Chapter 28
" Orpheus and Eurydice."
" I know this myth," Henry says as he takes the book from Hades, " She died and her followed her to the Underworld to get her back."
" These are the two put of the three souls who ever escape my realm," Hades says.
" Who's the third?" Zelena asks.
" She's standing in this very room," He says as he looks over at Scarlett.
" I thought you said that broke the laws of nature," David says.
" I wasn't dead," Scarlett responds.
" Orpheus helped Eurydice escape by feeding her Ambrosia, the food of the gods," Hades says.
" And where exactly do you get some of that? Because I don't recall seeing it on the menu at the Blind Witch's," Regina says.
Once again, Hades transports them. This time, to the library. He uses his magic to make the elevator appear.
The only way down there, to the deepest part of the Underworld where Hades himself hasn't been, is the elevator.
There is no magic once down there, so Scarlett takes her heart out of her chest before stepping onto the elevator.
The married couple grab hands and step onto the elevator. Killian closes the gate, and they go down
and down
and down
and down
and down
and down.
Then finally stop.
Killian lifts up the gate and they both step off, still hand-in-hand.
The only light comes from the lit torches. They're completely surrounded by rocks. The ground they walk on feels like little pebbles that crunches with every step taken.
Soon, they reach a scale, and behind it, a door. Scarlett locks eyes with her husband, and she knows what he has to do.
Only true love may pass.
She places her heart on the scale. For a moment, nothing happens, but then she feels a need to clutch her chest. It feels as though her heart is being squeezed need it not be inside of her body. Her lungs feel deprived of air.
Before Killian can take her heart of the scale, fire surrounds him and starts to burn him. Scarlett can either end her own suffering, or end the suffering of her husband. She musters up all of the strength she possibly can to lift herself up and throw herself towards her husband to knock him away from the fire. As they fall, Killian flips Scarlett around so she lands on her back instead of her stomach.
After a few pants, the door behind the scale opens, which means one thing.
Their love is true.
They smile, and Scarlett pecks her husband's lips. They help each other up, and Scarlett takes her heart off the scale.
They walk through the doors, expecting to find a luscious orchard... but instead find charred stubs. Every last tree has been burnt to the ground. Scarlett picks up one of the burnt fruits, but it crumbles to ash as soon as she touches it.
They look around them, and all of the hope leaves their bodies. Hades lied to them. He knew there was no fruit. He destroyed it so no one could leave the Underworld ever again.
Scarlett looks up at her husband. She sees the tears in his eyes, and he sees the tears in hers. He walks over to her and brings her into his embrace. Scarlett wraps her arms around his husband and lets her cheek rest on his chest. His hand gently pets her hair. Killian takes a deep breath, preparing himself for what he has to say.
Before he gets his words out, Scarlett covers his mouth with her hand. She looks him in the eyes and shakes her head no. Killian is able to read her mind just by looking into her beautiful glossy eyes. He says nothing, only plants a kiss on her forehead.
The ground under their feet and above their heads begin to shake. The earth shakes, and their surroundings fall. Killian quickly grabs his wife's hand and runs out of the doors and back to the elevator. He tries his best to get her on the elevator, but she won't let go of his hand.
She plants her feet flat on the ground.
" No."
" My love... you have to," Killian says.
" I said... no," Scarlett says.
" Scarlett... please don't make this any harder than it has to be."
" Then get on the elevator."
" I know that you always love to break rules... but this is the one rule that can't be broken."
Scarlett bites the inside of her cheek, the tears now falling freely down her face. Her hands cup the round bump of her belly. She looks down at her belly, then looks back up at her husband.
" Our babies..."
" Will have the strongest mother that they could ever ask for who will love them more than enough to compensate for my absence."
" But what about when I go into labor... y-you won't be there.
" You'll have your mother and Swan, and your brother. You, Scarlett... will never be alone."
Killian cups her face with his hand and wipes her tears away with his thumb.
" But I won't have you."
He twiddles with the ring on her left hand, then gently kisses her knuckle.
" You will always have me. I have always been yours, and I always will be. I will live forever... in your heart."
Killian takes Scarlett's hand and places it over her own heart. She tilts her head up and brings her lips to his. Their hands cup each others faces and their lips move in synch. His tears spill onto her face and her tears spill onto his. Neither wanting this moment to end, but they both pull away. They rest their forehead's on one another's and look into each others eyes.
" I love you."
" I love you, too."
Foreheads still touching, Killian walks her to the elevator. They share one last embrace before Killian closes the gate. The elevator shakes, and they grab hands. Scarlett begins to go up, and Killian kisses her hands.
" I'll travel the seven seas for you..."
" Just to show my love for you."
They hold hands for as long as possible... but soon they have to let go. Scarlett rest her back against the elevator, her eyes looking in front of her, but not focusing on what's happening. The elevator reaches the top floor and Regina is the first to open the gate. She rushes to embrace her daughter. She notices that Scarlett is the only one in the elevator, but doesn't say a word.
Nobody does. They don't need to ask to know what happened.
Even though the Blind Witch trapped them in the library, Scarlett transports them to the portal with ease. Everybody runs to it, all except for Scarlett and Grant. He puts his hand on her shoulder.
" We're almost out of time. We need to get back," He says.
" There's still time. He might make it," She says.
" Scarlett... you need to do this for your children. Please... grab my hand."
Scarlett keeps her eyes on the cemetery. After a moment, she looks back at Grant's hand, then looks him in the eyes. Scarlett grabs his hand. Grant walks into the portal, but before she walks through it, she takes one last look at the cemetery.
A deep breath in, a deep breath out.
Scarlett forces herself to go through the portal... knowing that she had officially failed her mission.
