CHAPTER EIGHT: mr. brightside

{ " it started out with a kiss, how did it end up like this? it was only a kiss, it was only a kiss " — mr. brightside, the killers, 2003 }

The buzzing of Evie's phone against her nightstand brought her out of a very peaceful sleep.

She wasn't happy about it.

She grumbled and groaned as she woke up, then saw the time on her clock. "5 freaking AM? This better be damn important." She hissed to herself.

Her eyes widened as she saw the alerts on her phone.

Andrews
Are you awake?

Andrews
You need to wake up

Andrews
Honeybee

Andrews
EVIE!

3 Missed Calls
Andrews

Evie frowned and dialed the boy's number back. "Andrews? What's going on? This better not be a booty call." She laughed.

"Honeybee..." The boy's haunted voice called out. "Something terrible has happened."

Evie's blood grew cold. "The Black Hood?" She asked.

Archie cleared his throat. "Yeah."

"Oh no ... who?"

"Midge and Moose. Midge ... she's okay, but ... Moose is in the hospital." The redheaded boy muttered.

"Well, at least he's alive." Evie sighed. She got out of bed and began to dress. "Hey, listen, Red. Sweet Pea and I will be right over. Are you at the hospital?" She asked.

"Yeah. I'll see you soon. Be safe." With that, the redhead hung up.

Evie finished dressing and ran into her brother's room, where he was sprawled out among the sheets, drooling and softly snoring.

"Sweet Pea!" She yelled, flicking the lights on. "Get your ass up!"

Evie's brother groaned, and the girl ducked as he swung a pillow at her. "What the Hell, Honeybee?" He hissed. "It's still dark outside!"

"There was another shooting. Get dressed, we're going to the hospital." She demanded.

"The Black Hood?" Sweet Pea asked as he sat up. Evie nodded. "Who?" He asked, sitting up and pulling a shirt on.

"Moose and Midge." She replied.

Sweet Pea scoffed and sat back down. "What do I care?"

"Sweet Pea." His sister grumbled. "Get your ass up!" She repeated once again. She grabbed the boy's foot, then pulled him off the bed. He landed on the carpet with a thud, and she stood, smirking, over him.

Sweet Pea glared back in her direction as he slowly sat up, rubbing his back. "If you weren't my sister, I'd call you a bitch."

Evie scoffed and rolled her eyes. "I am a bitch, bro. Now come on."

Evie left her brother's room to let him get ready, while she headed to the kitchen to make them both a PB&J to eat on the way.

Sweet Pea came out, snugly pulling a black beanie over his messy bedhead. His face was a mix between a glare and a grimace. He snagged one of the sandwiches from his sister, taking a large bite. "You can drive." He muttered.

Evie rolled her eyes and grabbed the keys to her bike, finishing up the last bite of her sandwich. She lead Sweet Pea out to the motorcycle, and as soon as they were both secured on the bike, she drove off.

Sweet Pea soon noticed his misfortune in having Evie drive: he was on the back of his sister's motorcycle.

They quickly arrived at the hospital, and Evie rushed inside, leaving Sweet Pea to make his way in at his own pace. The female twin searched around for Archie's familiar red hair, finally finding it as the boy was leaning against the wall, running a head through his hands.

"Hey, Red. How are they doing?" Evie asked, sliding over towards him. Eyes locked on her, or specifically, the serpent on her back. Of course, even in a time of distress like this, people would judge her for being a Serpent. They probably thought she had something to do with the Black Hood.

"Well, Midge is fine. Moose protected her. Moose ... he's not doing too well, if I'm being honest." Archie said, his voice lowered.

Evie gave him a sympathetic look. She'd never really spoken to either Moose or Midge, but she knew they were Archie's friends. If Evie was in his place, if it was one of her friends in Moose's place ... well, she hoped Archie would be here for her.

Even if they weren't together.

Which they weren't together.

They were just friends, she supposed.

The click click of expensive high heels marching down the hallway quickly brought Evie to attention. Her head snapped up and she locked eyes on Veronica Lodge, who for once in her life appeared concerned for someone other than herself.

