Chapter 58

Ashton's PoV

Two gunshots sounded and everyone seemed to scream, then freeze. We all took a look around, quickly doing a headcount as we worked out if anyone had been hurt by the bullets.

"Shit! I need an ambulance!" Poppy's voice rang out and my stomach dropped. My eyes landed on Michael and Crystal, Luke and Sierra, Bex... but where the fuck were Poppy and Calum?

"Cal?" I shouted, seemingly notifying everyone else of the fact we were two people down. My heart was in my mouth. Please tell me he was okay. My eyes frantically searched the box despite my feet frozen to the floor.

"Let's get out of here!" One gunman said to the other as the two of them ran off, finally giving us the space to see what had happened.

"I need towels. Anything I can plug the wound with. Quick!" Calum quickly came into view, his face as pale as a ghost. His clothes were drenched in blood, his hands shaking as he quickly looked at us before he ran off, leaving us to piece the puzzle together ourselves. "Shit." Poppy cursed as her phone dialled on loudspeaker. None of the rest of us moved, even blinked or breathed as we waited to find out what had happened.

"911 what's your emergency?" A male voice rang out.

"Hi, my name is Poppy Knight, I'm a nurse. I'm in the California theatre. I have two people down with gunshot wounds. One is unconscious, the other dipping in and out of consciousness." She listed.

"Miss, are you able to give us more information?" A male groan caught our attention. I finally peered round the seats to see who the victims were.

"Jack? Can you hear me?" Poppy asked just as my eyes fell onto his bloodied body. He'd been shot in the stomach, a nasty red circle growing bigger as he looked around barely conscious.

"Oh God." Bex breathed out as we all finally came to terms with the fact that Jack had been caught in the crossfire just as he'd opened the door and run in to protect Calum. Calum quickly appeared back in the doorway with an armful of towels.

"The first is a male, 32 years old. He has a gunshot wound to his stomach, I believe it has missed the spine and nerves but it may have caught an organ. He's bleeding heavily. He's in and out of consciousness." Poppy listed off, seeming to pack and pressure the wound as she was speaking as if she was putting things into a suitcase. Somehow she was scarily calm in this type of pressurised environment. Her arms were covered in blood up to the elbow, like a child who had tried to attempt finger painting. Her dress was stained red.

"Thank you ma'am. The other?" The male pressed for further information.

"The second is a pregnant female, she's been unconscious since the wound happened. She is approximately..." Poppy quickly scooted to her left where Naomi lay with a bullet wound to her shoulder. Poppy felt around her stomach for a moment. "4 months pregnant and I can feel the baby's movements. However she has a shoulder injury and I believe the bullet is still stuck in there. She too is bleeding quite heavily." Poppy hesitated as she looked at Calum. "She is also the instigator of this gunfight so we will need police presence when she comes to." Jack let out another groan as he turned his head, coughing as a large load of blood flew from his mouth and landed back on his face. "Shit. Calum take over." Poppy threw the phone to Calum as she worked on Jack, trying desperately to work out what was causing the bleeding. She used one hand to hold the towels down on his stomach, the other wiping the blood from his face and keeping it tilted to the side. She felt for his pulse and gave a shaky sigh.

"Okay ma'am, I've sent for two ambulances and police presence, is that all that's required?" The man continued, also as calm as Poppy was in that he dealt with this nearly every day of his life. This sort of trauma was going to sit with us for a lengthy period of time but for the likes of this man and Poppy, there was some sort of block on it, making it seem less terrifying to them.

"Yes, thank you. Please just get them here as soon as you can. I'm not sure I can keep them both stable." She said ominously as she glanced between the two. Poppy moved back over to Naomi and gave her the once over, desperate to make sure both were safe despite what we had just been put through. I could sense the tension, the confusion from the group as to why we should even help her. Yet Poppy seemed oblivious, just stuck with tunnel vision.

"Poppy!" Calum suddenly shouted, making everyone jump as he called her back over. She skidded beside Jack who was now out cold, blood starting to pool underneath his back.

"No no no." She muttered to herself as she felt for a pulse. "No no no. Come on." I bit my lips together realising that Poppy panicking could only mean something really bad. She put her face close to Jack's mouth and shook her head momentarily.

"Oh fuck." Calum muttered as Poppy quickly rubbed her hands over her head and hair, smearing blood along her hairline. She ripped Jack's shirt open and began compressions, giving him breaths in between her rounds of CPR. Sirens began to sound in the background and Calum jumped to his feet, running out to grab them and lead them in without wasting any time.

"Come on Jack! Shit!" Poppy said as she smacked her hands against the wall in frustration. The small outburst didn't seem to faze her as she got straight back to doing CPR on Jack. Calum suddenly appeared back in the doorway with two sets of paramedics who moved Poppy aside as they began to work. I watched as she skidded towards the wall, her back up against it as she brought her knees up to her chest and rested her head in her hands, watching everything the paramedics did to both people with every hope that she'd done something that helped save them.
