Chapter 71
Poppy's PoV
It took a while to register what had happened. The lorry had hit us and caused the few of us that had moved to fly into the roof of the car, crashing back down and we were all whipped around by the force of the lorry dragging the van around. Then it suddenly stopped.
I think I blacked out for a moment, who knows how long, and finally seemed to stir as if I was waking up from a bad nights sleep - groggy and lethargic.
I groaned as I moved, realising the roughness of the area I was in. I definitely wasn't in bed. As my eyes adjusted, all i saw was mess; glass, wires, clothes, metal that had been twisted and contorted. I sat up quickly, fear filling me as I remembered what I'd seen. I'd been looking out of the window when the lorry had hit. I moved everyone away from the left side of the van which now looked nonexistent, and then it went black.
"Poppy? Calum? Ashton?" I could hear people calling for us from far away, as if they were outside of the van. Looking out of one of the broken windows I saw Michael, Sierra and Dave stumbling around the wreckage, searching for the people who were not okay. I began to look around the van for anyone else left inside and that's when I saw him. Calum. Oh God. My heart dropped as I rushed over to him, realising pain radiating from many places in my body as I dragged myself over, reaching his unconscious body in a second. He was still strapped into the chair, a large gash on his head and his cheek bleeding heavily.
"Cal?" My voice was barely a whisper as I checked for his chest rising. But it wasn't. He wasn't breathing. I felt for a pulse and realised it was weak, knowing there was barely any time left to help him. Choking back a sob, I tried to focus on my nursing and think back to my training. This was not going to be another Amelia moment. I was not going to fail again. I began to do CPR, making sure to do the breaths as I pumped his chest, tears falling silently as I worked on my fiancé, the love of my life, the father of my child. "Oh god." I breathed out as my arms began to tire, blood seeming to trickle down my arm from somewhere I wasn't even sure about. It was fine though. I could do this. "Please please please." I whispered to him, hoping he could somehow hear me as I worked. This was getting dangerous. How long had he been unconscious? Was his brain getting enough oxygen? Was he going to make it?
"Calum?" "Poppy?" "Bex? Luke?"
I could hear people calling but I couldn't answer. I couldn't focus on anything else. I needed to save Calum.
"Baby please. Come on." I spoke to him as I gave more breaths. "You're stronger than this." With one final pump of my hands he coughed, spluttering up blood that flew from his mouth and over his clothes. I breathed out heavily for the first time since I'd started working on him, my sobs finally getting the voice they needed. I grabbed Calum and held him close, his breathing still raspy as he weakly rested his head on my chest. The noise of my wails seems to attract some people and before I knew what was happening, Dave had appeared by one of the broken windows of the van, taking in the sight before him.
"Poppy?" He asked, his voice shaky as he saw Calum in my arms as I cried.
"Internal... bleeding." I spoke through my cries. "He needs... a doctor." Dave ran off within a second and I was quick to realise that suddenly blue lights were lighting up the van. Emergency services were finally here. One was beside me with Dave as soon as I'd realised what had happened.
"She mentioned internal bleeding." Dave said as the paramedic and a firefighter looked over the wreckage, working out the best way in. They began to cut through the metal, sparks flying as they took a chunk out of the side, big enough for us to get out. I kept Calum protected, putting my body in the way to stop the sparks hitting him as he lay there, barely okay.
"I love you. So much." I whispered to him as I gave him a kiss, moving aside for the paramedics and firefighters to help get him out safely. As I finally rose to my feet for the first time since the accident, I took a long look round at the mess that had been caused as the lights from the emergency vehicles lit us all up. I saw my friends laying on the ground, different injuries being worked on as others tried to rope off the road and divert traffic. Onlookers recorded the mess, probably getting a direct link to the news channels. Crystal was sat on the floor sobbing, Michael being tended to by a paramedic for a large gash on his arm. Sierra was hugging Bex as they sorted out a nasty looking wound on her leg, possibly with a break or fracture. Luke was with Ashton who were both being treated for scrapes and cuts littering their bodies. Calum was on a trolley being loaded into an ambulance. Dave walked over to me, a large plaster covering the top of his head, and he put his arm around me.
"Hey, Cal will be okay. Let's get you seen to." He began to walk me over to an ambulance, towards Luke and Ashton. They tried to offer me smiles but I couldn't retaliate. I'd just had to deal with my biggest fear head on and I prayed I did enough this time. I prayed constantly that Calum was going to be okay and make it out without any lasting damage. I took one final look around, desperate to avoid their eye contact and I saw something I thought was impossible. Someone. That looked like Naomi, but it couldn't be - could it? She was in hospital, police were meant to be watching her every second. Surely it wasn't possible. Maybe I hit my head harder than I'd thought. I turned to Dave quickly, my eyes widened in fear as I muttered.
"Naomi." Dave's eyes were quick to look over to where I'd seen her and for a moment I could have sworn he'd seen her too. He was about to leave me to confront her but my legs gave way, Dave catching me just before I hit the floor. Ashton and Luke ran over and helped me to the ambulance but it wasn't long before I could feel the dizziness taking over and I blacked out, not knowing if anything was going to be okay again.