"Archie?" Veronica addressed her ex-boyfriend, taking the ginger by surprise. "How are Moose and Midge?" She asked, standing in front of Archie and Evie.

"Midge is fine." Archie spoke, his voice clipped. "Moose is ..." He trailed off, not finishing the sentence. They didn't really know just how Moose was doing.

Evie looked up as a group of more Riverdale students entered the hospital, lead by none other than Reggie Mantle and Cheryl Blossom. Evie hadn't really dealt with Cheryl much since she'd come back to Riverdale, but she'd heard stories about her. Midge was one of her River Vixens, so it was no wonder that the Blossom girl had arrived so hastily.

Reggie walked over to Evie and Archie, nodding at them as he approached. Veronica still stood on the other side of Archie, and Evie wished she would go find comfort in someone else. Not that she cared if Veronica talked with Archie.

She just didn't like being in close proximity with Her Lodgessness.

"Morgan." Reggie nodded at Evie.

"Mantle." Evie gave the boy a forced, tight-lipped smile.

"How's Moose doing?" Reggie asked. Evie knew that Reggie and Archie were both pretty close to Moose, due to the football team. She figured she should probably give the two friends some privacy.

She definitely felt like a fish out of water in the hospital, or, she supposed, a Serpent out of the Whyte Worm. She was the only one there, and she had no idea where her brother had slipped off to. She walked off, searching for him. Evie didn't even know Moose. What was she doing there? Had she really dragged her brother out of bed so she could comfort Andrews?

"Hey, uh, have you seen my brother?" Evie asked as she approached Jughead and Betty, who had just arrived.

"Sweet Pea? No. He's here?" Jughead asked, clearly shocked.

"I made him come." Evie admitted.

"No offense, Honeybee, but why are you here?" Betty asked as politely as she could.

"Yeah, I don't know. Andrews, um, called me and I ... well, I came." Evie felt her cheeks start to burn, and she wanted to punch herself. Genevieve Morgan didn't get embarrassed, but here she was, blushing over some football jock. "I'm going to head out." She felt like she shouldn't be there. The Northsiders hated the Serpents. Why would they want her there?

She quickly ducked outside, and her eyes scanned the parking lot for her bike. "Dammit." She muttered, noticing that, like her brother, her motorcycle was MIA.

In a burst of immaturity, Evie kicked the wall before heading back inside. The only one she wanted to remotely talk to was Archie, but he was nowhere to be seen.

"Did you here?" Someone addressed Evie, taking her by surprise. She turned around to see Reggie standing next to her, a big grin on his face. "He's going to be fine. He's okay!" Reggie grinned. Evie had to admit, it was nice to see the boy smile at something that made him genuinely happy. Evie also had to admit, she felt a bit of relief that Moose was going to be fine. She wasn't too sure.

"That's great news, Mantle." Evie smiled at him. "Have you seen Archie?" She asked.

"Your new little plaything? Last I saw he was where you left him, with Veronica." Reggie said. "What's going on between you two, anyways?" He questioned.

Evie gave him a glare. "Nothing that's of your concern." She hissed before hurrying off to save Archie from the clutches of Veronica Lodge once again.

After a quick scan of the entire waiting room, Evie noticed that both Archie and his ex-villain were both absent, and her stomach dropped.

What was this feeling? Evie felt jealous; she felt insecure. These weren't feelings she commonly experienced, and she loathed it. She hated the fact that this red haired boy had popped into her life and given her emotions.

She didn't know what was going on. It could be a coincidence that they were both gone, but Evie couldn't bring herself to believe that. It wasn't like Evie and Archie were anything exclusive. They just messed around and had fun. Great fun.

But still, that didn't mean Evie's heart wasn't racing, or that she didn't want to punch Veronica Lodge 84 times in her perfect little smug face.

She was jealous. J-E-A-L-O-U-S. And she hated it.

She took a deep breath and composed herself, straightening her leather jacket. With an unreadable expression on her face, she walked back over to Reggie. "Hey, Mantle. Would you mind giving me a ride home?"

Sorry for making Ronnie such a bitch in this book, but it spices up the plot a bit, doesn't it? Let me know what you think so far!
