Chapter 63
Poppy's PoV
It had to be perfect. I didn't care how late I was going to be to the amusement park, I had to get this done first.
I shot around our hotel room, tidying everything up as I laid out the things I brought for Calum and I to have a romantic evening together after the day trip. Today was the first day that the band had off, four more shows running consecutively after this, so I knew I had to make sure it happened today. I had to prepare the room and put the decorations up, all before I went to the amusement park and had a great time with everyone. It was hard work.
The paps hadn't made my life any easier. My original plan was to do it when the guys went for a drink after dinner and just have it ready for when he came back up to the room, but seeing as I already had to get out of the car to move the paps, it only made more sense to me to run back into our room and decorate it before I left.
Midway through scattering some rose petals on the bed, my phone began to ring. It was Calum. I began to panic, knowing that he'd be calling because he was worried so if i didn't answer he'd think the worst - however I knew that any moment now, the hotel staff were coming with a menu of things for me to order in advance, making sure everything was planned perfectly beforehand. I quickly swiped to answer the phone and Calum's voice rang out with worry, quizzing me on where I was. I felt guilty lying to him but that's what I had to do to ensure this was a surprise. I told him I was on my way despite still being in the hotel. I hadn't even called the cab yet. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door and I scrunched my face in disappointment. There was no doubt he heard that.
"I'm sorry cal I've got to go." I said as I hung up, opening the door quickly to the staff member who held out a couple of menus.
"Sorry to interrupt ma'am, we have the room service menu and the drinks menu. If you want to have any of these things then please just call down on #0 on the phone and order it in." I smiled and nodded as I grabbed the menus. "And your balloons just arrived." He gave me a bag that covered a load of helium balloons.
I thanked them whilst reading through the menu, shutting the door as I quickly browsed the food and drinks. Given my very short timeframe, I wasted no time in calling down, ordering the large snacks box and some chocolate covered strawberries, along with some beer and a mocktail. I added the finishing touches to the room; the balloons, some candles which I would light when we got back and some chocolates on the bedside table for him. It looked perfect, like a romantic getaway within the hotel room of our tour. I smiled to myself as I took the picture and sent it in the group chat to the girls.
Who run the world?
Pops: what do you think??
Crystal: OMG HES GONNA DIE
Bex: AMAZING BB x
Sierra: way to make us look bad 🤷♀️
Sierra: I'm joking it looks perfect he's not gonna know what hit him
Bex: he's looking sad now though I'd hurry, get your ass back here
Crystal: yeah I think he's upset, he hasn't done anything yet.
Sierra: we kinda left him to go on rides though
Bex: we offered but he said no
My stomach dropped as I realised this would all be because of me. Thinking quickly, I jumped up and threw open the wardrobe, grabbing a different dress which I quickly threw on along with a pair of sandals. I quickly amended my hair and makeup and shot out of the room, grabbing a taxi from in front of the hotel. Within fifteen minutes I'd made it to the entrance, where I got my ticket and headed inside. I pulled my phone out and text Calum to ask where he was. No sooner had I done that, he came into view as he rushed over to me, pulling me into a rib crushing hug.
"I'm so glad you're okay." He said as he put me down, quickly taking in my new outfit. He took me in slowly, his eyes dragging over every curve of my body.
"I'm sorry, after the paps I felt sick so I headed back to the room. It didn't end well." I gestured to the new outfit.
"Why didn't you say that on the phone?" Calum quizzed, a hint of annoyance in his tone. I swallowed hard as i tried to continue the lie. I was honestly the worst liar I'd ever known. I just couldn't be deceptive, it wasn't in me to lie to people. It always made me feel bad.
"I didn't want you to worry." I shrugged, wrapping my arms around his waist. "I'm sorry." I batted my eyelashes at him as I gazed up at his tall frame. He seemed to relax instantly, putting his arms around me too.
"You don't need to apologise." He kissed the top of my head. "Now come on, the gangs been waiting for you." I let out a laugh as he dragged me behind him, speed walking into a small cafe area at the side. As I looked around, I noticed just how many people were looking at us, watching our every move, cameras and phones at the ready. Was Calum completely oblivious to this? How many people may have been noting his sad demeanour from before I got here? How many articles would that make? Dave stood at the door to the cafe, allowing the two of us in before he shut the door and stood outside, watching for potential threats. I waved to him as we passed him, before greeting all the guys and girls one after the other and sitting down for coffee and cake.
"So, what's been the best ride so far?" We were engrossed in our conversations, a few of us talking to different people, occasionally drifting in and out of other subjects as we chatted like we'd never done before. This seemed like the first time we actually had time to catch up properly, to have fun and laugh and be ourselves despite the watching eyes of the thousands outside. For once, I felt like I had a family. I took a moment to step out of the conversation and just take everyone in, their laughs, smiles, the way the corners of their eyes creased, some threw their heads back to laugh. It was honestly so nice to see.
BANG!
A loud noise, which sounded like a gunshot, suddenly sounded and caused our whole table to jump, the girls letting out feared shrieks as we looked around to see what had happened. There was suddenly fear in everyone's eyes, the happiness gone. Dave flung the door open and ran in.
"A car backfired. It's fine." He calmed us all, who collectively sighed with relief. We all looked at each other in shock, knowing the memories of Naomi's hostage scheme had suddenly come to mind. But as I laid eyes on Crystal, something didn't look right.
"Crystal?"
"I don't feel too..." and she suddenly collapsed.
