Chapter 42: Trials 2-12-17
Aragorn: 16 years old
"This is the year of the Trials!" Elrond shouted from the end of the table, "This year is the count of the hundredth year,"
The whole Elven kingdom went up in applause and screams of joy and happiness.
"Trials?" Aragorn whispered to Arwen.
"You'll see," she responded.
"This year we will be holding the Trials on the week of March first. Elves from the ages of 1000-3000 can participate in the Trials,"
"What's this about Elrohir?" Aragorn turned to his brother who sat next to him at the feasting table.
Elrohir wasn't sure how to reply, but he said,
"It's just a game for the Elves. Doesn't apply to humans,"
Aragorn was about to defend himself, but Elrond continued announcing to the Elves,
"There will be four Trials with two pairs of Elves competing against each other in each round. I will be posting the rules on my door this night along with spare paper for anyone who wants to join in the Trials. It is not mandatory, but it is fun and gets us trained up good,"
All the Elves cheered again and applauded. Then Elrond sat down and glanced at Aragorn who was confused by the situation.
Aragorn was left to be confused and wondered what exactly where the Trials and why his brothers looked scared at the moment.
-----
After dinner, Aragorn found Lagorion leaving and decided to ask him what was going on.
"Lag! Hey Lagorion!" Aragorn called out to him and ran to his side.
"Hey," Lagorion said sounding in a rush, "I have to go sign up for the Trials as soon as possible, but what do you need?"
"I was wondering if you could tell me what is going on," he asked.
"Alright, but let me go sign up first," Lagorion turned and Aragorn followed,
Elrond was already at his building putting pieces of paper with ink on his door. Lagorion was the first one to arrive at his door, but there were lots of other Elves crowding behind him. Aragorn caught a small glimpse of Elladan and Elrohir going into Elrond's building with him. They looked concerned.
Lagorion signed his name in the black ink that was left on a table by Elrond's door. Aragorn took a peek at the paper and saw that all the rules for the game was in Elvish. He had only learned a small amount of the writing of Elvish so far, so therefore he could not understand the rules too much. Then he followed Lagorion as they left. The line of Elves was increasing fast.
"Could you tell me what is going on now?" Aragorn asked, "What are these Trials?"
"Yah," Lagorion said, "Let's go to your room,"
Aragorn followed Lagorion to his room and once they were inside, Aragorn sat down on his bed and Lagorion paced back and forth in front of him.
"Alright, for the past thousands of years, Elves in Rivendell have been doing a game that has been labeled the Trials," Lagorion explained, "Every one hundred years, we Elves do the Trials. The rules are simple. There are four fighting matches and whoever is the winner at the end of all four, wins. During the Trials, it will be a match between two Elves and whoever wins gets to go to the next round. Whoever loses is done with the game,"
"How do the Elves fight? Like with a sword?" Aragorn asked.
"During the Trials, we have to use a wooden sword. The game is designed for having fun, not for any deaths,"
"How do you win a Trial?" Aragorn asked.
"You win the Trial by either disarming your opponent, or by surrendering by calling out 'Daro!'" (stop).
"I want to join!" Aragorn exclaimed, "It sounds fun!"
Lagorion shook his head and said sadly,
"Sorry, mellon, but only Elves can do it and they have to be 1000 to 3000 years of age,"
"But..."
"I cannot allow you to do the Trials, but if you ask Lord Elrond, maybe he will let you,"
"Thank you for your time!" Aragorn said and before Lagorion could respond, Aragorn was already flying out of his room.
He was going to go ask permission to get into the Trials from Elrond.
A/N: This whole section of the story has nothing to do with what the Elves acually do. I made this whole thing up to just add in more fun! Let me know if you like the idea! :D
