the E.R. for asthma how they give you oxygen and an IV of prednisone. You made it sound easy, like everything would be okay. And Kasey, you had a panic attack once, only you didn't know what it was back then because you didn't have them a lot. We were on the playset and someone asked you about your dad coming in for career day and you just stopped breathing. You fell over and laid in the tunnel, crying because your chest hurt and you couldn't breathe and I ran to get Scott to help you and he calmed you down and you were okay again. You worked together to help yourself and you guys made it look like anything was possible if you were together. I've been by myself this whole time. Everyone knows that lone wolves, they don't make it on their own. I swear, I'm that same kid from fourth grade. I was hoping you guys were, too."

Stiles rolled his eyes at Theo's touching storytelling, and I felt a tightening in my throat. I hadn't remembered that anxiety attack until he said something about it. That had happened right after my dad left and I was still not used to the fact that he wasn't going to be living with us anymore. When that kid asked me about him coming in for career day, it just triggered the panic and it happened. Scott showed up and calmed me down in a few minutes, and I remember telling my mom about it when I got home and she cried because she felt guilty about it.

The school bell rang and Theo sighed, "I better not be late for class. You're not the only ones I need to make a good impression on."

He then made his exit and Scott smiled at him. I let out a sigh as I adjusted my backpack, this accomplished nothing other than making Scott like Theo even more. I can tell by the smile on his face that he is starting to like him even more than he did before. Which meant that Stiles is going to hate him even more than before. I can admit, Theo pulling those stories out at the last second was smart on his behalf, it made it seem like he actually cared about us which can't be true because he doesn't even know us. I can feel my switch going to team Stiles, slightly. He was basically emotionally manipulating us into thinking that he cared about us and playing the whole "oh you gave me hope" card when that had nothing to do with anything that we were asking him.

"No, don't give me that look," Stiles said to my brother.

Scott shrugged, "We have to give people the benefit of the doubt sometimes."

"Not this time, all right. I'm right. There's something off about him, I can feel it." Stiles argued as he struggled to fix his hood that was caught behind his backpack.

My brother glanced between the two of us, "Kasey is supposed to be the psychic... not you."

Scott then made his exit and he smirked as he did so. Stiles huffed, "Kasey's not a psychic she's an Admonere! There's a difference, okay!"

He glanced at me, "Did you feel it? The off-ness about him as he pulled that heartbreaking story out of his ass."

"I will admit, that story was a bit guilt trippy, but that doesn't mean he's evil." I said as we made our way out of the locker room.

Stiles groaned, "Oh my God he's evil. Just accept it."
