Chapter 72
Poppy's PoV
Once again I woke up in hospital to a load of wires and machines beeping. I opened my eyes slowly, trying to ignore the pounding headache I already had. My body ached as if I'd run one hundred miles - but I knew I hadn't. I sat up quickly, only for someone to jump up and usher me back to laying down.
"Woah there. You need to rest." It was Ashton. He offered me a sorry smile, the cuts and bruises littering his face. He was close to me for a second, his hand pushing my shoulder to make me lay back down, and I took in all the injuries he had on his arms too.
"Hey Ash. How are you?" He let out a soft laugh.
"Feeling lucky as hell." He looked away for a second before our eyes met again. "Some people had it a lot worse than me. I can't complain." His hand rubbed my arm supportively. "You?" I finally took a moment to pause and take in how I truly felt. My body ached like nothing I'd ever felt, my head was pounding, I had various drips up keeping me pain free and hydrated. It wasn't too good. But equally it wasn't that bad. The way Calum had looked when I'd worked on him, watching the blood spill from his lips, that would stay with me forever. It was terrifying.
"I'm okay. In pain but surviving. How is Calum?" The silence that followed my question made my stomach tighten in anxiety. "Ash?" He averted his gaze before looking back to me with a sigh escaping his mouth before he could realise. Clearly whatever he was going to say was painful for him and upset him massively.
"You were right. He had internal bleeding and crush injuries. They fixed it all with keyhole surgery but he hadn't come round from the anaesthetic last time I'd checked. They said to give it another half hour." He checked the time once more. "Ten more minutes then." A nurse walked in with a smile as she greeted the two of us. She went through my chart, checking the remaining fluids and drips were on the right setting, observing the beeping machines for my heart rate and blood pressure. She let out another happy smile. I frowned slightly at her, why was she so happy when I'd just been through so much? She was irritating me.
"You're looking really good Poppy!" She said confidently as she jotted it all down. "Your observations have regulated and the wounds are healing nicely." I finally looked down at my body, checking every part of me for the taped gauze plasters they'd covered different areas of my body with. It was unbelievable just how many there were. What the hell happened? I must have blacked out when the worst of the crash happened. "It was pretty rough though, some of those injuries will require check ups and medication." She said as she took in my confusion. She finished writing and put the notes back, giving me and Ashton a smile. "I'll leave you two to talk. Young love is beautiful." She said as she opened the door and left, closing it behind us as she looked at us in awe.
"Did she just-?" Ashton began but stopped as soon as he saw me nodding. He huffed. "It's a shame that you can't be friends with the opposite sex without the assumption that you're dating. It's infuriating. I hate peoples assumptions on anything to do with relationships, sexuality..." I nodded in agreement. I took a moment to relax into the bed again and try to get comfortable, looking around the room and realising no one else was here or outside. Where are the others?
"How are the others? Is everyone okay?" I suddenly asked, voicing my thoughts. Ashton smiled for a moment before it fell. He rubbed the back of his neck nervously. I felt my chest tighten as I awaited the news.
"Luke is okay, he and Sierra headed back to the hotel to wait for management and the legal team. Dave needed treatment for road burn but he was okay, other than the scratch on his head. Crystal and baby are thankfully fine, I think Michael protected her and saved her from any serious damage. He had a few ligament injuries and some cuts but he'll be okay. Bex luckily just had a gash on her leg but she did fracture her foot, they said there isn't much we can do though. You know about yourself and Calum. You two seemed to take the brunt of the injuries because the lorry hit the back more. It was like they were aiming for you." Ashton said matter of factly giving his shoulders a light shrug.
"When can I see them?" I asked, wanting to go back to normal with the group as soon as possible. Ashton let out a laugh.
"When you're better! You have to look after yourself and the little sprout. I've never seen Calum so excited about something in his life. You've got to be strong enough for you both." His wise words rang in my head and after some thoughts, I nodded in agreement. He was right. I needed to get better and stronger. When Calum woke up, when I could see him again looking like his normal self rather than the injured patient I was dealing with, it would make me feel so much better. "I'll let you get some rest though, just text me if you need anything." He kissed the top of my head and gave me a nod as he headed out. It wasn't long before my nurse was back and smiling as much as usual. Was this what I was like? This was also frustrating.
"Excuse me. Would you be able to tell me if my fiancé is okay?" I asked her as she washed her hands, she glanced over to me slyly.
"Wasn't he the one in the room?" She quizzed. I shook my head defiantly.
"No, he's just our friend." I continued.
"Mmh hmm." She said as if she didn't believe me. I rolled my eyes.
"Calum Hood. He was in surgery. Is he okay?" My patience had worn thin. My tone was no longer nice. The nurse nodded.
"I believe so but let me check. The midwife will be here in a moment to listen to the baby and check everything is okay." I shook my head to her surprise.
"No. I'm not having that done without Cal here." The nurse left without another word, shaking her head, and moments later, the midwife arrived. She got everything set up and took some bloods before discussing with me what the plan was and what she was going to try to listen for. I watched the door impatiently, waiting for the nurse to tell me if Calum was okay. To my utter disbelief, she opened the door and wheeled a wheelchair in backwards, twisting it round for me to finally see Calum for the first time since I had to give him cpr. He offered me a tired smile.
"Hey beautiful." He said in a whisper, worry on his face as he took in my injuries. I smiled sweetly back, calming him down a little.
"Hey Cal." I beamed, grabbing his hand in mine. I was so thankful that he was okay. He didn't look his best but it'd take time. I was just glad he was okay.
"Right, if you're happy I'm going to try to find the baby. Please don't be worried if I can't find it, the baby is still so small at this stage..." The Doppler scanner was covered with gel and placed on my stomach, the sound of my insides crackled the otherwise silent room until suddenly...
boom boom boom
There was a heartbeat. My heart swelled as she made the sound louder, sounding like hundreds of horses were galloping through the room at high speeds. Calum and I looked at each other, barely blinking as we took each other in, our hands holding each other's tightly as we beamed, tears pricking my eyes. The sound engulfed us and it was as if we weren't in the hospital anymore. We were somewhere safe, just the three of us. There was one good thing to look forward to now, for us to focus on. This baby.
