Chapter 21
Luke's PoV
A couple of days had gone past since I spoke to Naomi and something in my gut kept telling me it was wrong. Something was going to go wrong and she'd be at the heart of it. She was always manipulative, managing to twist Calum and mould him into whatever she wanted. He ate out of the palm of her hand. When we confronted him about her, he'd stick up for her, telling us to keep our noses out and storming off. His time with her was when the band was at its worst, and I couldn't let that happen again...
But I was torn. Naomi had a point. Why was it fair for Calum to get to spend every waking moment with Poppy while the rest of us suffered? Michael was beside himself, worrying about crystal and the baby and how he couldn't be with her to make sure she was okay - he checked up on her hourly, to her annoyance, but she also understood why he was doing it. Ashton was sombre too, messaging Bex when he could, but sometimes the time zones just weren't in our favour after we'd done a show. I had the same issue with Sierra, and every time I saw her beautiful face I just wanted to hold her and kiss her. I wanted to see her do her little finger wiggle or laugh heartily at something stupid I'd said. I missed her.
So that's why this plan would be okay, right?
Naomi had promised that Calum and I would feel the same way. She'd promised that I'd somehow get my gorgeous girl back in my arms...
We'd all packed up and headed to the airport, the journey feeling particularly awkward and uncomfortable as most of us wallowed in sadness that we were about to do our first flight without the rest of the girls. Something burned inside me, in a way I envied Calum, despised him even. This was not fair.
"Luke?" Poppy's sweet voice pulled me from my thoughts and as I blinked up, I'd noticed everyone else had got out of the car. She offered me a concerned look. "Is everything okay?" I wanted to hate her but I couldn't. Despite being Calum's girlfriend, she was a great friend to us all. She cared about us, our lives, our relationships. Something a lot of the 'girlfriends' we'd bought home over time had never given a crap about. Some of them just wanted the time with us but didn't actually care for us and our lives. They wanted their piece of fame. I offered her a small smile as I shuffled out of the car, noticing everyone including Calum had already headed into the airport. Poppy had waited for me alone.
"Yeah, sorry." I said quickly as I grabbed my last bag from the boot of the car. The two of us walked side by side In silence for a second, finding the right words to say.
"I just wanted to say sorry." Poppy said, looking over to me quickly before back at the floor ahead of her. "I can't imagine how hard this must be for you guys with the girls gone and I'm still here. I don't want you to think we're rubbing it in your faces or anything. I'm here literally as your nurse. I want to be considerate to you guys and what you're going through." Once again, she was thinking of us. This is what made her such a good nurse, but also what made it so hard to hate her when your mind wanted to tell you otherwise.
"I appreciate it." I nodded, my gut telling me I should tell her about Naomi and what she had said. But if I told her, would it void the deal? I still wanted Sierra here so badly, could I bear to lose that opportunity? We caught up with the rest of the gang at check in and I made sure to stay away from her so that I never got another opportunity to tell her the plan, even though I didn't know what it was yet. I chatted with Michael and Ashton, sitting in between them both whilst Calum and Poppy sat the other side of the aisle from us, holding hands. I looked down at my own, empty and cold. Sierra's hand should be in mine. My phone buzzed quickly and I checked it within a flash, hoping it was Sierra. It wasn't. Naomi had messaged me under her new account - one none of the others knew about.
MissSweetie: plan is set. When you get to your hotel, put your bags in the room and come outside with Poppy. Say you want to talk to her about something. Then the surprise will await you both.
"Who you talking to?" Michael looked down to my phone but I quickly locked it before he caught a glimpse. I shoved it back in my pocket firmly.
"Nothing. No one." Nice one Luke, play it cool. I mentally facepalmed at my ridiculous answer.
"Right." Michael said flatly, shrugging as he looked out of the window whilst we took off. A short journey later and we were in Germany ahead of our tour dates that began the next day. Feeling nervous, knowing the plan was now on me, we all filed silently into the car. I made sure to sit next to Poppy for the ride to the hotel, which surprised both her and Calum. As the guys got caught up in a conversation, I quickly whispered to Poppy.
"Can I speak to you in private after we check into the hotel? I'll drop my bags at the room and stuff but then can we talk outside?" Poppy hesitated for a moment, her eyes trying to read if something was wrong. Yes it was, but not medically. I pleaded with her, my eyes saying everything as she quickly checked around before answering.
"Sure. Is everything okay?" I just nodded and we fell back into silence.
We checked in quickly, the staff helping us with our bags and no sooner had I stepped foot into my room, which felt so big without Sierra beside me, I headed out the front to follow the plan. Waiting for me outside was Poppy, her eyebrows furrowed as she paced nervously. She noticed me and rushed over, putting her hands on my shoulders.
"Is everything okay? Luke, you're scaring me." Heh, I'm scaring myself. Who ever thought I'd be teaming up with Naomi? A smile escaped my lips as I thought about having Sierra with me once again and how great that would feel. My phone buzzed and I checked it quickly.
MissSweetie: move closer to the road or I'll miss you
Without hesitation, I walked towards the road with Poppy following alongside.
"Luke? Honestly you're freaking me out. Are you okay?" She asked again, her voice wavering.
"It will be, I hope. I just miss Sierra and-" the screech of tyres caught our attention and drowned out what I was saying. We both looked to the road where a 4x4 sped towards us, no sign of slowing down.
"Luke!" Poppy called as she shoved me backwards. I stumbled hard and fell onto my bum, out of the way of the car. It seemed to speed up as it neared Poppy, hitting her without any hesitation. She flew over the roof and landed behind the car, still and lifeless as it sped away.
"NO! POPPY!"
