Chapter 38: The River 3-12-17

Aragorn: 12 years old

Aragorn had landed in the water on his back and he was in complete shock as the water hit his body. He had never swum before and was unsure of how to. He flailed his arms around in all directions trying to keep his face about the water. His feet kicked hard like motors as they couldn't reach the bottom of the river.

Swimming became even more difficult because he was wearing heavy boots and clothes. It was a lot more difficult with all the weight.

The two Orcs that had fallen off the cliff with him were tugging on Aragorn also making the swimming even harder. The Orcs could not swim due to how much armor they were wearing. Their armor must have weighed at least thirty pounds. The Orcs started drowning and one grabbed Aragorn's ankle.

He tried kicking the grip off his leg, but didn't have the strength to keep fighting the heavy water around him. The last thing Aragorn hard before being consumed by the water was a splash next to him. He had taken a quick breath before sinking under the river water.

Aragorn held his breath for as long as he could. He continued trying to kick the Orcs grip off, but he knew the Orcs wasn't going to let go until it drown.

After about a minute of being underwater, Aragorn's lungs couldn't take the water any longer. He thrashed around viciously with whatever strength he had left, but just kept getting closer to the bottom of the river.

Before he lost complete consciousness, from above he felt something grab his hand. Whatever had him pulled him up with inhuman strength that ripped the Orcs hand off Aragorn's ankle. Aragorn was pulled out so fast that his mouth and nose were forced to stop holding in.

Water gushed into his mouth and nose making his throat and nose sting like there was a fire in them. But then, his head broke above the surface of the water and he could breath. He took in long gulps of air as he coughed out water.

"I got you, I got you. Don't worry. Stay still," although Aragorn could not see beyond his thrashing movements that disturbed the water, he knew it was Elrohir.

He stopped struggling and focused on breathing as Elrohir swam to the edge of the river. Once they made it to solid ground, Elrohir dragged Aragorn on shore and sat next to him.

"You alright?" Elrohir asked as he looked up from Aragorn and scanned the trees.

"Yah," he panted as he clutched his chest that was breathing in and out fast.

"Do you think you can get back to Rivendell?" Elrohir asked.

"With you, right?" Aragorn asked.

"No, I need to stay back and fight. Two against those Orcs isn't good. I need to help them,"

"Rivendell is that way, right?" Aragorn pointed north.

"Yes, you need to stay unseen and once you get to Rivendell, tell our father what has happened,"

"He will be upset," Aragorn said looked down to himself.

Elrohir nodded. Aragorn stood up with the help of Elrohir. They both separated and went their own ways. Aragorn to Rivendell and Elrohir to go help his twin and friend fight off the Orcs.

Aragorn ran and ran. It was harder now that he was wet, but it was quite windy outside which felt nice as it dried his clothes off quicker. He jumped over branches and stayed clear of mud and the trees. Every now and then he would stop and listen, but he never heard anything.

Once he reached Rivendell, he saw Elrond immediately. He was in front of his building reading a book. Aragorn ran towards him and once he got about half way to him, Elrond sensed him and looked up. He wasn't expecting to see Aragorn this early in the day and alone.

"What happened to you?" Elrond asked as he steadied Aragorn as he came to a stop in front of him breathing hard, "Where are the others?"

"In the forest... Orcs are everywhere... They told me to come and get you," Aragorn said breathlessly.

"What in Middle Earth has brought them this close to our borders?" Elrond said and looked to the forest, "Stay here. Go to your room and stay inside,"

"But, I can help! I can fight too," Aragorn argued.

"Estel, not this time," Elrond commanded and took his sword at the ready.

Aragorn nodded and stepped back. Elrond patted him on the shoulder and then started calling out orders to his Elf warriors. All Elves in the area looked to their Lord and followed him into the forest.

Aragorn watched them all leave and obeyed what Elrond had told him to do. He went to his room and waited... and waited... and waited.
