Chapter 21

My preparedness for this 'date' was far less than a normal date I'd have gone on. Firstly, I wasn't even due to have mine for a further week and a half but secondly, I didn't even pick the activity that we are doing today. After researching what I'd need to take, I packed my bikini and a towel (just in case), a hairbrush and some toiletries. I was always one to over pack and over prepare for that 1% chance that it would be needed and actually sometimes it really did come in handy. I made sure my outfit was easy to get in and out of and that my hairstyle was an updo so I didn't have to worry about putting it up while I was there. I checked myself in the mirror once more before I headed downstairs; my blue jeans and black off the shoulder top were paired with a pair of heeled suede boots. My hair was curled but it was up in a ponytail. I was ready.

As I headed down the stairs with my bag, nerves began to set in. This whole situation was alien to me and there were about fifteen points to it that made me anxious. I was going on a date with the most popular guy from our school and the whole college would be talking about this over the exam break. I was also interested in his best friend, who happened to be really irritated at the fact I was chosen to go on this date with Liam. Also, the fact I knew everything behind their falling out left me a little reserved about Liam, knowing despite his good nature he cheated with his best friend's girlfriend and continues to want to fight him and wind him up daily. This whole thing was insane.

A knock at the door brought me from my thoughts and I opened it to see Liam standing there with a hand in his pocket, a grin on his face.

"Hey!" I said happily, hoping if I faked it I would believe it.

"Hey Leah, you look beautiful!" He charmed, pulling me in for a hug. "You ready for our date?" I nodded as I grabbed my bag and headed for his car, a black Mercedes.

"Wow, nice car." I said as I got in and felt the cool chill of the air con.

"Thank you. It was a birthday present." He said as he put my bag in the boot and made his way round to the drivers seat, starting the car and setting off for the spa. After half the journey in silence, with Liam looking over to me now and again while he was driving, he finally broke the silence. "Are you okay?"

"Erm... yeah." I said hesitantly. I laced my fingers between each other on my lap.

"That didn't sound too convincing." He said, sounding glum. "You can tell me. If you don't want to do this I can turn round and-" I didn't want to upset him, or make him uncomfortable the whole date. I had to do this. I had to tell him everything.

"It's not that. I know what happened between you and Conor. The whole thing." I breathed out, looking down at the floor after saying it. I could see him straighten in the chair. "I haven't told anyone but I just can't get over it."

"Oh." He said, but it was followed by silence.

"Look, I don't judge people on what I hear. I can make up my own opinion of someone and I think you're a good guy. You made Rae so happy on your date with her and you've been nothing but nice to me when we've spoken. I just don't get how you and Conor have let your relationship get this bad." I rambled on, trying to make it better. I could sense the tension in the air.

"It's just got out of hand to be honest. There's a lot I didn't tell him about that night with Gemma and the longer I left it the worse it seemed to tell him. I've regretted everything about that day. I'm not that kind of guy at all. There's a lot I want to sit and talk to him about but he's having none of it, which I understand." He sighed, gripping onto the steering wheel tighter until his knuckles turned white. I placed a hand on his arm comfortingly.

"It can still be sorted you know. I'll help if you want. I can still see glimpses of your friendship when you're together." I smiled sweetly.

"You don't need to do that. I'm the one who made this mess and really I should just sort it out but I just seem to chicken out each time." He spoke softly, like he was downtrodden.

"Seriously, I'll help. I like you both and I want to help you." I said confidently, giving his arm a squeeze.

"You're too nice, Leah, but I really appreciate it." He took his right hand from the steering wheel and put it over the hand I had on his arm. He stroked the top of it with his thumb. Sparks shot through my hand and up my arm, causing my heart to swell. He really did have the charm all girls wanted in a man. As we stopped at a set of traffic lights, he turned to face me and gazed into my eyes. His dark brown eyes were mesmerising and I didn't want to look away. A smile played on his lips.

"What?" I questioned, a nervous smile creeping onto my face.

"Nothing. You're just really pretty. I don't think I ever had the time to really admire you." My cheeks flushed red just as the lights changed green and he turned back to the front to keep driving.

"Thank you. You're not so bad yourself." I responded dumbly, hating myself for even saying it as soon as it left my lips. He let out a small laugh as we pulled into the spa.

"Come on babe, let's enjoy our date."
