Chapter 8
Poppy's PoV
Michael snatched my phone from my hand and put it to his ear angrily.
"Crystal? What is she talking about?" My throat closed up in anxiety knowing that this was possibly one of the most awkward moments I'd ever encountered - other than the time a pregnant lady came to my ward and both her partners arrived to see her at the same time. That was an awful day. I could hear crystal stammering as she tried to answer michael, despite her emotions being everywhere. "A-are you pregnant?" She finally answered him. A loud and strong yes that even I could hear. Michael's face dropped. His eyes searched the room for words, for anything he could say right now at this moment. He didn't have anything so he slowly handed the phone back to me, a dumbfounded look on his face.
"Umm, hi crystal." I said so she knew it was me again.
"He's freaking out isn't he?" She asked as I watched him, stood like a statue with surprise written all over his face.
"I-I think so, yeah." I said honestly.
"Shit. I knew this would happen. That's why I didn't want to tell him." She said, the last sentence hinting at her annoyance that he'd overheard the conversation.
"I'd come half way down the arena to have this phone call." I justified just to make sure. "But yeah, I think he'll need some time to adjust." I said honestly.
"I know. It's fine. I'll have to deal with the aftermath of this when I'm out of hospital. They just want to monitor me today and probably let me out tomorrow morning." She said confidently. "Tell him he can come and visit if he wants. We'll need to talk now anyway." I couldn't help but feel guilty, knowing he'd overheard me saying baby. It was an accident though, and I prayed she saw it like that.
"Of course and sorry again. I'll make sure to tell him. I'm glad everything is okay though. Rest up and look after yourself." I quickly hung up the phone and realised I'd now have to deal with Michael, who was half angry and half shocked as he glared at me. "Michael..." I began but he cut me off.
"You knew?" He said harshly. I gulped down the nervousness as I nodded, knowing it wasn't what he wanted to hear.
"I worked it out. The nurse in me is never off duty." I said, trying to add a humour to the conversation.
"And no one thought to tell me?" He snapped, looking around in surprise. "It was better I overhear it in a phone call?"
"Not at all. You weren't meant to hear it then. She was just waiting for the best time to tell you face to face." I tried to stick up for Crystal despite knowing just how upsetting this must have been for him. He had now heard this news second hand from a friend rather than from his own girlfriend. "She was going to tell you earlier when we went to see the magician but she wanted to be sure everything was okay first-" once again, Michael's angry voice cut me off.
"And that worked out well, didn't it?!" From the corridor I heard a myriad of footsteps and before I knew it, The rest of the band were now around Michael, watching this shitshow continue.
"Michael? What's going on?" Luke asked carefully, his eyes darting between the two of us.
"Why don't you ask her? She seems to know everything." Michael snapped, his eyes narrowing at me in anger and hurt.
"I was just doing what Crystal asked! I was trying to be a good friend!" I tried to stick up for myself but he was having none of it.
"What about being a friend to me?" He retaliated, knowing I didn't have a leg to stand on with this. I sighed defeatedly.
"I am your friend too Michael. I had that argument with her earlier about this exact thing. I told her to tell you." His eyes widened as he realised that's what we'd been whispering about before Crystal snapped and ran away from me. His jaw fell open.
"Told him what? What's going on?" Calum asked me and as painful as it was, I didn't answer him.
"I can't say. Sorry." I said, my gaze dropping to my feet as Calum looked at me, surprised by my secrecy.
"Michael?" Ashton added, he also shook his head.
"Not right now guys." He said sadly as he took one last look at me and turned on his heels, walking away from us all. I sighed heavily, finally relaxing into myself after having my guard up as I'd argued with him.
"I don't mean to be rude, Poppy, but you seem to be pissing everyone off recently. You might need to watch what you say. I'm not having any band problems because of you." Luke said as he turned and walked off to follow Michael, quickly followed by Ashton who had stayed silent. Calum stood away from me, his arms crossed over his body as he leant against the wall.
"It's not like you, Pops, getting involved in other people's relationships and angering everyone.." he said softly, his tone saddened.
"Calum, it's not-" I began but he held a hand up to silence me.
"It's fine. I get it. You can't talk about it." He finished for me before leaving me in the corridor by myself. I held back the sob that so desperately wanted to escape as I pulled my phone out and dialled the only person that might understand.
"Dave speaking." He answered almost instantly and very professionally. Dave had been having his own holiday whilst we were touring but was due back with us when we flew to Italy. "Everything okay Poppy?" I let out a sigh that told him everything he needed to know. "What's happened?"
"It's all a mess Dave. I just wanted to warn you before you come back to us in a few days time." I got to explaining everything to him; Crystal's pregnancy, the argument between her and me, my argument with Michael and how everyone was suddenly turning against me. It felt good to finally release all the angst but it wasn't all good as Dave let me know his feelings too, knowing that I wasn't necessarily always in the right. We had a lot that needed sorting before we got to Italy. Let's hope it worked out.
